Tough luck, unfortunately. I remember I had to get a PSP for sister's birthday. It was in 2 weeks. She opens the box and screen is cracked. The weird part is, the casing is perfect, but the LCD itself is cracked. I go back to Best Buy, and there's nothing they can do, since the thing left the store and 2 weeks passed. I had to buy another one.
Think about it yourself. If you were Sprint, would you think that screen miraculously just broke, or the person in front of you simply trying to avoid paying a deductible?
It's a crappy deal, but it happens.
I'd be pissed

How does the $8 insurance NOT cover this?
Take it to another Sprint store.
That's complete BS that they wouldn't replace it.

The $8 insurance does cover this, he does not want to pay Asurion the $100 deductible to have it replaced. The OP does not want to give up his phone for a replacement and pay the deductible of insurance. Instead he wants a service center, if thats actually where he is going to, and not just a regular store front, to fix it for him.
Service centers (in store) have the ability to fix stuff, and generally they do repairs on stuff that is warrantied thru the manufacturer. Key word is Warranty, ie manufacturers defect.
PHYSICAL Damage, ie broken glass, lcd, water damage, are not covered by this and must be dealt with thru insurance provided by Asurioun.
Bottom line is if the screen is broken in the wireless industry thats considered Physical Damage and not covered by any warranty. Not covered by any instore repair or exchange.
This is coverd thru the insurance agency via replacement thru the mail and a deductible.

Actually let me get some clarification.
The digitizer is the unseen part of the Glass that responds to touch.
Is the Glass broken or intact?
If the glass is intact, and your device is not responsive to touch, and has no liquid or physical damge then yes the service center should repair/replace that device in house.
If the GLASS is broken, that then suggests physical damage. Regardless of the digitizer working or not, if the glass is broken they arent obligated to fix it. That now falls under Physical Damage / Customer abuse, voids all warranty, and is up to you to use Asurion / File the insurance claim, pay a deductible and get a replacement.
thats crazy that its broken... Had a similar problem on my OG EVO, however Asurion upgraded me to the 3D, so the 100$ deductable was worth it (for me)...
I wonder if you paying a repair center to fix it, would be less than 100$?
Yeah, it's pretty universal for every carrier (I'm actually a tech in a Sprint service center right now, but I've worked for others).
If it stops working but there's no actual damage to it (cracks, liquid, etc) it's considered a failure. With Sprint specifically, if you have the $4 or $8 plan it's a free replacement or repair. If you don't, it's $35 or you can go through the manufacturer if it's still under their warranty. Other carriers will usually have a replacement through the mail program. With those, if you send them back a phone that's been damaged as opposed to failed, they'll ship it back and bill you the full price of the replacement.
If the phone's been damaged (or lost) that's a different story. As far as I know, every carrier uses Asurion, and that's a $50 or $100 deductible depending on the phone. The analogy would be car insurance - if your car breaks when it's under the warranty, they fix it free. If you crash your car, you pay a deductible to get it fixed.
Since screens don't ordinarily crack on their own, that's considered user damage and you have to pay for it.
And incidentally, if it had failed but not been damaged, they would have still had to order you a refurbished replacement (for free) since Sprint isn't shipping out digitizers.

You might be able to find you mb online for a cheap price along with your lcd. The mother board and screen are easily replaced with the correct tools, patience, and a little nerve. I've done a few myself and the process isn't that time consuming either. If you can track down the parts for the right price I'd say give it a shot if your up to it. If not you can always sell the processor, ram and hd for parts or keep them as a backup. Just a thought and sorry for your loss. I had a laptop mb crash on me so I know its a frustrating ordeal.

Don't listen to them, one time i broke the screen on my palm pixi(old phone which i had insurance on), went to the sprint store nearest to me they no can do, so i went to the one a little further away and they replaced it... it really depends on who you talk to.
Sometimes key thing is the way u talk. I find it they been stressed with the *****ing of other people. Be nice ask how is your day etc. Sometimes it works and they will go ahead and help as much they can. I have people try their hardest to help long after I given up.

My digitizer was malfunctioning and they replaced the screen. The glass was intact but wan't responsive most of the time. I didn't have to pay a dime. If you broke the screen, your probably out of luck and will have to pay the deductable to get it replaced. Or you can purchase a new screen and replace it yourself. I'm not sure if it's all you would need but they sell them on Amazon. I haven't posted enough here to give you the link.
I will agree it depends on the Sprint repair store you go to. The one right by me has an evo with a shattered screen, and the sign says "We can fix this". They are a corporate sprint store, and have always been really good with customer service.
yea the sprint store around here will fix it also but it cost 75 bucks to get it fixed just pay it u broke the screen thats what insurance is for you pay 100 dollar deductable so u dont have to pay 600 for a new phone call them tell them you lost it and then u will get to keep the old one and im sure you can find someone on craigslist that will give ya a little cash for the broken one prolly fix it themselves and flash to cricket
As mentioned, it depends on what store you go through and how you talk to people. I took my OG Evo to the Sprint service store because a piece of the case just broke for no reason and had them look at it, they took it back and put a new housing on it and told me that they are not suppose to repair physically damaged phones but they did me a favor.
If you don't want to pay $100 then get a Digitizer from ebay, a tool kit and do it yourself. You would be amazed what you can do on your own and save a buck.

This is very true with sprint. I have insurance and been in multiple stores for different issues. Once u find a certain store that does things the way u like, stick to that store. I have had probably 6 or 7 devices replaced(some of them the same model) and 2 upgrades done without ever paying a deductible. Some stores wouldn't do anything some would tell me I have to file with assuron, this tore looks at what I bring in and if is hardware problem takes care of me no questions asked. Hopefully they never change.
If ur ever trying to dispute something over the phone and someone isn't telling u what u want to hear, hang up and call back u will probably get another call center with different beliefs. I've had people knock 75 dollars off bills for some bs the kids did right after other people tell me there is absolutely nothing that can be done

Not sure what you mean by 'broke"? The glass is broke, or it doesn't work properly broke? Yes if the glass is broken that they say they wont replace it. If it doesn't work properly then that is covered under your 1 year warranty by HTC.
Now if the glass is broke how do you expect them no believe that you didn't drop it? How many people do think show up/call with broken screens and say it just broke? Now with that said I have seen them break on airplanes.
Use your insurance or go to a store and be really nice.
My wife and I will be looking to renew our unlimited contract and we're going with the rezound. Since replacing these phones (as a result of loss or damage) is becoming increasingly expensive, I'm looking to see which vendor has the best insurance package. Can anyone shed some light on what's available? I don't mind spending an extra $50 for the device (for example Best Buy at $300 vs. Amazon at $250) if the insurance will protect us better.
What insurance has the community gone with to minimize replacement expenses in the case of a lost, stolen or broken device? And please don't say "just don't lose or drop your phone."
Thanks!

I just was doing some research about this also since I was not happy with my experience with Asurion. After looking around I found "Securranty" that insures phones also. Doesn't matter to them where you buy the device. They claimed on the call with me they will still warranty an unlocked phone. The price seemed fair and I couldn't find anything bad about the company while digging around which seemed crazy. Couple things that should be noted is they are fairly new so they just started retailing insurance like 2 years ago. Probably why there isn't much feedback on their service. Also they do have deductibles that should be looked at (the size of the deductible depends on the claim). You can find all that info on their website. I have never used this company before but I am insuring my Rezound through them.
you should look into squaretrade as well.
I know this might not be the most cost effective choice and I'm still open to change but... I use Verizon's full insurance coverage (mostly through Asurion) because if I have mechanical failure, I can just bring it to a Verizon store and get a replacement on the spot (at least that's my understanding).
As for loss/theft, I have to depend on Asurion. I have had one experience with them many years ago and it was fine. Although, I don't know my deductible but I'm sure it's high.
That's my arrangement now.
Best Buy has black tie. Kind of like Asurion but no deductible.

Ok, I checked Squaretrade. It looks like $124 for two years for any Android phone. That's $5.17/month. I am paying $7/month so that's a $1.84 savings. It pans out to saving about $44 over 2 years.
That's a reasonable savings but ... it says it pays for 100% of repairs. Where do you get a phone repaired? (I hope that's not too stupid of a question)

Yea, but it also says 100$ replacement fee, which means if you replace it once, your paying the same for 2 replacements through verizon. So technically you aren't saving any money... just food for thought.

Warranty Terms & Conditions
SquareTrade Android Warranties are underwritten by Wesco Insurance Company, an AmTrust Group Insurance Company rated A (Excellent) by A.M. Best.
This is strait from their page. It says they don't cover lost or stolen phones either. I would stay away from them and try with securranty. They seem to be a better deal. Or stay with asurion.
I think that fact that Securranty says they will replace an unlocked phone is a big deal and should be a consideration. I'm not positive but from what I could find the other companies don't say they will do that.
There are a lot of coupons for squaretrade that will save you 30%. Just google it.

I think you might be thinking about warranty service, not insurance. I've never had a problem with insurance replacing something that wasn't covered under warranty service(water, physical damage, etc).
I've gotten Square Trade for other items, never had to file a claim, but for phones they barely cover anything and with their deductible I don't think it's worth it at all. I was going to go without rather than get theirs.
I might sign up for Securranty though. I've never actually lost or broken a phone so I'm hesitant to bother with insurance, but considering this is $650 to replace and I only paid a penny I might do it. Looked into Assurion and seems you have to sign up within 30 days from purchase date, I don't remember seeing that at the time of purchase. With Securranty you have up until 90 days before mfr warranty runs out but if you get accidental damage or loss/theft there's a waiting period for that.
Also, you should be able to find a coupon online for Securranty for about 10-15% off if they are still valid and working.
I spoke to Securranty today, and signed up after speaking to them for about 15 minutes. Two years cost me $150, and they gave me a coupon code for 15% off, bringing two years down to 122. They've got an A rating from the Better Business Bureau, and you can cancel anytime. They told me they'll warranty a rooted phone no problem, and showed it to me in writing on their website. As for deductibles, if there's a warranty issue related to hardware, there's no deductible and you get unlimited claims of this type. Plus, if you have 3 of the same claims for the same problem, you're eligible to have it replaced with a different phone. If you damage your phone, or even fully submerse it in water, the deductible is $50, and you are limited to 3 of these a year. If you lose your phone, or it's stolen, the deductible is $145, and you only get one of these, but that's not a problem for me, since I've never lost a phone. Just some information for those interested.

According to the Securranty website under their FAQ's>Claims FAQ>How much is my deductible?:
Accidental Damage and Handling claims (ADH): $50
Full Immerision Deductible: $145 <<-- Submerse in water
Loss and Theft claims (LT): $145
I do my business at TCC- The Cellular Connection. They have locations throughout the country so I'm sure there is one near you. Being its a third party store, they set their own prices...often offering a discount on a phone if you buy their insurance , which is $99 for two years....no monthly bill. The deductible for a NEW phone is only $40...promised brand new...when I shattered my DINC's screen, I got a brand new DINC2(*fantasizing about what future 4G HTC phone I will get for 40 bucks in the future ). The insurance covers everything, from water damage, lost/stolen/broken screen. Another thing I like about TCC is I can wheel and deal! lol...go ahead, cut em down on a cell phone case!
They also do price comparisons which is cool...I got the nexus on launch day for $185 after telling them about amazon's price...and when I exchanged the nexus for the rezound, they kept the price and simply sent me on my way with the rezound...no restocking fee either :]

I know where a couple of those are around here. I thought they were affiliated with Sprint though. Guess I was wrong. Seems like a good deal though for sure! I might swing in one tomorrow and see what all they offer. It would be nice to switch all 4 of my lines away from Assurion. $400 up front would be nice to cut, especially when I am paying what $6.99 * 4 * 24 = $671. Does it carry over to your next device? I don't plan to have a Rezound in 2014, just saying, lol.

Crazy, there are 6 stores in South Bend/Mishawaka alone, lol.
I work for best buy mobile and can give you some information on our insurance. Gonna give you the good and the bad since no insurance is perfect.
-$9.99 a month
-No deductible ever
-Unilimited number of claims
-Loaner phone issued when phone is out to service
-Covers the battery, physical, water damage and wear and tear.
-Does not cover cosmetic damage (things that don't affect the functionality of the phone, like scuffs or scratches on the device)
2 options when your phone is broken:
A) Do what is called "Rapid Exchange" where a replacement phone is sent. This replacement phone can be a new one, a refurbished one, or a phone another customer returned because they didn't like it, it gave them issues, etc. There is absolutely no way to tell what kind of phone you will get. Your replacement phone arrives within 4 business days, 98% of the time. 9 out of 10 times, the replacement phone has no issues and you can't even tell it's refurbished. But I have seen bad phones come back.
B) You can ask for your phone to be repaired. This can take anywhere from 2-5 weeks, but the good thing is you will get your phone back, not a replacement phone. Keep in mind you do have a loaner phone during this time, but there is no guarantee this phone will even be a smartphone.
Since there is no deductible, Best Buy doesn't cover loss or theft, you have to be able to bring the phone into the store. Also, technically speaking and according to the legal terms and conditions, it is possible for a phone to be "too damaged" to be accepted under the insurance. The definition of "too damaged" depends on who's working and what mood they're in. Also, most best buys won't accept your phone if it's obviously rooted (i.e. de-sensed). Try to restore it before taking it in. Those are my 2 cents, PM with any specific questions.
It is amazing to me that we are on the verge of commercially available flexible tv, tablet, computer screens but no one can produce a phone screen that can withstand a two foot drop. Luckily I had best buy insurance and they are sending me a brand new phone since they have not been out long enough for refurbished ones.

Best Buy insurance on the surface seems great but if your phone is lost or stolen they don't cover it. To me that is a deal breaker. I've had phones stolen or even cracked the screen and just filed and insurance claim and used the cracked phone as a developer device not the greatest thing to do but hell I paid for the phone and insurance every month so whatever. I will keep my sprint insurance. They cover everything best buy does without a deductible besides water damage and a cracked screen.

Thankfully none yet. I have Sprint's TEP which for now is $8 a month but will be increasing to $11. It covers pretty much anything including water damage as I dropped my 3D in a bath while in an Ambien induced haze. Just paid $100 deductible and actually got a brand new phone, still had Hboot 1.40 thankfully since 1.50 was not downgradeable at the time

I think they take effect in four days. $11/mth and $150 deductible on a $549 phone seems kinda expensive for a refurb that probably has issues as well. That's why I am debating between Best Buy's service plan and Sprint's. I've never lost a phone or had one stolen either. I just think after 10 months of Sprint's service, you would have paid $260. The question is can you find a used Evo LTE for less than that? I think so.
Also, I like that BB tries to fix your phone...so, you don't get refurb issues.

So many of these threads started, and 99% of the people who create them will not take responsibility for their actions. Do they really need to make an idiot-proof phone? If you can't take responsibility for your actions of dropping the phone (whatever the distance if it's a foot or 150 feet), you shouldn't make threads complaining that they're too easy to break. Can we lock this thread?
Best Buy insurance sounds nice but after the ordeal my girlfriend went through with them, and other horror stories I've read kept me far away...
Her phone screen broke (Epic 4G) and I finally convinced her to bring it in since she was paying insurance for it anyway. Well they had it for TWO MONTHS, and after frequent calls and instore visits (where they basically told her to F off) they finally got her a new device. Oh, and they gave her a refurb which had a loose screen with a lopsided bezel. The screen started acting up and wouldnt respond to touch and got weird colors within a week. They also lost the battery cover to her phone and they wanted her to pay for it (BB eventually replaced it). Thankfully the second refurb they gave her was fine and she dropped their coverage.
So here is the scenario:
last year i upgraded from the EVO 4g to the EVO 3D. with in the thirty days my phone had weird software issues so i got a brand new replacement for free through the store after talking with a sprint rep. two weeks after that i dropped the phone and the outer metal ring bent. i lived with it until about 2 months ago when i took it off completely. a month after that the phone refused to charge using a regular charger i had to connect wires to the battery and charge it that way.
i went into the store and told the sales lady it wouldn't charge she looked at the phone and said for me to call insurance to get a new phone because even though my issue was unrelated to the missing ring my phone was too badly damaged for her to touch it. (this is the same store where a year and a half ago i went to after i accidentally ran my phone over with my car "dont ask", they replaced it for free then.)
After the store visit i called sprint and spoke to one of their representatives and they sent me out a new phone for free. i noticed that the ring has a different design (i wonder why) but i have had this phone for 2 weeks and was about to go back to store because its a referb, the touch screen sucks and the bottom lights don't illuminate sometimes. right before i was going to bring it in for replacement it got wet and now im told they cant even open it for me so i can dry it off. the phone didn't turn on yesterday, today its okay. but i know i need a new touch screen at the very least as i can see layers of water in it.
to the question:
if i replaced the water indicators
1. the one on the battery
2. the one on the upper right hand corner
would they have to replace a phone that is visibly damaged by water even though the indicators don't show it? or could they just say no based upon what they see?
i know what i would be doing is morally and ethically wrong but i really do not care. so you can save your flaming for someone else.
if this doesn't work im going to have to replace the lcd screen my self.
First, good luck replacing the water sensors. Second, yes, they can still tell there was water even if you could replace the sensors. The board will show visible signs of water damage.
i know what i would be doing is morally and ethically wrong but i really do not care.

It IS wrong. Water damage is not a hardware defect, and it not covered under the warranty. That's something YOU did to your phone, Sprint should not have to fit the bill to fix YOUR problem. That's what insurance is for. It's people like you that make everyone's rates go up.
alright thanks i'm going to replace the screen and what not myself, not because of what i am doing is wrong (i'm replacing the liquid damage indicators too) but i haven't taken a phone apart in a while and i'm looking for a challenge + it's cheaper for me to do that than claim insurance if they decided to check further than just looking at the indicators which they don't most of the time.

Up here in the great white north ( Canada ) we don't have insurance available for our devices, replacement phones yah right, if you need a loner phone you pay $100, the only coverage we have is if the phone breaks itself, so count yourself lucky if you got 2 free phones:beer::beer::beer::beer:

Not when you factor in that you pay an additional 96 bucks a year just to have the coverage plus a hundred dollar deductible and a maximum of 3 claims a year. Just to replace a phone we can pay 125 for used off craigslist

Ok I would be happy to pay 96 bucks for coverage, if I break my phone well what our providers do is count how many months you have left on you contract, which is normal 3 years, and they want about 20 bucks for each month left on your contract plus the cost of a new phone, average cost $ 900 . They bend us over up here and give it to us really good, that's why we all whimper up here.

You can't buy one used? Thats why I use Craigslist... I can get a used 3d for like 125-150. Granted our prices are probably a lower on the used market as well. Plus our contracts are only 2 years....

NOT REALLY BRO. water damage is covered under insurance, i'm trying to avoid making a claim to the insurance altogether. i don't want to pay them 100 bucks for a new phone, the only reason i pay for the insurance is for sprint to fix the phone when it breaks or if it is stolen. which has never been a problem before. i want to know under what circumstances will sprint replace a phone with water damage for free.
I know when i was with Verizon i got a free replacement with a water damaged phone because the damage to the phone was the physical charging port not connecting with the motherboard, and i proved that humidity could have caused the water damage indicators to show that the phone was water damaged. i had to argue for a while but it beats buying a new phone.
the point now is moot, seeing as how i'm going to fix the issue myself.
sucks about Canada though sorry to hear that.
i'm paying 96 dollars a year i should be entitled to a free replacement of the phone. or the company could set up insurance tiers, like car insurance. where you can eliminate your deductible but pay a little more per month for the insurance. i know i'm comparing apple to oranges but that's just my two cents.

Craiglist or kijiji but again people will sell a used phone for $250, everything is more expensive up here, smaller population even though our dollar is at par.

To answer your question, Sprint Will NOT replace a phone that is liquid damage.
Since you dont know how insurance works heres a brief breakdown.
You pay for your insurance and it allows the local sprint stores to
NOT CHARGE YOU to replace a device under manufacturers warranty.
Lost, Damaged, Stolen, Water are all covered by Asurion and you have to pay a deductible to have the device replaced.
I agree with several of these other people who have replied, your looking for a way to defraud Sprint and the Insurance company.
Take some responsibility, you got the phone wet, deal with it the right way and file a claim and pay the deductible.
Wish i worked for sprint so i could flag your account.
I do work for sprint, and saying because you pay 96 a year your "entitled" for a free phone?
Insurance has NEVER worked that way for smart phones. You pay your deductible as you were told when you pay for the insurance protection.
If you don't like it, don't pay an extra 100 a year.

i'm aware of how the insurance works. again i wouldn't be defrauding the insurance because there would be no claim to insurance. i would be defrauding sprint. but again the point is moot i'm going with the cheaper option and repairing it myself.

I'm pretty sure the only reason he was looking to "defraud" sprint was because they sent him a faulty refurb with a bad screen in the first place... It just sucks because he dropped in in water before he could take it back in. Phone still works but the screen is even more messed up now.

You don't know how your insurance works. The Sprint store is part of the insurance. The stuff that sprint takes care of are general warranty issues. Whose warranty is it? HTCs. Part of your 8 bucks goes to asurion to insure against loss, theft, damage, water... the other part goes to sprint to pay for the service they provide you by not making you send your warranty issue phone to HTC for repair. So by trying to claim that this is a warranty issue you are, in fact, defrauding your insurance.
Take some personal responsibility for your actions.

I used to sell phones for sprint, i am aware of how the insurance works.
Refer to the post above yours he basically described my situation in a nut shell.
I had issues with the touch screen's sensitivity and buttons along the bottom not illuminating prior to the water damage.
Water Damage.. no problem.. major physical damage, big problem
I can almost guarantee Sprint would replace a water damaged phone given you replace the indicators. I live on the water and I have defrauded rogers on multiple occasions (dont care, i would gladly burn the place dont and not feel an once of remorse for those wallet gougers)... But unhidable physical damage will never fly in tier eyes.. yourr screwed.. use the insurance you pay for and take it easy on your poor phones

Again, if the board is water damaged, there are many signs that a tech can tell it has been exposed.
My two cents. Sprint is horrible to their customers, asurion is a joke. The phones they send are almost always broken very soon after you get them and being without a phone while they decide whether the poop phone they sent you is poop, is even worse. Yes what he's doing is wrong but more power to him.

and this is exactly why I bought the bestbuy insurance, and not verizons. It cost $1 more, and you just bring in any part of your phone no matter how damaged it is, and they will take it, and ship one to you next-day air, for no extra cost or any kind of deductible. It covers EVERYTHING, even if it was your fault, they take it back, no questions asked. I highly recommend it. I cracked the screen on my gnex. I walked into the store, they don't even power on the device, they just pull out the battery and sim for you to keep, have you sign a form, and you will have your new phone in 1-2 days. Maybe if its new enough or popular enough they might just swap it out in the store, but im not sure about that.

LOL, did they sell it to you as next day fed-ex? They lied!
Try 2-5 business days. I know, I have used Black Tie for two phones now.
If they don't have refurbs available, it can take even longer.
Thunderbolt took 30 days due to them screwing up.
Gnex # 1 took 4 days due to no refurbs available.
Gnex # 2 remains to be seen. I turned it in on Saturday.
They both have their advantages and disadvantages.
Black Tie costs more than Assurion by 2 dollars a month but has no deductible and does not limit returns. Assurion limits to two claims a year.
Black Tie does not cover theft or loss, while Assurion does.
Black Tie typically takes 2-5 days for a rapid exchange, but can take up to 30 days. In that case, they give you a new phone. Assurion does next day delivery via FedEx. Typically if refurbs are MIA, they go new. However they too can delay shipping if no refurbs are available (never had it happen by my mom did). You can also choose to be sent a different device instead of waiting for the replacements to come back in stock.
Assurion phones retain a warranty, whereas Black Tie refurbs do not (their words, not mine).
Black Tie is good for one year tops, whereas Assurion is tied to line and keeps going, and going, and going and...

This so much. I worked at Best Buy for years.
Their selling point is that it's "so quick", It's UPS ground from their 3rd party refurb company which at least used to be in Texas.
So it's 2-5 BUSINESS days.
And man if I had counted how many refurbs came back not working. My own phone went out 3 times (2 times because their refurbs had non functioning parts), my sister's iPhone went out from water damage, came back missing pixels. How does their quality check miss such things?
Best Buy tries to give you a "loaner phone" that they tout, what they don't tell you? It's $50 refundable deposit for a "feature phone", or $100 for a smartphone. What's worse? If you have unlimited, you have to go for their half destroyed "smart"phones circa 2008 LG. Probably won't come with a charger or they'll accuse you of keeping it and make you purchase a new one at around 60% markup to 'replace the one you stole', even if they clearly knew the loaner never had one to begin with. And that was working at a "more honest" Best Buy.
Your phone is shipped in a little box with barely any protective covering, if any sometimes. The usual packaging? Cardboard with tight plastic holding it in place. Would you treat your electronics like this? Well Best Buy does.
Assurion covers loss and theft. Yes you pay $100 deductible, but better than paying $599.99 + tax to replace a (ie: ) 2 mo old phone.
Assurion has true next day (my girlfriend after having her phone stolen, had a refurb literally next day, even on a weekend).
edit: typo fixes

Oh man. I forgot about the loaner phones! They tried to get me with this tiny LG Vortex for my Thunderbolt, and again for my Galaxy Nexus. I was sooo angry. I ended up getting a Thunderbolt loaner (with no deposit) back when the Thunderbolt fiasco happened, but that was because they dropped the ball, and I made a huge stink with corporate. I didn't even bother with the Gnex. Better to go phone-less than be stuck with that junk.
I remember seeing them unpacking my first Gnex replacement too. Just like you said, plastic wrapping on cardboard.
well this makes a good case for people getting a case lol
