Are there any guides to this?
Should all I have to do is build the kernel sources from the samsung open source center with the build_kernel.sh script and i will have a flashable kernel image?
Not gonna lie but that sounds like a question

It is a question about doing android development

Yeah, someone needs to release new kernels already. It's been a WHILE.
yeah about android development, he wants to learn to build a kernel,he is not making any advances or producing anything(right now) related to the section he is posting in, hence it is a question first, which is related android development....
Not trying to be an ass but your questions get answered in the Q&A section, so the reason people are posting every question they have, some knowing its the wrong section, is annoying and only adds to the clutter
*edit*
Why not PM one of the people who have released kernels and ask them specifically?

you need to include the initramfs. samsung didn't include that in the source. either extract it yourself or find a working one.

now i feel like you're trolling me, but i will answer you anyways.
This is off topic, so i will small text it so if there is relevant info in the thread, you can skip this post:
if this is supposed to be a development board, there should be resources on how to get started developing. I think trying to be hostile toward ANYONE trying to start development of the android platform is a bad move, and leads toward a bad reputation for the community in general. Why be insular?
The reason I didn't post this in the Q&A board is because answers to all the questions in the Q&A board don't have anything to do with android development. They are all user questions, not development questions, and as such, have no place on a development board, however this thread has to do with development, and I don't think there is a very strong argument toward saying that my question clutters this board. Also, my final goal was to update the OP with a guide of how to do it, if no such guide existed.
also, thanks trashcan, i will try extracting it from my stock vibrant

Dude I posted one yesterday! How often do you want releases?
JAC and KK have been a little inactive of late, but theres still stuff happening.
Op: yes you need a ramdisk. Then you need to tell the kernel build where to find it. In menuconfig it's in general/initramfs location.
Once it builds, you need to package it to flash either as tar for odin or zip for clockwork.
Actually we want this DEV section to consist of active development...move to Q&A. I get why the OP put this is DEV but it fits better in Q&A...I also changed the thread title..ENJOY.
Hello People,
I have a keen interest in Android and ROMs etc but no programming or development knowledge, just an interest. I've rooted and put a couple of different ROMs on my old HTC Desire thanks to XDA and its community of developers and will do the same with my SGT10.1 as soon as ICS is stable and has a working camera .... Thank you all!
What I'd like to know is what's different between Google releasing ICS and say Microsoft releasing Windows 7? Why can't I go to a shop or website, purchase or download ICS and install it on my device in a similar fashion to installing a new OS on my PC?
It seems to the ignorant (me) that they make life very difficult for the devs on this site and others! I appreciate that this is probably a stupid question, but I would really be grateful for someone to take a min to explain, for example, what happens after the developers get a copy for the ICS open source code and before they/you grace us with a stable build for a device? Why is the completed ICS from Google not suitable to simply install? One reason that comes to mind is device drivers! Maybe I've just answered my own question!!!
Again, thanks for all the hard work ... whatever it is?
Not meant to sound rude, but do you really want to wait a few years between gingerbread and ice cream sandwich, pay a ridiculous amount for it, and still have to update it almost constantly?
The difference is Microsoft and generous developers.
Microsoft makes millions.
Android open source developers get self satisfaction and other things, but very little, if anything, in monetary payment (donations).
I know Google is a huge money corporation, but I would hate to see things go the way Microsoft does things in regards to operating systems software.
There are many technical reasons related to the many thousands of different devices, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to comment, so I'll leave that to someone else who is.
Actually, I think you did your own question.

Hey people. I am a Linux Kernal and systems developer. I am a newbie to Android Development. I'm a recognized US Linux Foundation and just left my Blackberry behind. I have the I777 and wondering about any major development projects. I have SDK, ICS Source and of course my own dedicated Linux Laptop. Any direction would be appreciated.
Look forward to playing with Android development.

You're a kernel developer and can't even spell kernel properly??? This seems strange.
You're a recognized Linux Foundation? You, yourself, are a foundation?
Your claims of technical skills seem to be quite out of sync with your grammar skills... Pardon me if I don't quite believe your claims because of this. (Especially since you could find most of what you claim to be looking for by browsing around threads in Development and General.)

Well there whoever you seem to be. You may thank my new phone I've had for 2 days now. I definitely did not expect a welcome wagon such as you. Do me a favor and if you can not answer a question with knowledge, please do not bother me.

Also as you know I cannot go directly to Where I need and ask a question because of a 10 post limit. I have been to the developers SDK. Oh. I just realized who you are. I rooted this phone by way of Your Thread. So you have experience and you troll me? Nice guy you are. Oh and welcome. Do not message me or reply in any of my questions.

I take it English is not your first language?

I didn't say to go start posting in Development, I said to READ.
The rules of XDA say to READ and SEARCH before posting. The genericness of your question made it clear that you did neither.

I told you not to bother me. You are not a moderator nor of any importance to me. I did not come on here to be trolled. Sir you need to check yourself. I've already put a complaint in on you. This is a fine hello. I guess you have a god complex from all the reading I have done on your good work, but loose it with me sir. Wow. Cannot believe you are the way you are. Go out more. DO NOT BOTHER ME AGAIN!

OP, he said pardon him if he doesn't believe you. He was trying not to be offensive. A simple response clarifying things would've been helpful. As someone questioned, English is not your first language?

I would say English isn't and probably why he came across that way and Entropy512 responded the way he did.
Did he get banned? LMAO

Looks like it.
Even if English is not your first language - there's simply no excuse for a kernel developer to not know how to spell kernel. That's littered ALL through the documentation of the kernel - so if you're misspelling kernel, you clearly HAVEN'T read the documentation or done much research, and thus are not likely to actually be a kernel developer.
In the I9100 forums I've dealt with plenty of people for whom English is not their native language and that fact is obvious - but ALL of them who claimed to be kernel developers could AT LEAST spell the word kernel properly, and had code and patches to back up their claims.
This guy claimed to be from Long Island and claimed to be a kernel developer - but everything in his posts was inconsistent with those claims.
I'm also going to say he clearly had not read through these forums at all. If he had, he would have realized that wasn't entropy being a jerk. Entropy being hard on someone generally involves a lot more capitals and exclamation points lol

hello all;
i'm a frequent user and supporter of the site, and i have to say i love the site and the people here.
now to more pressing matters i'm trying to find resources and read more and more about linux android development (completely got rid of windows by now ) IT'S USELLESS!!!! to me after a few months of constant linux use. yes linux takes some time, before you figure things out but it's a great OS.
anyways, i've looked in the general developers forum section, and there is just SO many ways that people say you should start (from scratch) and one is contradicting the other (sometimes).... so here is the actual question to the experienced developers out there... where do you guys start ?
little background:
basic C & C++ knowledge
some java.
(i used to tinker mostly with hardware before i dug into android)
any suggestions ??... which guides, sites ?, classess ?? any and all advice appreciated. and i hope it's ok to post this here, and if it's not (mods i'm sorry).
thanks.

I don't think this particular project is active anymore, but I have been meaning to check out the Coding Green Robots series myself:
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/coding-green-robots/videos
I think if you have a specific problem with a project you are working on, people on XDA will help you. For a general intro, I think a book would be the best. Also, don't forget about the Android developer website. There's a training section, including "Building your first app": http://developer.android.com/training/basics/firstapp/index.html
hello,
i am not a programmer, but i used to do as3. and i felt quite comfortable with it. but flash is dead and still, i am not a rogrammer. so i do not want to learn a lot of new languages. but i dont want my as3-"skills" to be wasted . so i found haxe and it sounded quite promising. similar to as3 and compilable to most common platforms. so..
so you know haxe?
do you use it?
what are the restrictions in comparison to native java development?
is it really as easy as they claim to develop for different platforms?
tyvm!
kws

Thread moved.
We are using haxe and haxeflixel at the moment. And the latest version is pretty good.
The only problem we have is to export our games to html5.
Building for Android, iOS, Windows, Linux and MAC works great.
