[Q] Apex and Nova lag? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I notice with the GS3, Apex and Nova both show signs of a shutter type lag while swiping through screens. Anyone notice this as well? I have another buddy with a Verizon version and his also does it. I know I didn't see this type of lag on my E4GT and he doesn't see it on his gnex. I would assume that the additional gig of ram would help keep things smooth as can be but I'm just not seeing it. Other observations, there isn't any lag in tw launcher, tsf shell or even in the actual app drawer in Apex. So I'm just curious why we are seeing this or is there a fix? Thanks for looking.

I noticed this as well. It was more noticeable in Nova though.
I use Apex with card stack homescreen scrolling and a min. scroll time of 40, and it's barely noticeable now.
I suspect resolution and caching are to blame, but not sure if there's a fix...

Did you check keep in memory under advance settings? It seems to help.

Yeah, if I set the scroll speed to a faster setting, it definitely makes it not noticeable but then the animation isn't as cool. Kinda disappointing since apex is my favorite.

In Nova, if you set scroll speed to faster than light and turn power saving off, smooth as butta!

I see lag in every launcher on every ROM I've tried. Nova, Apex, TW all lag somewhat at one point or another. Sometimes they're smooth, other times they're laggy. I'm hoping Jelly Bean will improve things. The CM10 beta seems a lot smoother.

Maybe give go launcher ex a try. Barely lags for me and only when I wake up the phone and not all the time. I use stack transition. Using default, cube in, wave, are also super smooth.

that's weird to me.. I'm on stock (not rooted) running Apex with minimum scrolling time set to 25 (cube out transition) and there is absolutely no lag whatsoever. On any transition type, I just tried several.
I'm usually the first person to jump on lag if present, and I can honestly say I see none on my GS3. T-Mobile.

I only notice it with power save mode on.

Right, but set at 20 and you will barely see the animation. I'm running jb right now and it does the same. Oh well, may just have to deal with it.

Yep, laggy somewhat
Lag is very noticeable for me in both Nova and TW launchers. Nova has "faster than light" animation speed as well as no animation - these help.
I'm hoping JB from CM or Samsung will fix those kiddy issues.

Why the phone is so damn slow?

Hi
Im just wondering...how come such a powerfull phone
Cannot "multi task" with live wallpaper..
When i put LWP the phone become very slow and laggy.

Nope, I run an lwp ..several ones actually. I jump between xda, twitter, facebook, gplus, gmail, corp email and browser all day long and don't have any issues with slow downs. In fact the only time I have ever seen this phone slow down is with the keyboard on occasion in landscape mode.
What lwp are you using. Could just be a crappy coder.

Either the people in this thread don't know what silky smooth is or their phones are better than ours for some reason. But the display at the sprint store dis the same thing. The stock launcher is already laggy as hell so a lwp makes it non issue on stock launcher. But on any other launcher, there are issues.
My EVO 3d was the same way. Pure vanilla phones seem to do better with lwp...like the LG g2x and nexus s

I'm running launcher pro, stock rom, rooted with some build.prop tweaks and I have the same laggy opening of the app drawer. I never contributed it to lwp. After a quick test its only laggy with lwp as the op said. Its not terrible but its not silky smooth either. Everything else is fine.

Here's a tip: STOP USING LIVE WALLPAPERS THEY KILL YOUR BATTERY. Also LWP shouldnt slow your phone down if anything it should be faster since lwp keep your cpu clock speed a bit higher.

Anything that requires resources and CPU cycles should slow things down. Albeit how much depends on many factors. Video based apps like live wallpaper especially could be resource intensive.

Dont you mean lower? Higher, in theory, would make it slower because it needs that power to multi-task for whatever reason? But then again, some of my servers run well over 200% and no one complains? Oh well............

I mean live wallpapers keep the cpu active, you fire up the screen so its already faster than the phone with regular wallpaper because it needs to continuously keep the lwp going? Idk maybe im seeing this wrong......seems like the phone using lwp should be more responsive and able to multitask over the phone with regular wallpaper since the cores have to fire up upon the screen wake.

Launcher Lag

So I did a fair bit of searching on the topic and didnt find what I was really looking for.
I have tried both GoLauncher and ADW EX on my note and am experiencing some severe screen transition lag. Im currently running GoLauncher and have tweeked all the settings to be the fastest and smoothest possible. I am also only running 3 screens with only a few widgets.
What info I did find on the topic was in regards to the Int'l versions. People seem to find that certain roms greatly improve the performance, but for us AT&T people, only having it for a week now, we don't yet have the option to flash a ROM.
I also read that it's because the launchers haven't been optimized for the Notes screen yet. Any truth to that?
So my question is...
Has anyone else experienced lag using launchers?
If so, have you found anything to help reduce it?
Much appreciation in advance.

I had the same issue with ADW EX. Launcher Pro didn't have the issue as much, but you have to pay to resize the widgets. I ended up on SPB Shell on tablet mode and haven't had any issues.

I've noticed lag on home screen transitions on everything (GO, ADW EX, LauncherPro) except the default TW launcher and Zeam launcher.
Yes, I have been through several launchers, all with plenty of lag. I agree that it must be the odd dimensions of the screen. Its certainly not the hardware...
I'm currently running TPC ROM overclocked to 1.83 with supercharger script (I think, lol) all in an effort to defeat the lag! Everything helps, and the difference is night and day compared to stock, but still a little lag.
Also, I INSIST on running live wallpaper, but that's just me being difficult...

Good to hear Im not alone on this.
I just finished reading the threads regarding Da G's root and kernel method as well as TPC rom.
Just to clarify the broad steps.
1. Root using regular or O.C. Da G method.
2. Reset
3. Flash TPC's Rom
The reason I ask is bc TPC's post looks a little cluttered to me. If I read correctly, I dont have to push the libraries if I choose the O.C. method bc TPC included them?
Once again, thanks!
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
Once you get the drivers installed (took forever on my computer) and you download and run Odin, connect your phone, browse to the extracted .tar file in the PDA section for the ROM (TPC V2) hit start. Then flash the kernel the same way.
Don't worry about the libraries for the kernel, they are included in the ROM.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
See that's where I was confused. So the TPC rom will also root?
I thought I needed to do root w/ kernel before I did TPC's rom.
Glad I am getting clarification vefore I started lol.

Yes. I found the screen transitions on goLauncher stuttered and was unusable for myself.
BUT I found a proper setting over on the International Note Forum which worked. So, I'm back to using GoLauncher and am very happy regarding my Note launcher setup.
Basically In Preferences:screen settings:screen transitiion speed:custom slow down the "screen transition speed " to 25 and "elasticity " to 55.
So in this case the key was to slow down the transitions not speed up which just made t worse.

I found nemus launcher and it has been smooth. Transitions are good and so is the app drawer
Is it just me, or does GoLauncher put the apps in a crazy, non-alphabetic order?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
They do, but you can move them around with a long press.
Im still a bit confused as to what order I am supposed to be doing this root/rom.
Let's say I have Da G's stock kernel and root. I want to try the overclocked root and TPC rom.
TPC rom first then the overclocked kernel?

It does. As you add and update apps it gets out of order. You can hit the menu button when the app drawer is open and choose the sort option. I just reselect the alphabetical option and reapply and that orders them correctly again.
As far as lag, definitely noticed it when I first loaded GO launcher but I use the bulldozer transition and a lot of the lag had become almost imperceptible. Still see some occasionally, but nothing that affects my experience.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
GO Launcher is mentioned all over the forums as being laggy. I wouldn't use it myself because it 'phones home'. I'm thinking that's what the lag is all about. Look at the permissions and you'll see - they track and sell user information. All of the GO products are like that, I don't use any of them. I know you can block it, but why should I have to do that? I'd rather pay for software outright.
Never had any lag issue on my Atrix, and that was with 6 screens, a ton of GoLauncher apps and scrollable widgets. Ran smooth as butter.

Mine is stock rooted, I have no lag... I switched to Launcher Pro though, although I was kind of liking CheeseWhiz's launcher, it's not really that bad but the fact that folders in the apptray and folders in the launcher desktop were completely separate pissed me off.. In hindsight if I really wanted to use CheeseWhiz I could have just put all of the apps I want to hide in one folder and not otherwise had folders in the apptray, but I spent 30 minutes or so organizing apps in folders in my apptray only to find out you couldn't put those folder on the desktop then. Oh yeah, forgot to mention that I'm using ADW EX for my launcher as well, which can do a lot for reducing lag if you have any. My phone didn't have lag anyways before I went away from stock, I just like being able to flash stuff and mess with my phone. No lag in ADW EX? You must have very few icons, folders, and Widgets on your device. I found ADW EX really jittery, especially with the fancy folders on. Even disabling that, it was jittery. I eventually just went back to Launcher Pro.

I only ever use one home screen with 5 apps and one minimalistic text widget. That being said, adding more screens and populating them did not show any lag still, and my app drawer is totally smooth and opens instantly as well. Who knows, maybe your device doesn't like ADW EX?

The only thing that bugs me is the smooth/slow transition when launching apps. Compared to Apex in which the apps launch very quickly. It's like Go launcher is almost toooo smooth in that respect.
I'll also monitor battery use via "bad assbattery monitor" since the last version definitely used more battery than other launchers.

Take a read thru the description on the blog, all the changes are there.
Namely, the major change I like is the new method for adding shortcuts, widgets, etc. Long press any empty area on the screen and instead of the ugly menu, a list is displayed at the bottom.
Also, the app drawer (the screen that shows the list of apps) is also much better.
Is it more fluid/smooth/faster? Eh...
It could still be better but its never going to be as smooth as IOS due to how Android works vs IOS. Android physically moves each pixel around on the screen using 'math' to determine where each pixel should be drawn, one pixel at a time, then draws the frame, repeating frame by frame where as IOS uses pre-processed pictures in rapid succession similar to how film on a projector works.
Downloading now can't wait to try it.

It sounds like you're definitely having an issue with the launcher configuration. I've dealt with that before too, but the good thing is sometimes I'll have trouble with nova trying to get the settings dialed in perfect and it still will feel off, and I'll try apex and the stock settings out of the box perform crazy fast and smooth. Or it might be vice versa, but I would tinker with that.
Also, make absolutely sure you aren't restoring your launcher backup or settings or anything that you used on the S3 over to the DNA.

I'm talking about the settings in the Nova launcher settings, not the ones in developer settings. There are speed settings in Nova launcher's settings that you can tell it to give priority to speed over graphics.
Edit: Found another person's post on another site about it:
To make it even faster go to nova settings, look and feel and change scroll and animation speed to faster than light.

That does make it feel a little faster but i was saying that nova launcher made my phone unresponsive once.. The button clicks would take few seconds to register.... A reboot fixed it... Thank you. I am trying the faster setting and i like it
I tried adw but went back to nova cause I just am familiar with it.
I changed the settings to faster than light and its way better so far!!

Check if you have kill all apps when leaving in the developer options. This doesn't play nice with the launcher.

I don't recall seeing an option like that.

there is an option like that (dev options -> advanced -> "Don't keep activites") but i don't have that enabled...idk. i cleared cache with nova launcher and it oddly seems more responsive..
Maybe you just aren't used to sense? Sense has always been known for being a heavier skin. I'm fine with it, however sense 5 is way faster and smoother. Just because the phone doesn't feel fast, doesn't mean it isn't. It is a very quick device.

I don't know if this thread is dead but for people with this issue in either nova or apex in their respective advanced settings you can make the launcher stay in memory. This brings redraws to nothing on apex for me.
