Is it possible.... - HTC EVO 3D

To have a 3g data connection and a wifi connection working simultaneously yet independently of each other?
I want to purchase an air stash wireless media server so I can carry more of my music around with me.
The problem is when this thing is linked to my phone I won't have a 3g connection(because it connects as a wifi network)
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Why do you specifically need 3G when there's wifi around?

There is a way. If I get off work early enough I will see if I can get it changed. Sent from my PG86100 using xda app-developers app

Well the airstash has a wifi transmitter to connect to the phone to transfer and stream files, so if I'm not around wifi but want to use that I have to sacrifice a data connection because 3g turns off when connected to wifi
Edit:
Wow thanks, that is incredibly generous.
I don't want to take up a ton of your time so if it isn't too complex I could probably do it if pointed in the right direction.

Why not just use Google music? I think it holds like 20,000 songs, its free, and works on any data connection

I've used Google music, I dedicated it to standout tracks but it has reached its end a while back and my phone is already refined to the point I don't want to move anything off it. I've been using box and dropbox, but my box account if full now too and dropbox is reaching that point in the next few weeks, so I figure the airstash and a 256gb sdxc card should last me a bit longer.
I know there seems like no reason to carry so much music around but once it leaves my phone and goes on my desktop hard drive it'll never be listened to again, essentially a music graveyard, so I try my best to delay the inevitable.

I know there has to be a way, and I think I've seen it before..
The phone is fully capable of running both Wifi and 3G/4G network at the same time, because when you're on WiFi and you send/receive a MMS, then it does upload/download via data.
I'll look into it for you.

Sweet, I've been searching all over the place trying to find out how but can't seem to find anything

It would work, but it would sure take you a while to get that working properly..
I would think that you could somehow tweak a file to allow them both since, as I said before, you can be on WiFi and download an MMS, which can go over 4G.
There's gotta be a way to trick android that it's downloading an MMS but it's really connecting you to 4G.
However, I have no idea how to do that, I'm not a developer.

I feel you would need some way of telling each individual application what connection to use in order for this to work right.

I think your right.
But the downside to that is when you actually go to really use a WiFi network, the app will continue to run on Data.

Hmmm, well if a governor or a toggle were implemented, to determine what apps use what connection under what circumstances, I'm thinking it might be a good route to take

But, I'm not a developer, and I don't think you are either. So it would take some time to get this working.
Since you're considering a toggle now, maybe try posting in the general Android Q&A section also? They might be able to help you.
Sorry.

That is a good idea, I'm taking a bunch of programming classes this semester so I might make it a school project.
Thanks for the replies,

If you're in high school, those programming classes won't involve anything android related, trust me.

Sounds to easy to be true, but I'll post it anyhow...
Doesn't putting the phone in hotspot mode access Data and repeat it over Wifi? So isn't the answer to simply put the phone in hotspot mode? I know the phone can still access the data while in hotspot mode, so external devices should also be able to talk to the android device as well; over the wifi correct? Unless there is a build in firewall w/port blocking... but I would put my bets on file sharing ports being open.

Yep its possible very possible

Depending on your patience, the native hotpot app works fine by turning it on, allowing your wireless device to connect to it, then toggling the radio on / off a few times from the phone settings menu accessed thru the dialer (*#*#4636#*#*). Pins the "paid" data pipeline to your normal 3g stream.

There was a thread about this is the fascinate forums...
Basically, the only way to prevent verizon to figure out that you are teathering is by using a kernel that blocks it.

Even then, if they want to really look there's a way they van tell on their end through packet timing or signatures or something.

If they're doing packet inspection, you know how SLOW that would make their network, and how much resources that would take up? Wouldn't be worth it to them. They are most definitely not doing packet inspection. They could possibly suspect something if you have high data usage. But then again, I have high data usage all the time, cause of my job, I run a business, I'm constantly downloading things, sending and receiving text messages through GV and emails, plus I have Google Plus backup all my pics and videos to a private album online. I use able 10-15 GB a month.

I wasn't able to get that wireless tether app to work... or the barnacle thing. It says it's on and everything but I can't see a network being broadcasted, nothing shows up on my website that resembles a phone or open network.

Have you tried the radio toggle? This works for me with the native hotspot app. The packet info issue was something that a vzw tech on the fascinate forums said they COULD do to verify tethering if it was suspected. I was just trying to add that they do have ways to detect it based on what was shared by him. Whether it's practical for them isn't the issue, the point being that no tethering method is completely invisible.

[Q] Wi-fi emulator

Is there some sort of wi-fi emulator out there? Amazon app of the day won't let me download some of the apps, but 4G is twice as fast as my wi-fi connection at home.
Hello, and welcome to XDA
I would love to help answer your question, however your post is somewhat ambiguous.
If you could, please indicate in more detail what the particular problem is.
I am going to take a leap here and assume that your problem is that wireless tether sets up an ad-hoc network instead of a regular wifi network.
however if this is not the case, then please let me know. I will do the best I can to help you.
Hmm I was wondering the same thing. His problem isn't anything to do with teather. It's that Amazon will have free apps that say they require a WiFi connection on phone to download do to there size.
If your in an area where you can't connect to a WiFi network Amazon will not let you download. Even if your on 4g for some reason the server will only allow a WiFi connected phone to download which really sucks.
So he wants to be on his 4g connection but fool Amazon's server into thinking he is connected via WiFi

Yeah this is for the Amazon Market. Main problem is that Amazon only allows certain apps to be downloaded over wifi. It sucks and as of yet there is no workaround that I know of. I'm sure some form of proxying would work but that's just as much of a pain as doing any kind of workaround. Amazon just needs to remove this limitation as a whole. I mean really where's the benefit for them to have you use your wifi connection vs your mobile connection.

I just grabbed that using 4g, but I've had that wifi issue before.
EDIT: I guess I didn't get it with 4g. It looked like it had downloaded and said update but then I saw it was hung up and it started after I switched to wifi.
Quite silly at this point, they could just give you the large data download warning that I believe the Market gives you.
If they hear from enough people I would bet they would change it. They started a packing feedback after I returned a hdd 3 times and bought somewhere else due to poor packing. I'm sure they had many complaints.

Browse Internet while on call update?

OK a friend of mine on a Epic (old one) told me that he got a sprint communications update, or something along the lines of that. Now, he says he can talk on the phone and browse the Internet at the same time. Anybody else got this update?
He said that the guy from radio Shack said it isn't just his device, but other phones on sprint too.
Also, strange thing. He also says that he is picking up 4G signal where we live which is North Cape coral in Florida, and we never had 4G here. Maybe sprint is still rolling out wimax in a few cities.

It should be the same as with the previous data plan. Im sure the workarounds still work. Try this app, I've been using it without issues: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...S5nb29nbGVjb2RlLmFuZHJvaWQud2lmaS50ZXRoZXIiXQ..

Okay to answer all your questions.
1. It can access all sites.
2. Yes tmo apparently detect unpaid tethering via the pc useragent on http sites but since they pry into https as it is a secure protocol, they can't detect those but I just used all the various protocols without any issues.
3. Yes it works via the wifi tether app from the play store, it does work via the default tether app on some devices but the newer devices they set it to check your data plan for hotspot, but the wifi tether app gets around that and works fine and no I didn't modify anything, I'm on the stock apn, etc.
Yes I do have the true unlimited plan as well.

Actually everyone is doing crazy downloading, the thing about the wifi tether third party app is that it shows your device as being the user of the data and not it being tethered the way the on board hot spot option would, that's why I opt for the third party app than just a fix, that way they can't block your tethering since it's your device showing up on the network and not a pc, imo.
