Down sizing is upgrading for telephony - HTC Rezound

My new program.
Rezy goes into infinite rebooting loop. Verizon over night's replacement Rezy. I activate my pristine Dinc AMOLD. My new Rezy ships.
Here's the new program. Dinc is my new phone. Rezy is my wifi tablet.
Bottom line is Dinc kicks Rezy's butt as a phone. Rezy kicks Dinc's butt as a HD, dual core gaming and multi media beast.
ymmv.

And we needed a new thread for this because why?

You're right. It's not important.
But it's true.

I would've posted in the off topic thread or something. I read somewhere that activating a 3g device permanently disables your sim card is that true?

The Verizon gal said that I'd need a new sim card so when they shipped me the new Rezy I should bring both phones to Verizon so they could setup my new Rezy and make sure I packaged the old one correctly to ship back. I shined hitting Verizon and enabled my new Rezy minus hooking up to the Verizon four gee network. I'll pass on that for now.
I was stunned by how good of a 'phone' the Dinc was compared to my Rezy. Battery life is unreal with the Dinc as compared to my Rezy that I've had for over six months. And it's so light and thin...fantastic phone and almost the perfect form factor for me.
So I'm betting that if I decide to switch back to the Rezy for telephony I will need to go to the Verizon store so they can swap out my four gee card with a new one. But based on how well my old Dinc is working as a phone, and how well my Rezy is working as a wifi only tablet, I doubt I'll need a four gee card anytime soon.
IMO, four gee is not worth the battery life sucking drain as compared with three gee's battery life/bandwidth ratio.
But that's just me...

Have you seen puremotives battery life mod for the incredible? My sister watched 2 three hour movies before it died with that mod. I can literally get a week airplane mode standby and 4 hours of screen on and I have the LCD one. With the amoled one it should be even better

We have 2 dinc2's I am the house and they are great phones for the kids. Running stock and no problems in over a year.
But I couldn't see using one as my daily driver. Hell I keep a thunderbolt as a back up just in case so I can just swap Sims.
To each their own, but I would just get the extended battery and carry one device.

Do you have unlimited data? Just wondering if going from 4G to 3G will force you into a new tiered plan..

I spoke to several reps and also read all the releases and supposedly no, it will not force your plan. The only thing that would force your plan change is if you take an upgrade from verizon, which I will no longer do. All phones will be bought off contract from other sources.
If verizon tries to take away unlimited, I would probably switch to at&t.

I have a 2750 extended Rezy battery with the over sized cover. I always keep it charged, stuffed into my backpack...it's my Rezy backup battery.
I'm adjusting to the 2 device deal. I'm a person that always has my phone in my dedicated left pants pocket. The difference between the Dinc AMOLD and the Rezy in my pocket is substantial. The Dinc is so light and thin that I can't even tell if it's in my pocket. With my Rezy, I never 'not' know that it's there.
I always have a small backpack with me so dealing with two devices is actually simple. I carry my Dinc phone in my pocket and the wifi Rezy in my backpack.
One thing I have discovered is that the Rezy runs cooler, and with improved battery life, when used only as a wifi Android video, audio and gaming tablet. We'll see how long I last with 2 devices...

I can agree there. Wifi on my rez has never seen 100F while on 4g I hit 120 with any kind of online gaming.

Now thats a thread we need to set up so devs can try to make a mod like that for Rezound. Hell id even pay for mod like that if it does indeed give that much of a battery increase.

Someone tried it on the Rezound, and said it didn't work. It would be great to have a mod like that tho. I wonder if it would work on my gnex...... Hmmm.... Anyway yeah it really is that good. I was amazed

Thanks for the info. Very good to know that. If mine were ever taken, I'm seriously considering Straight Talk. I think it's like $45 for unlimited everything. I just worry about their coverage.

"you calling it a Rezy is driving me mad"
Never admit that.
You've now enshrined REZY forever.
*wink*

BTW, as for data plan, I'm on a 5 phone family plan...2 iphone 4S's, 2 Droid 3's, and my Rezy_ound / Droid_Dinc_redible...4G this, 3G that...no big either way.

Are you 100% satisfy with your E3D? Why/why not?
Had mine for two weeks now...
Can't say I'm that happy. Random reboots, reception issues, and things like my battery discharging even though its plugged into my USB annoy me.
Stickin with it though, I have faith in this thing.
I am very satisfied with it in an "off-the-shelf" capacity. There is virtually no lag, and does everything I would expect from a non-rooted phone very well.
I don't have any of the issues though. No reboots, screen issues etc.
Once it is perm rooted it will be perfect.

Am I the only one with a perfect E3D? I've been reading threads from other site as well. A lot of people had problems. On the released date, I called sprint rep to upgrade. Ever since the day I received it, never had any problem, but for some reason still not satisfy. Maybe because there's no permanent root s-off?

Lmao mine takes about 6 to 7 hours to charge and it will sit at 99% and keep charging succks lol think its staying awake .
I was happy with the EVO but not Sprint. Sadly i blows in my area (or PR entirely) dropped calls, goes straight to roaming in the first floor of my house, average data speeds or 200kbps and a all time low of 7kbps etc. It wasnt worth the switch from TMO. Good thing they let me reactivate before 30 days of cancellation and its like it never happened im back at 5mbps land and my phone works at home now horray!!! Bummer since the 3VO was a nice peice of kit

I'm very happy no issues at All!! May be the green tint on the pics but it doesn't bother me.at all cuz of the Camera Effects u can change colors and stuff, battery life has been great
Ohhh I found a bug, my bootloader still says S-Off lol

For me i am Happy but would be happier if the stuff was better implemented, seriously HTC no Hardware Acceleration for 2D or Browser, They could have just taken the stuff from CM and put in, Also Animations aren't that smooth, when i plug in via USB the screen responsiveness goes down. 3D is something i am loving. Woulf be happier if they had put in a 8mpx camera in there to go with a 5mpx or just 2 8mpx
This phone gives me a boner every time I turn the screen on.
Everything is pretty much perfect except for the green tint thing and I'm hoping they'll fix that with a future software upgrade. If not, it's still not a deal breaker for me.

[Q] Use original Inc 1300 mAh Battery in 4G LTE

I have several of the original Incredible batteries that are 3.7VDC, 1300mAh, 4.81Whr lying around and with Sandy coming for a visit here in NJ, I was wondering if these can be used as backups for the 4G LTE Incredible (3.8VDC, 1700mAh, 6.46Whr). I do expect to lose power since we do for all major storms and I have a generator but would be nice if these can be used in this phone. If so, could these be charged in this phone as well? Thanks!

If his generator fails, he'll have no way to charge it anyway.
I don't know if the Incredible battery is the same physical size, but if it works, great. I'd have to spend some time finding my original Incredible, then taking my cases off both phones, then switching out the batteries to check.

don't know either, the inc2 batteries are the same as the 4g except for the mah rating.
Well, after getting them charged up in my son's Inc, I decided to try one in my 4G phone and while they are the same physical size they won't fit. The tabs on the contacts end are different. Damn...
My generator won't fail, I treat it like my baby! Cover it up at night when it's all cold and change it's oil on a regular basis. :fingers-crossed:

You should be able to use those batteries. People that switched from the original incredible to the incredible 2 reported being able to use their old batteries. It did require them to file down the tabs on the old batteries but after that they fit fine and worked. Since we discovered recently that the incredible 2 batteries work in the 4g it should work out fine for you. Not sure about charging but in your case you'll probably want to limit you generator to essential things.
Btw during large storms like that where you lose power, how does Verizon's network hold up? If the towers lose power doesn't that mean the network goes down in that area too?
Thanks! We've lived through plenty before but they seem to think this one might pack more of a wallop. I travel a lot and was suppose to head up to Boston for the week but decided to cancel all my appointments today. No reason to risk one's safety for a job. It looks like Pittsburgh will be getting some of this as well!

I was thinking of doing that but one thing I'm concerned about is the label and contacts placement on battery. On the original Dinc, the contacts are opposite (left-to-right) of the 4G. This could be why the older batteries won't charge.

In the past, it hasn't been too big of a problem and even our cable has worked when running on generator. Of course you never know what the next storm will bring. Last spring we were out of power for 5 days and Freehold 8 miles away was over 10 days. I had neighbors lined up to take showers (everyone here is on a well). My generator runs the well, one furnace, frig and a couple of circuits of lights. I won't let the kids plug in the big LED TV so they use the old 36" tube TV that's >25 years old and going strong. The winter isn't an issue because we have a high efficiency wood insert downstairs which will run you out of the house if you open it up. The benefits of living on 5 acres and all oak trees.

No, the incredible 2 batteries that were tried in the incredible 4, which are the same size and contact location, work but only one person tried charging and reported it wouldn't work. I'm planning on confirming that tomorrow. Since the battery isn't flipped from Inc 2 to the 4g polarity shouldn't be reversed. Unless the contact polarity inside the batteries themselves are reversed, but not sure why they would do that. To me I think it's worth a try to break the tabs and try them. If they don't work you shouldn't have any problem reusing them in the og incredible.

I hear ya, I'm on well and septic but probably not as rural as what you have. Gotta love that wood burner tho. I have a simple insert in the living room that heats most of the first floor surprisingly. I'd love to put one in the basement ducted into the furnace but so far am happy with the insert. Don't have many power issues so I haven't bothered to wire a generator to the well yet.

Phone shopping advice

I'm picking up a new phone from at&t tomorrow. The choices are the Samsung SG3 and the XO +. I've read the reviews, and after weighing the pros/cons and factoring in the price difference, I'm stumped. Does anyone have any hands on experience they can give me?

Personally HOX+ hands down. SG3 dual core vs. HOX+ quad core + 1, really no comparison. Only thing the SG3 has on the HOX+ is the 2gb of ram and sd card slot i believe it has in the USA version. I played with the SG3 in the store as before i knew anything about the HOX+ i was thinking to get it over the new iphone 5. Thing looks and feels like a cheap piece of plastic and not liking it at all and the dull colors the screen produces. Really personally preference on your part but if going off the specs along the HOX+ hands down imo at least.
Walk into the ATT store tomorrow and be the first to play with the HOX+ in the store and i think instantly you will make your mind up .

I see people complaining so much about removable batteries but unless you live in the stone age, how and when are you not near a wall jack to plug your phone in? I always have my device on the charger while i sleep so i start the day with a fresh charge, i work a desk job in an office so all day at work i can always plug it in if needed, then at home obviously i can plug it in if needed. Unless you're a world back packing traveler, who and why would you carry around 2+ spare batteries with you? lol, never understood that stuff?

An advantage of a phone with a removable battery is when the battery starts to deteriorate after maybe 3 years. With SGS3, you just buy a spare battery, pop it in and you're good to go. With HOX+, you'll have to take it to a service center and dissect the thing to have the battery replaced, and pay a service fee. Who knows if the phone will still feel as solid after tearing it up and putting it all back together. That said, I am still for the HOX+. Just something to consider if you're keeping the phone for a while.

Well of course but who the heck holds onto the same device for 3+ years, lol? Not matter how cutting edge your current device is (this for example for the time being as in today, who knows about tomorrow), in a few months and for sure in a year your device will be outdated even with the latest software upgrades and you'll be drooling over the next best thing. Longest i've ever kept a device was 2yrs and that was the Iphone 4 when it first came out. Only reason why i held out so long is because i didn't like the S3 at all and had high hopes for the Iphone 5 which is a joke compared to what's out now. 3 years, that's crazy talk my friend

I guess it depends upon one's lifestyle. I also charge my phone all night but during the day I am constantly moving. If I get to 20% by 5pm and then need to go out I like to have a spare battery in my pocket or briefcase. Also using the phone as a gps or tethering, which I do during the day, tends to drain the battery more than standby or talking. I spend a lot of time in airports and always see the poor folks gathered around the charging stands or wired to outlets in the floor. I don't have that problem if I have a couple of spare batteries charged. I can use the phone in the airport then on the plane. It takes 30 seconds to change a battery compared to hours to charge. Battery life is irrelevant if you can just replace them when they are dead, it doesn't matter if you get 12 hours or 24. At $4 each you can carry as may spares as you need.
But unfortunately it seems that the SG3 is the last top tier phone with a removable battery. The hox+, LG Optimus G, Sony Experia TL, and the Nokia Lumia 920 all have embedded batteries. Regardless I may end up with a hox+ and have to change the habits that I have developed since 2005. Maybe I will carry one of those AA battery recharging gadgets as a security blanket.

My Rezound is kinda wonky.

So, chief among the many issues I have with this phone is the fact that it will no longer recognize or mount it's own internal SD card aka "sdcard0" in recovery or in the OS. I have wiped the system, I have changed my ROM, I have changed my recovery. I don't want to accept that thing is just broken, but I am starting to lean that way. If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it.

Really I would love any good phone from the S3 to current but I have been for the last year completely broke, and my avenues for replacing it with something different are non existant. My device is probably just a lemon, but there isn't anything I can do and I don't have the $100 dollars Verizone want's so I can replace it with my insuarance.
Problems: I dropped it ONCE and the digitizer cracked, when I replaced it i cleaned it very well and was extra careful, but after a few days dust started to leak in between the LCD and the digitizer and I can't get it out or even figure out how it leaked in. Now the screen touches itself all the time and there isn't anything I can do. The battery was the worst I have ever had, both the original and the replacement and the extended battery isn't much better but it does double the thickness of the phone. It is slow with any ROM I use and for the past couple months it refuses to recognize its own internal SDcard. The extended battery feels like a backpack attached to my phone and I still have to carry a USB cord everywhere I go to charge it and I'm constantly cleaning the screen to try and get it to stop touching it's self.
I tried begging for someones old S3 or comparable older phone on another forum, even offered to trade stuff even though I don't have much but my post was ridiculed mercilessly and then deleted. Now I'm just trying to make do.

[Q] Which phone to upgrade to before end of year?

I want to take advantage of being able to upgrade my DNA at no cost to me, so I need to do that by the end of this year. The company is switching to employee purchase of phones starting next year. I'm on Verizon. Looking for recommendations from those that have switched, or are contemplating a switch soon. I've primarily been looking at the Turbo, LG G3, and One M8. I've been on HTC devices, so am comfortable/familiar with Sense, and currently running a One based ROM on my DNA. I'm also fond of the wireless charging options, but don't know if a lack of it is enough to rule a particular phone out. Being able to root is a plus. Also leaning to a replaceable battery being a plus as well. Wife recently picked up a Note 4. I'll look at it some more, but that seems almost too big.
Is anyone aware of any new devices due out this month? If not, what is your favorite option today and why?
Thanks!
I just got the Note 4 and love it!!
Also came from the DNA and I can tell you, you'll be very pleased with the battery life!!
I was also considering the new Nexus device but since it isn't on VZW yet and I didn't want to wait with my DNA screen shattered I went with the Note 4 and I'm definitely not disappointed.
The Droid Turbo was released not too long ago, and I'm really leaning towards it for my contract upgrade in a couple of weeks. It's still an internal battery unfortunately, but what caught my attention was it having nearly twice the capacity of the DNA. Since I have to charge my DNA halfway through the day, I'd be more than satisfied with the Turbo's battery life. Plus, it has some beefy specs as well. Camera has been reported to have some trouble with delay, but that might be corrected in a software update.
I did a little more reading last night and am starting to lean towards the LG G3. A little smaller than the Note 4 which is a good thing. Replaceable battery, rootable, and with a $10 hack can be changed to Qi wireless charging. I need to go spend some hands on time with it in the store. I've considered the Turbo as well, but with the reported camera issues, and some reporting earpiece volume issues, I just find myself questioning Motorola's product testing if they send these issues out with a hope to fix them later in a software update.

Hmm, I'm now thinking about the Note 4 as well due to its camera features and the S-pen. So, when you say pleased with the battery life...how pleased are we talking? I guess getting through the day wouldn't be nearly as much a problem as it is sometimes with the DNA?

I don't know about you but toward the end of my 2 years on the DNA I'd have to plug my phone in after about 5-6hrs of moderate use or it was flat dead!
So far with the Note 4 I've actually managed 2 full days on one charge a couple times.. Keeping in mind it's a new phone so I'm playing on it a lot!
Also the fast charge is awesome! I have had it go from 50% to a full charge in about 15 minutes on the charger! (that's only using the included "adaptive fast charger" from Samsung)
The S-pen is cool! I felt like it might be one of those things that lost its "cool factor" once I played with it enough but I keep finding new useful reasons pull it out.. Easily screenshoting and cropping an Instagram post using the Screen Write function for example.
Or more obvious things like quickly jotting down a number or reminder. Which are a lot more useful and easy than I had though they would be.
The chances of getting a fully functional ROOT seem far out if it ever happens.. So that's a bit of a downside. But I can say this is the first phone I've had that I wasn't just dying to root. I honestly have very little reason to root it other than getting Lollipop before VZW and Samsung get it on the update manager.
The phone is big! I will say that.. Probably one of the only things I've had issues with is one handed typing. But I'm getting use to it. It can be very difficult stretching that thumb up to reach things with one hand but I guess that's the price we pay for a large screen. Which is a beautiful display by the way... Both cameras rock too! It's packed with fx, filters and neat camera features that are a lot of fun.
Anyway I hope you are happy with whatever you get! I did talk to a guy over the weekend who has LG G3 and he told me he "hates it" although he couldn't really tell me why.. Haha I haven't played with one but they seem pretty comparable
By the way I thought I'd share that when I got home and started typing this my battery was at 56% (after a full day of pretty heavy use) and in the time it's taken me to type this up (on the phone via tapatalk) while plugged into the fast charger I'm up to 72%
Just thought I'd share an update, in case the op might be still deciding.
I opted for the Note 4. Got it in the mail yesterday, and so far I'm very impressed! It's not as hard to handle as I thought it'd be due to its size. I have yet to give the battery a good test, gotta break it in and actually do a near full run-down, since I had it plugged in most of the day yesterday. But this display is absolutely gorgeous! Don't think I'll be using the s-pen much, but who knows, maybe I'll find more use for it further down the road. I also enjoy using the finger print scanner; I find it quicker to unlock. At times it's frustrating that it doesn't work, but that's because I'm not being precise enough.
Thought I'd share my first impressions. Thanks for the input starscream!
Guess I should've come back to update this. I wound up getting the LG G3 a week ago. Already rooted and installed Skydragon ROM and love it. I also purchased the sticker for the battery door that changes it from NFC only to NFC plus wireless charging. Battery life has been great, and I like the knock knock option for turning on the screen. Transition from my DNA to the G3 has been easy.
Appreciate the suggestions and feedback from everyone!
