Does anyone know if activating an older dumb phone in place of my FUBAR'd DX2 will cause my plan to change? I've got an old Voyager I could activate since I can't seem to get my DX2 to work properly. I will eventually get another Android device to replace but not for some time since I'm still without work. I at least need a working phone for potential job calls.
I'm pretty sure as long as you don't actually change anything about your plan, you should be straight. Changing your phone won't matter.
If tpu wont be using a smart phone you wont need the extra data package. If you don't have to keep it you can save quite a bit of money

That's the problem as switching to a dumb phone would change my data. Plus what worries me if I can and do change back to a dumb phone without a change and when I get a different smart phone through a 3rd party like Swappa/Ebay/etc. that I would be forced to change. I'm trying to hang on as long as possible to our unlimited data plan. Plus our bill would go up around $25/mo with the new plan. Rip-off!
I'm just going to keep my useless DX2 on the plan for now and pray I don't need to use my phone while away from home. It's going to suck having to pay for a phone that I can't use.
If its gonna be an issue you might be better off keeping the x2 until you upgrade or get a different smart phone.

When I talked to VZW earlier trying to see what they could do with my dying DX2 (nothing, of course) and I did ask them. Instead it turned into a "we can sell you a RAZR" and "switch you over to our new money-saving plan" sales pitch and kept skirting around the question. Typical. I think you're right. I'll just have to fight with this phone until I can get something else.
Verizon doesn't really care about customer needs. Them trying to sell you a phone with their garbage plan is typical. Just hold tight as long as you can. What's wrong with the x2 if you don't mind my asking?

If you went to an actual dumb phone, I don't know if they would let you keep your data package and that would alter your plan. If you get another phone from Ebay or wherever, that won't matter. You are not changing the plan at all. That's the same scenario I just went through with my Gnex. It was my brides time to upgrade. I got her upgraded phone switched to my account and she got my X2 swapped to hers. The plans didn't change and we both kept out plans as they were before.

I decided to keep the phone activated. Although the DX2's data is still screwed up the phone works just fine. All I could think of is that I had some local tower issues. Who knows.

Hello Atrix Owners,
I am thinking about getting an Atrix 4G tomorrow and I am currently using a Samsung Captivate. My question is for anyone who had an unlimited data plan and got the Atrix. Did AT&T make you switch from the unlimited plan when you got the phone?
Also, anyone who had a captivate and went to the atrix... would you say it was worth it?
I've owned a captivate. More that we have an unlocked bootloader, the only thing a captivate has on the atrix is a samoled screen.
I never looked back once I got this device. The hktw firmware feels so fast compared to the cappy's laggy touch wiz. Plus we can actually get a GPS lock.

I wish I could do that... Too bad I am an existing user w/ unlimited data so... There is no way I would start over, but still at $100 + upgrade fee... it isn't bad.
no i had a captivate too and switched to atrix along with my brother. we both kept our plans and switch youll be really happy you did. the captivate was super buggy.
Make sure to tell them to retain your unlimited plan. My AT&T store here automatically dropped me to the 2GB plan. I checked when I got home online, saw this, then went through a long call before they could get a manager on the phone who could authorize putting me back on unlimited..............AFTER the rep told me it was not possible.

I've had to go along with my family and friends whenever they need to upgrade. I can't tell you how many times I've seen AT&T associates try and drop friends and family to the 2GB without warning them.
When I went to get my Atrix they tried to tell me I couldn't switch my iPhone data over.
Go into the store and just makes sure you tell them you want to stay on the unlimited plan. After they get you all setup check your account right there in the store to make sure. You can keep your unlimited plan but sometimes they will try to switch you.

joust to back up what many have said, I went from an iPhone unlimited to an unlimited 4g data plan when I got my Atrix, so they can do it in store, do not let them talk you into anything else. if they say they can't go to another store or something.
p.s. you wil be glad you did, I can hardy wait to see what this puppy can do now that it can be unlocked.
So ifu buy a 2g off ebay will it let me choose an unlimited plan and transfer it over to my atrix even though I've already upgraded to my atrix?

a friend had his thunderbolt stolen & already filed a police report & got his replacement so everything is fine with him now. I'm curious about the stolen phone itself though. I know it gets blacklisted on verizon but what about potential recovery? he never had any phone security apps installed and had that "phone finder" option disabled. can't they still track the phone via gps or something? just with all the security these days it makes me wonder how/if these thieves can even get away with it.
Yes. Go to the Google Market on the computer and have him install Lookout Plan B . This will push the app to the phone and will auto install. Then it will email him the location after a few minutes. This will only work if the thief did NOT do a factory reset/wipe, the phone is still on, and connected to the internet.

Are u sure you are not talking about taking your friends thunderbolt and using it till you get a new phone? next time he should just say he lost it people on here have lost phones got a replacment and a lie or not they ended up finding their phone and still use it as a backup. They just put in their new 4G card and use it to test roms and such. Not bad as a 100 buck replacment.
If your buddy really did get he phone stolen, track them down and deball them and video it with the stolen phone.

I thought that there was in fact a "master" blacklist for stolen phones that all carriers access. It's not as applicable with VZW, but consider GSM phones and how "transferable" they are.
That said, I thought that stealing cell phones was completely foolish (not that stealing wasn't already!).

To the typical person who would buy a stolen cell phone, it's just "a phone" though. People who steal stuff typically don't take things for their own use either. I just gave to wonder when a thief goes to their "fence" with stuff if they even take the phones or just take it all and toss the phones in the garbage.

yeah exactly. replacement phone already came awhile ago.
whatever happened to the original is what I was curious about. I mean, if it ended up in someone's hands(with the bad esn) and they tried to re-activate it couldn't verizon track them down?
I had a phone stolen from me long ago & went through the same replacement process.
I remember trying to call my phone & some girl answered. she refused to give it back but offered to sell it to me.
Now that it's happened this time(although this time it went straight to voicemail upon calling)it just got me wondering.
It's simply not worth Verizon's time nor, in most areas, the police's time, to (actively) look for a cellphone.

I was in the Droid Bionic forum and came across this ( thanks jesziicuh) . It totally works I did it on my wife's line. If you have tired data, call *611, option 4, say add a feature, talk to a representative and add unlimited 4g hot spot to your tiered data line. They upgrade your data to unlimited to accommodate the unlimited hotspot. Then log into you verizonwireless account. Go to the row where it says plan. Then click on change features. Pick your phone you just upgraded, then scroll down and remove unlimited 4g hotspot. Worked like a charm!!! My wife's data tracker on her phone now says unlimited!!!! Got to love loop holes!
Edit: This might actually take several attempts to accomplish. I have heard some people have tried upwards of 5 times before actually receiving unlimited data.
Edit2: Thanks to nomisunrider we have the actual plan code the verizon rep uses to add 4g unlimited MHS. plan code #76153 — $30 Unlimited 4G Mobile Hotspot. I would still ask for the 4g unlimited MHS first and if they give you trouble tell them you were told the plan code is 76153. Hope this helps and cuts down on the amount of calls some people have to make.
watch verizon catches on to this like they did with the early rezound orders

Sorry I forgot to proof read my post. Just wanted to put the info out there as fast as possible. TIERED DATA!!!
I'm pretty sure that Verizon will change your wife's plan back to tiered. Gotta love people always finding ways to exploit companies, and proceed to comaplin when the company comes up with a policy to counter. Prime example were the warranty exchanges issued by Verizon. Even if there was a minor blemish say from a manufactering issue there is a higher chance they would get on your case and charge you $300. That's thanks to people sending in phones that work but with physical damage. Ie someones dog chewed through their phone ,or they dropped the phone with the screen cracked. People exploit and then cry when the company cracks down.
If they change it back so be it. My wife was happy before, but if they don't oh well. Why should we both pay the same for data but I have unlimited and she has 4 gigs. Just cause Verizon wanted to be a bunch of D bags and be like AT&T. Your telling me you have never went to a store and bought something that was miss priced and you knew the price was wrong but still fought to get what the lower price was. Dude this is a modding forum. Not bash everyone forum. Everything in this place is about bending the rules and coming up with work arounds set in place by the carrier and maker of the phone. You are no better than anyone else here.

I called and they told me that unless I was grandfathered in with unlimited data, I could not get unlimited 4 g hotspot.
Maybe they've already caught on.
On the other forum people said it took 3-4 times sometimes before someone would do it. For me I called once the lady said ok. I don't know if it matters I had unlimited on my line so she was able to do it for my other line(my wifes phone).
Lol just got a hold of someone. I ended up getting unlimited data and Sicily hotspot for a total of 29.99 a month to think I was paying a 100 just for 20 gigs.

LOL never said I was "better" than anyone, don't know where you got that . Just saying carriers/providers crack down more because of crap like this. I rarely go to stores for major purchases so really haven't had to do the whole "rage angry customer to save a few bucks" stance yet. They're a business they want to make money, not a crime. If you don't like their policies/bundles then go to another carrier? Just saying you have your choices .
As a Verizon employee, I can promise you that the unlimited data will NOT stick. They audit accounts for things just like this, if you were not supposed to have it, the feature will be removed.
This has been going on for a few days now. I saw that one.person even talked to a supervisor and they said that yes if you get the hotspot it will give you unlimited data. Of course who knows how long it will last but it is something that is being automatically done not random employees doing it on there own.
Of course it does not.affect me as I am grandfathered in.

So with Verizons new data plans getting set to take affect at the end of the month I need to upgrade my phone before that goes into affect so as not to loose out on my grandfathered unlimited data. It just so happens I was due for an upgrade as of the 6th of this month.
My wife currently own the moto razr so I have been able to have some time with this phone. If I go that route I plan on getting the razr max. Now from the looks of it is it safe for me to assume it can be rooted? If I go with the razr I plan on getting the razr max. Im assuming it and the razr are the same when it comes to rooting? I would like some confirmation on that.
Is there anything else I should know that I might not as of right now before getting this phone. I would like to hold out for the SGS3 but am not confident that it will be out in time, and if it does come out I can always return the razr and pick it up.
Thanks in advance for any info.

If you only want root then is ok, but know that the bootloader is locked
A LOT of people are upgrading now before the new plans kick in. Smart move.
Yeah, the locked bootloader is a deal breaker for some people, but the rest of us are enjoying this phone a lot. Yes, it can be rooted, yes, custom ROMs can be installed, but full access is not there yet.
It's been super reliable for me, very fast, and the battery life is unbelievably long.
Everything I've read says that the Razr and Razr Maxx are, hardware and software-wise, the same phone. Just different battery and of course exterior case.
I guess my main question is, is wifi tether usable with the razr?

Thanks for the info on the app from the market. Will def look into that.
With FoxFi from the market you don't really need to be rooted. Also another member posted something about an addon, not sure what he is talking about. I've been using FoxFi for months without any problems from VZW. My bill has stayed the same.

I just got the Maxx to keep unlimited and burn the upgrade.
I ordered my daughter the S3.
My wife is rock'n a Bionic.
Okay I have a few ideas about getting a discounted phone and keeping unlimited data. First off my line is available for an upgrade this November, and another member of my family has an upgrade now, they do not have a smartphone now but will be getting a smartphone with 2gb data. So my first idea is once they get there upgrade, wait until mine is available and then transfer it to their line and have them upgrade again, and then I take that phone and put my sim card into it. Now I'm not sure, but I think the problem with that is when transferring my upgrade and having someone use it, will extend my contract and bump me to tired data, which I can't have happen. So if any of you have tried this method and had success I would really appreciate if you could tell me exactly how you did it.
The other method I read about was having a rep transfer the unlimited data plan to a tired data plan within the family and transferring the tired to the used to be unlimited, and then upgrading with tired data, and then switching the respective data plans back and maintaining unlimited data.
Again if anyone has had any luck with any of these ideas, or were able to keep your unlimited and get a subsidized phone another way, I would really appreciate it if you could leave a detailed response.
Thanks!!
You can use the other person's upgrade no problem, but if anyone uses yours, you will need a new contract and lose unlimited. I don't know about the more complex tiered data switching scheme... sounds like something that might work if the reps were feeling very charitable.

Friend, just go to Gazelle and get a nice used phone for a couple hundred bucks and call it a day.
nevermind
You can use another family members upgrade by swapping phones after they upgrade, but you can't give your upgrade to someone else without losing unlimited. So either you convince your family member to give them your upgrade and you give them your old phone, you don't have many other options.
Thanks everyone. It sucks Verizon is doing this to its grandfathered users, but I guess I will just have to keep using the Thunderbolt until I have enough to buy a phone of contract.

I'm contemplating checking their service out. $50 unlimited everything works well for me since I do make fair use of minutes at times (mostly work-related). If their service in my area is good, I could see getting the Note 2 from them rather than buy it unsubsidized from Verizon.
Regarding the earlier comment about giving your upgrade to someone else, have you verified this? I had read through the grapevine an ok workaround was to transfer your upgrade to another line, use it, then activate it on your line again to bypass all the stuff. Just don't want to try the wrong thing when the time comes and get spanked for it hah.

If memory serves me correct it will lock you in for a 2 year contract so you would end up paying for 2 separate lines that way but I am not totally sure there.
Oh, we have the lines. And dumbphones on them that are used (grandparents on jitterbug like phones...heh) I know I can get away with upgrading one of those lines, then activating it on mine. I was just hoping someone had tried transferring the upgrade from smartphone to another line, upgrading, then activating back on real line. In essence, still using your own upgrading and just subverting contractual stuff by doing all the action on another line.

You should check out the T-mobile thread in the Galaxy S3 section before switching. There are a lot of comments regarding the poor quality of service.

I'll need to take a look at that and Note 2 discussion on T-Mobile. My area is possibly iffy for T-Mobile, which is why I'm concerned. AT&T was historically a problem. Verizon has had the best coverage at home so I'm reluctant to move away from them.
