(Q) receiving mms through wifi? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, I recently got a international samsung gs II and i didn't grab a data plan yet and i wanna know is there another way to receive mms?

Not proper MMS, no. MMS is linked to your phone number on your carrier. If I remember correctly, MMS can only be downloaded over packet data, not over WiFi (most likely due to some authentication routine). If you want to exchange photos/whatever, use email/Facebook/etc. until you grab a data plan.

[Q] Tmo U.S. HD2 MMS problems

I am having a problem with MMS from my TMO HD2 (U.S.). I have a prepaid sim card in it and use only wifi for internet connection.
I can not send or receive MMS of any kind from my phone. I get the the error message that the MMS was unable to be sent/downloaded. On previous phones (specifically tmobile wing), I had no problem sending MMS with a prepaid SIM.
Can anyone answer definitively if the HD2 has to have a data plan to work? I have read that the hd2 needs a data plan for MMS and that it doesn't need it. just looking for the facts. Also, I don't know if settings for MMS have gotten screwed up or not. Can someone post the settings exactly?

anonymous mms issue

i have t-mobile samsung galaxy s vibrant unlocked to use on my carrier viaero wireless and evertime i try to send a mms is shows anonymous only on mms messages. Anyone have any ideas i contacted my carrier since they sell the I9000 galaxy s and they have the same issue on some of the handsets not all and they told me it might be a firmware issue but they have froyo on all of them, also they said since the phone wont work when u setup 2 apns 1 for mms 1 for internet that could be the issue.

[Q] Possible to toggle Data without affecting MMS??

I got my wife a Vibrant the other day to replace her current non-smartphone. She does not have a data plan. She will, however, be adding the pay per use data to her account so she can sporadically use data on a trip next weekend, but she wants to be able to turn the regular data off (as to not incur charges when she does not explicitly want to use the data) while still being able to use MMS (as she has a messaging plan).
Is there a way to toggle the Data on and off at will but still be able to send and recieve MMS with the regular data off? I have read that APNDroid does not work on the vibrant (and other galaxy s phones), though other people say it does.
The phone is stock Froyo 2.2 and only has one APN (T-Mobile US, epc.tmobile.com). Should I create a separate apn for MMS only and change the regular apn's type to just "internet" from "internet + mms"? Or would that still not work with APNDroid in the way I'd like?
Thanks for any help.
No. Go into the APN setting. At the VERY bottom, there is APN type. Set it to MMS only. That way it will only activate when an MMS is received/sent. That is the same setting you describe in your post.
Be aware that MMS data usage will NOT get charged. Yes, it is technically using data but if your wife has texting, sending and receiving MMS messages will not incur you ANY charges, even though it uses data.
Note though that it's not perfect. Sometimes MMS gets bugged where it fails to download because the phone bugged and didn't establish a data connection. In that case, just go in the same menu and refresh it or go to the market so it establishes a connection and everything will work. Hope that helps.
Source: I have my Vibrant with data completely shut off. I don't pay for data and never have since I bought it. I have wifi most places.

MMS without ATT Data

Hey all,
I was wondering if anyone has been able to disable the AT&T mobile network but still been able to get multimedia messages. From the home screen I push menu, settings, battery & data management, data delivery and uncheck data enabled.
While this does turn off my internet connection to AT&T, I cannot get mms messages from my buddies.
I was able to disable the internet on the htc inspire.
Not sure if this is just phone related or rom related. Im using the alien rom.

you need to be connected to AT&T with data enabled, thats how the message is downloaded lol.
If you're not connected to the ATT network, there's no way they can get a message to you. It's looking for your IMEI/ESN on the network to be able to transmit the information to your phone.
Then how come with my old inspire I could get mms while mobile network was turned off?
I have the 200 MB limit and I don't want to go over it... with the inspire it had an option to disable the internet from att. The only internet I had was with.

MMS needs data connection however AT&T text messaging plan includes data for MMS.
for internet browsing and apps you needs separate data plan. MMS will work (keep your phone's data connection enabled) with regular text messaging plan.

I would be okay with that if the data from the mms didn't count toward our data quota. That is the problem with the mms on our phones.

I am using the Atrix on T-Mobile US and I can tell you that for my carrier MMS data DOES NOT count towards data plan limit.

The data used to send an MMS message does not count towards your data plan quota on AT&T either.
I think you need to enable data using a mms only APN. Sorry, i'm not real good with APNs so i'm not sure what the settings need to be.

[Q] How does MMS over wifi work and why don't other companies support if.

I have been doing some research and apparently the only company that supports MMS over Wi-Fi is T-mobile. I want to know how it works, and more importantly I want to know why other carriers insist MMS must go over their data. I am upset with my carrier because in one breath they say "This plan comes with unlimited picture messaging" then says "but you must have a data plan to send picture messages" AND we will charge you $1/megabyte. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to know this is just plain wrong. So how does it work? Is it a special app? Is is a special kernel? Rom? Please enlighten me.
Thanks

Here is an extract from wikipedia
MMS messages are delivered in a completely different way from SMS. The first step is for the sending device to encode the multimedia content in a fashion similar to sending a MIME e-mail (MIME content formats are defined in the MMS Message Encapsulation specification). The message is then forwarded to the carrier's MMS store and forward server, known as the MMSC (Multimedia Messaging Service Centre). If the receiver is on another carrier, the relay forwards the message to the recipient's carrier using the Internet.[5]
Once the MMSC has received a message, it first determines whether the receiver's handset is "MMS capable", that it supports the standards for receiving MMS. If so, the content is extracted and sent to a temporary storage server with an HTTP front-end. An SMS "control message" containing the URL of the content is then sent to the recipient's handset to trigger the receiver's WAP browser to open and receive the content from the embedded URL.

I'm no expert, but I think the problem is that the store and forward server of your carrier are just accessible over your data connection and not connected to the internet. So you are forced to transfer the data over your data connection.
It seems odd that my carrier would restrict access to its MMSC server to 2G/3G/LTE only. Here are the addresses for (Telus's MMSC)
MMSC: http://aliasredirect.net/proxy/mmsc (seems like just a regular web server)
MMS proxy: 74.49.0.18
MMS port: 80 (just like a regular HTTP server)
MCC: 302 (i don't think this has to do with the MMSC)
MNC: 220 (" " " " " " )
If they are restricting to just data plans that is obviously a way to get money. And I don't agree at all with that kind of policy.

I just looked into the MMS specifications.
The communication between your mobile phone and your carrier (the MMS Proxy-Relay) is WSP, which is similar to HTTP.
The problem is there is no authentification whatsoever in the whole standart, so the only authentification is the source of the request.
In other words it is technicallly impossible to send mms over your wifi connection, because your carrier cannot know that you are the sender of the message.
I assume then my phone identifies itself when it makes a request to the MMSC server? IMEI? Is there anyway to get a log of this communication between my phone and the server? Thanks Very Much for Shedding Some Light on this issue.
Another reason I think the carriers do not allow connection to their MMSC server via wifi (ie the internet) is because it seems to be unprotected. If they were to add authentication to the server then maybe they could open the server up to outside the network traffic. But if you ask me I should be able to choose an independent MMSC server for sending and receiving MMS. Actually I think I recall seeing MMSC servers you can download but imagine they are a pain to set up.
similar question
Since my question is similar to the OP I'll ask my question here. Is there a relatively convenient android app to send/receive MMS over WiFi? Don't care if its my number or some pseudo number generated by the app.

Along with textra and every other app i've tried, wifi mms sending doesnt work. And I'm on T-mobile.
It works great on stock roms with stock sms appwith wifi-calling enabled, even if ZERO cell tower connection, but as soon as I go to another sms/mms app or onto a kitkat rom or something that does not include wifi calling, I cant get a single mms out over wifi.
It does work with Sprint, I have wifi at my workplace and sending big pictures would be instant, only the wifi enabled and 3g/4g would never even turn on. i just switched to ATT and now have a S4 and cannot do it, where as with spring i had a S3 and had both phones active in my hand and saw that with sprint it worked everytime. my S4 would activate 4G to send.. and once done the icon would dissapear but Wifi was active the entire time and it took much longer since my service is limited so it was very clear what each phone was doing!! I want MMS over WIFI !!!
btw both phones using textra app!
