I'm looking for some opinions and comments here...
I thought I might return this phone to Radio Shack because I wasn't sure if it would get JB. But after spending more time with it, I don't care if it doesn't get it--wow! I was amazed by the audio and video as it was. But today I spent some time with the Developer Options. Except for overclocking the phone, I can't see a reason to root and install CM* or anything else. There's so much in it now! There's no way I'm going to get this out of an iPhone. My coworker just stares at it and says, "two more months...".
So that said, are folks still looking to install CM on this phone? What else would you get out of CM or another ROM that you're not getting from what the phone has now?
Thanks.
As far as getting aosp... Better performance, better battery life, no sense.
I can't wait for it to drop. I will miss the HTC camera app thouggh.

Id like to run AOSP..But just like the Evo3d the proprietary camera BS will keep me in sense in some form or another..Developers couldn't do anything to keep the 3D cameras and i doubt anything can be done to maintain image sense. :crying:
I completely agree. This phone does not need JB..
I love it completely stock, and the other guys love the roms.
This is a great phone for rooters and non-rooters

Getting the camera working, sure. Getting the camera to utilize the image sense chip in AOSP, I see that not happening. But I've been shocked before so I guess we will see.

Exactly, there's a difference between vanilla JB and JB with a Sense overlay. People aren't seemingly seeing the difference.
And I can live without image sense. As long as the camera can still take the same quality pictures, I'm game for CM10 or CM9. Or AOKP.
OP, I've flashed CM9 and the speed difference hurts my head. It proves that Sense is slowing down this phone. Definitely looking forward to seeing what this phone can really do!
That said, I agree that the phone is terrific as is! Many will be plenty happy without custom ROMs. But many, including myself, are anxious to push this thing to the limits and AOSP will likely do that, performance-wise. I can't wait!

Yeah, the speed difference is maybe even more significant to me than EVO 4G stock v. CM7. It was like JB is, just smooth as butter.

What is ugly about vanilla ICS? Put that same background on your phone, get a sense-like click widget, and most people will be convinced they're running Sense.

Ok, i would recognize in a hot second it wasnt sense if i put a sense clock weather widgit on my homescreen. For 1, the status bar, the standing battery is ugly imo, the data bars...all of it up top is not pretty to me. The dock on the bottom, isnt my style, when you open the messaging app, sense is just so much more sexy, and elegent to me, even the people app, i feel the same way about. But they are right, a vanilla non sense rom of course will b smoother, and faster, and less battery draining. But im willing to take a slight hit on those for the looks of sense. I just love it.....and always have.

Very much so. I came from an OG Evo and I can definitely feel the difference. Idk how the rom development is with the X but here its still great. Worth it all the way, unless you would want to wait for the rumored Evo 3D LTE or the new HTC One. I love this 3vo though and it has more than enough under the hood for everything I use it for. Alright, I've never had a X-peria before, I've always wanted one but in the end never did. Why? You can thank the marvelous EVO for that. I don't really no stats on the X-peria but on the Evo, I can definitely give you some advice and some well recommended tips in getting it far in beast mode. I've had 3 galaxy s2's, nexus, droids, mytouches, no phone compares what the evo does, in my opinion. Its fast already and wait till the new one comes out, 1.2 ghz processor, dual core, battery is decent but mine is great. There's so many options man, and its pretty much the same setup. Actually I'm running X-peria graphics on my rom thanks to Steal's inbreded rom. Its magic man. Simply great work. My phone has been put to the test with even Droid Razors and Iphone 4s and makes them look like turds that need to be returned to their stores hahah. So yeah man I well recommend you get the Evo 3d or the new Evo that's coming out. Either way you're a winner man. As for rom recommendations go, go with Steal's inbreded rom and get the amazing EXT recovery. Good luck!
Thanks guys, money is my major problem or else I'll have an Xperia S by now. XD how's the speaker quality on this? I've noticed a few roms with beats audio, is it just a equalizer setting or does it compare well up to a HTC with actual beats built in?

In my opinion, it just makes the speakers sound louder. But I don't have beats headphones to test em with. Volume+ on the app store does basically the same thing as beats. But the speakers are okay, just kinda low on a stock rom.

I'm probably going to wait until htc's next sprint flagship.

actually I'll be happy for another year when they come with their next offering...just like I was happy for the year I had the 3d except the development for the lte will be much better because there won't be any proprietary drivers withheld that keeps roms from being complete ala cm9 a year later and still no camera. Absolutely. My only beef with the Evo is its size (I have relatively small hands), but Nexus is about the same anyway. Actually had to get a small case for the evo to make it thicker though.
Runs great, very good phone call clarity, display is visible even in the sun (when turned up to 100%). At night on darkest setting it's still not too bright, even as a bedside alarm clock.
Yes, this phone has exceeded my expectations.. its super fast, they have finally made the hardware meet the demands of the software, only downside is that the SGIII comes with 2GB of ram, this would have made the evo even better.. but it hasnt slowed down yet.. i love it

There's one thing holding me back from getting the EVO 4G LTE and that's MIUI! I was wondering if anyone has tried the MIUI home launcher yet? I may just get it still I just want something a little more fast than the Ol OG EVO.
They are working on miui search development thread

I had the original EVO, and I was really hesitant to take the step to LTE but I love it. The screen is just beautiful. Had to get used to the size, but that was an easy adjustment.
There are of course still a few hiccups, but they are excusable. Personally, the changes they made make the phone feel more professional and efficient, which was a big reason I disliked Sense before. You can access quick apps from the homescreen without having to mod; the quicklaunch is super, too. I'm not sure what exactly makes this one so much greater than any other phone currently available, but I've never regretted the decision.

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I'm leaning toward the Evo over the SGSIII for a few reasons: SGSIII has a home button which I think throws off the design, the color options are not that great, and the use of touch wiz. Although the use of custom roms can remedy the touch wiz issue, it won't resolve the latter. HTC on the other hand, kept it professional looking, has no on screen physical buttons, and uses Sense. If I do get this device, it's getting rooted and romed right out the box.
The phone looks great, the hardware is amazing, but the signal is utter crap.
I've tried stock and multiple ROMs and no matter what I do, I have either a signal <-100 dbm or a data lock. It's insanely frustrating. I also can't get it to actually go into roaming exclusively, whether I use the Roaming options mod here at XDA or the Roam Control app (both used after rooting.)
If you have solid Sprint service in your area, no question that you should give this phone a shot. If you go anywhere that your signal is less than 3 bars, try it out for a few days, see if you'll actually have a signal.

He did cut the size down quite a bit, but you're right. Developers tend to estimate and exaggerate a lot, which I'm sure is something you've noticed by now. It's all about having the best looking ROM.

Can I just throw some love to the evo's display. I've had mine for like 5 months and this display still blows me away. Colors are perfect and text is so sharp.
Also the build quality still amazes me and people I show it to are always impressed with how thin it is.
Battery life is also great and I can pretty consistently make it through the day with typical usage.
I don't use the kick stand much but when I do it is very handy to have.
Been running stock sense for like a month and dont hate it. It adds a lot of functionality and the keyboard is pretty accurate with very few mistypes.

Unless you use a stopwatch and measure app opening and operation times between Sense and AOSP, there's really nothing "slow" about it. The processors we have in these phones are so insanely fast that OEM overlays basically do nothing to the speed at which Android operates.

Do you have any screenshots or stats of your battery life? I'm thinking about switching my gs3 for my mom's evo but I want to make sure that the battery life won't be much worse.

Love my ELTEVO. There's no phone out there right now that I would even trade even for.
Maybe when the note 3 comes out.

The new camera is nothing to scoff at, to be fair.
The One looks nice. Low light camera performance is super important to me so I look forward to seeing how it performs.
Stereo speakers are nice but I'm sure ill still want headphones. Hopefully the evo lte gets some sense 5 love.

Love my evo. Best phone I've had to date. Even if I had an upgrade I wouldn't use it right now. I don't see any device as a big upgrade from what we got

Coming from a nexus 4 the EVO LTE is awesome. My Nexus (bought directly from google) had this weird thing where it rattled, and it honestly felt cheap. I like the back glass of the n4 more than the plasticky look of the evo but I stuck a case on it and now I don't notice it at all. Basically the same in terms of processor speed, and the battery life on this phone is light years better. Also, having a microSD card slot makes me feel privileged.. 16GB just doesn't cut it. Oh, and i personally like the Sense camera better. Not sure which one the tech gods think is better but the only advantage the N4 had was that "photo sphere" garbage which quite frankly wasn't that special.
So compared to the N4, I love my EVO.
Oh, and the GS3 felt like one of those toy candy-filled phones you see at the dollar store.
That is all.
