no problems! just looking for advice - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

i have stock ucle5 with root and using siyah-v3.4.3 kernal. my main purpose for root is to increase download speeds and tether without messing up my unlimited data. i have tried a couple roms in past but they have seemed to slow my speeds instead of increasing them. i was curious if anyone knows a good stable rom kernal combination that will get the results i am looking for. would be ok with stock rom for now until cm9 or another one is complete but i still can't tether. i have tried removing the big brother app but when i do it still wont work. black screen and all. I would appreciate any advice. if i missed this advice in another thread i appologize.

Root will not increase download speeds, nor decrease for that matter. Speeds are controlled by modem.
Cyanogen ROM's will never be complete, they are always working on them, as with AOKP. they are both faster, and more stable than anything stock.
you can tether on any custom rooted ROM. will not happen on stock.
Not sure what all needs to change to allow tethering to a stock ROM. waste of time, especially if you must ask. there are plenty already available.

In the dev section there is a thread that lists most of the available modems in CWM flashable format.
Just flash different ones until you find one that suits your needs.

Wifi Calling. Am I stuck on the same Rom forever?

Long Story short I would have to walk down the block to use my phone at work. Wifi calling is a necessity. When I got my phone it was already flashed to a ROM that to this day I have no clue what it is. I know it is some version of JK6. Anyways Wifi calling is decently stable though I am having some minor issues with wifi connection and my battery is awful. If I flash a new modem would this interfere with the wifi calling's stability?
And having that in mind is there a list of what ROMS include wifi calling? (or can it be installed on any ROM, because I would really like to try Axura or Nero) but I can not go without it on my phone.
Thanks!

I'm sure it can work with axura, I've tried it, not sure about nero, but it should work.
The devs removed wifi calling from roms because its a HUGE battery hog, but I'm sure you can find a .apk on xda, or 4 shared.
I'm running Nero V3 and Wificalling works fine. It even seems to work better then my old JK2 based ROM. I'm using the .apk linked from the slightly better gingerbread theme found here in the vibrant themes section.
Flash a new rom and if the rom does not have the .apk just d/load it... no issues at all with the new roms.
Thanks guys I wasnt sure if the program was ROM Specific or required certain files/settings blah blah blah. But if it should work with any newer Rom I guess I should just get over this fear of flashing and pull the trigger. monkey1911 Ill give that a search right now so at least I can put it in my arsenal. Ill let y'all know my results. Thanks for the help!
I finally took the leap tonight and flashed nero 4.1 (maybe ill do 5 eventually but I like this for my first flash.)
I installed wifi calling and it works great. Had a struggle restoring my contacts because what's on google contacts is not correct and it wants to override what I restored using titanium which is correct so I had to shut it off and re restore the contacts after.
Only issue I am having is my camera advises me the firmware is not current and says continue yes or no. Any fix for this? Thanks for the help guys I am finally glad I got the audacity to flash

[Q] Vibrant on AT&T Qs

Hello everyone! I am brand new to the world of custom roms. Please laugh, but be helpful!
I am an AT&T customer, I received my Vibrant on Friday and have been learning plenty thanks to this site since then. I still have a lot to learn though, and if anyone could answer a few questions I would be very grateful.
I installed my first custom rom today. Bionix 1.3.1. So far it's great. It doesn't have all the Tmo bloatware that came on the stock eclair. I installed this rom because everyone said the GPS was great, it is very stable, good performance and good battery life.
So far, I have not been able to get the GPS working. Is this because I have an ATT Sim in the Vibrant? I am a total noob with this stuff, please don't laugh! I am not sure if the satellites are branded to certain companies or what (fill me in!). I have read that there are apps you can download that can help your GPS, but I am wary until I figure out if the Vibrant is incompatible with ATT satellites.
Can someone please explain in laymens terms what a Kernel is? Bionix came with Voodoo installed. To my understanding, Voodoo helps with audio and video display. But when I try to open the Voodoo app, it says that it is incompatible with my Kernel. How do I get a kernel that will work well with Bionix? (Again, sorry for the noobtalk.)
I'm sure I will have more questions in the coming weeks. Thanks in advance to being such a helpful community (you guys really are from what I have seen here!)
Anyone have some advice
I'd be happy to assist you. All you need to do on your phone is do some GPS fixes. I forgot which ones got my GPS working for my phone but Bionix GPS did not work out of the box. I remember I had to either download a GPSfix or do this
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/07/samsung-vibrant-suffering-gps-issues-quick-fix-available/
I remember the GPS was working great on the Bionix until I switched to different ROMs. You can load any ROM you want but be cautious of what you want out of your phone. Something that looks really nice and productive may give you horrible battery life and GPS.
That's a pretty old article. My phone was made in June 2011. Bionix is supposed to having a working GPS outright. Are you sure this isn't the case?
I remember using it and it worked. But I forgot what I did to the GPS because it was so long ago since I've used Bionix. You can look around for GPS fixes.
Hmm ok. Any advice as far as the Kernel/Voodoo is concerned?
Bali, Bullet, and Overstock are good for battery life and smoothness.
People say Bali is the best but I find that my phone overheats a lot and at times becomes unresponsive. Again, each vibrant is different in how it handles kernels. You have to try some of these yourself to see which one is best for your vibrant.
Has anyone been able to get GPS to work using a Vibrant on ATT's network?

I have a Vibrant on AT&T and other than the GPS sucking I can use it. Any way try this code.
*#*#3214789650#*#*
I tried that and it worked. Will test and get back
How do you find out what modem you are using? I can find the Kernel in About phone but the modem is not there.

Happy to help
I don't know about Bionix, I'm using Project V, Bali 1.8.8 kernel, KB5 modem with no issues.
I decided to try Bali 1.8.8 Kernel with KB5 modem.
I am trying to flash these using Odin. I think the KB5 goes in the Phone slot, and Bali goes in the PDA slot? When I click PDA and try to select the Bali ZIP it doesn't show up, it looks like the only file extensions available are .tar .md5 and .smd
What is a .pit, why do I need it? Where can I find one?
I'm trying to use this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7152078&postcount=2 but I'm not having much success.
I like to use the thanks button
Managed to flash them using SGS flasher. Still not sure what some of this stuff means. It's fun toying though
In the future, just use Clockworks in ROM Manager to flash your kernels. I find it easier to just install from zip (zip name of your kernel). You will still have the same ROM just a different kernel.
That's exactly what I ended up doing. Battery life is terrible. But I guess I should expect it.
I have a question about voodoo. From their site it says you can get a better image, (less blue screen, not as sharp of a resolution so no halo around text, etc). Do I need to use a specific kernel for this? I thought it was an app but couldnt find it in the app store.

Help. Trying to update my Bolt to Gingerbread

Hi guys, I have a rooted Bolt currently running 1.70.605.0. I rooted when i got it back in May and since then I installed a rooted update of Froyo. The phone has been dropping network connection a lot lately that it's very aggrevating. I am thinking it may help fix my problem if I update to Gingerbread with the new radio.
i downloaded the file 2.11.605.3.zip from the TeamBamF.net site last night but now I am sort stuck. It's been so long since I rooted this phone so I kinda need some help. I search everywhere but haven't found a thread where there is like a step by step direction. If someone can provide me some assistance or point me to the right thread I would so much appreciate it.
Vince
The data dropping out may be due to some work/upgrades in your area ... call VZW to see if they know anything.
As far as updating to GB, my advice is tread lightly ... especially if you're just wanting a stock version of it. There are bugs, the biggest being voice mail notifications not working, that may drive you nuts. That being said, there are several custom ROMs around that have fixes/tweaks that make this plagued GB build VZW & HTC released much more manageable. Look around and there are a few "stock" custom ROMs out there - or if you prefer a totally different look/feel there are several Sense 3.0 ports to choose from too.
As far as a how-to guide, the best one I've seen is THIS ONE. Read it and get knowledge my friend
Happy flashing!
2.11.605.3.zip is the [gb] patch - "It changes camera libs, and some insignificant
framework, and apks." as stated on teambamf.net, i did read it is running smooth,
increased battery life but, with issues pertaining to vm notification error and front facing camera
upside down. i agree with Yank talk with carrier, im currently running dasBAMF Forever
kernel 2.6.35.10 stock radios have had no issues.

Can you link me to that download? I would like to see exactly what you are making reference to before I comment.
Some of those update .zips are the full unrooted rom. You wouldn't want to flash that. You want to make sure and look for something like...
"Rooted Debloat Blah Blah Blah"
The link provided by Yank is a good one. #3 for "Flashing a Rom".
Also another hint (just in case you are unfamiliar with recovery). the camera buttons toggle up/down and the power button is used to make a selection. you can select "go back" by toggling to it and selecting it or you can use the soft back key.
hope that helps.
As to the voicemail issue, Eris has fixed that. Took him 30 minutes, he said.

Orange Signal Boost on ICS Roms?

Does anybody know of an ICS rom with Orange Signal Boost built into it? Or a way to put Signal Boost onto my ICS flash? I've tried the flashable zip that was somewhere on the forum but it just kept making my phone say that there was no sim card inserted the Signal Boost app wouldn't launch....
Thanks!
In short no!
The Orange signal boost is some how linked to something in the stock orange ROMs so unless Orange release it to work on non Orange roms we wont benefit from SB.
One of the reasons why I have dropped back to stock + siyah 2.6.12
Although there may be a way I spent a good amount of time trying to find an apk & then get it to work.

It has already been extracted and tested in non Orange roms. Works just as it should.

I stand corrected
Although when I was looking I found no mention of it working & the apk I got wouldn't work (don't know if its the same one as your referring to though)
I downloaded a CWM file, when you flash it it puts the necessary files in place in lets you use it. I've tested that on stock Gingerbread, but it seems that there must be a different method for doing it on ICS. Thanks for your replies anyway guys

Thanks
Hey guys,
Are there any t-mobile USA WiFi calling files on this device? I ask as I managed to get orange UK WiFi calling on my HTC sensation, however the files I got didn't work. Ended up using the USA files but pushing the orange UK apk instead.
Obviously the sgs2 is a different device so your mileage may vary, but the apk is in a thread I made over in the sensation forums.
I can't say it will work, so make sure you do suitable backups. Good luck
Raty
Has anyone yet been able to get this working before Orange release their ICS?
No-one got this working yet?
+1 i would really like to get this working on an ics rom, i tried the other thread too but with my admittedly limited knowledge nothing will work! If anybody has any ideas i am more than willing to try them or help out in any way i can!
There seems to be lots of people looking to get this working, lets see if we can contribute and help out!

Still no progress?
I had Signal Boost working pretty well on my SIM free SGS2 when it was running GB-2.3.4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1208830&page=15
Now that Orange UK has finally released ICS-4.0.3, can't we just extract the new versions of the 6x files and run those instead of the GB versions?
From what I have read the GB version of Signal Boost isn't compatible with ICS and stops the GS2's from being able to read the SIM card.
Shouldn't it be that easy? Apologies as I am a relative noob.

[Q] Data Issue with Phonebreaker 2.1 Rom

Hi Guys,
I recently got the SG2 on AT&T (i777) and the first day I had it stock I was getting consistent H+ connection in my house and pretty much everywhere I was going. I ran the speedtest app a couple times, and I was averaging 2.5-4 mbps downloading which wasn't too bad.
That same night I rooted the phone and flashed Phonebreaker 2.1 rom following the correct steps (Not my first time rooting/flashing roms, I've done it to my Tmobile SG2 a few times). However the following day it seems my data connection has become inconsistent and speeds have slowed down to a drag. The indicator on the phone can never stay on H+ or even H..it consistently cycles from H+ to 3G to H (tried it in same locations as the first day with the phone). I ran the speedtest a few times and my download speeds ranged from 300Kbps to 1.6mbps if I was lucky.
I tried looking around in all the forums, I re-did the APN settings found in these forums, I troubleshooted with AT&T but to no avail.
Anyone have any suggestions? Would much appreciate it as I love this ROM minus this data issue I'm having.
FYI - Stock only shows H+ even if your not actually on it.
Its an illusion AT&T does to make the user think they have great connection everywhere.
Also try flashing a different modem, that might be the issue with your speeds, cause I changed to the leak's modem upon many request.
Thanks LiLChris06!
I tried the KH7 modem which did nothing, and I tried the KK6 which seemed to improve it a bit. I went into AT&T today and they said maybe it's just a defective phone and were willing to switch it out, which I might do.
However I love this ROM so much, is it available without the custom modem you added or with a different modem in the install rather then the UCLK2 I think you included?
Thanks

Hmmmm...what you mean by is it available without the custom modem? Maybe Im reading it wrong. As you know, because you said you have tried different modems, there are many different modems you can try. Shouldn't matter what modem the ROM comes with. Think there is a modem thread around here that has some good info. I think Task also just uploaded the the new LC5 Modem
I should have worded my reply a little better, and it might come across as a newbie question but basically I was wondering if that rom came with the stock modem the i777 comes with because when I had the phone the first day stock, the data speeds were pretty reasonable (3-4 mbps/downloading).
Wasn't sure if flashing different modems other then the one that came with the phone originally would help out my issue, but I suppose it doesn't hurt to try. I did find the UCLC5 modem so I'll try that in a few minutes along with the other ones I haven't tried. If no luck, I'm going back to AT&T to exchange, probably defective phone like they said.
Thanks again for everyone's help
Sweet, found a solution!
I tried all 7 different modems under the same conditions, KJ1, KJ4 and KK6 were around the same ball park. KH7 and UCLC5 were a bit slower but close to each other, UCLC2 was by far the worst..and the winner was KJ2, big difference.
Thanks guys!
