There are OTAs and there are Fastboot files...WHY NO ROMs? - Motorola Droid RAZR

HEy all..
there are tons of leaks out there, but not one single ROM. have asked many people but no one seems interested. Anyways, There are OTAs and there are fastboot files everywhere..but not one single stock ROM that I can flash through CMW of the asia or EU build?

Fastboot files ARE stock ROMs.

Just use RSD LITE to flash them.

There's no roms because you haven't written them yet. Get to work!

What is the point of making a flashable stock rom?
But you might dont search, because there is 2 or 3 stock rom deodexed flashable through CWM by matt or frasertag, and i'm working on flashable asia.
Anyway, we don't have lot of rom because lockedbootloader make dev flee away.

How on earth does the ability to flash from the SD dictate what is and isn't a ROM? You couldn't flash Samsung stock builds from SD until Chainfire built Mobile Odin, does that mean those weren't ROMs before the app was released?
You can update a fastboot-flashed stock build using an OTA zip from the SD card if you really want to. Most Android device manufacturers do things differently, this just happens to be Moto's way.

Well, I haven't had any experience with unlockable device before this, so I haven't seen any advantage being so... (except maybe ability to go back to GB)
But look at BootMenu... and MIUI...
Both gave me -almost- completely different experience with my razr.
I'm eager to see what unlocked BL or -so called- kexec would bring, yes, but I'm not missing them at all right now.

Custom kernels really are the heart of development, unfortunately - different modules for new features, different CPU governors for better battery life & performance, optimisations and more. It's one of those things that needs to be experienced to appreciate.
Was key to my initial experiences with Android as I came to it from the HD2, which was by nature a custom job. Experimented with Motorola devices for six months, back with Samsung now - although I miss the build materials, the development is a breath of fresh air.
Hope Moto make a Nexus device, it's their only shot at regaining the attention of the development community that they lost when they locked down everything after the original Droid.

Changin a kernel could improve the phone experience drastically. A better kernel coul improve the battery life AND the performance, The first time i changed the kernel on my nexus one i was astonished, it was overclocked and it halved my consumption (i took the half of the usual % during the same usage) and the phone was smoother too.
You can't know the difference until you feel them ^^

I know nothing about programming, cooking roms etc. for sure with unlocked bootloader things would have been easier, but take a look at moto defy dev section. Froyo kernel and quarx and epsylon ported months ago cm9 and now with hwa with no official libs and drivers. And the first jb cm10 is already out from quarx. And all that with locked bootloader. The razr cdma roms as i read are very nice. So the problem is with our gms razr. Its all about devs.

Xoom is pure google device and Moto cannot lock it, I own one and its one of the best tablets out there but regarding the Atrix someone release "sbf" with unlocked bootloader by mistake (I think from Motorola) and now they have unlocked BL.
There is slightly hope for us to get the BL unlocked if Google starts to change things around in Motorola...and imo they need to do it fast.

board-mapphone.c:char *bp_model = "CDMA";
board-mapphone-spi.c: char *cpcap_bp_model = "CDMA"
Just a guess 'cause I didn't have time to check better:
cpcap_bp_model and bp_model should be changed to GSM or it shouldn't be changed at all. The userspace radio layer is in Android ROM and since our MDM6600 (same for DROID RAZR and RAZR) is able to work both in CDMA and GSM mode, the kernel code should be the same. CDMA as bp_model can be only for reference or for changing operational mode in the BP kernel driver.
The kernel should be exactly the same, the only unsure thing is the radio driver, anyway, in case GSM RAZR kernel will be released "too late" we can use this on the GSM RAZR relatively easily. We need in any case the unlocked bootloader for testing what I'm saying but I expect to have the RAZR (GSM) kernel prior that to happen.

You don't really expect to see official ICS on the Razr anytime soon, do you? And yes, I know what Motorola told. I also know what they used to tell in the past.
but will this at least allow customs roms like like liberty 3 or cm7??

ICS.......

So, I've been running the ICS leak from April on my original RAZR since the day it came out and I absolutely love it. I have also been reading all of the speculative posts about the" official" release to be available soon. I have 2 questions/concerns that I would love to hear some opinions.
1. What will the official release give me that the leak doesn't?
2. How do I back up all of my apps and progress on my games if I do decide to update?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

It will be bug free, or close. Leaked betas point this way. It may have bugs but will be really impressive SO. Probably much better andstable than actual gb.
Btw. I think you guys are too smart to believe in a 100% bug free system. Think you got it

Because Motorola killed the phone. You will be stuck with stock Gingerbread roms or unoficial custom roms without hardware acceleration.
The phone has nice specs, it's a damn shame tho.
the atrix actual price is 220 euros and a new cm10 roms seems to have HW accel too with JB
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1934662&page=94
They still have a lot of bugs and it's uncertain if devs can fix it.
Don't get me wrong, I love my phone, but I wouldn't recomend it, at least not till the devs make a 100% stable rom with decent battery life and HWA working. This would never happen with Samsung.
^^^^^^
Not correct. This would happen with any manufacturer, eve Samsung, all except Nexus devices. Do yourself a favour and buy a Nexus, that way you will have an updated software always.

Android 4.4 May cause issues with g2 locked bootloader.

I was doing some reading and came across this interesting article. I hope our devs can UN dm-verify our stock kernel.
It may make rooting future devices much more difficult. I wonder what bug crawled up Google's butt.

So do we get the pitchforks out and commence advance on LGs social media, etc? To get them to churn out an official build, of course.
It's a great phone and I bought it knowing they might not be quick on the draw. Didn't consider that 4.4 might make all these ROMs all for naught. Still, I needed a faster phone and this certainly fits the bill!
At same time I did know that short of a GSM Nexus that I couldn't have guarantee of latest Android.
I'm stuck on Verizon until March 2013. I can then slap a GSM Sim in, hopefully. But I paid retail so it's not like I want to buy a new phone anytime soon.
Well. I have myself to blame. Again. But I am off contract in March and this will never happen to me again!
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk
I am hopeful that when 4.4 comes out our devs will be able find a way for us to upgrade from 4.2 to a custom rooted 4.4 with out any issues. I do think that even stock unrooted this phone is fantastic it is carrier iq that is killing me. I'm sure att will put it in 4.4 also. Even though it was the carriers idea LG allows it to happen so I blame them also.

LG to my knowledge locks the bootloader on all its devices regardless of carrier.
This is troubling. The reason I chose the G2 was because it was the closest thing to the Nexus 5 on Verizon and had good developer support. Hopefully our fantastic developers will figure out a solution.
From what I understand, unless we upgrade to the official 4.4 LG ROM, there is no chance of this happening. Is that correct ?
I guess I'm selling the g2 for the nexus 5

From what I understand, unless we upgrade to the official 4.4 LG ROM, there is no chance of this happening. Is that correct ?

That's my take on it. It is built into the 4.4 kernel. I wonder if this had anything to do with Google buying Motorola in August. Lock the phones way down for the carriers.

If there will not be a 4.4 rom within 3 months guess it is a dirty shot for those who bought it and want to buy it like me
Looks like I'll be rolling with Nexus devices from now on. I guess it was bound to happen though, I'm sure OEM's wanted another security layer because of bootloader work a rounds. On the upside though, there will be less threads on device release days asking for root and ROM ETA's!

the funny thing even though android are opensource, the phones and hardware are not. Thats where improvement is. If you create an abstraction layer, where due to propriatary stuff its closed and updateable by vendor. Another layer, the OS can go on top, thusly eliminating hardware dependancy as well as increasing updatability. OS and security issues can then more easily be adressed, without the now unduable vendor involvement needed in integrating the new OS with all the hardware specifics. Given the entropy rate of new phones coming out, its undoable. This last, as wel as commercial reasons is why updates and fixes for security holes dont come fast. As of yet.
Right now we see the true devs juggling various devices as the rate of entropy in new devices is higher then more true devs coming in. Devices not even picket up by community cause there are no devs for it. The breaking point has come.
A new design must be made for this momentum, a new standard

The bootloader may be locked, but since custom recovery is available our kernel can be modified...so we should be okay...right?

right. as long as you can flash custom kernels all this stuff should not be a problem.
it's about time to build some kitkat
KitKat has been out for like 5 days. Let's give the developers some time before everyone starts freaking out for no reason. They always find a way.

I think people who are already rooted will be ok , they will just need to avoid the official 4.4 until a custom rom is built. The bigger problem will be for new unrooted owners. I would imagine it being tricky to flash a custom kernel without the ability to root. I also agree in time the devs will figure something out.
