[Q] trick kindle app that 10.1 is i an Ipad? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is there a way to trick the, kindle app for the, galaxy 10.1 wifi so that its made to look like an ipad?
Reason being is that I need a book from amazon and its not compatible with Gtab but it is compatible with ipad.
OR if I can purchase the kindle ebook and then transfer to gtab?
Patiently waiting for galaxy note 2, atrix 4g for now

No, there is no way to 'trick' the Tab 10.1 into thinking it's an iPad (that's a crime against God anyway).
If it says 'iPad ONLY', then it is iPad only.
It could be that it has interactive diagrams etc that haven't been coded to work on an Tab 10.1 or maybe it's an Audible book.

Thank you for the reply.
Has anyone ever purchased a kindle edition. Book and successful. Transfered to another format?
Patiently waiting for galaxy note 2, atrix 4g for now

There's plenty of free books on the Kindle store; download one and see if it works. I'd suggest getting one about proper punctuation...

Lol. UR. A -! genius ? THANKS!

Calibre.

Is it good for a 9 year old boy?

Hello everyone,
Need your help folks.
I need a tablet for my 9 years old boy, and I am a newbie.....
I thought about either Asus Transformer or Galaxy 10'
- fast browser with flash, youtube, facebook
- skype with video
- avi, mp4 etc playback ( I dont want to convert files, I want to play them stright
after downloading)
- easy data transfer from my PC
- GPS navigation (copilot, igo etc) without using data
- some games working like : moshi monsters and android stuff (I ve got Galaxy 2)
Do I need a custom ROM for all above options?
Please share your thoughts, I ve got 2 weeks to make the decision.
Thank you for your help
Can I be your son?
What you ask is possible. And maybe look at what friends his age are using in general?
I'm just curious because I have a 5 year old, do his 9 year old friends also have a laptop or tablet?

My thoughts? especially if you are into video thingy (and you don't want to convert it), forget honeycomb tablets. Just buy Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 or HTC Flyer instead.. they run every and everything smooth and stable !
Is the tab just for him? Not trying to be rude, but I can't understand why a 9 year old needs a tab. Wants yes (mine does) but not need.
My oldest is 10 and he has a mid-range laptop. He gets some use for school, but mostly he uses it for playing games. I can control to an extent what he sees and does while surfing, and at the least keep close tabs on what he does online. I wouldn't think that's possible with a tab.
yeah, can't do something wrong for your son.
LOL I dont think GPS navigation, skype & facebook is for his son !
No. No 10" tablet has the right price/durability ratio for a 9-year-old kid.
Too expensive and too easy to break. Cheap netbook is the solution for kids - more durable, far cheaper.
It will be great for your 9 year old son... until he discovers "free porn"

- avi, mp4 etc playback ( I dont want to convert files, I want to play them stright

- easy data transfer from my PC Depends. Who's doing the transfer, you or him? It's easy to use File Manager HD and connect to a LAN share and then Copy/Paste to the Tab. That's how I get the mp4 files to the Tab. Easy for you, might be tougher for him.
- GPS navigation (copilot, igo etc) without using data YES. It's a very, very nice GPS device.
- some games working like : moshi monsters and android stuff (I ve got Galaxy 2) YES
Do I need a custom ROM for all above options? NO, mine is stock, unrooted.

One caveat: Unlike the iPad no password entry is required when making a purchase in the market. DO NOT have a credit card number in his Google account. That way he can't purchase apps or make in-app purchases without typing in a credit card number.

+1. Make sure you get a warranty with accidental damage. I'm sure your kid is great, but it takes only one drop to ruin these things.
Have you ever used a tablet? It's not the same as a PC. Many things still don't work. One of your requirements is that video work without transcoding. You're not going to get that from a tablet (I use three seperate video programs because some work for some files, and some files just need to be transcoded. It's hit or miss). I don't believe there is a data-free gps solution just yet (someone correct me if I'm wrong). The "fast" browser is still buggy, and pressing buttons or drop down menus can still be a problem. Finally, for a 9-year-old kid there isn't much in the way of parental controls for android yet. If he can use google, he's going to find all kinds of interesting content...
My advice would be the same: get him a cheap netbook. If you really want him to have a tablet, get one of the smaller lighter ones (7") or at least one of the burlier ones (like the iconia or the xoom) so it can take a short drop. There are a lot of smaller lighter choices from china; build quality sucks but they cost less than half this much and have much of the same functionality. The GT10 is very thin (which is why I like it), but it is also far more likely to be damaged by a short fall or a wrong step. At least go to the store and have the kid play around with one for a few minutes, see if he can find his way around it without help (or you will become tech support...).
Good luck! Please post back your experiences. Many of us will be interested in how your kid takes to a tablet computer.
Find out what your kid wants the tablet for games etc or just surfing the net my son is 14 bought him a iPad for xmass never plays it he just wanted it for hell of it

GPS/Navigation without data
Is that really possible? I tried to open up maps/google nav without being connected to wifi and got a pop up stating I needed a data connection to use the app. Since then I have pre-cached certain areas on maps but as far as turn by turn directions doesn't that need data?
Let me put it this way, my son is 4 years old. I let him play with my iPad and my SGT 7", and he does just fine with them, he's gentle, and treats them with care. He can navigate through them like nobody's business. He'd probably be fine using my SGT 10.1, but I won't let him mess with it simply because it's not as rigid (tough) as the other two, and accidents can happen. If you do end up getting your son an SGT 10.1, I suggest getting a rugged case for it like an Otterbox. (though that defeats the form-factor if you're getting it for thinness)

If there is one thing that i will say for the apple ipad2 it is that they are for kids and old people. If its for your 9 year old son, i would deffinately get him an ipad. But if you need things like flash then i would go for a netbook. There are many good options, small form factor, things like that.

Galaxy TAB.. NO NO NOT for a 9 year old unless you have an otterbox defender case which will never be realease. Otterbox had a press statement that said they will not be producing any otterbox accessores for the Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1. (a bummer I know)
Now my 4 Year old daughter has an ipad 1 encased in the otterbox defender series case. I have all types of books and learning apps on there for her and she loves it. Even have her movies on it (64GB Ipad 1 3G & Wi-fi) sure we don't use the 3G but I only paid $300 for it on ebay. I must also state that while I think children should get used to these things early my daughter is not your average 4 year old. She actually reads on a 2nd grade level. I think the IPAD 1 should be considered you can get one cheap on Ebay or CraigsList. I don't like apple's locked down devices however I couldn't find nearly as many Educational apps (formatted for tablets).. just my 2 cents. I am by no means an apple fanboy. I have the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and I have the Nook Color.. My wife uses the Xoom.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9

Who.is going to sell there flyer and get a galaxy Tab 8.9?
Sent from my HTC_Flyer_P512_NA using xda premium
Doesn't Fit in my backpocket.
Even with Honeycomb beta running on it now. I don't wanna have a Tablet without a pen anymore. Too useful while surfing, for all the smal Tickboxes and micro X's to close layer banner ads without resizing.
Not to mention the notes you can take. Propper writing recognition will come sooner than later, too.
Sent from my HTC Flyer P510e using xda premium
I've ordered one. I'll keep the Flyer to compare and will decide after a while which one to keep.
I love my Evo View so I don't think I'll be getting anything different. I do wish HTC would release honeycomb for it though.
Sent from my Evo View 4g
Very tempting. If HTC would hurry up and get Honeycomb on the Flyer then I wouldn't necessarily consider the Tab 8.9, but I'm itchin' for some HC.
? So install HC Beta...
Why is it that practically every time a new tablet comes out, someone has to ask "are you gonna return your Flyer and get an XXX"??? Much more so than other devices I have followed on XDA. Do you guys really have that much buyers remorse? Do you really have that little confidence in your purchasing decisions?
Answer is NO, I'm not going to get the GT 8.9. HTC products have much better build quality. Casings on the Samsung tablets are cheap and plasticky. And, as others have mentioned, I like the 7" form factor. Highly portable, and very easy to handle with one hand.

Granted it's not difficult to accomplish for most of us, but most users don't like to jump through hoops to install "beta" software.
Whatever happened to making informed decisions about your purchases and then sticking with them instead of screwing over stores with petty returns?
On topic, the 8.9 is too big to be pocketable so nope.

In short: yes. I think the Evo View was not the best purchase I've made. I wanted (still do want) a small tablet, but I'm completely dissatisfied with Sprint's reliability around here.
If I hadn't scratched the tablet a few days after I bought it, I would have already returned it to Sprint to wait for one of the 8" tablets.
What are your other options? When the View came out it was the ONLY option for a 7" tablet with a radio, other then going with the original galaxy tab which was slower. Unless I missed something, this is still the case.
psh shoot i will pm me and well set something up
What's wrong with the flyer?
Kris
why dont you guys just wait till the galaxy tab 7.7 comes out. i think that should fit in the pocket and it has better specs the the gtab 10.1
Nope. but the galaxy 7.0 plus might just push me to buy a samsung.
I love how I can just put my flyer into the back pocket of my jeans.
I hope it runs better than the Galaxy Tablet 10.1. I just sold the 10.1 for the Flyer and am honestly shocked how much smoother the Flyer is. Plus Samsung is always slow with updates.

The upcoming Kindle Fire for $199 looks like an attractive option, for those who haven't bought a tablet yet. But I don't I would trade my Flyer for one of these. From the reports, it seems to be a slightly updated version of the RIM Playbook hardware running Android; in Amazon's rush to bring a tablet to the market for the holiday season. But for those that have been on the fence about getting a tablet, $199 is a killer price point.
Hardware-wise, I would not want to replace my Evo View with the Fire...
but software-wise, the Fire might be a winner. The real problem I'm having right now is being able to view streaming content on my View. None of the major streaming providers work yet: Amazon doesn't have a Prime/Unbox app for Android, Hulu+ doesn't work, and NetFlix doesn't work.
I would be very happy if the Fire allowed me to stream videos to the tablet. That would be enough to convince me to buy more DVD's on Amazon - especially the ones that come with free streaming copies.

If you update your Flash player to 10.3, the Flyer will play Amazon instant view vidoes for Prime members in full screen very well.
Did you do your OTA update for the view? NetFlix works fine on mine with no hacking, straight from the market. I also stream Amazon prime as he said. All I'm missing is hulu.

7" tablet

I am looking to get a tablet for my niece. I want to try to keep it below $400. It needs to be a 7" tablet and it will be a wifi only tablet. It will be used primarily for skype, internet(browsing, gmail, maps), and media playing(netflix, mp4, youtube video). It needs to have either an sd or microsd card slot. I would like to ge her one that has been rooted and has some custom rom's for it. Preferably based on HC but at least GB. Currently looking at the original galaxy tab(old but a lot of customization available and a decent performer) and the dell streak 7(also old but a lot of customization for it). I am open to other 7" tablet suggestions as well. I just don't know enough about what it is out there. What would be the best way to go? I am alos currently researching the galaxy tab 7 plus.
Ummm, I would say a Nextbook Premium7 (http://www.nextbookusa.com/productdetail.php?product_id=7), but I think the deal breaker is no Skype, and its a relatively new device, so development is slow, but will pick up when we get a working root method.!

Indirect Samsung Question...

how many of you guys who have a SGS2 also have a tab either 7, 8.9 or 10.1 and do you use it often or infrequently? I'm asking because I really want one but dont know if it makes any sense with our awesome phone. So input would be appreciated
I've got a 10.1 tab. I use it, but not a ton. Mostly for reading books, watching TV and movies, and Web browsing. It's great when traveling.
this is were im flip flopping I dont travel much i would mostly use it as a reader/ occasional gaming so I dont know if its more want than actual need/use. PS thanks for answering
i have the 3g xoom and a sgsII. lately ive been on my phone more but thats just cuz its new to me (only had it about 2 weeks now).
i like my xoom more for web browsing, email, and games due to the larger screen. its also easier to navigate between tabs in the browser.

I've got a 10.1, use it all the time. A lot of the time at restaurants, my phone is only serving to tether the tab.
Task650 also has a 10.1 - in fact long before he started creating GS2 ROMs, he was maintaining Tab 10.1 ROMs. His are what I use on my 10.1.
I don't maintain a 10.1 kernel because it's a pain in the ass, and also pershoot knows his ****.
The 10.1 is a great device - even when stock! (other than Samsung's ****ty initial 3.2 update - they fixed it fast though.)
However it is getting a bit old now - The one complaint I have about the 10.1 is the crappiness of the Tegra 2. Unfortunately if you want Exynos you've got to drop to 7" screen size.
If Sammy releases an Exynos-based 10.1 or 8.9, I'm selling my 10.1 and grabbing it in a heartbeat. Tegra3 quadcore - not so sure, the Tegra3 will probably be as much of a disappointment in the quadcore market as the Tegra2 was for dualcores.
I have a 10.1. I don't use it a ton but when I do I love it. It is really nice for sitting on the couch and surfing or playing a game as well as for reading. If I had the choice I might switch to 8.9 though.

I have SGS tab 10.1. But I mostly use my SGS2. My wife uses the tab most of the time. As entropy mentioned tegra2 is not that good in handling here contents without using third party software. Also, I was watching fast five using pocket blu, the videos were quite choppy, but it played well on SGS2, until I rooted SGS2.

I used to use my tab for browsing and youtube only, which it is fantastic at, much better than my sgs2.
Then I put ICS cm9 Alpha on it.
The tab has become so much more useful that I've almost completely stopped touching my phone. I can blaze out an email significantly faster on my Tab than I could on a PC. And not only that but the multitasking is instant. You should see me use this thing when I'm emailing, grabbing info off the net, and Facebook chatting at the same time. I look like a mad man and something straight out of the movie Minority Report.
I love my 10.1

after the note are you still using your tab or ipad?

So I'm using sprints gs2(epic touch) and a 7.7 galaxy tab samoled+(hk version)... and this Note is taunting me... I'd like to know if people who own the Note have not touched their tablet since.. be it android/ipad. It would be fantastic to eliminate a device and have one badass one. And with that 1280x800 I could imagine it .. but I'd hate to switch over and feel a need for a tablet... any thoughts would be great..

Back in the days when I had a Samsung 10.1 & SGS2, I sold the 10.1 once I upgraded to the N7000. Got the Prime once I was able to find the 64GB version. I use both but it depends where I'm at.
i use my prime while i am at the house.
I'm using my ipad alot less now that i have my Note. Still like the larger screen real estate of the ipad

I own a Lenovo ideapad Y560 and have a desktop. I found no need whatsoever for a tablet considering my laptop can do magnitudes more compared to a tablet. Buying a note just made the gap between smartphone to tablet to laptop almost non-existent.
Then again I expect tablets to perform almost on-par with lower to mid-end laptops. There's no reason a tablet (iPad 3 is like $700 here..) should be running Android or iOS other than ease of use when they could be running Linux or Windows. Why have a four core tablet that can't run my Guitar Pro 6 or have a full on media editor and have no S-PEN input device.
I imagine these dumb-tablets as I like to call them won't stay dumb for very long

thanks for the reply's... guess I'll hold out for a sprint variant.. If it was unanimous on the Note completely replacing your tablet then I'd probably still be on the fence or heading down to AT&T to sign up while my Epic touch 4g is still worth ~$300
Mostly for sitting down on the couch for a quick read.
I came from an LG P990 O2X and used my laptop.
I use the laptop a lot less now, almost everything is more convenient and natural with the Note.
When people see me with it and remark on it's size, I say it's just right, I wouldn't like to go back to the smaller screen.
It's also worth bearing in mind the Note has more pixels 1280 x 800 than the IPad 2 with 1024 x 768.

I use my kindle fire for games cause it has a little more real-estate screen wise. But other then that and testing some of my development I don't use it that much. I think it is more cause the note has a constant connection where the Kindle I have to make sure I have wifi. That and the note is pretty awesome.
My Nook Tablet looks almost colorless after Note. I think that 7" tablets and e-readers suffer the most since they are close in size and inferior in resolution and color. I decided to use Nook for games and books primarily. So, my Note doesn't have any games since Nook has 933 mgb of free RAM and handles games better.
