Galaxy S3 as USB drive for radio - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I have a Pioneer DEH-P690UB head unit in my car and before I got my iPhone, I had an iPod connected to it via USB (and before that, just a simple flash drive) which the unit was able to read and play music from. Once I got my iPhone, it could not read music via USB, but it still allowed it to charge via USB. Now with the S3, I connected it to the USB, and its an endless loop of "Connected as media device" displayed on the phone, <Charging>, "N/A USB" displayed on the head unit, and stops charging. I've tried switching USB types from media to photo, and allowing USB debugging to no avail. The reason I ask, is because I can see it on the PC as pretty much a USB storage device. Ive tried taking out the SD card and having a single song in the base directory displayed (/mnt/sdcard). Nothing. Are there other USB settings I could possibly tinker with? I really don't want to get a car adapter and rather use this, but if I have to, then I have to.

My Pioneer won't recognize it either. From what I understand, if you use a USB device, all of the songs have to be in the device's root directory. Obviously, you can't do this with the S3, so, it basically doesn't have the ability to work.
Just like my deck, yours has a built-in rear auxiliary input. I'd either use that or Bluetooth. Those are really your only options, unless you want to get a new deck with front auxiliary, or use an FM transmitter (which sounds horrible).
I'm going to check out the rear auxiliary input on mine today, and see if I just need a cable, or if I have to use some adapter from Pioneer. I'm assuming it's an adapter, but we'll see.
---------- Post added at 11:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:41 PM ----------
Well, after looking, the rear auxiliary input just needs the normal 3.5mm mini plug cable. No adapter necessary (thank goodness).
You can probably just take it to Best Buy and have ask them to pop it out for you without having to pay. They're usually pretty cool about that, as it only takes them a few seconds. I would suggest not trying to pop it out yourself, as each manufacturer has specific little tools for taking their decks out.
After they get it out, just plug a cable in and route it, and pop it back in.

[Q] Audio Output Through USB Without Dock(s)

Is there a way, without have the home or car dock from Samsung, to get the audio to come out via the USB port?
I have tried both Car Home and Desk Home apps (also both the ones that came pre-installed on Bionix V and the Version 2 ones from the market) and I see no setting to enable audio through the USB port. Is there some "trigger" that gets fired when plugged into a Samsung dock that enables the USB audio port?

Sorry for the cross-post but check out Post 63 and Post 64 in the Captivate Audio out through USB (car dock) thread.
I don't think it has been validated, pretty much just speculation at the moment.
Well, that is not exactly what I am talking about.
My car reciever has a USB plug that I can hook up the phone with.
I can charge my phone but I cannot get it to play any of the music on my phone. My reciever states that there are no tracks.
A little more complex would be to have actual audio routed through the USB port like if I had the official sammy docks. I do not have a dock.
I suspected that we could just flip a bit here or there to get audio out through the USB (not just use the phone as USB storage for the mp3 files).

No charge when usb connection on car stereo

Hey everyone,
I'm having problems when connecting the thunderbolt to my Sony usb stereo. It asks me what I want to do and I choose charge only but it doesn't charge.
I use to have the Droid X and it worked fine on the stereo.
Anyone having the same problem?
Any hints or tips for this?

Your deck usb port might not provide enough power for the thunderbolt...but might have for the droid x. The usb addon for my pioneer never worked for charging when I had it installed. Just read flash dives, but that's just my two cents on the problem...could be something else.

I know some devices (like my Motorola dumb phone) will not charge over generic USB power (power and ground only), but if you use a USB "Data blocker" (grounded data pins) some of them will charge. This may be the same way... or it could be the whole requires more than just 5V to initiate charge without detecting data (meaning a PC connection).
You could try placing some MP3s on your SD card and tell your radio to "play" the usb drive and set the phone to automatically mount as a drive. That may do it, if not, look into the grounded out USB cable.
I just installed a lighter receptacle behind the stereo and ran up a car charger (not a usb charger) through the back of the dash to the car dock.
I was able to get the phone to charge via the USB port on my kenwood deck, but it was USB power, and discharged faster than it could charge.
It now reports charging AC, and charges normally. Cost $6 at radio shack.
I just tapped into the positive and negative wires that were already going to the original 12v lighter.
I'm actually having a reverse problem. My phone charges in my car stereo's USB slot, but the receiver doesn't recognize it as a USB drive. The phone doesn't even notice there's a USB connection, even though it's charging.
Oh well. It has AUX too so, no problem really.

I have the same problem, but I suspect that's because of that stupid "Verizon Mobile" virtual CD on the phone. I bet that's what your deck sees and can't find any music.
If anyone knows how to get rid of that partition without rooting the phone, I'd like to know.
In my case I have to use the Bluetooth connection. That works, but it doesn't give me the song information on the deck. Might have to revert to an old iPod for our music in the car.

With my old Incredible, my car stereo acted differently. It would see the phone and the phone would ask me to go into disk mode. After a few moments of scanning, the receiver would say "Invalid Media". I was also on CM7 for a little and I was actually able to get the receiver to play music thought it.
It's a Pioneer DVD player.. Unfortunately with the Thunderbolt, it doesn't do any of the abolve. It just says "No Device" and the phone doesn't even do anything except charge. Doesn't ask me to mount.
Okay I found a solution. I believe the problem was the Verizon crap that ran when plugged in. I installed The Perfect Storm Rom and now its charging fine.

[Q] plugging into car stereo usb, not recognised

i have a pioneer premier that worked flawlessly with my iphone. it has 2 usb inputs, and aux in. I WANT TO CONNECT VIA USB. Please dont offer advise about bluetooth or headphone jack.
Normally, if i plug the phone into the laptop, i can choose all the options like charge only, mount as disk drive, etc. When i plug the phone into the wall outlet, i do not get any options, it just charges. When i plug it into the car stereo usb, it just charges, and i dont get any options to turn on mount as hard drive.
does anyone know how i can "force" it to mount as a hard drive, or how the phone actually knows its a laptop and an outlet? maybe i can jumper some wires, or something.
thanks
I too would like to know this

I've tried the several listed proper sequences, I've tried USB debugging on and off, and I've tried rebooting my phone repeated times. I have the Menotek adapter others on here have said they've had luck with... but no matter what I do, neither the phone, nor the several TVs I've tried it with have recognized each other. I feel like there must be some setting or program I'm missing. Please help.
I get sound, no video
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
My phone is the att stock version. I have the menotenk with rcp and it works every time I use it on a HDTV but if i use it on a dvi device I have to use headphones or any audio cable in the headphone port or at least use a bluetooth audio other wise I get video that plays about a frame every 3 seconds and no audio. If I am not watching a video it will work fine... but that don't seem to be your problem.
Debugging should be off. This is my procedure:
*Make sure you hdmi cable is already connected to the tv. For things like RCP most tv will only work on hdmi port 1, so just to be sure use port 1 on your tv and make dobule sure you are using the right cable for the port.
* Restart your phone, do not load any app that does not load automaticaly.
Make sure tv is on and set for whichever hdmi port that you intend to use.
Hook hdmi cable to your adapter.
Connect your charger to the adapter. (Most tv's will have some sort of reaction to this. My small tv goes from no signal to no video when I do this, my 52" goes from a blue screen saying no signal to a black screen, this might not happen on every tv but if it does in your then you can guess that connection is good.)
Connect the adapter to your phone. (When this happens you should see the charging icon in your phone, also, you will see a message that says something like "hdmi connected", I can't remeber off my head)
In a few seconds you should see your tv flicker and they you should see video and have audio.
Before I got this menotek I bought another brand and it was touch and go with that one, I had to try the above procedure a couple of times and sometimes it would work, most times it would not....
If you are stock and it don't work I will have to say that you have a defective unit.
Sounds like a hassle to me.
I'm on stock firmware using the OEM Samsung MHL adapter. I simply pull the HDMI out of my PS3, and plug it in to the MHL adapter. Then I plug in the power supply. Then I plug the MHL adapter in my phone. Works flawlessly every time...tested on multiple video apps and games.

Hassle? How so? Sounds like the same thing I do.... I'm trying to help the op, telling him how to connect it probably will not do, If he is reading the instruction on the adapter he is alreading doing that same process, I'm trying to give him a better picture than the instructions on the adapter documentation.

Connecting to a Projector (Wired Casting Screen)

Hi
How do we connect the v30+ to an LCD projector? [wired-casting, i guess]
I have this USB-C to VGA adapter cable which i am trying to use. As soon as i plug it in, a small pop-up message comes up at the bottom saying "secondary screen connected"... But nothing happens after that - i mean the projector screen does not show the phone screen. The USB plugged-in choices show the usual charge-only/file-transfer options only, no new option regarding the screen-casting or secondary screen
If i unplug the cable, i get a similar pop-up saying "secondary screen disconnected".
I have searched through the display (and other) settings - i am not able to find anything related to this. Googling didnt turn up with anything either... except for one reddit post which still remains unanswered
Can you guys help out on this please...
--
Edit: It is not a cable issue - the same cable & projector works perfect when i plug in a s8+ phone - not even any pop-up on the phone - the projector screen just mirrors the phone screen.
Do you have developer mode enabled? Maybe there are some extra USB options for what you want to do?
Thanks for the efforts
Yes, i have developer options enabled... there are actually a few more usb options that i didnt mention when i typed the first msg - but none related to the so-called "secondary display" that the phone tells me it is connected to.

I'm actually wondering why nearly NOBODY is talking about this highly desirable feature in a phone - casting your screen to an audience through a projector.
Are we keeping quiet becoz the v30 doesnt have it??
I just googled this topic a bit and you're right, there's nothing there. Only relevant info I found was where somebody tried to connect a G6 to LG's own 5K TV(!!) via hdmi and they couldn't get it to work, because G6 doesn't support Slimport protocol or something like that. So if G6 doesn't support it, then most likely the V30 doesn't either, and the only way is wireless casting. That's mind boggling, really. And stupid. And downright mean. G6 and V30 being marketed as ultimate media phones and then this.
Samsung, on the other hand, brought back wired casting support in S8. The S7 didn't have it as far as I understand.
I wonder if Oreo update will support it.
That reddit post i mentioned is here . Give it a look. There is mention about the older MHL and the newer Slimport - which the S8+ has and the V30 doesnt [or does it? ... I mean - THAT is the original question here]
It mentions about an youtube video where someone seems to be shown connecting a v30 to a PC through usb-c to hdmi cable
Couple of such working cables have been mentioned - one here and another BlackWeb BWA14HO0002
--
The added problem for me is that most projectors here work with the good ol' 15-pin VGA connector... so, i'm gonna need to buy a HDMI-VGA converter (this i can buy easily though). But overall, i am weary of spending money for a feature which is NOWHERE mentioned for sure in official user manuals and the like.
--
and oh, someone suggested me to check out one MHL Checker app from playstore ... i did. But i still cant figure out if the answer is a yes or no... it gives some weird thing like "the mobile can support MHL(HDMI). You don't use the MHL(HDMI)"... whatever that means

Hi,
1) The MHL Checker app is telling you that the phone DOES have MHL output but you didn't have your cable plugged in (at that moment).
2) The info from Reddit is wrong.....the poster mistyped it. The cable he's referring to is a "BlackWeb BWA17HO0002"...and it doesn't work for my V30 (which HAS the Oreo update)..
Sorry to bring up a dead thread, has anyone made any progress on USB c to HDMI/USB/PD hubs? Looks like oneplus 7 pro had similar problems and they fixed it with an unofficial kernel.

ALRIGHT! The adapter worked! I just had to change the settings under Developer Options > Networking section > Select USB Configuration to PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol)
Hope this helps!
Again, here is the link to the adapter. Only $12.99 right now. Can't beat it.

Thanks, but I was already aware of HDMI adapters working. I was talking about the hubs with USB and sd card readers with power delivery.... It worked on my v20 not v30.
Just for fun, I just plugged in my V30 to my LG TV (older model) using a USB-C to HDMI adapter I have for my MacBook Air. It worked immediately, no problems.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KMC3DTL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_PamhDbRMDC09D
I also tested a USB-C to DVI adapter on my old Dell monitor. It also worked but disconnected and reconnected a few times, almost like the connection was easily disrupted if the cable was moved around. If I held it still it seemed to hold connection just fine.

This is actually an interesting discovery for me.

*Hello zombie thread*
I tried a cheap (AUD$14) USB-C to HDMI+USB3+(USB-C power in) hub, and it works. To the USB port I attach an unpowered USB3 hub with keyboard and mouse, and am outputting HDMI to monitor. All 3 peripherals work simultaneously.
I do have to plug the HDMI into the hub before I plug the hub into the phone. Otherwise no external monitor detected.
(I have V30+ 930DS on stock Android 9, bootloader unlocked and Magisk. For those interested I was using Sentio Desktop and Easy DPI Changer -> 300dpi to give me something decent size on the monitor)
I tried this method for connect laptop to projector with USB. And successfully connected you should try once this for your projector.
