Keyboard Switching App - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey folks, as some of the custom ROMs for our eLTEvo's have -
a) removed Swype, and therefore removed a relatively easy way to switch keyboards (why did you do it this way HTC, why?)
and/or
b) the notification based switcher
I created a quick app, for those needing it, that I built in Tasker. Install it like any other application. When you run it, you should get the pop-up selection list of the keyboards you have installed.
Tested on CleanROM BE 2.1, and an HTC One-S running CM10/JellyBean (pre-Alpha).
Dev's - feel free to include this in your ROMs if you like. A shout-out would be appreciated. Thanks to Zach D. for testing, to Pent for creating Tasker, and Everaldo and The Crystal Project for the app icon.

Hi. Thanks for stopping by!
Some of the custom ROMs for our devices have "lost" the ability to easily switch keyboards, hence this app.

-Jerry

Very nice! Thanks

Well, the definition depends on your point-of-view...
a) Solely for the purpose of this app, any ROM that has been modified to remove keyboard switching functionality.
b) If you ask a Sprint rep, any ROM that didn't come on the phone, from the factory.
c) Basically, most of the ROMs in these 2 threads, even if they have "stock" in the name -
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1594
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1686
d) For further definitions, you could ask a (in alphabetical order)
1) Chuck Norris (if you dare)
2) Computer science major
3) Priest
4) Rabbi
5) ROM chef
6) ROM developer
7) Shaman
8) Witch doctor
Sorry, couldn't resist item "d", but it's partially the product of having a shot of espresso in my 3rd coffee of the morning... :silly:
Anyway, thanks for asking, as you've made me realize I built the app to only install on ICS or higher. It should work OK on Gingerbread and up if I make a simple change and rebuild it...

Thanks for sharing. It's beyond me why some devs remove this functionality. Are you sure it's linked to removing swype? I see you kind of blame HTC for the switcher, but I first noticed the notification toggle when running AOKP in my OG Evo, which I'm pretty certain didn't come with swype, and fully certain had no HTC/sense coding, so I assumed it was just new to Android 4.0+

You're most welcome. I believe some devs have removed it due to user requests or as part of bloat removal (at least from what I've read, I'm subscribed all over the eLTEvo dev place... ).
As far as Swype goes - on a stock(ish) ROM, that is where you go to (via settings), in order to switch keyboards. It's the topmost button in the Swype settings. Why HTC put it there is a mystery to me... ...but I'm not blaming them.
As far as removing the notification icon, that's a totally separate mod. As to where it originated, I have no idea. Never looked at AOKP when I was still on my OG Evo - I ran either MikG or CM7, and I don't recall seeing that in CM7. Go figure...

You wouldn't have seen it on CM7 cuz that was android 2.3. But I had it on AOKP on Evo 4g, which didn't have swype or any HTC stuff. So I'm pretty sure it's just native to Android 4.0+.
Just my thoughts. I had to pop in to redownload your app cuz I lost my Evo and actually had to buy a new one. So once again, big big thanks to you.

[Q] Should I Remake These Themes?

[Stardust, Wrinkled Paper, Little Big Planet, Ubuntu, Atlantis]
I have a few old themes that I made for the G1 way back when that I was thinking of recreating for the MT4G. My question is which, if any, would you guys like to see? I would be making it for the community and not for myself.
There are already plenty of good ones out that I've settled on so this would all be for you guys.
Check my Signature for links to the old G1 threads and have a look at them. Of course everything would be updated to fit 2.2 and 2.3 standards as well as higher resolution for everything.

Darkstar was created by a team of dev's which did not include me. I only listed themes I worked on so unfortunately no DS from me. Sorry
If you do remake them, will they work on stock ROM or will it still need a home replacement?

These themes do not require a Home Replacement. They are themes you would have to be rooted to use and have to flash to apply.
I am working on making an LBP2 theme that will require an Home Replacement and will be put up in the market but anything I put up on XDA won't need it.

I always loved your themes on the g1, I actually still have one on it. I think you should make some for cm7 theme manager so that you can sell them on the market. Since cm7 is on many devices you would get a lot more downloads since the theme manager works on every phone cm7 does. A lot of the guys are making free themes and donate versions of the same theme. I am not saying I wouldn't appreciate having the more in depth themes you are capable of making, I just think there would be a much larger target audience if you hooked up some awesome cm7 themes.

I will look into it. I stopped modding my G1 a long time ago and have been out of the loop on slot of things. Having gotten a MT4G, I want to get back into theme making. I have some new ideas as well but I love remakes.

HTC Sense Keyboard?

Is there a way I can get a copy of the stock HTC Keyboard on the G2? I miss it so much from my Inspire 4G. I believe it was Sense 2.1. Preferably without rooting?

I have but it seems more complicated than just a quick apk install. The ones I read have some sort of ime which needs to be modified to work without Sense. It seems to be over my head. I'm not a complete noob, I rooted my Inspire 4G but found I prefer stock for what I do. But the keyboard thing really bugs me on this device.
Try looking up jonasl HTC ime because all that was needed was 2 apks to install

This is the HTC skin from Smart Keyboard Pro (though it doesn't look as good as the original). It gives the directional keys also (you can use them with any skin). It has a lot of skins to begin with, and you have the option to get more (from the app forum).
There are several options for lookalikes - thumb keyboard comes very close, and I really appreciate the suggestion. But these don't quite do it. I've resorted to Swype till I figure this out. I'm noticing these and the included keyboards don't come with a keyboard hide button either which gets incredibly annoying especially while using the internet browser. Sort of frustrating how a supposedly superior device seems less thought through than the HTC.

Cool, but really uses the juice. It's a resource hog, at least on ICS. Since it was most likely engineered for JB, this shouldn't be a shock.

Do AOSP roms (namely cm10) not support the google now icons in the status bar like ICS Sense does? Any way to add them with custom themes? I still see the cards listed in my notification drop down menu, just not on the status bar.

[Q] What are considered the "best" HTC EVO LTE ROMS?

You would need to define your criteria for "best" first.
For me, "best" ROMs are ROMs that give me better speed, more features, and similar stability to stock. I also keep my devices for a pretty long time. So as they age I look to the community for support in keeping up to date. Hell, I still have a Tegra 2 tablet (Gtab) and my old Hero C laying around.
In this respect, I have had very good luck with ViperROM on the LTE. YMMV

I believe the apk has to be modded to work with sense. I tried restoring some aosp system apps on a sense rom and just got FCs. Clean ROM used to have a bunch of modded apks but I think it's been abandoned...haven't seen any out there for 4.1.2 yet.

This is always going to be a question that never has the perfect answer. It depends on what you want/need. Go sense if you want the classic evo look and just want the basic experience its for people who don't care as much about making the device faster and better, they just want it to work and the only real reason they rooted it was to get rid of the bloatware. Keep it simple stupid. Honestly sense is fast, but aosp is is much more reliable and stable. Sense kernels have that small chance of corrupting your file system if and when your device crashes. It's a small chance but a chance none the less.
AOSP is by far the best for the ones who do want to unlock the devices full potential. AOSP (Android open source project) roms are more difficult to create and perfect but they give these devices more potential but its also up to the user to do his or her research. Don't flash or tweak even the slightest thing until you do your research and search xda and google. When you find a guide that of course isn't too old and you know you can trust it, read it over and over and bookmark it. Always search xda but never listen to the opinions of others until you test it yourself.
These rom creators work hard and they expect us to know what we are doing.
tl;dr - I will just say this, if your willing to spend more time to give you the best experience go AOSP. And if you go AOSP go CyanogenMod and nothing else. And for the kernel if you do wish to use a custom kernel I hightly recommend Komodo if you want an even better user experience.
Best rom is...
... the one that works best for you
FWIW. I love the ViperRom. Phone feels like it just "works" and, if I want, there are lots of customizations available.
That said, I just switched to HatkaLTE because I wanted to stay with a sense rom and it seems to me that the last update of ViperRom reintroduced the original rom's sensor problems on my phone. [I say seems because it's still not perfect, just better, on the HatkaLTE and maybe the hardware has developed a defect]. I can't say much about this rom yet because I haven't had it on my phone long enough and because I'm also playing around with different launchers at the same time.
Good luck!

IDK, but I'm really excited to install the new VIPERROM
Very, very excited. Hopefully it (re)fixes the proximity sensor problem, but if not, I have the init file all ready to solve the problem myself!
I have to agree with many of the posts, it's more of a personal taste question. I've run almost every ROM at some point, and I love the speed of AOSP, but like the features of Sense. There are a few key features that you lose on AOSP. After a whole lot of flashing, I've settled on SuperJelly Bareback, it strips out all the bloat of Sense while retaining those key features, and is almost spot on with the speed of AOSP. It's my happy medium. Good luck and happy flashing.
If you dont need Bluetooth, Sense 5. Otherwise Viper or Super LTE.

Shout out...

To all the viper team (Vin [yes we had a rough start but my ignorance got the best of me] and viperboy), you two have gone above and beyond what anyone probably thought was possible on the evo 4g lte.
Many others are there as well (bigdaddy, CPT TB, ThickLizard, and many others and I'll modify this after some sleep, but dam, you guys are the bomb and I know we will lose you in the future.

Team Venom (aa well as many others on this forum, I apologize for anyone whom I'm sure I excluded, there's just too many great developers and contributors here) should be called Team Android. IMO, they are better than Google, and get paid primarily by donations.

Let me begin with a thanks for the message behind this thread.
As for the sense 5 rom... I will begin working on the sense 5 version of viper4g, when sprint/htc gives us an official update (or when it's leaked). This is due to not wanting to spend hours modifying the code to work with an inherently flawed port as my base, just to have to scrap it when the time comes to work with official files for this device.
I know it's tough to choose between the latest and greatest (sense 5) or your favorite rom that is still based on sense 4+, but I'd assume that most other devs feel the same in regards to building from an ruu, or at least from a rom base that is a product of an official ruu for this (or their respective) device.
Only reason I am anxious I am hoping sense 5 will free up some ram
Thanks!
