Micro stuttering when scrolling through home screens normal? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I just got my S3 (I9300) 2 weeks ago and I love it. Very fast. But the thing that concerns me is that sometimes when I'm scrolling through home screens in touchwiz i see micro stutters in the transitions (like semi-lag but not fully lag, hopefully you guys know what I mean).
Is this normal?
I'm a little worried..
I am on the LF2 firmware. Completely stock, haven't rooted or installed any custom ROMS.

Is it the redraw? Theres a fix for that
Or the wallpaper scrolling? Fix for that too
Use the search function. Its really helpful, as is google search

No its not the redraw issue. It happens when i scroll between home screens.

On touchwiz?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

Yes on TW, you can not do much about this. there SOME sammy roms Foxhound is one with the right kernel that got rid of the micro stutter on TW
but its TW not the phone or Rom!!!
most other launchers do not have this problem.

Yes from touchwiz, the launcher that Samsung puts in.

Get nova or apex launcher
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium

Anyone else notice these micro stutters by moving through the home screens?
I just need to make sure this is not a faulty device/hardware issue.

Yes its the launcher mate. Seen this posted before.
As i said. Try nova launcher

Never noticed any stutter on the home screen scrolling I'm using stock LFB rom with speedmod kernel.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app

From my experience, every Android phone I have ever owned has had some degree of micro stuttering, and it has always bugged me. It's also interesting, because some people claim not to be able to perceive any stuttering, while others do, so it seems to be a very subjective matter.
I'm very happy to say, however, that the experimental builds of Jelly Bean have finally stopped 95% of this issue for me. I'm hopeful that once Samsung releases official Jelly Bean binaries we will see the remaining 5% gone too, but either way, I believe it is already smoother than any iOS device out there, which has generally been my baseline.
Edit: Changing launchers does help, but only on the home screen and app draw.

If you are using a live wallpaper try to change it as some LW are laggy.
Also try to check the services that are running in your background through setting-application manager. Maybe you have too many background processes
And lastly wait for jellybean update as this will make the UI interface super smooth cause by project butter of Google

It's no JUST TW. There is still some stuttering, even running CM9. Yes, the amount of stuttering is reduced, but the root cause is still at the heart of Android (pre JB anyway).

In all fairness you are right. But TW is the most noticeable, and moaned about lol

LAG FREE Launcher (Promise) TSF Shell-----but its 15 bucks.
Even SPB shell runs damn smooth-----15 bucks
adw ex launcher, i had no lag - but i liked TW better
im on MiUi now, and again No Lag with the MiUi Launcher.
so yes i understand it happens, i saw the lag in Nova, and Apex, and Trabuchet ( or whatever )
im not saying your wrong, just pointing out that you DONT have to live with it and its NOT the hardware/phone....thats all i was getting at.

Agreed, but the launcher is such a small aspect of the phone that it usually just annoyed me more, as it proved the hardware was capable, but that Android itself was slow!
Anyway, "project butter" has totally changed the experience, and will be a big draw card to iPhone users who were hesitant to switch in the past

Thank you all for your help!!

ADW. EX

Anyone running this?
I have it but I really like this new TW
I'm curious as to how smooth it is but I just can't bring myself to install it because TW is so good now.

I came from ADW.EX on my Infuse. I vowed to run the SGS2 for at least a day without ADW because of the new touchwiz.
I made it 6 hours....
Switched to free adw, running well and much more capable than stock
I went about two days on the stock home, then switched to adw.

I've been ADW. EX since it was released. I've used it on every device I've had since, and I'm using it now. No other launcher trumps its functionality imo. I just can't use anything else.
It runs beautifully on the i777 at 1600MHz.

Any else using the EX version over TW noticing slight delays no present in TW? Especially opening something from the tray.
I am a bit confused about Touch Wiz. I am running rooted Galaxy s2 777 on custom kernel and unnamed rom. Where can I get touch wiz? is it an app? I am using ADW myself but not EX, where can I get a free version of ex?
How do I install downloaded apps from my PC and put then to install on my phone?
Any help would be appreciated.
There are lots of settings for adw.ex! I love that you can tweak it beyond reason! Lol
One thing I've done tho is changed desktop scrolling speeds and desktop bounce in the settings to maximize fluid page transitions.
Touchwiz feels very smooth and a contributing factor would be the speed and bounce at which the pages turn.
So now when I change the scrolling animation to the fly in or cube, its important to tweak those speeds (faster or slower) to improve the feel of the transition.

[Q] Performance of ICS Leaks

Maybe my Rezound is just weird, but the latest leaks seem to lag a pretty decent amount for me. I wouldn't say it's unbearable, but some apps just take longer to load and the animations are kind of choppy when compared to my Samsung Fascinate (obviously with inferior hardware) that's running ICS right now. Is this just because HTC hasn't implemented full hardware acceleration in the UI or are there some things I can try that would help?

It is called taking a 100 or so MB OS and making it 500+MB with sense...lol. also too, to be fair, HTC hasn't released a final product, so it may improve drastically.

Lol...that could be it. It's insane how much **** they can pack into a single ROM. On my Fascinate I'm used to seeing a ~110MB ROM at the absolute most and on this thing they usually exceed 500MB.
My guess is since it's not finished they probably just haven't implemented full HW acceleration but I'm hoping to get some kind of conclusive answer.
they are "leaks" for a reason.
we are basically all testing for HTC.
I wouldn't put it past them if they read these threads as we do all the work finding the bugs.
or at least the DEVs do I mean!
It's like you have a 4 cyl car and only 2 are working lol.
not too mention this is ICS with sense 3.5..
I don't know if we will get it with that, or 3.6 or 4.0, so it's all in the air.
TBH ICS isn't anything to go crazy about. I thought the same waiting for froyo with the Eris, and also about GB on the inc1..
change is great but nothing to lose sleep over.
Without Sense, ICS is awesome. With sense, it is probably slightly higher performance than GB. The UI will otherwise look similar. But the Desensed roms run really well on my rezound. After stripping out as much as possible the size of the rom can be reduced significantly.
i'm assuming the acceleration what's causing golauncher, lpp and adw ex to slow down to a crawl. 3 screens and 8 functional widgets seems to be too much for ICS outside of sense

When I flashed Scott's stock ICS rom, it lagged quite a bit just from scrolling through the screens so I'm assuming this is normal.
I'm running Scott's CleanROM 2.1 now. And I have to say I like it a lot (aside from Sense of course lol). My benchmarks are much higher because I believe ICS is built for dual-core devices? I have amazing performance. Have you tried this ROM?

wow, I have never seen a phone run 8 widgets well. Even aosp roms I've run, once I add on a ton of widgets, all the launchers I've tried like adw and launcher pro start to lag.
I'm running Scott's CleanRom that is a 4.0.1 leak with sense 3.5 overlay. It actually doesn't lag up to much, he did an amazing job. But I'm already ready for some fixes on his (Scott) Senseless Rom, then I will be back on it lol.

Give this a shot http://www.mediafire.com/?8ok2adqawvd82m2 it's the stock ics launcher from a 4.0.1 rom that made speed improvements on it. Let me know if you think it's smoother than the original stock. Just push it via adb and see how it goes.
I don't need a stock launcher, tryin to figure why I have issues with golauncher with ics when the exact setup is fine on ginger

Ah yeah I saw a "t" in there that wasn't there lol. Yeah I saw the team syndicate one and I tried it out, only problem is it was kinda designed for gb and froyo so it has a virtual notification bar that can't be disabled... GO Launcher EX is good. Has lots of features that most Launchers don't
But I always miss the glorious sense widgets that you cannot get any where else.
Honestly I've warmed up to the sense launcher a bit. Its basic and bare but the cool animations and awesome sense widgets make it worth using. As far as real estate, Go launcher HD had the issue too, just seems to be a honeycomb thing so whatever really. Think I'll just stick with Sense for now!
yea go launcher HD (beta) is a nice alternative to the stock or htc launchers for sure. just started using it today and really like the folder support

Nobody can help you with the information provided. We need your current ROM, kernel, any other information you can provide about what exactly you're running. Virtually all ICS ROMs have wallpapers that will scroll as you swipe from screen to screen(I assume that's what you're talking about). Also, launchers such as Nova or Apex have options that let you have a static wallpaper that doesn't scroll when you switch home screens.

I assumed that because it isn't working in the way I want, ie wallpaper doesn't scroll, that I would need to use new one. This same problem happened in gingerbread when I updated to 2.3.6 and there is no way to fix it except by changing the rom or firmware version.
So that's why I thought it wouldn't matter.

Huh, I don't remember that happening with UCKK6. I only ran it for about a week a long time ago though, so I don't really remember. Anyway, yeah, whether or not a the wallpaper scrolls is generally driven by the rom. For instance, on my wife's Inspire, Sense 2.1 roms have scrolling wallpaper while sense 3.0 and 3.5 roms do not.
Kind of irritating to not have it in my opinion...but the solution is just to switch to a different rom. If you want a Touchwiz based rom, I'd suggest trying ShoStock2 or Phonebricker. If you want a Google AOSP based rom, try out AOKP or CM9.

Of course it's the launcher. It has been this way for months.

Huh. I've never actually used the TW ICS launcher because it looked so terrible...always stuck to Apex or Go. It's pretty crappy of AT&T to remove features in a new launcher.
So you think I should use something that doesn't have touch wiz?

I had this issue with my old droid charge.
try downloading zedge (i know....) and picking a random wallpaper, install it and see if that gives you any scrolling...
I was able to get scrolling to work by uploading my wallpaper jpg to a file host and then opening it via web browser and setting as wallpaper as well, but if i tried to set the wallpaper via the homescreen settings it would crop most of the picture and all i had was the very center of the image zoomed in with no scrolling.

It is not the launcher, it is the gallery. The one packed in the original rom does not support it. Switch the gallery from a rom that does, most of the i9100 do and the custom roms here

Are you sure? Because I know I have used some of the stock leaks and just installed apex launcher. Pretty sure any other launcher allows scrolling

It seemed to work for me. I threw an aosp gallery into the rom and the scrolling wallpapers worked for me at least.

Does the gallery somehow control scrolling features of live wallpapers too then? Because those won't work in TW or any other launcher on the android market either.

I've never run live wallpapers so I can't answer that, I just know that I replaced the gallery in the leak and it allowed me to resize my wallpaper and allow it to scroll from page to page.

Tried zedge just now, no dice. I've tried a few other apps that set wallpapers as well and they just give me some weird zoom and no scrolling.
