Issue with CM9/AOKP messaging (AT&T....maybe it exists on others?) - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

So I have a slight issue with CM9 and the MMS.apk (it also exists in AOKP.) When I send a text that spans multiple texts, it splits them up. So if I send a message that is more than 160 characters, it will automatically split them into 2. I checked the settings and the option to split texts is turned off.
For those more technically minded, the term is called Concatenated SMS. Not sure if we just have to wait for it to be updated and fixed or if it's something else going on there. Granted, if someone can check if this issue exists on the International version, that would be great.

I believe there is a setting in the sms app itself that allows you to convert long text messages into mms so they won't split.

Right, but I shouldn't have to convert it to MMS for that. The true Stock software (that Samsung comes with) doesn't have this issue. Nor does any other phone, it splits it and rejoins it, but behind the scenes. MMS also drains more power since it has to initiate a data connection whereas SMS sends with the typical tower checkins.

It doesn't, I prefer closer to AOSP/AOKP, when I meantion "True" stock I mean Samsung Stock. Samsung Stock Messaging does support Concatenated SMS whereas AOSP/AOKP do not right now.

Dude, it's actually a smart thing for it to do that. I used to send msgs to my friends phone and they had to be partitioned BC he was using an archaic phone. I'm glad it does this. You should be thanking them. What's it hurting anyways?

They are partitioned when they send. The difference is on phones that support rejoining the text they get rejoined. It's a visual issue plus the texts send out split 2-3 seconds apart. If I force it to MMS it hurts my battery since data uses more power than SMS.

As far as I know no one has really asked this question before. I don't think there is a fix for the 3 page convert to MMS "problem." Is there a legitimate reason why you'd prefer 4+ pages of sms over 1 MMS message?

Yes all "stock sms apps" when creating sms & it exceeds 3pages it will convert it into mms (most peopleget charged for sending mms)
Darky Rom had a fix/tweak which allowed longer sms text without it being converted to mms..
I am after that tweak/fix !!!
PLEASE HELP
In my country, lot of people use stupid phone, and they can not receive MMS . I usually sent a long SMS because of my job. I am now use handcent SMS but I prefer the stock more .

Just use BigSMS, Go SMS Pro or Handcent SMS. All of those are free. Stock messaging app on some phones doesn't have a feature that you need.

very simple fix change your mms the one i use under setting you put a check where it says split sms so when you type a long txt it convert it and it gets to the other person in 2 or 3 txt.
copy it to your sd-card use root explorer or which ever one you use or sdk move it to system/app then click on permissions make the correct settings reboot the phone once rebooted find it click on it then setting and you will see where it says split sms. i uploaded a copy if needed.
Am I missing something here?
I've actually never heard of it being converted over to MMS.
My phone will send an 8 page message as SMSs..
And I get them counted as 8 SMSs on the bill..

well let me try usually sms has a split of 160 character so when you go over the 160 it treats it as a mms character but it gets sent as a txt but in 2 parts or depending how long the txt is
It differs user to user (and service provider restrictions)..stock app for some will convert SMS into MMS after character limit is reached..
Only some users will have stock messaging app settings as unlimited characters..
(use Handcent messaging app or better still custom roms)

Not sure if this helps but I had similar problem way back when I was running NonSense ROM the fix is you have to flash HTCMessageProvider.apk.

Messaging BIG Problem (Ridiculous)

Hi, This is my first post and i need help, I was texting with my new phone (SGS3) in the stock messaging app, and i wrote an SMS (4 Pages) and suddenly the SMS was automatically converted to MMS, and there is no option to disable this horrible and ridiculous feature, and theres also no option to turn it off! So how can this be possible? Such an expenssive phone, and you cant even write freely an SMS??? Why is there a limit of 3 pages? I was wondering if someone could do a MOD to fix this! I had the same problem with the galaxy note, and there was a little mod that could fix that, so i think im not the only one that want this fixed! (i dont like custom ROMS or anything like that, and i dont like apps like GoSMS, or stuff like that, i just like the stock messaging app, but with the fix) i just want PLEASE a little mod to fix this BIG problem. (Sorry for my english)
Sms are limited to 160 characters. Otherwise it has to be sent as an Mms.

Thats not what i asked for, i mean.. im coming from an iphone 4s and that never happened, in fact it never happened to me in all the phones i have had!! So, i dont see the point of converting an SMS automatically to MMS just because i write more than 3 pages, thats just ridiculous But the thing is, that i would like to know if someone could do a MOD for the stock messaging app to fix that and make it without characters restrictions! To explain it better this is what i want for my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371755
no one texts anymore, use whatsapp or some sort of instant messaging

i'm pretty sure that's not how it works, SMS longer than 160 characters get sent as multiple SMS which then then recombined back into one sms on the recipients phone. I've had the issue before when one part of a multi SMS message was delayed causing me to have the first or second half only and when the other one arrived sometime later the phone still knew to combined them together.
MMS is only when you attach a picture, video or voice clip to the message.
I have just tested what the OP has said and its true, if you type a long SMS, after the 3rd set of 260 characters, (there is a counter just above the send icon) it then gets converted to a MMS
But to the OP, I do wonder why you would want to type such a long SMS on a regular basis? you can also just send the sms at 3 pages then send a new one.
Can't you just send after every two pages. Yeah, it cost more but it will solve your issue.

Sms are limited to 160 characters (Per Page), And when you write more than 3 Pages, it will automatically convert your SMS to MMS without asking or option to disable, it will just convert it to MMS. (it will convert it even if you dont attach ANYTHING, Even if it just based on text)
Use Go sms... But this is stupid...
S3 shouldn't do that...

Wow I just realised that there is no option to cancel this 'feature' after I read your thread.
I do hope this is resolved since for those on Payandgo networks, like me, MMS isn't always free whereas practically even mobile plan has free SMS. Defeats the objective here, you can send very long SMS texts (counts as more than 1 but still sends fine) from other phones no problem. On the galaxy nexus it was possible to disable this SMStoMMS converting problem easily, I hope the devs come up with a workaround..

Who still has data rates for SMS and MMS? I thought this stuff was free now? In Australia SMS for free is pretty much standard and most plans have at least $500 of credit included, an MMS costs max 0.50c, is this seriously an issue? Just use a different messegeing ap or use an instant messenger.

Guys, am I right in saying that this was always a problem with stock messaging app? Hence most custom ROMs have a modded 'No MMS convert' message app? I remember this limitation on my stock SGS2 back in the day - dont remember this ever happening to me after custom roms.... or maybe I never sent over 3 pages.......
I just tried Texting over 311 characters from my SGS2 to my SGS3 and them back..........No MMS converting.... One whole page too....
Therefore this is not a problem with custom ROMs...

Convert long SMS to MMS

Hi everybody:
I'll start with the tl;dr - CM9 & 10 aren't handling long SMS's the way I am wanting them to; stock is.
Long version:
I've found something strange with trying to upgrade to CM9/10 to deal with long SMS's, and I'm wondering if it's just me, it's something that has been overlooked, or it just is what it is.
I only really text with one person: my wife.
With the stock Samsung ROM, I have no problems whatsoever: short messages, long message, images, whatever....it's all good. I can use Go SMS or Handcent, and both work exactly the same (how I know this: my wife doesn't complain about my messages.)
When I tried installing CM9 (and 10...though I had different things happen in both versions), I have some issues. Short SMS work fine. Long SMS...not so much. In the stock SMS app, it splits the SMS up into different messages (1/2, 2/2...). Personally, I don't have a problem with this, but the wife...not so much. She likes the messages to be all in one, without it being split up. So, to promote marital harmony, I tried both Go SMS and Handcent here. Handcent seems to do the same as stock: splits the message. Go SMS...it reports delivery failure, but only the first part of the message gets sent out. (In CM10, stock still did split messages, and one of the other two did as well, while the other did not send at all. I don't remember which was which, though...)
I know most people prefer the split SMS rather than the conversion to MMS...but, to promote marital harmony, I need that conversion. It works fine in stock, no matter which program. It doesn't work at all in CM9/10, no matter which program.
Any ideas?
SMS = short message service and by network rules is limited to 160 characters, so anything more will be split. Sms is send through GPRS like voice.
MMS = multimedia message service and is sent through your cellular data connection, so it doesn't have a length rule, but pictures ,music, and videos are limited in size.
There probably isn't a crossover option, as they are different for different purposes.
Does CM have the option in the message settings menu to control message splitting ?
It used to anyway....g
In the past att didn't spit long message when testing another att person. They still don't. All the JB roms don't have what ever it takes to sent long text. To make this short, no matter what you do right now, you can't send long text as far as I know. There is an app on the market called long text, I think. Have not tried it though.

MMS compression issues

I have been scouring the internet and various forums for an answer to this issue. I have been having some serious MMS compression on all of the AOSP ROMs I have used, namely Orca, LiquidSmooth and Carbon. This stands for any SMS app I use as well, even GO SMS where you can disable MMS compression and such. Is this a common issue, or is there perhaps something up with my phone and/or data connection? Any help on the subject would be appreciated, as sending screenshots make them illegible and pictures just look really pixelated and bad, it's quite annoying. Thanks in advance!
In go sms... Did you do into mms settings and check preserve image resolution? My images were horrible as well until I changed that. If it is not checked, go sms will resize it automatically.

Yeah, I have that checked, it still makes the images all blurry and grainy. I'm not sure what the issue is here. I may flash it back to stock and see if the problem persists there. I was just thinking maybe there is an issue with the AOSP SMS apps on the Note 2 or something, but no one seems to be having any issues with this as far as I can tell, as I haven't really been getting feedback. It may just be an isolated issue with me.
only other setting i can think of is in MMS setting (go sms)...changing the Maximum MMS size. i have mine set to 1.2M and can send screen shots with no issue.

Yeah, I've tried that already as well. I even changed it to the largest size possible in the Go SMS settings. Not sure what the problem is.
Edit: I do notice you are using Jelly Beans ROM. Are you using the AOSP SMS app as stock or the TW SMS app? Because as I stated before, I think it may be related to the AOSP SMS app on the Note 2 for some odd reason. I realize you are using GO as your SMS app, but what do you have installed as stock?
VZW will resize the image on the network side. You could send a 10MP image, but it would still arrive tiny on the other end. Don't think there is really anything you can do about it either.

Well I never had compression issues like this with my GNex at all. I'm at a loss ha ha.
Well, Messaging will compress the image to adhere to VZW's network side restrictions. You could change it so that messaging sends the full image, the AFAIK, the recipient still gets a crappy small image if it is oversized.

[Q] How to send full sized MMS on Sprint?

I would like to know how to send a full sized MMS on sprint's network. Even if I install a rom that can send up to 5M, I notice the receiver always gets something along the lines of 200kb. I have tried both GoSMS and Handcent to send pictures, and neither work even when put at full size in options. So far the only way I've acheived this is to use Handcent's personal network, upload the picture there, then send someone the link to which they download from. Now this is rather inconvenient, as some of my friends don't have smartphones yet, so it's hard for them to view the file. I''d also prefer to not email pictures, as it's just very slow and difficult. Can anyone explain how to fix this? Thank you
I guess nobody knows...
Try this work around I posted elsewhere and it's helped a few people......
Add a random pic to the message (it will probably be a small file like you say), then add the picture you actually want to send (should be way bigger according to message size number, ie: goes from 200kb to 1375kb etc). Now long press on the first pic and remove it.....you SHOULD be left with the second pic and the size should be the original size of the pic 1375-200=1175kb.
Let me know if that works.
