Things to consider for LazyPanda and Post 475 - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey guys and gals I want to share some of the experiences I had when I unlocked, bricked, unbricked and finally S-Off my EVO LTE. Hopefully this will help when you want to attempt LazyPanda's S-Off. Sorry if this post is in wrong area.
First, this is my first post on the site, please be kind. I hope what I say will help some folks. Second, I love this site and love all the Dev's for what they do. Thanks for your dedication. :highfive: Third, I am no pro at this but I have been around programers and engineers and have learned from breaking things and fixing them. All I am stating here is my experience and ideas with getting my phone and a buddy's phone to be S-Off. I read as much as I could before this. Hopefully I didn't repeat anything that was already said.
Now down to what I am posting. If you aren't familiar with Post 475 I would get familiar with it because it is the best steps to prepare your computer for a chance to achieve S-Off without bricking your phone on a Windows platform. Though a couple extra things should be mentioned.
1. It is mentioned to back up your SD card and I definitely suggest doing that. But what I really want to stress, that someone else did mention on the S-Off LazyPanda thread (forgot who), is MAKE SURE THE PHONE FORMATS THE CARD BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT to use LazyPanda. I would just use a freshly blank, formatted by the phone SD card. Even if you use a back up SD card you want it to be blank and formatted by the phone before you use LazyPanda. I do want to mention I did noticed that the internal storage on the phone does not get touched but I would still back up whatever you want on it just in case yours does get erased. Can do this in recovery by mounting the internal storage instead of SD storage using TWRP. I don't think there is anything on the Play Store to back up the internal storage yet (not really sure).
2. If you can I would recommend not using LazyPanda on Windows if at all possible. I do think it would be better to use LazyPanda on Linux and not windows for a couple reasons. 1. From my understanding Android uses a similar, if not the same, shell (I believe that what it is called) on Linux. 2. I am 95% sure the creators of LazyPanda used Linux too and then just ported it over to Windows. Knowing that it would be better to use Linux to fully root your phone because of compatibility all the way around. Which could be one of the reasons people are getting bricked. (edit: I recall someone mentioning the previous sentences but do not remember who or where. He was on to something. lol) But if you don't have that option and have to use Windows to root, I would follow all the instructions on post 475 and unlimited.io down to every letter.
Just to verify what I did and used, I followed post 475 and unlimited.io (LazyPanda) instructions, when using LazyPanda on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP-1, to the "T" each time and failed each time. I installed the drivers listed on unlimited.io (HTC drivers 3.0.0.007). I installed the Android SDK Tools, Platform-tools and the Google USB driver Revision 6. No other HTC programs or drivers where installed ever on this machine. I made sure the phone can communicate with the adb utility in the bootloader and with ICS fully loaded with debug on, fast boot off, and the phone "settled". Nothing else was using any other USB port. I ended all programs I thought that would poll the USB ports (like Logitech stuff). Anti-virus was turned off for the entire time. I did not flash any ROMs, expect TWRP and SuperSU were auto flashed when I unlocked the bootloaders using regaw_leinad's method, so it was a stock ROM each attempt. I did not take the OTA so the Hboot for each phone were 1.12.0000 and the build number was 1.13.something. I ran LazyPanda in windows 3 times to get S-Off and each time it "soft" bricked my phone. But the moment I ran the Linux script it worked flawlessly. I ran LazyPanda on Linux with my buddies phone too and it work flawlessly on the first try. Of course when I had to unbrick the phone I used the only method possible. I created a dual boot when I installed Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit. Once I got it running I updated the OS and installed the 32-bit library. You can still use a live CD (USB drive) to run Linux. I wanted to install Linux so I can start getting to know the OS and all the commands in the future.
It could just be a coincidence that I got my buddies phone to work on the first try or it could be something useful to know. Hopefully this helps someone in the future. Good luck with rooting your phone and most of all keep your cool if you do brick your phone.

Great first post! Welcome to the community!

[Q]Hboot 1.58 questions...

I'm ultimately trying to run Jellybean on my phone, with maybe the option of some overclocking...
I'm seeing ALOT of guides, and they tell me that I want Hboot 1.4, S-off, and Revolutionary. Just to be clear, I have no flipping clue to what these are, all I know is that the guides I'm reading tell me I want them.
My Sprint HTC Evo 3D which I only think is CDMA, is on Android 4.0.3, with Hboot 1.58, has twrp 1.1.1 recovery flashed, and is rooted, and I do have a recovery backup from when my phone wasn't rooted.
Out of all the guides I read, I want to avoid any "wire tricks" I wanna go the Live CD way, except that I dont know if I can burn a Live CD to a dvd or not, and I don't know which guide to follow because apparently they all have different versions, and apparently this process is so picky, that I can't do it on usb 3.0.
Just want your opinion (and link) of the best, safest or easiest guide to start on.
i didnt want to do the wire trick at all either but it is soo easy to do and is easier than you think. It will take about 5 minutes max to follow a few instructions and be S-off, then install hboot 1.4 or 1.5 as either will work with the roms you find here. Most will recommend eng hboot 1.04 as a lot of devs use that, it is up to you what you want to use. Hboot install is very easy as all you do is rename the file to PG86IMG and reboot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1585846. Just follow the link and easy instructions, this phone is hard to brick so dont worry. if it was high risk then there would not be so many people with S-off this way

I don't want to, but more importantly, can't do the wire trick.
The link you gave me links to the guide that is SPECIFIC in a few key details I can't do. For one, The guide mentions to use Ubuntu 64 bit version, and specifically says USB3 ports wont work. Well my older computer with USB2 ports doesn't support 64-bit systems, and my laptop that does support 64-bit systems only has USB3 ports. I know you usually expect most computers or laptops to have 1-3 USB3 ports and the rest USB2, but mine is all USB3.
I also don't have the original HTC cable. I bought this thing off ebay.
Also the guide mentions that i need to have stock ruu, I don't even know what that is, and the guide doesn't have a download for it. I actually originally wrote that I didn't know what roms or kernals even were, or what this revolutionary or s-off even is. I edited that out of my 1st post because i thought i should just leave the basics.
I guess the unfortunate thing about rooting, unlocking, and flashing android devices is that all the guides have different things... I never had to do all this junk with these ruu's, s-offs, hboots, revolutionaries, linuxes, wire tricks, and so-on with a GT1, Lenovo Thinkpad, or Nexus 7.
Everytime I get a new android device, it's like I have to relearn a totally new process. completely different from what I knew.
Different devices use different security features and require different ways around the blocks and every time a new version of android more exploits are patched and new ones need to be found. It's a constant battle between the manufacturer and the enthusiasts. That said I'm s-off hboot 1.4 and I never did any wire tricks.. I did have to brick my device though... In a specific way
Sent from my Evo V 4G using Tapatalk 2
I used htcdev.com to unlock and j-bear to soff, which I did on my win7 pc. I used a wire cable from an ethernet cable to do the wire trick when the program told me to. I'll double check the link.

Your "Win7 pc" according to that guide, was an Ubuntu PC when you tried to downgrade your Hboot. Because you were booting from the CD and not your harddrive, Windows 7 played no factor in the process. What did matter was your processor. Even if you're using a processor that supports 64 bit systems, then your Windows 7 could be 64-bit or 32-bit. But if your processor supports 32-bit only, then you can only properly run windows 7 32 bit version.
The guide strictly called for Ubuntu 64-bit. Despite what version of Windows 7 you're running, I'm going to take a shot in the dark here and say that your computer you used didn't have an outdated AMD processor from 2005. Even if the computer was sold in 2005, it can run even Windows 8, as long as it's 32 bit.
My understanding of computers and the guide is my old computer's technology can't support a 64-bit system, and my new computer's technology doesn't have old usb technology.
I'll shut my mouth and do the guide if your processor supports 32 bit systems only, or if someone can tell me using a USB 2.0 HUB on a USB 3.0 port will retard my usb3 port to usb2 standards.

[Q] Most Basic Root

Sorry to ask such a noob question, but I am having trouble sifting through al my options here. I have rooted a couple phones, early d-incs, and a nook, I am just looking for the most basic root operation for dinc 4glte so that I can access the hotspot feature. I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction. also I was about to start going through the dirtyRacun s-off but was scared off by the warning about revoking support for windows. I have a linux notebook, is it better to use that OS for rooting, in general? thanks.

The reason for yanking windows support was due to the flaky nature of the windows drivers, depending on windows version for this phone. Originally, unlimited.io supported Windows XP only, but people kept trying it on Windows 7, or Windows 8, etc. My guess is they got fed up with people ignoring the simple instruction of using Windows XP.
If you're comfortable with Linux, you'll be fine with DirtyRacun. Its quite painless and does not require giving HTC your serial number (buried in the token) to unlock the bootloader. However, make sure you're still on the "proper" software build version (2.17.605.2 or earlier). No telling what will happen if you're on the latest OTA...

[Q] Root Rezound Without SD Card?

Hello! Ok, this may sound stupid, but here goes.
I am trying to flash custom ROMs on my Rezound (bootloader unlocked) but I don't have an SD card for it (can't root or use any write ups for flashing a ROM).
This is my old phone (I currently used a Razr Maxx hd which is rooted and unlocked) - BUT I wanted to try flashing ROMs on my Rezound first so I don't mess it up on my current phone. Pretty much I want to use my Rezound to learn the process and if I mess it up, I will still have my current phone.
Any way! Can someone please give me a little bit of guidance on this? Do I even need to root in order to flash ROMs (I read that I can use ADB to flash ROMs instead of the SD card, but do I need root ?) If I do need root, how do I do this without an SD card? I'm cheap and don't want to buy one & I can't find the original SD that used to be in the phone.
Also, after I root/if I don't have to root, what are some guidelines on using ADB instead of SD card to flash ROMs?
I'm just terrified of flashing a ROM on my Maxx hd without first trying it on the Rezound since I can mess up without losing my daily-used cell phone!
And YES I am a NOOB!
I appreciate any advice! Thank you!

Rooting should be easy enough, just put the SuperSUxxx.zip file on the internal storage, start TWRP/CWM and flash it.
As far as ROMing goes... pony up a few bucks and buy an SD card, you can get a 16GB card for around $10, or even less, shipped, from Amazon or Newegg. One of the main steps in flashing new ROMs for the Rezound is wiping the internal storage so a SD card of some kind is highly recommended.
I am not aware of away to flash roms via ADB/Fastboot only on the Rezound.
There are fastboot commands for flashing ROMs and kernels directly from a computer too.
He could actually go with one of the all-in-one toolkits if he has a Windows PC, just have to point and click to do commands then after setting up files inside appropriate folders: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2437371
Granted that makes learning commands for the other device a two step process, this baby step to see where and when the phone reacts to commands, plus ROM configuration afterwards. Take some of the anxiety away. Then try taking a look at the command scripts ran by the program directly and follow up with more online reference on commands. If lucky the other device forum may have a toolkit with automated scripts as well.
Thank you guys!! I will grab an SD for it and start playing around! It doesn't seem as hard as I'd imagined to do this stuff since there's SO MANY write ups and simplified explanations for most of it! Thanks again! But by the way I am a she! And I do have windows but I think it'd be easiest and more similar to my RAZR if I got an SD card for the rezound.
Here goes nothing!
External SD card has many benefits for the rezound. First one; s-off. Pretty sure you will need one to complete it. Second one; s-on ph98img flashing, the newer 2.28 hboot I am pretty sure removed the remote "fastboot boot" command.

"fastboot boot" works fine in 2.28 Hboot, but only if you are unlocked (It doesn't seem to care if s-on or s-off).

Shouldnt have to unlock an s-off phone though. Patched hboots also allow zimage flashing. Wish i knew the procdedure to patch the latest for s-off users.

[GUIDE] S-Off, TWRP Recovery and SU on the HTC Droid DNA

I recently got a HTC Droid DNA on Verizon and it's been stressful getting to the point where I can install custom ROMs from stock. More so than on any of the previous HTC devices I've owned. I've had to glean information from different sources very carefully to achieve this since the majority of the guides out there are outdated, misleading and even brick-bait. This guide is meant to help the recent converts to the Droid DNA go through this process smoothly and safely.
If you follow instructions TO THE LETTER and CAREFULLY and meet ALL the prerequisites for every resource on this post you should have not problems.
Credit goes to the owners and developers of all the resources following most notably beaups, fuses, WindyCityRockr and jcase. These guys have made our device much more powerful and fun to use. None of it is mine. I am neither a dev nor a coder. I just know how to type in basic, decent English
As usual, following this guide is voluntary. You are responsible for your bricked device. Turn on your brain before your proceed. Your warranty will be voided. I suggest you read through the ENTIRE guide and follow the links to all the resources listed before you actually attempt this. If at any point in any of the guides you realize you do not have or have not downloaded any of the resources listed, make sure your get EVERYTHING you need before you proceed. Your best bet is to have a working connection on both your device and computer while you do this. You will need ADB setup and running properly. Pay close attention and note when you have to change a file name and WHERE you need to put the file on your computer before every step.
If that scared you, read no further. Thank you for stopping by.
If any of that excited you, welcome. Proceed.
1. Make sure you actually own a HTC Droid DNA from Verizon Wireless. Not a clone or a lookalike or a butterfly. Make sure ADB is intalled and setup properly on your computer.
2. Start by following (STEP BY STEP AND OMITTING NOTHING. NOTE THE PREREQUISITES) Beaups guide to achieving S-Off using firewater here http://firewater-soff.com/ I followed the guide to gain temproot FIRST and after that followed the steps that apply to a rooted device. I'm not sure it says this in the guide but make sure you copy the temproot and firewater files to your ADB folder immediately after you download them. This guide allows you unlock your bootloader WITHOUT HTC Dev
3. Follow Phaded's guide to installing a custom recovery from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2318159
You can get TWRP's latest recovery image here http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/dlx Once again, omit nothing. Meet all the requirement before you do a single thing. Download every file and check the MD5 before your proceed. I renamed the TWRP recovery image to "recovery.img" since that is easier to type in a command line and copied the image file to the ADB folder on my computer.
If you have followed every instruction to the letter, you should have S-Off, an unlocked bootloader, root, custom revocery and SU.
4. If you like, you can download the WinDroid Universal HTC Toolkit, select your phone type, wait for it to download the appropriate binaries, confirm that it recognizes your device in ADB and fastboot modes and you can use it to perform various operations including update your recovery, issue ADB and fastboot commands and flash a new ROM. You can find that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2437614
5. Find a ROM of your choice and flash to your heart's content :victory:
Congratulations.
Once again, I take no credit. All I wanted to do was consolidate information that was scattered in different sources to make this easier. Hope this helps someone out there.
I'm pretty sure I've seen this method a few days ago but you made it a bit easier for me (because spanish is my main language).
I can't wait to get my droid dna. This will be my first htc device so I'm going try this method. Thanks a lot!

Firewater takes care of that.
I share your frustrations. I'm going through that now, because only now have i decided to root my phone after almost 2 years of having the phone.
I must ask, would these instructions work with the latest OTA?
Yes, they should. Make sure you use the latest version of Firewater though. Once Firewater does it's thing, you're basically home free.
I can't get firewater to run on my insurance replacement. I tried all the methods on firewater's page.
After running the last command it doesn't bring up any prompt like step 5 says

I had the same issue on Windows. I tried numerous Windows machines and had the same issue as you. But once I got home and plugged into my linux box, I was s-off and unlocked within minutes. Try a Linux system instead of Windows. And make sure you are S-ON or firewater will not do anything.

[guide] htc desire 601 downgrade from kitkat to jelly bean root and s-off included

The King’s Ultimate Downgrade Fraken-guide for HTC Desire 601
(And to be more specific the HTC 601 Virgin Mobile ZARA CL)YES YOU FINALLY FOUND WHAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR OH GOOGLER LOST AT SEA“My battery is dieing” –an HTC DESIRE user who updated
[Insert disclaimer here, I’m not responsible for basically messing up your phone]
Hello stranger and welcome to what I like to call the King’s Ultimate Downgra—just look at the title. Okay so you’ve been stuck with the crappy update for the HTC Desire 601, you know the one that Virgin Mobile and HTC got our hopes up last year when we found out we were getting the 4.4.2 KitKat update. Then you found out that it’s a POS and drain’s your battery faster than you can say CHARGER PLEASE! I’m going to cut to the chase here, you don’t have much time, I understand. I can tell you right now this will probably take 2 hours at the most. OKAY FIRST
FIRST
Do you know what ZARA CL means!? Alright if you do next step if not, you better power off your phone and do the old Volume down and power on method. Also abandon this guide if you are ZARA UL but I will say the info in it can come in handy for you all. Make sure you have the Fast Boot setting turned off in the power options. Okay right there on the white Bootloader (Yes that is the bootloader) screen it should tell you at the top what you have. Cool right? Okay you’re learning, all you need to know is what you have. If you want to know more google it sometime I don’t care.
SECOND
You need to know how to use a command prompt, terminal, whatever you want to call it. Mainly you’ll want to know your change directory command aka cd.
THIRD
You will lose all your data. Your SD card contents should be fine but you will want to look up a backup guide if you don’t want to lose anything. Speaking of you may want to get yourself and SD card reader or some other method to plug your SD card into a computer.
FOURTH
Have the HTC drivers installed to your computer for this device. You can find them on their website but you’ll have to deal with some stupid HTC sync program which if it annoys you like it did me just uninstall it but leave the drivers
LAST
Don’t be discouraged. You’re going to learn a lot and be able to help other people once you figure this all out. I’ll be updating this guide so ask questions and I will determine if it’s necessary to add to it. I’m assuming you know a little about computers so this isn’t a complete newb guide. All right let’s GET IT ON!
Files you will need.

These will also be posted throughout the guide so if you find yourself getting ready to download a duplicate just use the one you already have. Also I do not take any credit for these files, I'm just hosting some of them so they don't disappear.
Step 1 Unlock the damn bootloader
This part was fun for me, the HTC website isn’t exactly clear on what’s going on but basically you need to go register an account with them and get this crap sorted out. So go here https://www.htcdev.com/ and once you get in there register and everything, then go to the Unlock bootloader it’ll kind of sort of walk you through it all but when you get to that [-------Select Your Device------- ▼] just pick the “All Other Supported Models” Then follow the guide. At Step 4 it’ll give you a fastboot binary. WHAT THE F*** IS A FASTBOOT!? Okay it’s just a program that you will use to interact with your phone and boy is it handy. You’ll be using this multiple times. Remember the command line stuff? Time to apply some knowledge. You’ll need to be in the same directory as your saved fastboot, and once you get there you should be able to use your commands. It’ll give you the one’s you need. Once you get through all that then go onto step 2 if you are having trouble by all means there are guides upon guides out there for this step.
Step 2 Flash the damn recovery
First download this I’ll tell you what to do with it in Step 3. You should be downloading the STOCK ODEX ROOT file https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B6WBFlAKqe30a2ktU3ZEaUUzSTg&tid=0B6WBFlAKqe30TjRLa2Qxa0toYlU
This part is where things will feel scary to you, but don’t fret! You already unlocked your phone so let’s go all the way. Go here https://twrp.me/devices/htcdesire601cdma.html You will need to go to the Download Links and get you a fresh version of TWRP recovery (take the one on top). What is it? You’ll see once you get there, just make sure to put that .img file in the same directory as fastboot. Did you leave that command line open? Good! If not go back to the directory on the command line where you now have fastboot and twrp-2.8.6.0-zaracl.img. Remember how HTC told you to go to that fastboot menu in the Bootloader on your phone? Do it. Have it plugged into your computer too.
Okay now you’ll type this magic spell into the Command Prompt.
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.6.0-zaracl.img
It should take but 10 seconds if that and your recovery will be flashed! Woo, aren’t we having fun?
Now comes the real scary part.
Step 3 Install the wrong damn ROM for your phone but benefit from it in the end
So remember in Step 2 that thing you downloaded? You need to get that on the root of your SD card, I don’t care how you do it just get it on there.
Next you’ll want to install this to your phone and you’ll do that by getting back to the bootloader screen on your phone and loading the recovery. All you have to do is select recovery and it will do it’s thing. When you get into the recovery go right for the install and navigate to the STOCK_ODEX_ROOT_HTC_ZARA_UL_601_2.14.1401.86_v.1.0.1.zip file. Click install and it should do it’s thing, while it does that let’s go onto step 4.
Step 4 Use the damn creepy rumrunner application
So once your phone installs the rom you’ll want to restart your phone and boot into your newly rooted rom! YAY CONFETTI it’s the wrong rom. But you have root and this will allow you to get what’s called S-Off which is good if you need to flash your firmware. I’m not going to walk you through this one, just go to this already made guide and it will help you immensely. http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-601/general/guide-tips-achieving-s-off-rumrunner-t2827793 Good luck stranger.
Step 5 Flash the damn firmware
Thanks http://forum.xda-developers.com/desire-601/help/kitkat-downgrade-to-jelly-bean-t2854899 for all the info. Thank you Yoshi, Chuckie I don’t even know what to say to you. YOU STRANGER DON’T TOUCH THOSE FILES ON THERE
If you made it through rumrunner congratulations! Here download this if you already haven’t https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1IfdFmI1wlvOVFpVzJNVmhUSEk/edit?usp=docslist_api
This step is pretty mystical but I got this firmware from a stock rom somewhere down the road. Now for some reason my phone absolutely hated this file and would reject me placing it on the SD card which is why I mentioned getting an SD card reader of some sort. Basically you’ll want to rename that file 0P4EIMG.zip, and put it on the root of your SD card. Then reboot your phone into the bootloader, you’ll be prompted soon after that to install the file. Hit yes and let it do it’s thing. After you power down the phone take the SD card and remove the 0P43IMG.zip file from it. You won’t be needing it anymore.
Step 6 Gotta get back to JB run the damn RUU
So if you went by the downloads you should have this https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1IfdFmI1wlvVEdvYndVVkNDODQ/view?usp=sharing
This you will run on your computer but first you need to put your phone in fastboot mode again like you did when you unlocked it and when you flashed the recovery. After that run it and walk through the steps. This will take a while, it will take a long @$$ time to update the radio, just be patient.
Step 7 Almost there, just gotta flash the damn recovery again!
You know how to flash recoveries so flash https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxPNhWHyBhRQZXZjbkVreG9zSW8/view?usp=sharing
You’ll have to extract it first to get the .img file but once you have it you’re golden.
Step 8 lock the damn bootloader
For some reason you cannot boot the device now into Android without it hanging on the Virgin Mobile screen so what you need is to lock the bootloader. Easy peasy.
Go to your bootloader and go to fastboot. On your computer go to your command prompt where it should still be in the directory where you put fastboot and type.
Code:
fastboot oem lock
Done! Reboot your phone and you should have Jelly Bean!
Step 8special ROOT
You can download this https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1IfdFmI1wlvaDF0ZFBPNUUwNDA/view?usp=sharing and use Philz-Touch recovery to install this zip through the install option. This will root your phone.
YOU NOW HAVE AN S-OFF, ROOTED HTC DESIRE 601 ZARA CL VIRGIN MOBILE PHONE WITH ANDROID 4.2.2
