Can you turn on phone using only charging cable (no battery) ? - Galaxy S III Q&A, (US Carriers)

I thought you could, VZW support says no.

If no one knows for sure, would someone mind trying it? Thanks in advance.

I don't mean to sound like an ass but why don't you just try it yourself?
Anyway, I get my phone in the mail tomorrow so I will try it then. However, My Galaxy nexus and Galaxy S2 both required the battery installed to boot so I'd imagine that the S3 will be the same.

Samsung Jig

Hey guys and gals,
Just wanted to update everyone, the micro-usb jig that worked so well on the captivate also happens to work on the Note. Just tried mine out of curiosity and it worked. Plug it in, wait 3-4 seconds, vibrate, download mode...
I had not seen this posted anywhere in here, so just in case someone hard bricks this epic device, we do have a backdoor...
I wonder then, can the jig be used to reset the flash counter to zero?
My Samsung Galaxy Note™ is smarter than your Honor Student.
yes it works to get you into download mode which is fantastic however it will not aid in resetting the flash counter like it did on the SGS2
and BTW this isnt considered a development, this actually should have been opened in the General Section....

They are physical micro-usb sticks that are meant to help you recover from a bricking.
can you tell us where to get one ?

You can buy them off of ebay, or at least you used to be able to, or you can build one. I built mine from an extra data cable I had laying around at the time. It forces the phone into download mode, which is very convenient for those of us that flash roms at will.
This one is a fancy version of the home-built kind, mine is pretty rough, but it does the job and that's all that really matters...

I bought one from: http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-s-download-mode-jig/
I tried it on my Note and it gets to Download Mode fine. Great device incase of a brick that disables the button combos.
thanks man.

I bought one when my wife bricked her Captivate last year, and tested it on my note the day I got it. I figured it worked for all Samsung phones so I didn't think it was worth mentioning. Thanks anyway. BTW, if someone is looking to buy a jig, this is the one I got from Amazon, it's 3 bucks cheaper and works just as good, not to mention free Prime shipping if you have a membership.

Yes it says i9100 but it works for the i777. I just bought from that link and replaced it my I777 with basically the same problem you have. Problem was solved (see "usb won't connect" thread in Q&A).
There's a YouTube video showing how to replace it on the i9100, which I followed and is extremely similar to the i777.

I must add, that you should really evaluate yourself, and decide if you have the skills to do it. It can damage your phone permanently if you don't do it the right way.

at the risk of necromancing.... if anyone should stumble upon this looking for help like I did, through google. When you open your i777 up, the port board in your i777 says i9100, so yes the above listed item would work.

Won't charge?
Like rushaan stated that you should think before you go any further, if your battery will not charge it could be more of an issue than a charger. For the last week I have been trying to boot mine and only get one of 2 messages, The Samsung boot image, and I have done all most everything I have read in our forums. The last run, I had been re-installing some apps, after a ROM change, all was going great ,then a message came up Stating that "due to the battery heating up,it was shutting down the charger" so, of course battery was drained and con not get the freakin' phone to do anything but show the "SAMSUNG" boot animation.. NOW, since then I can not get it to boot, esp. into CWM recovery. I am still reading to see what file/image that I maybe able to use while utilizing ODIN. So,with that being said look a bit more in-depth before you think you have the correct solution.

Hardware partition pull via UART -- Total stock recovery possible

hey guys. I just found a way to pull the stock partitions. The UART port which I've been using for debugging purposes has a root prompt while the battery is charging.
As you all know there is no truely going "back-to-stock" on this device yet... you can flash a leaked rom or something and get close, but you can't get totally back to the way things were bit-for-bit.
So, utilizing this newly found battery charging exploit, I can pull the stock flash off of it, package it into Odin format, then release it and we will have a truely sane firmware to fall back on. This firmware would destroy any records of changes and would be totally transparent even to data forensics experts. I did this before on a Samsung Captivate.
If anyone is interested, I can provide this service. I just need a device for a few hours. Anyone local? Anyone have a spare phone?

Why would they load a kernel for battery charging? Is it to quote on quote "stop from what we are doing"? Or is it just to give the fancy battery indicator that it is indeed 'charging'?
Battery charging is controlled by the kernel.
Does the kernel always interact with the battery on that low of an level on other devices?
Sent from my rooted Galaxy Note 2.
It did on the PSP.

Yeah. If you notice when you turn off your device and then plug it in, it boots just enough to a charging screen. The kernel is handling the charging at that point. I believe HTC has moved to using the recovery kernel to charge. I am not sure about Samsung.
I remember on the Thunderbolt, if you fubarred the kernel, you couldnt charge until you flashed a good kernel.
Nevermind. Someone mail him your stock phone please lol
Edit. Why can't adam just screen share with someone and tell them what to do over the phone?

We'd be glad to help but can you give us a bit more info? Does it charge? Does anything happen? Was it dropped? Get it wet? How long have you had it and when did it stop working. Hard to help based solely on "it won't turn on anymore."

[Q] Flashing US Cellular to Verizon (Not Pre-Paid)?

Hello all,
A friend of mine is mailing me his old Note 2 from US Cellular in hopes of helping me replace my HTC Droid DNA which is on Verizon. My question is if I can flash the Note 2 over to Verizon to replace my current device? Not sure if his phone takes a SIM card or not. I am also not on a Pre-Paid plan. Hope someone can help me out with this. Thanks in advance.

To be honest it would t matter either way. You could flash it but the min they check the esn and it's not in their system then it will be a fight.
When I last worked for Verizon we were trained on what to look for and to flat out deny any device not in their system.
I would flash it first but like said it won't matter much either way.
