Hi xda!
So I just got home from my eurotrip, which was awesome, but I lost my old galaxy S thats been my "daily driver" for the past 2 years.
Im looking to get a new phone asp and the design and performance of the xperia S has got me really interested.
BUT, here's the thing. My old Galaxy S was very root friendly, from what I hear the Xperia S very much isn't..
I would really like a phone with 4.1, do you think sony will upgrade it within a forseeable future? Or is it possible to safely root and custom rom it as I did with my galaxy S?
Also, I know it would be easier buying the google nexus but I was rather dissopointed with the build quality of the galaxy s. I feel like samsung has a lot of catch up to do in the build quality area
Sorry for the wall of text!

I still own an Xperia Play, I plan to buy this soon but flashing roms and rooting is very much alike between the Play and Xperia S, and I believe its VERY VERY hard to brick using root, flashing roms is easy, Ermm I would say this is root friendly because if the latest firmware isn't supported you can flash back to root supported firmware easily.

Yes indeed, try and check the bootloader status. It makes things a lot easier.
You can still root with a locked bl, but it 'can' be a little more tricky. On the same note you sound experienced so it should be pretty straightforward

Just some idea to get started! I've to decide for two days after I get this Xperia U and after unlocking, I feel great flashing kernels and CM Roms. But I was so afraid about warranty also. So how about you guys?

First thing after I opened the package. It's kind of a habit. When I got my previous phones (HTC Desire, Galaxy Note), I installed CM on them before I even tried the stock software.
Before unboxing the phone i already generated the unlock key and unlocked the phone before the first boot, so i think it took less than 2 minutes to unlock and 2 seconds to decide to unlock it

Think it was about 4 months until the stock rom was doing my head in and I decided that CM9 was ready for daily use. Didn't bother me about warranty because it's not void anyway (in the UK at least unlocking bootloader doesn't void warranty).
It took me a good month or maybe more.
At first I was afraid of losing unrecoverable stuff, as everyone kept saying I would no longer be allowed to use sony software (for the record, TrackID and Walkman were the only ones I cared about).
My phone had no warranty, and if it ever had, those rats (carriers) wouldn't take responsability anyways. "Bravia Engine" didn't do anything noticeable to stuff so I though "hey, let's jump the gun!".
Got the code, unlocked it, and I swear it's one of the best things I've done despite all those negative comments
CM9 was still in alpha back then, so I had to work with sony's crap up until FXP announced a stable release. Then I flashed CM and couldn't be happier with it.
I don't own any of those 2012 devices, I own a Mini Pro, but it's all the same. I've unlocked lots of Xperias for some friends of mine.
BTW what's up with sony wiping all of our user data after unlocking the bootloader? Why! It sure made me have a bad time :-/
I've unlocked my Mini Pro as soon as the warranty period ended.
Best thing I've done. It's running 4.2 really smoothly!

Hi,
I have an XPeria U, which I've noticed is pretty laggy. This isn't the future I was promised. I was promised a robot butler by 2013 and instead I have a phone that takes longer to pull up a contacts list than it does to open a notebook and turn to the page with the persons name on it.
I bought this phone unbranded, but there still seems to be a lot of bloatware on it, courtesy of SE.
Is it worth flashing with something that hopefully doesn't come with *checks phone* music unlimited, video unlimited, recommender etc
Or is it just a laggy phone?

I've got an interesting question. Once Kitkat has been officially released by Sony, would obtaining root be fairly easy?
Or would it be a mission like on current 4.3 firmwares where we have to downgrade, root, flash, etc?
I'm still on 4.2 and will not bother upgrading until Kitkat has been released and obtaining root is done by a one click procedure.
If anything it'll be harder to root
And you would more then likely have to downgrade etc

What Jack said
There is a slight conflict here, you want an easy root path, but you want a secure phone that no one can hijack. If there is a one click root tool then there can just as easily be a 'no click' root exploit that you dont even know has been un on your phone and the writer/hacker now has full control of your phone - see the problem?
The way Sony wants us to do it (and the best security model for us and them) is to unlock the bootloader and install recovery to flash our phones - this is what we do now except we do the extra steps of running a root exploit so we can latter restore our bootloader/TA to a factory state

I understand. What you said makes sense. I previously used Vroot to root previously like most others but after hearing rumours that were apparently true, I no longer used it. As you mentioned they may be stealing our imei numbers and taking control over our phones violating our privacy...
Since Kitkat 4.4 is around the corner, I won't bother updating to 290 Firmware. Who knows, we may need to downgrade and flash to root Kitkat.
As long as we have an unlocked bootloader root is easy
hmmm.i remembered that when the nexus 5 came in..they got it rooted fast.since the software securities of 4.4 is almost(if not the same) with 4.3..but who am i to say..im just a simple guy passing through... but hey, we already have a working kitkat rom for ZU..so why wait? *smiling

You're the second swede in here that haven't received 4.3, and since both Norway and Denmark received it a month ago, I'll conclude that Sony hates Sweden Sony and Ericsson did break up after all, so I guess Sony doesn't want to go back there and risk bumping into Ericsson. Awkward.
I assume you've checked PCC for the update, and that you haven't changed your CDA to a country that haven't received the update (a mistake I did).

I have seen lots of people asking for it across the forum, but everytime the answer was no, so I would assume there is no option for that. But Im not 100% sure, maybe someone will come up with solution the main problem would be bootloader which is locked, what makes it impossible to flash amother kernel, and Android kernel is needed to boot android, it would not work on apple kernel.
