[GUIDE] Change your carrier name manually | Easy - Sony Xperia P, U, Sola, Go

Hi :victory:
After seeing this mod on the news portal I wanted to change the carrier name myself, but unfortunately that was only for Verizon phones. So I looked through /system and found preloaded_config.xml which contained information on all carriers and I managed to change the carrier name (with some help from this app) And here's an easy guide how you can do it yourself!
1. First you want to download preloaded_config.xml and spn-conf.xml.
2. Open the files with a program like Notepad++.
3. Search for your carrier inside preloaded_config.xml. I had to search for "Tele2 NO" (remember capital letters). You will find something like this:
<preloaded-data mnc="07" mcc="240" operator-name="S COMVIQ" service-provider="Tele2 NO" service-provider-id="262">
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
4. The value mnc="07" and mcc="240" makes the number 24007 (put the first value behind the second). These values will differ for every carrier.
5. In spn-conf.xml, replace "XXXXX" with your new number. (For me it's 24007)
6. In spn-conf.xml you must also change what your new carrier name will be. (Replace "skifyr123").
7. Save spn-conf.xml and move it to /system/etc/. Reboot for changes!
And that's it. If it doesn't change be sure you found the correct carrier for your country!
An easier way is to use the app "Carrier Name": http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901865 But it is reported that it doesn't work on all phones/ROMs. Working on Xperia S.

Nice!
Sent from my LT26i using xda app-developers app

it does not work on me. i did it b4 & now. nothing changed. show my original carrier name only.
im on 2.3.7

Thanks for your work!

Forget it, just saw you recommended it on the end.

Tried it trough using the app, worked, rebooted, still Vodafone instead of my own name...
Looked trough Root Explorer, found in system/etc file spn-conf.xml, my name was there, and value was 20404 (the right numbers)
Am i missing something? Should i change it in preloaded_config.xml and and save it?

Same here, although I noticed my carrier displays as 3uk for a few seconds before changing to 3.
No matter what I try it will not change.
Sent from my XperiaS via transwarp conduit.

works very good for me.. just be sure not to add symbols and caracters in the name such as :"
AND IF U USE ROOT EXPLORER BE SURE TO DELETE THE BACKUP FILE : spn-conf.xml.bak THE APPLICATION AND MOST OF SUCH APPLICATION CREATE BEFORE RESTART..
thanks

Perfectly working with VIVO Xperia S 4.0.4 MooDeD ICS 90.5

Your method and also the recommended apps in my Xperia Mini Pro doesn't work too=(

Does not work on my Razr xt910 226.3 ICS EU.retail

works on SGS2 4.1.2 stock rom
For what it's worth, this method works on my Samsung Galaxy S2, with stock JB.
I've added the following line to change my carrier's name to my custom text:
<spnOverride numeric="12345" spn_display_rule="SPN_RULE_SHOW_SPN" spn="mytext"/>
You'll need to replace the 12345 above with your carrier's MCC+MNC. Use the Network Info II app from the market to get that info.
Make sure to fix permissions and owner on the file after you copy it back to /system/etc.

Not working for Android 9.0 Pie Samsung

easy steps to upgrade any (1.6 or 2.1)ROOTED to 2.1 rogers (without flashing)

it's been mentioned here and there but when I was looking I would have appreciated if someone just put it all in one place. a reminder this is based on the work been done by arkedk in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824711
so all credit really goes to him I just wanted to make a special version for rogers users that walk them step by step because it's really easy if follow a good instruction
ok first you need to use root explorer having your device rooted you better know what that is or you shouldn't have rooted in the first place!
1) inside the root explorer go to system/default.prop
and change the following XXXX-XXXX in the following three lines from whatever number in there to this number: 1233-6929 (DON'T USE OTHER ROGERS CUSTOMIZED NUMBER BECAUSE THEY AREN'T WORKING THIS IS THE ONLY ONE THAT WORKED FOR ME!)
ro.product.name=X10_XXXX-XXXX
ro.build.fingerprint=SEMC/X10_XXXX-XXXX/X10i/es209ra:2.1-update1/2.0.A.0.497/8QFA:user/release-keys
ro.semc.version.cust=XXXX-XXXX
2)for pc companion
type run in the search then enter,a window will open
enter the following line in it:
%programdata%\Sony Ericsson\Update Engine\db\
and delete the folder inside(it's a folder with numbers as name)
for SEUS
type run in the search then enter, a window will open
enter the following line in it:
%programfiles%\Sony Ericsson\Update Service\db\
and delete the folder inside(it's a folder with numbers as name)
3)last step go to SEUS or pc companion update and they gonna show you how to get from there
QUESTIONS:
Q:is it only rogers customers can upgrade to this 2.1 from 1.6?
A:No it's like change region post it's x10a rogers 2.1 version simple!
Q:how to root?
A:search for z4root in the market it's one click root
Q:will I lose my data
A:yes use your backup and restore program + titanium backup pro to make sure you lose no data
Enjoy everyone!
For those people who already flashed to Nordic 2.1 or some other 2.1 version wish to flash back to Rogers 2.1
1. Make sure you have rooted your device.
2. Install RootExplorer from market.
3. Use RootExplorer and open the build.prop in Text Editor (build.prop file is located at /system)
4. Change the following XXXX-XXXX in the following two lines from whatever number to: 1233-6929
ro.product.name=X10a_1233-6929
ro.semc.version.cust=1233-6929
Save the file after you made the change.
5. Go to /etc/customization/settings and open "cust.prop" with Text Editor, and change the XXXX-XXXX in the following line to 1233-6929
ro.semc.version.cust=1233-6929
Save the file after you made the change.
Put the phone in the flash mode and update with SEUS should give you Rogers 2.1 frimware.
Regards
I have gobal generic ROM I used the instructions from Nordic rom but it didn't work. I'm getting you have latest software. Do I need to do something else

Thanks for the instructions. I've sucessfully converted from Global Generic X10i to Rogers X10a. However, I had to make some changes before I got it to work. The first time I did it, it didn't give me an option to Repair or Install - just Exit.
Besides changing "ro.product.name" and "ro.semc.version.cust", I also changed the number in "ro.build.fingerprint" (which is also in build.prop) to 1233-6929. I also went and deleted the old firmware from the SEUS db folder, as stated in the original post.
I might as well say what "branding" it includes:
- Rogers splash screen on bootup. Now it's shown after the SE logo animation. It's kind of long, actually. I wish I had saved the old one (which was just the SE logo).
- Rogers "My Account" app is included. This app is also downloadable from the Market.
- "PlayNow" app has been replaced with "urMusic" app. This also appears instead of "PlayNow" in Mediascape.
- "Creatouch" app is still included (which is the only app in PlayNow that can't be downloaded from the Market, I think).
- Rogers APN settings are included and enabled by default. No need to manually enter them.

[HOWTO] Backup your CSC

DISCLAIMER: Please bear in mind that my flashing didn't end up perfect and I'm still learning. That said, we're just gonna be copying some files so I think it's kinda harmles to the phone. It worked for me, but it doesn't mean it will necessarily work for you, I post this because I think it's important that we share our experiences so we can learn from each other. Also I cannot guarantee that it will restore everything. In short what I mean is you do this under your own risk. This procedure was tested only on the following models. If you have success in other models please post back so I can update the list
Tested:
- Galaxy 551 (GT-i5510L)
- Galaxy mini (GT-S5570L)
1. Type *#272* IMEI # on your phone. In the little white box that appears on top there's a 3 letter code, that's your CSC code. Now hit the back button. (DON'T click "Install")
2. Go to /system folder and look for the file "CSCFiles.txt". To make things easier copy it to your sdcard and then download it to a pc so you can watch it during the procedure.
That file lists all the files that the phone uses to install a new CSC when you enter the code *#272* IMEI # so basically what we have to do is go through the system folders looking for those files and back them up in the sdcard or to a pc (your choice). Also back up with Ti Backup (just in case, you should always do a backup)
3. Flash.
4. After flashing go to the /system/csc folder. Inside this folder we have subfolders named with the codes of all the CSC included in the CSC file. What we need to do is create a folder with our CSC name (my case it was CTI) and then put all the files we backed up earlier in it.
5. Take your backed up CSCFiles.txt and back it up again, we're gonna be modifying it (TIP: if you're using Root Explorer for this process it makes a backup for you named CSCFiles.txt.bak).
6. Now we are going to tell android where the files are now so it can install them. Open your CSCFiles.txt for editing (note: I edited with Root Explorer, I just opened the file with windows Notepad to copy some sections for this post and it opened all in one long line, so it's probably not a good idea to edit it on windows) mine looked something like this
Code:
/system/media/bootani.qmg
/system/media/video/shutdown/shutdown.qmg
/system/media/audio/notifications/Claro.mp3
/system/CSCFiles.txt
/system/csc/contents.db
/system/csc/customer.xml
/system/csc/isnew_csc.txt
/system/csc/others.xml
/system/csc/sales_code.dat
/system/csc/feature.xml
/system/SW_Configuration.xml
/system/wallpaper/drawable/wallpaper_claro.jpg
/system/wallpaper/drawable/wallpaper_claro_small.jpg
/system/wallpaper/default_wallpaper/default_wallpaper.jpg
/system/app/LauncherMyfiles.apk
/system/app/YahooSearch.apk
/system/app/Plugger.apk
/system/app/MBO2_SMS_I5510L_CSBP_AMX_302.apk
/system/app/LauncherMessage.apk
/system/app/LauncherCamera.apk
/system/app/LauncherStk.apk
/system/app/CTI_Link.apk
/system/app/AMXNotification.apk
/system/app/LauncherCalendar.apk
/system/app/ASCR_SMS_i5510L_ML_AMX_301.apk
/system/app/LauncherContact.apk
/system/app/TopappMessage.apk
/system/app/LauncherMusicplayer.apk
/system/app/LauncherSettings.apk
you can tell there are some customized animations (with the operator logo) and sounds, then some bloatware and apps (which I didn't chose to restore) and then there are these files
Code:
/system/CSCFiles.txt
/system/csc/contents.db
/system/csc/customer.xml
/system/csc/isnew_csc.txt
/system/csc/others.xml
/system/csc/sales_code.dat
/system/csc/feature.xml
/system/SW_Configuration.xml
I only copied these files to the /system/csc/CTI folder we previously created and now comes the "tricky" part. You have to copy the files maintaining the path that the file says. i.e. the CSCFiles.txt goes into /system/csc/CTI/system/CSCFiles.txt then sales_code.dat goes in folder /system/csc/CTI/system/csc/sales_code.dat and so on. Then we have to edit our CSCFiles.txt to reflect these new paths so it will look something like this
Code:
/system/csc/CTI/system/CSCFiles.txt
/system/csc/CTI/system/csc/contents.db
/system/csc/CTI/system/csc/customer.xml
/system/csc/CTI/system/csc/isnew_csc.txt
/system/csc/CTI/system/csc/others.xml
/system/csc/CTI/system/csc/sales_code.dat
/system/csc/CTI/system/csc/feature.xml
/system/csc/CTI/system/SW_Configuration.xml
7. Finally if we've done eveything right when we type *#272* IMEI # our CSC will be listed and we can chose it, select it.
WARNING: THE FOLLOWING STEP WILL ERASE ALL YOUR PHONE DATA AND PERFORM A HARD RESET
8. Click "Install". The phone will shutdown.
9. Turn it on, an image of the little green droid with a box appears for a while and then the phone shuts down again. Just wait a little longer and it will reboot itself and presto!! You have your phone flashed and with your CSC restored!! (and hopefuly everything works out fine). Note that this time the reboot can take longer since it copies all the files before starting the OS.
This is my first Howto so any questions, comments, help will be greately appreciated and encouraged. I will try to answer if I can. Also if you try this on a different phone please tell me so I can start making a list with supported/not supported devices.
Finally!!!
Worked like a charm. I was able to restore the original CSC on my device and proceed with carrier updates. Thanks so much!

So far, I have only tested it with Galaxy GT-I5510L and Galaxy GT-S5570L it "should" work in other models if they maintain the same csc file/folder structure. If anyone tries this and it works for another model please post back results and I'll update first post
Very helpful !! Must be a sticky

Veryy usefull, as many dumbs make faults in flashing.
But you could first explain to them what a CSC is

i think CSC mean country specific code
I have a little warning for this: the "contents.db" is actually an SQLite file, which contains the full path+name and the filesize of the CSC files. I think that this file should be edited when you change the path or the size of your CSCs. Screenshot attached
Thanks man! It really helps alot!

[Q] (Solved?) Change DEFAULT Homepage on Cooked Rom

Ok, got a bit of a problem here... I need to change the default homepage of the browser in a Rom I'm cooking... that means the homepage you get after a full factory reset, not that you set in the menu.... Please don't tell me how to set it in the browser menu....
A bit of background... I'm using a leaked Rom to build from. It was leaked from a Tracfone "LG-L95G" which is identical in every way to the LG-P999 aka T-Mobile G2X. Everything is working 100%. The only problem left from the "porting" is removing Tracfone as the default browser homepage.
This has turned out to be harder than I expected.
What I have done:
Browser.apk - the xml lists Google as the homepage. The word "tracfone" appears NOWHERE in the entire structure of the decompiled xml or values or even in the smali code.
SystemUI & framework-res - I've seen suggestions the homepage hides here. Can't find anything suggesting a setting to "tracfone"
flexdb - I really thought I had it kicked here. /system/etc/flex.db listed m.tracfone.com as the homepage for T-Mobile US. I changed all occurrences here to about:blank. I have also tried simply copying the flex.db from a P999 itself. Ie, removed ALL references to tracfone service and made it identical to a P999 in every way.
Ran grep -R tracfone * on the entire ROM.
Dug through tons of files by hand looking for any clue.
Unfortunately, even with all of that, do a wipe, open the browser, and you GET M.TRACFONE.COM again!
The word "tracfone" does not appear in build.prop, it does not appear in any init scripts, not even in the kernel scripts! Yet it comes back like Christine...
Does anyone have a clue where I could look next? Or failing that, even some way from an init.d script that I can overwrite the setting myself?
EDIT
Okay, I hate giving myself clues like this, but maybe this will help others (if I'm on the right track)...
Instead of doing a grep on the ROM from my PC, pre-install, I decided to actually hit up the RUNNING copy... so from adb into a Bash prompt on the phone itself, I ran a grep -r tracfone * and got the following result:
Code:
data/data/com.android.browser/databases/browser.db:Web page not availablehttp://m.tracfone.com/
data/data/com.android.browser/shared_prefs/com.android.browser_preferences.xml:<string name="homepage">http://m.tracfone.com</string>

data/data/com.lge.providers.flex/databases/flex.db:=77BRW_SETTINGDB_HOME_URL_Ihttp://m.tracfone.comhttp://m.tracfone.como"
data/data/com.lge.providers.flex/databases/flex.db:=;;DATACOM_ACCOUNT_MMSC_0_Ihttp://mms.tracfone.comhttp://[email protected]
data/data/com.lge.providers.flex/databases/flex.db:;%%DATACOM_ACCOUNT_APN_0_Iwap.tracfonewap.tracfone:?
data/data/com.lge.providers.flex/databases/flex.db:M77BRW_SETTINGDB_CURRENT_HOME_URL_Ihttp://m.tracfone.comhttp://m.tracfone.comI
data/data/com.lge.providers.flex/databases/flex.db:=77BRW_SETTINGDB_HOME_URL_Ihttp://m.tracfone.comhttp://m.tracfone.como
data/data/com.lge.providers.flex/databases/flex.db:=;;DATACOM_ACCOUNT_MMSC_0_Ihttp://mms.tracfone.comhttp://mms.tracfone.com6%
data/data/com.lge.providers.flex/databases/flex.db:;%%DATACOM_ACCOUNT_APN_0_Iwap.tracfonewap.tracfone:$
Which is very odd.... considering that is NOT the content of the actual flex.db that was flashed to the phone. That leads to 1 question: Why isn't the phone respecting the flex.db? I've noticed other edits to the file (such as bookmarks) do not apply either. So it is being ignored at somepoint. FlexProvider.apk maybe? Or is something in the ROM still identifying the phone to T-Mobile as an MVNO device and they're pushing out an OTA flex update?
EDIT 2:
AHA! There's a flex.db *INSIDE* the FlexProvider.apk file! So it *IS* ignoring the one placed in /system/etc/flex/! Editing this should solve it - but I'm going to test test test to make sure.

firstly to say interesting question!!
but I think it it not possible to change programmatically default homepage
this is a system app so will be signed by your provider let us suppose you find homepage location in code (could by result of a script parsing) by modifying source of that apk package how to solve signature problem ?!
if in .db file ...this file is created after flashing as a result of script parsing
not framework-res.apk better browser-res.apk if you have one

man use a ... editor...I can show you for fifty bucks
I was just curious about this tricky change (from your post) so thinking about Google motto don't be bad finally I have found but should recognize that I am bad at this time
here is solution
Actually, you can use an sqlite editor to change the values in the flex.db file... the problem I was having in the OP is that on an LG phone (maybe others?) the flex.db file is ignored and the one inside FlexProvider is used instead, so you have to edit both. You can add new locales the same way. No need to use a hex editor, as that would be much more difficult.

That is the model number for the x10 on a carrier called Docomo. If you want to modify the build.prop you will need a root explorer app such as es file explorer or root explorer (I assume that your phone is rooted...). Go to /system/build.prop and copy it to your SD card (always back up something BEFORE you modify it). Then open the original in a text editor. Change the lines that start with
ro.semc.product.model and
ro.product.model from S0-01C to Xperia X10
Then restart your phone.

Well, I see nobody answer you yet.
You have to modify three files in /system/etc/ folder: callocation.db, dp.db, and raw_yellow_data.db. Actualy, you can delete the last one. I don't know what's happen if you delete callocation.db. In this one is a database with China areas phone codes, and in dp.db is China Operators. What you see in dialer, is a location from china based on the number stored.

It's a different thing, because I'm sure you don't have Baidu Cloud ROM. If you have a stock ROM, you have to look in /system/app for something like CallerLocation.apk and uninstall it with a root explorer app, and if your ROM is odexed, after uninstall go to same folder and delete CallerLocation.odex, then restart your phone. It is better to enter in recovery to wipe data and cache after that or even best solution is to remove the caller app from "your_rom" zip before install. In HTC stock ROMs caller location is achieved thru some apps which includes those words in name. If you want to transalte it to english, hmmm.. I don't know.
