Noob Rooting question - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ok i want to root my HTC One S so i can install ad-block software but will rooting my phone wipe all of my data? like all my apps and pictures? because i've had my phone for a while now and customized so much stuff, i dont want to go back to square one after rooting.

No, it will not. Rooting will not affect anything on your device.

Usually, rooting the device does not affect the phone's data partition. However, some methods of unlocking devices (like with my Photon) causes the phone's data (such as apps) to be erased. I don't have much knowledge with the One S, so don't take my word on this. The good news is that either way, your pictures should be safe if they are on a SD card.

Rooting has nothing to do with your data. That is factory reset that causes the data to be wiped. And that too phones data. Apps and all. NOT SD card data.

No "unlocking" is another name for rooting (and maybe S-OFF) your phone.

[Q] Not Turning on After Software Update

So I just got the phone today and decided to upgrade to ics, that was a big mistake. The phone won't turn on . When I plug it into the computer it has the green charging led but when I plug it into the charger nothing just a dark green led that will blink every 10 seconds or so. don't care if I have to downgrade I just want it to work. Also when it's not plugged in it does the same dark green blink and when I try turning it on nothing no vibration or anything.
Use flashtool to unbrick your device.

Weird, maybe you flashed it wrong. Anyways, go back to GB and then flash again to ICS if you'd like to, you shouldn't get any troubles downgrading.

As for my knowledge this is not possible! but next time use the "MyPhoneExplorer" it keeps contacts in PC so whenever u flash firmware, install its client on phone and run this software on PC and then it will put all the contacts that u had on ur phone before flash. last night i had done rooting on my phone by following steps hope it will also help u for flashing a firmware via flashtool.

Provided you updated via seus try this

I don't think you'll void your contract because you are re flashing the service providers update .
Your problem may be due to incomplete flashing .

Which provider do you have? You are scared if you flash an international firmware instead of the one from your provider, you can't use sim card or what's the problem about that?

You mean your provider, right? Not your contacts like everyone else are saying. Well, nothing will happen, it's just an international firmware, you won't lose the contract... Don't worry
Don't worry bro, It has nothing to do with your Provider. Go ahead.

The other thing is can I root it if the phone won't turn on? Its not like it overheated since there is still a slight green light that blinks.

1.He upgraded his device to ics and the phone won't boot.
2.He doesn't want to downgrade (gb) or reflash (ics) using international ftf firmware (flashtool method) .
3. He always used official update software and he is afraid of voiding the CONTRACT with his service provider if he uses flashtool method.
4. Please read the op clearly he doesn't mean CONTACTS he means the CONTRACT with his service provider.
5. To the op,
Please post your problem step by step clearly and highlight the important words by using upper case letters or different color.
6. As I've never used a network contract phone I cannot comment on this thread confidently. So others please try to help the op.

One won't lose the warranty if he/she fails in an official upgrade, send it to the dealer for repair before trying oneself with Flashtool, which may alter the build.prop, and else. Right?
By the way, my Xperia Mini Pro fails to change the input method by long pressing the text input area with.431 ics ROM, any hints? Thanks.

If you have never rooted and bootloader is locked (and I think it is), please send it to service or give it to the shop where you've bought it. This is better, and because it was an official update, you should be able to claim your warranty.
If you try to do it yourself with flashtool, you will modify your phone and if they find out, your warranty is lost. So please don't flash it, give it to service

[Q] water damaged phone stuck on "Quietly brilliant" screen".

My phone is stuck in the "Quietly brilliant" screen after it was submerged in water. I don't care about saving the device (though that would be cool), what I really want are the pictures on it. We took it to a cell phone repair company and they said they soaked in in some solution, but it didn't help. The pc doesn't recognize it when its plugged in. It sees something is attached, but says usb drive malfunctioned or something along those lines and no drives show up in explorer.
What are my options (hopefully I have one)?
Thank you for any help
Were you rooted? Could try holding power and volume down to get to bootloader. From there go to recovery. May or may not work
Edit: in recovery mount (not sure if internal can be mounted this way, been a while since I've done it)

When you root and install a recovery you get the options to do certain things. From my understanding, there's no usable recovery otherwise? Are you trying to recover the internal sd data? It's possible you could flash the signed htc stock JB update through bootloader. The only thing that would resolve is maybe the system going corrupt, it's worth a shot. That said, it may not do anything. I don't think you can flash the recovery without booting the phone up and going through root process, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, I would like to recover the contents on the internal sd.
If I took it to someone good with a soldering iron, do you think the internal memory could be transplanted to a donor phone?

I don't recommend rooting XZ1 if it's your first android. It requires unlocking the bootloader which would wipe the DRM keys. you would lose camera low light denoise and some other functions.

Please post how things went - especially if you are rooted (?), as its easy to end up unrooted at times.
OTA is failing for me after unrooting. I also restored the latest restore.img from the relevant thread before I attempted to update.
Anyone with root able to get OTA installed?

Never-mind had to unroot it would not work otherwise. But still wont finish - maybe because i may still have a different then stock kernel even though I unrooted.

You need to unroot, and also make sure you have the reserve.img partition restored. If you unlocked the bootloader after the .27 OTA, reserve.img is deleted during unlock.

All I have to do is to not screw up, and after having been on Samsungs since S3, where most things were straight forward and relatively easy, there is a good chance I will.
Will be doing more reading - wish there was a guide like the unlocking and rooting of the US TMo guide thread.

It's very simple, and the script does most of the work. All you have to do is hit Enter a few times, and let it run.
Back up your data to be safe, and worse case scenario, there is an MSM tool available that will restore the phone to stock.

Use Google Drive backup, but you should first temporarily turn off your password/fingerprint authentication. That's the only way to ensure a complete backup is run. That's been an issue with Google device backup as a whole since 9.0 began enforcing encryption on backups.
You can turn it back on as soon as the backup completes.
One thing I've noticed already on this update is idle battery drain with 5G enabled (connected or not) has improved dramatically.
I would suggest that anyone who re-roots after makes sure to use a freshly patched kernel pulled after the update.

It can’t be a virus. Viruses would be gone by factory resets. What happens if you click on one of those weird apps? Do you see them in your app list? If so, what is their package name?
