I have had the Galaxy S3 for just over a week now. It's rooted, but still running the stock ROM. Honestly, I like it how it is, though I did want backup and recovery options. Waiting for Cyanogenmod's version 10 when it's more stable. ;-)
Anyway, for now the WiFi connection keeps turning ON when I'm just out and around with the phone on 3g (ugh, LTE not lit up yet..). Is it turning on because I'm getting spotty signal? I don't really see it being a battery drain (I'll get a full 24 hours or even 36 with regular usage and WiFi on:good but it's unexpected behavior - and I don't like unexpected behavior.
Any reasons why this is happening? Any fixes for it?
Are you on Verizon? They set it up to keep reminding you to connect to wifi when it finds an available wifi connection. Search through the development section as there are ways to get rid of that.

No, Sprint. Should have specified that, sorry. But I'll poke around in the development section and see.
It was buried in Settings, More Settings, Mobile Networks, Automatic Connections. So simple!
I think that option is so it can connect too 4G as well, unless I totally misunderstood that when I read it

On my phone I get 15-20mbps on speak easy speed test
When I use googles android wifi tether or the verizon app I get 1mbps down
What gives? It seems lie the tether app is using 3g instead of 4g
I have tried wifi tether and the hotspot app and both have the same issue
I also searched and others are having the same problems but no solutions posted.
Anyone get wifi tether to use the 4g instead of the 3g? please post how
Yea same here.I've searched the Net looking for an answer but no luck.I even tried flashing different radios but no luck either...
I did that there's a WiFi tether beta but who knows how long before they get it working with 4g, not to mention make it compatible with every phone and network out there.

heh. i go to the library often and will occasionally want to play Left 4 Dead online. problem is, the library's wifi is super slow and regularly disconnects.... so i will use pdanet to my laptop. theres no 4g in my area but at least the 3g is stable enough to keep me connected and my ping averages 200 - 300. sometimes itll jump as high as 700(which really sucks) but im at least surprised that the 3g can even do that.
So nobody has figured out why tethering only uses 3g instead of 4g????
Just figured I'd let you know that I let a guy tether his iPhone (just to show him LTE) to my Tbolt recently and he got 12dn/3up using the built-in tethering hotspot in CM7 (he ran the Speedtest.net app on his iPhone).

It's not a universal problem. It sounds like a "just you" problem and maybe a few others. LTE works fine for me and I get 1.5-2 Megabytes per second on it with CM7.

Well, it's not "just you". My phone won't USB tether if I have "LTE" radio selected. If I just select EVDO, then it will tether. Running OMGB.

Not everyone is having the problem. Seems to only be a handful of people.
I'd say if you're running cm7 and you messed with the radio settings other than just using the toggle for 3g and lte/3g auto, that is why your tethering is not working. Don't mess with those and dont force it to LTE only.
Anyone ever figure this out?
I'm running stock rooted Galaxy Nexus and I'm having the same problem. No matter what method I use to tether it seems that the tether switches to the 3g radio after a few seconds of turning it on.
I know this is a TB thread, but I have the same problem so it must not be a TB issue...
Everyone posting is running aosp roms, could that be the issue? On shiftsense i get 10-15 down with pings around 100. I also use the wifi tether fix i posted in the general threads. Ive flashed the newest radios, but never change the settings for lte/cdma.

I want to add another data point. I can tether to my android device and get about the same speeds I get on the phone. However, when I tether to a windows machine the speed is extremely slow <1mbps u/d. The only way to get better speeds on the PC is to run filterproxy on the phone. It's still about 35-50% of the bandwidth of the phone but a little better. Could this be related to like a MTU size on the PC or something timing out when being routed from the PC through the phone?

I use Wireless Tether for Root Users on my TB, and I get about 10-15Mbps down, but only around 0.5Mbps upload.
Does anyone know how to stop the wifi scanner once it connects to a wifi network. I am sure a lot of batter is being wasted to scan for wifi networks. It keeps saying scanning for wifi even after successfully connected to my home network.

If you have sprint... turn off that crap "automatic connection help" bull****. Same thing happened to me till I disabled it.
Hmm..... I have AT&T SGS3. Glad you were able to turn it off.
I saw this as well, but I think it probably only does this when you are looking at the available wireless networks page since that's when you need to see the networks. It probably doesn't when you aren't looking at it. But I guess it's the old argument when a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

If it scans only when I am looking at the wifi settings, then it should be fine. My only concern was that it may be using battery all the time. Thanks.
You should be able to change this in build. Prop

Or if you download Blade Buddy, you can change the wifi.scan.interval from that instead of tinkering with the build.prop.
there is some known wifi issue
I scanned this forum before creating this post and I'm pretty sure there isn't one already out there but please don't flame me if there is. I couldn't find any and I spent a good 30 minutes last night, trying to find something like this.
I purchased a used HTC Rezound recently but was unable to get 4G LTE to stay ON. I surfed various forums for a possible fix but couldn't find anything that I hadn't already tried.
This morning, I think I might have found a work-around. Here's what I did.
After activating the line and being able to get sporadic 4G LTE signal on the device, I went into the wifi settings on a hunch that maybe some unexplicable interaction was happening between wifi and the 4G radio. Wifi kept wanting to turn itself on and I kept fighting it by turning it off.
I located my home network and clicked 'forget network'. Once I did that, I went back to make sure wifi was OFF and that Mobile (data) was ON and WHAMMO!! Immediately, the 4G LTE indicator popped back on and I've been rocking 4G for about 2 hours now, without a single blip. I've watched an entire episode of 24 on Netflix in an area of my house where I've confirmed that I have a weak signal and still, no problems at all.
So my Question is this: Is there any other way to disable wifi without having to 'forget' the network when I want to use wifi? (Other than what might seem obvious by turning wifi OFF when I know that doesn't get rid of the 4G dropouts).
It's really only an inconvenience at this stage. All I'd have to do to connect is re-enter the password and since I don't use wifi when I'm at home because I have Unlimited Data, it's not really a big deal but it just seems that the OS on this phone was purposely designed in a way to take people OFF the 4G network when their phone is 'familiar' with a wifi system they're near.
======================== UPDATE ====================
There is no issue with the phone. The issue was an activation issue and I was able to eliminate the problem by trial and error. It turns out, the way I was able to get the device to connect had to do with re-seating the SIM. Once I did, the phone has been flawless in connectivity to both 4G LTE and wifi regardless of the combination of wifi settings. I hope this is useful to anyone reading the thread.
Is your Rezound stock or custom?
LTE will disable when WiFi is activated, most LTE phone does this by design. I have experienced where my Rezound's WiFi would want to turn on automatically on the clean rom, re-flashed and everything was good.
I personally never had issues with my Rezound. If fact, the Rezound has one of the best radios to date. The fact that HTC integrated the antenna into the battery case housing is what makes it a strong contender for receiving radio waves..

Go in advanced settings wifi settings (menu advanced settings)and disable the automatically turn on wifi setting. (Not exactly sure what its called as I hate sense and I'm not running it) but ull see it in advanced settings and then when u want to actually use wifi just enable wifi.

Well, I'm on stock ICS but rooted with S-OFF. The wifi, even when OFF kept wanting to turn ON by itself when I wanted it to stay on 4G. The only way I could get the phone to stay on 4G was to 'forget' my home network.
All is well now. Weird huh?
Sent from my rooted HTC Rezound with S-OFF using ICS on Verizon's periodically blazing fast and mostly reliable network
The Rezound has a poor shield on the 4g radio chip which causes interference in music. So, logically if stuff can get out, then wifi can come in and mess it up.
Dude read what I said and it will never automatically turn on again.
That's the reason it kept automatically turning it on. And if u haven't done what I said then regardless of you thinking its fixed it WILL turn on again by itself.

There's no such setting that I can find within the settings and I know which setting you're referring to. I saw it before on my Thunderbolt but for the life of me, I can't find it on the Rezound's menus. Anywhere. I looked several times. I'm pretty sure it's there. I just can't find it so the only way I could get the 4G to stay on and not have wifi automatically connect was to 'forget' the wifi network.

Here it is. Which setting would it be? I wasn't launching any apps when the problem appeared where wifi kept eanting to turn on. I just powered up the phone and couldn't get 4G.

After root I tried the method that worked on the S3 and it didn't fix it for me. Anyone else try yet? Or have another method besides modifying the wifi_networks_available_notification_on value?
ya the Sq lite method doesn't work on Jellybean. I'm also looking for a way to remove it.

Are we talking about the message that says "Wi-FI networks available" if you leave Wi-Fi enabled 24/7 and travel around, and your phone finds open routers?
Because I am rocking an old Thunderbolt still with an ICS AOSP ROM and it does that as well.
If this issue is different however please explain.

There is a notification that ALWAYS displays your WiFi status. Doesn't matter if your WiFi is turned off, connected to a network, or aren't connected to a network. It never goes away.

Ah thanks I see now. That is really stupid. On every other version of the Note 2 (Intl + all non-Verizon US carriers) there is a Wi-Fi toggle in the top power bar, but not on Verizon. GG Verizon ruining everything they get their greedy little hands on.
They're like the Electronic Arts of the cell phone market.

Do you have "avoid poor WiFi connections" and "connection priority mode enabled"? If so, un-check them. It works for me.

not sure if this is the same as your issue, but some of us have noticed that the LGOG doesn't seem to toggle between networks (ie: from LTE to wifi or vise versa). toggling airplane mode or rebooting seems to correct it.

Sounds similar to my experience. I'll pick up the phone from time to time and notice that WIFI icon is off and it's on 4G. When I go to the Networks menu it shows my router but says "poor signal". Oh really? it's 18 inches away and every other wireless device stays connected rock solid. I've tried toggling Wireless off/on and Airplane mode off/on and the only way to get it to reconnect is a full reboot. I'm hoping this new release fixes it - if not, it's going back to ATT.
