I have a Sprint S3. I rooted it when I got it, but unrooted when I heard about possible problems with NFC and rooted phones. At the time there was no way to reset the counter. Now triangle away works with this phone so I want to reset the counter, still don't need to be rooted but I don't want lose my data. It took a long time to get everything the way wanted it. What's the fastest way to root, reset counter, unroot without losing any data?

10 chars, no.
I assume this is the best way to root S2?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056334
And no data will be lost from my phone during this process?
If you thought that rooting could wipe all data then I really really strongly urge you not to root.
Rootng isn't for everyone (certainly not for me... yet).
If you really have your heart set on rooting, please wait for it to be easier and with less risk.
My first Android was the DHD, and I rooted it pretty much the same week I got it, back when it was hard and complicated and took many steps.
I didn't even know *why* to root. Then I got mixed up in flashing and radios and this and that and CID and now I'm kinda glad someone stole it.
Please rethink why you want to root, and what you will gain from it, and assess that against the risks. At least wait until there is an app on the market that does it simply safely and quickly.
Haven't found this. Is rooting this device reversible in such a way as ATT cannot tell you ever rooted it and warranty/insurance would cover it if something comes up with the phone?
Rooting is reversible. You can use Odin and return the phone back to stock.

I tripped the flash counter on my ATT SGS2 and it even had the big triangle with exclamation point come up on boot after the counter was triggered. I had a problem with calls dropping and they could not determine the cause and I was able to swap it out for a new one in store even with a custom rom and the counter tripped. The guy at the ATT store didnt even pay attention when it booted up with the big triangle on the screen. I don't know if this guy just missed this or if ATT just doesnt care all together.
I think if you are really worried about your warranty then I would wait until a solution comes around to either reset the counter or root without tripping it in the first place just to be safe. Because when I got my replacement SGS2 they had already come up with another method that did not trip the flash counter.

I know that much, but can they tell you ever flashed Odin in the first place?
Unfortunately atm rooting will trigger your flash counter and there is no way of resetting it, if im not mistaken.

This is true but the flash counter will not be reset.

that's what I was looking for. Thanks!
Picking up this bad boy today. I wanted to root it first thing for no ads and to use mybackuproot to restore all my apps from my old HD2, but I guess I'll wait. If I get a bad screen or something I don't want them to say "well you tripped the flash counter, so we can't do **** for you"
if its a hardware problem they still have to replace it weather you rooted it or not. bad hardware is bad hardware. i have had people atleast on sprint return devices that had custom roms for what ever reason and as long as its a true hardware issue it would play no difference on the return

are you sure about that, I thought rooting violates all warranty claims.
depends on how you root. rooting a phone wont do much of anything. messing with your kernel will. kernel is what gets you in trouble most of the time.

I mean the carrier can say "no" to everything even if obviously the root didn't cause the problem because technically rooting voids the warranty. I've known Sprint to do this.
I'm not talking about what they "should" do or if rooting does anything bad, I'm talking about what ATT ACTUALLY does in these cases.
Buy a USB download jig. It resets your flash counter back to 0.

well if you root without changing your counter. just delete the su app using command line and your good none the wiser on there part.

Read the forums. People have already tested and said multiple times that the jigs don't work on the Note due to a new bootloader.
I'm just curious as I'm new to this.
Not being a negative thinker here, but is there a chance that there will NEVER be a method that will reset the counters back to 0? Jig or what other methods can be used?
I love the Note and I was really excited on all this rooting stuff until I found out about this one. I have bad luck with gadgets as they fail on me most of the time even before the contract is up. It would be a pain that if it happens, Samsung will deny me the warranty because of that after paying $299.
Or could this "New Bootloader" be the new "Locked bootloader" (Like the Atrix when it was lauched?)
Thanks

It's not a locked bootloader because it's already been rooted. But it is a new bootloader that apparently really wants to count flashes.

Yes I have read the forums.
It does work on the new bootloader (been tested and done on 2.3.6). For reference see this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1354888
However on the AT&T version it has not been tested yet. Only on the Int'l version. I would wait for confirmation to see if and when the AT&T version has been tested.
Another way to do it, once ICS 4.0 comes on this phone, is to use Chainfire's app called TriangleAway (have to be rooted) and you can reset the counter back to 0 as well. Someone did it on their Int'l Note by flashing the ICS 4.0 leak and then using TriangleAway. Then using Odin to put on another ROM.8
So basically the questions are
1) can you flash something which does not trip the counter which can be fully restored to stock that roots your phone?
2) Is there a way to bring the trip counter back to zero?

International bootloader =/= AT&T Bootloader. The different SoC's and build dates along with other factors mean that we can't use the jig method right now. There is no downgrade bootloader for use to use, even. We're stuck.
So I am thinking about exchanging my phone (would have to do it through samsung, because the place i bought it the time limit expired) because the pictures are horrible, I really think there is something wrong with the phone.
My question is, I am rooted, and have flashed a few roms. Can I just odin back to stock? Or is there some kind of flash counter that needs to be reset?
Thanks
Yes you can just flash back to stock but as far as resetting the counter ...I don't think there's a way yet.

This is the guide I used. It has all the files you need. http://galaxys3root.com/galaxy-s3-unroot/how-to-unroot-t-mobile-galaxy-s3-sgh-t999/
Depending on the method you used to root, your counter will most likely be non-Zero. Since triangle reset does not yet support the T999, your out of luck. If you bought the phone in a non Tmobile store, they normally don't check the boot loader. So your best bet is to restore stock, then do a factory reset and leave the phone on for the return, so they don't think you have messed with it. I returned mine for an exchange to a Walmart and they didn't check the boot loader. YMMV.

Don't worry about the counter thing... I have returned 2 android phones that were heavily modded and nothing ever happened. I did a warranty exchange with my T- mobile SGS2 about 6 months ago. I just made sure to flash it back to stock and get rid of any evidence that would make someone think I modded. Do you really think that Samsung checks every phone they get back for warranty replacement? Do you have any idea how many phones they get returned? I don't know, but I'm sure it's a butt-load! Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. FYI. This has been my experience. I cannot guarantee the same for others.

Hi all,
I couldn't find anything on Sprint/Asurion insurance that makes me comfortable tripping Knox. I'm clumsy and poor and need to be able to have the phone fixed for free. That being said, street much reading, I think my best course of action is:
- Factory reset
- I'm on OC5, so flash NH7 using Odin
- Factory reset
- Use towelroot
- Hope that Knox won't trip
- Enjoy TiBu and other root benefits
- In a year when I can afford paying the remainder due on this phone to get a new phone using Easy Pay, stop caring about Knox and install a custom recovery and all the ROMs
Is this technically/theoretically possible? Am I missing anything?
I heard towelroot steals IMEI and other personally identifying info. I also see that it requires "phone number and identity" when installing the apk. Is this necessary as part of the exploit to gain root? Does XDA endorse towelroot or support it as legitimate?
Thank you in advance!
Sprint doesn't really care about Knox, Samsung does.
Tripping it does not affect functionality of the phone and if anything, only inhibits your experience with the phone.
I tripped it an hour after I bought the phone and haven't looked back since. I also cracked my screen and had to make insurance claim...Sprint didn't say a word about it being tripped.

I saw that poll. Helped me decide that if my Knox is tripped during a root method that ISN'T supposed to trip I wouldn't cry over it. Still, I read that tripping Knox will prevent Knox app functionality and my company may use it, so I don't want that to be a problem either.
I'm still looking for verification that towelroot won't steal my phone info.

Where do you "hear" these rumours? Links? First you said cf auto root was bad cause you read that somewhere, no link and now this. Knox doesn't matter at all if you're clumsy. One has nothing to do with the other. You break or lose your phone insurance isn't going to ask if you tripped Knox. If you download any apps at all then you should be reading what they have access to when installing. Lots of legit apps access your phone information. Pretty sure Knox is one of them. Fyi I'm on easy pay now and I'm not a millionaire and I don't care that I tripped Knox. Root and start living life to the fullest lol.
Dear all,
Hope you're all fine. It's been a long time I did not come back here... as it's been a long time I did not play with any of the recent mobiles I got
I am coming to you for an advice. As a matter of fact, I got my brand new Galaxy S9+ stolen in Paris two weeks ago (mugging).
It's the 1st time I live this and it is quite traumatic, not saying that you also feel stupid.
My son was also stolen his Galaxy Note 8 (pickpocket).
Therefore, I am now looking for a solution (tracker type) that would allow me to always know where my mobile is, even if a hard reset is done.
Do you if this type of solution exists please ?
I specify that I do not wish to root the mobile.
Thanks for your help.
Best regards,
Nothing that will survive a hard reset without root, as that would require modifying the /system partition. Even still, someone could still easily disable that by flashing an image using Odin.
Your closest option would be something like Cerberus.

Assuming that your phone is still in the country where it was stolen, the national police can track your phone by its imei number, however it's a long process that is not applicable for everyone. Oh anf even if you don't have the imei number they can obtain it from your operator.
