Hi,
I have been using my Asus Prime for several months now without problems. I bought it from another user in May where he had installed a custom rom which I didn't like. After several days of reading I managed to revert to an Asus rom with a build number 9.4.2.21. However now that there is a new firmware for WW version, whenever I try to update, its says I have the latest update!! My Prime is still unlocked if this plays any role.
Any ideas?

Do you know if your prime is rooted? If it is, just install Goomanager from the Play store and have it flash the TWRP Recovery. After that, you should be free to flash whatever Prime ROMs you want, just as long as you follow the instructions in the developers' threads. Personally, I would recommend AndroWook, as it is extremely stable and fast. If you're more adventurous, and willing to put up with some loss of functionality, there are a few pre-release Jelly Bean ROMs floating around as well.

It must be rooted, since I remember using CWM in order to fix it. I also found a goomanager folder in root dire However is there any way to verify that it is rooted? I like to have my Asus as close to stock rom as possible. On the other hand I wouldnt mind any speed increase... I found so far the following 9.4.2.28 roms:

As I said before, the device is unlocked and had the CWM installed.
However why not use the goomanager which seems more easy?

I would recommend using TWRP. It's a bit easier to use and seems to be more reliable than CWM.
As for the ROMs, I would still recommend AndroWook. I used Virtuous, and it's very solid, but AW is just a lot smoother and more optimized. It is a stock-based ROM as well, but there are a few more tweaks that improve the overall performance.

Shall I erase them all?

Those are not actually downloaded; they are ROMs that you have the option of downloading through Goomanager. You don't need to worry about deleting them. As for installing TWRP, I don't actually remember what it is that you do to get it. If you go in the Development subforum here, you can find the TWRP thread with instructions on how to install it through GM. From there, you just need to download the ROM file of your choice, do all the necessary wipes, and flash away.

In the upper right hand corner is the drop-down menu. On that menu, tap on "Install Open Recovery Script." That will install TWRP.
ok, I installed the TWRP and waiting for AndroWook to be downloaded...
My only concern now is whether this is the best rom..

It's the best one I've used. Just make sure to do all your wipes, and you'll be good to go. If you don't like it, you can always do a backup and flash Virtuous.
By the way, if you're flashing a lot of ROMs (or even one ROM) you'll want Titanium Backup Pro. It's well worth the $6 it costs in the market to be able to do batch restores of apps with all their data intact.
I just unlocked mine today and I'm not sure where to go from here. Do I need an SD card? And when I reboot the Prime and see "This device is unlocked" in the top corner I press up and all I get is a black screen similar to sleep of death where you have to hold down the power for like 20 seconds to get a response. What's the deal with this?

In the Dev section, there's a stickied thread with videos on how to do all of this. Please go and watch them.
You need to know, that since you've unlocked your prime, you've completely VOIDED ALL WARRANTY. I only say that because if you're asking what to do, then you're very much a noob and maybe you should have read more before you started screwing around.
Now that's done.
The first thing I recommend doing is rooting your device. You need a PC to do it.

Once you've rooted your device, go to the Google Play Store and install GooManager, it is free.
In goo manager, you want to go into the menu, and click Install OpenRecoveryScript. That will install TWRP, which will allow you to install other ROMs and will change that 'black screen' you mentioned into something useful.
Again, please go watch those videos. I recommend installing Andrwook first, it's a modified version of stock and works great. Also, be sure to go through the NVFLASH thread and do that when you feel comfortable with a more dangerous mod that can save your ass down the line.

Androwook installed just fine. First i wiped the cache and delvik cache and then just flashed the rom. I did it twice since i also tested the minimum and typical installations of Androowook. However i am impressed that all my docs are there and so is my game progress. Is there something i should but didn't wipe?

By the way i backed up the previous rom with twrp. Is that ok?
Well, if you're not experiencing problems, you're probably fine, but it is strongly recommended that you do a factory reset before flashing a new ROM.

Yeah I'm no stranger to Root just on this device. I finally got it into cwm but now when I try to back up I get an error. I have goo manager on my inspire but it always recovers using cwm do you think it will do a better job?

Use goomanger to install TWRP. CWM is not fully compatible with the Prime at the moment for some reason, and you'll have issues.

Okay. Couple days ago, i got my new Samsung Galaxy S II. Fell in love with it. I previously had a Vibrant, but that met an unfortunate and violent demise. On the vibrant I hadn't been doing anything involving roms and such because i'd tried once, and completely fried the phone. LOL.
I managed to root my phone, and from what I've read, I didn't do the best method. What I did was get an unsecure kernel, and flashed that, then used a 1-click root type thing to root it. So one of my questions is, my clockwork mod isn't working, what's wrong with it? I downloaded ROM Manager, and flashed CWM. But when i reboot into recovery, i get the stock Samsung recovery screen. How can I get this to work?
And another question, is about roms such as Cyanogen mod. I really wanna get it. (I wont until I get CWM working, though.) And I'm just wondering. If I were to just go to ROM Manager, and flash cyanogen, would it work, or do i need to do more to my phone to be able to put on custom roms? I've never understood the concept of roms vs kernels vs firmware vs whatever else.
And if it matters, Samsung Galaxy S II, Android 2.3.3, rooted using SuperOneClick.
P.S Anything else that I should considering doing/putting onto my phone? And thanks in advance for halping.

Okay, don't take this the wrong way, but it seems you're a bit lacking regarding knowledge about this phone... It'd pay to do your research beforehand in the SGS2 forum, read the FAQs, etc.
Okay, first off, all I can say is, go back to stock. Go flash a stock Samsung ROM for the device. Then, go into Chainfire's CF-Root Kernel thread, and download the appropriate kernel, and flash it using ODIN. After you've done that, you'll have ClockworkMod, and you'll be rooted. It is recommended that you flash another kernel though, after gaining root, as all the CF-Root kernel does it install ClockworkMod, and root the device. Personally, I recommend SiyahKernel.

Alright, I did what you said. I went to stock 2.3.4, used CF-root. And now about SiyahKernel, what are the advantages of it? And is there something wrong with just staying with the CF-Root kernel?
And as of where I am now, with just root and CWM, would i be able to switch ROMs and such?

With a rooted device you'll be able to flash trough Odin or CMW recovery any rom you like.
Siyah kernel gives you a faster and more battery efficient phone and lets you set your own Voltage/ speed the processor has to use see this for the latest info

SiyahKernel has a lot of advantages and improvements of CF-Root, which provides null, if I'm correct. Go check out the SiyahKernel thread in Original Development for details.
Yes, as stated, you can use CWM by itself to switch ROMs. Just remember that if you're switching ROMs (as opposed to performing a flash to a newer version of the same ROM), to perform a factor reset / wipe data, wipe cache, and wipe Dalvik cache (Advanced > wipe Dalvik cache) in ClockworkMod first.

For a beginninger, I can't recommend MIUI highly enough. You could go with GalnetMIUI, which is a variant, but I personally prefer the official MIUI build. If you're looking for a more, 'pure' experience, go with CyanogenMod 7.1 stable.

So going from my phone to for example Cyanogen, I'd backup in CWM, and Titanium backup (Or does CWM backup like, EVERYTHING?) and then factory reset, flash the rom using odin, and then use titanium backup to get my apps and settings back? orwhat.

CWM backup (called a NANDroid backup), backs up everything. If you perform a NANDroid back, there's no need to perform a backup in Titanium Backup - it creates a full image of your system (the advantage to TB though, is that you can backup all your download apps and settings, then install the new ROM, and restore the backed up apps - If you restore a NANDdroid backup, it'll restore the old ROM, exactly as it was when the backup was made).
So yes, the installation process is, for CWM: copy the ROM.zip to your phone, then boot into CWM recovery. Hit the 'factory reset / wipe data' option, the 'wipe cache' option, and then go to Advanced, and hit the 'wipe Dalvik cache' option. After that, choose 'install ZIP from SDCARD', and choose your ROM.zip. After it finishes installing, just hit 'reboot system now', and you're good to go!

Alright, i got that done. I've tried both MIUI and Cyanogen, and both are working and lookin wonderful. But the problem is I dont get data on either one. I've tried reflashing, rebooting, factory reset. Idunno what else to try. Do you know what could be causing this?

Check your APN settings (should be somewhere in Settings under mobile network or whatever). Look your's up online ('APN settings carrier y, country z), and if they're not correct, add them in.

With CyanogenMod, there's a bit of a story to it, but basically, they're not allowed to package Market, Gmail, Maps, etc. with the ROM, so you need to download a zip file called Gapps and flash it in CWM Recovery, you can find it here. You don't need to wipe anything when flashing this.
Also, build #115 isn't the latest, build #117 is (in fact, there's another, even more current one, but there's really nothing to it), but I don't believe there's any major changes.

Hey, I was having troubles messaging you, since it didn't show anything in the sent box, i assumed it didnt go through. So i guess ill be still asking you on here.
So about Cyanogen, which build is the best? And if i'm going from one build to another, like from 115, to 116, would i still have to do a complete wipe? And any other roms besides MIUI and Cyanogen you recommend? cause MIUI is giving me and couldn't generate md5 errors, and i cant restore to it, and i hate starting off without it set up how i like it. D: and yeah, thanks.

Usually, your best bet is to go with the latest build, which you can get here. If it's stability you're looking for, go with the stable build, instead of nightlies.
Personally, out of all ROMs I've tried, I could only ever stand MIUI and CyanogenMod - but even then, MIUI started to annoy me with little things here and there. I think I'll be sticking with CyanogenMod for awhile. So, I'm not really the best authority on that. Just try some different ones, and see what appeals to you the most
I'm gearing up to unlock and start flashing my prime but i want to learn everything i can about the nuances with the prime as I can.
I've done a quick preliminary search but cant really find any helpful threads here in the prime forum or others.
I've always used CWM on my other devices but i was hoping someone could give me some insight to the differences and benefits of CWM over TWRP or vice versa.
Any information will greatly be appreciated.
p.s. just to be clear im looking for information specific to the TF201 whether one is better for the prime versus the other.
Like you I had always used CWM for all my other devices and I started out using it on my tf201. It seemed to work okay but the nandroid backup feature did not work.. I switched to TWRP, and nandroid now works great.. Honesty I now like TWRP better.

Thank you for your response, im heavily leaning towards using TWRP at this point.
when you say nandroid didnt work, im assuming you are referencing the kernel not backing up, am i correct? so inorder for the nandroid to function properly i would just have to flash the correct kernel while in recovery?
Do you know of a method to revert to CWM if for whatever reason TWRP is just not my preference?
(i know i should run a search, but im doing this during study breaks)

i have always used cwm on all my devices. ive been using twrp on my prime since day 1 (6 months) with no isues at all. i really like the UI as well. plus you can theme twrp to. ive herd of other people have isues with other recoveries.
give it a shot and if you dont like it try another but i think you will like it alot

If you haven't decided already, the easiest way to flash switch between CMW and TWRP is by using ROM Manager (from right off the market) to flash CMW and use GooManager (also from the market) to flash back to TWRP, if you decide to.

I would start with twrp off the bat... I started with cwm but ran into a few compilcations, then I fastboot installed twrp and haven't looked back. There have been a few quirky instances between cwm and cm10 which have been resolved only by installing twrp. Just be aware, you cannot cross backups from one to the other. A cwm backup cannot be restored through twrp and vise versa.

Reading through forums, I have found that many users have problems with CWM and no problems after they switch to TWRP. I have been using CWM few times, but soon I switched to TWRP too. New TWRP also works with SD card - if you have installed AndroidRood.mobi custom bootloader which makes device almost unbrickable (that's what they say )
Did any of cwm users reported those problems to Kouch or ROM manager devs?
If no bug is reported it can't be fixed.

I used to be CMW guy but TWRP is pretty nice even just for being able to name your nandroid backups alone/ It has a lot more options as far as I'm concerned and more reliable too.

The first is, is it necessary to root and flash separately, or can I directly put on the rom since I have CWM? And the second is that the most recent CWM recovery I have found is 6.0.1.1, hosted on pershoot's site. Will using that version of the recovery which is from a different source, interfere with rooting/flashing? For future reference, this is my first time doing anything related to rooting, flashing, or custom rom's, so bear with me, please.

To flash pershoot's builds, you need to use pershoot's CMR.

I have always worked to root my 2 devices before doing anything else...for experience more than anything. However, if the ROM you're wanting to flash is pre-rooted (and AOSP JB is) it won't matter after the fact. Make sure you do a Nandroid backup before you do anything though so you can get back to stock if you EFF up.
Its always good to use the recommended recovery to flash a ROM if the OP contains such a recommendation. That said 5.5.0.4 works nicely. Make sure you follow wipe instructions to the letter. Have fun!

I flashed CWM 5504 and the root for the first time a few days ago. I was nervous as all get out, but it went fine.
But I didn't do any wipes.
Could you expand on your advice, i.e., what wipes should be done and how, or point me to a guide?
I have the US 7510,, official 404 ICS update.

Upon installation of most roms a wipe data/factory reset is required. This does not wipe the sd card partition. To regain app data use an app called titanium backup from the market. Backup your apps first before wiping. Some roms require you to do more than wipe I.e format system wipe cache or dalvnik cache. This is all done in recovery. The instructions for the install process including wipes will be in the OP (original post) for the rom.

I was on the ICS update which I did through Kies. My tab was running perfectly.
I figured it was time to try rooting, so I finally found a guide which was for the official ICS update, not a custom rom.
I flashed CWM 5504, which went fine. I then did the root through CWM, and it also went fine.
As I posted, no wipes, and everything works fine.
Actually, the only reason I want root is to edit one file. It's the one to enable the 5Ghz wifi band.
As for backing up apps, etc., I don't really keep anything on the tab that I worry about losing. About a dozen
photos that I use in Photoshop Touch and a couple of other apps, just for fun.
Music files are on my PC which I can access with ES File Explorer, File Manager HD, and AllShare, all of which
work great. No movies (yet).
I really don't mind reinstalling my apps from the Play Store.

Actually I've been enjoying the heck out of it since I bought it in March.
Went to buy a Kindle Fire for my wife, thought she might have some fun with it.
Browsed the other tabs and got her the GT 10.1 instead.
After setting it up for her, I could see it would be fun, so the next day I bought
another one for me. Glad I did; we both have a lot of fun with them.

If you like stock there are lots of close-to-stock ROMs out there. Task650 is one of those devs for example I would recommend who releases a solid stock experience but without all the factory bloat, pre rooted, etc. Have a look around - you're embarking on a fun (and very addictive) journey!

New to this - I really apologize if this has been covered before but I've been searching all evening and not coming up with a definitive answer.
What's the easiest way to remove a custom recovery (like twrp) and go back to stock? Still on the stock rom, just have custom recovery. I manually deleted a nandroid backup using a file manager from my sd card yesterday, and now when booting into recovery it sits on the twrp screen for easily 10-15 minutes. I can't fathom why that would have an effect on the start up time but that's all I can think of that changed. I've tried re-installing twrp via goomanager - no change.
Is there a way to do so without using usb? I'm curious because the first S4 I had, the usb port went bad after only a month and I was in a panic that I wouldn't be able to get it back to stock (until I finally got it to work long enough to flash it with odin). Really don't want to risk that happening again.
Looking to run some roms once I think I understand at least half of what I'm doing, but trying to be cautious. I'd like to keep twrp but I want to make sure it's working right by loading a clean install of it.

A lot of users are experiencing the lag with TWRP version installed by Goo Manager - (TWRP 2.6.0).
The link below has a flashable zip to version 2.5.0.2, this version seems to be stable and doesn't lag at the TWRP screen for most people including myself.
I would try flashing this and I think it will solve your problem.

Thank you. I'm a little stumped on what to do with the zip now that I have it though and all my searching for "loading recovery with goo manager" just shows the method to load the newer version. Or if you're supposed to load it via pc, what do you use? Odin doesn't like any of those file types.
Sorry if this is a dumb question. Probably just not searching for the right thing.

You flash it via recovery. Put in your sdcard/internal boot to recovery amd use the install zip option. Navigate to where it is and flash away.

Yes, it is a flashable zip, just flash it in the recovery you have now.
I found this post based on the OP's original question, "how to remove TWRP recovery".
I have been flashing rooted ROMs for a while now via ODIN, but am just now starting to foray into the realm of custom recoveries. Before I install TWRP though, I wanted to know how to remove it just in case something ever goes wrong. That is, I've been avoiding the use of a custom recovery so far because if something ever happened to my device, I could just flash the stock ROM, and having already used Triangle Away, Samsung will never be the wiser and would service my device, but with a custom recovery installed, they would be able to see I'm not running totally stock.
So, is there a way to completely return my device to 100% stock after installing TWRP? And if so, how would I go about doing that?
My device is a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 GT-N8013, currently running a root injected stock ROM, 4.1.2
EDIT: I just noticed that this is in the S4 forum, which my N8013 obviously is not, but the answer to my question should be the same regardless, yes?

Thanks Gadget, Hex. TWRP 2.5.0.2 works great. But just for future reference, is the only way to revert to the stock recovery by flashing a stock device image via odin over usb? So if the USB port were to fail entirely, I would be SoL - correct?

Hi, I am in the same boat. Stock standard international S3, but extremely slow. Ram usage on startup is 700mb.
Which rom would you guys suggest that is both stable (no bugs), and fast (using much less ram).
This is my everyday phone, I take a lot of photos, especially the camera should be functioning perfectly.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Edit: Last time I rooted and played around with these things were about 3-4 years ago with my Sony X10 mini. I am slowly getting back into it, reading up on the latest rooting apps etc.
@errolpl: Search in development subforum for 'aroma installer'. Usually these ROMs offer only system apps to choose. 3rd party user apps you'll have to install by your own. You can edit the header with edit-function.
@demozzracy: If you want full camera suport, I recommend NCS-ROM: based on last JB-firmware, but brilliant debloated. So slim, fast, battery friendly and all hardware working. I'm testing many LP-ROMs, but they are primarily newer, hardly better (for S3).

I was extremely new just a few weeks back as well. I must say that my attempts on finding a solution for my slow S3 has been a rather hard and bumpy road.
To help you save some time, here is what I've gathered so far:
Last time I flashed phone firmware, a couple of years ago, it required a PC, a cable and some funky software.
Then when I flashed my S3 for the first time, about a year ago, I started out with Cyanogenmod and used their app+cable installer. I think this is still the easiest way to root the phone, and get started with custom roms. Even if you plan to use some other rom than Cyanogenmod.
When the phone is rooted you can install TWRP, simply done via an app on the appstore. TWRP is recovery firmware that can stay on the phone, even though you flash new roms. (The phone is divided into several separate sections, bootloader, recovery, actual system, and data area.... I don't even know much about it yet.) The important part is that it is extremely easy to flash new roms using this tool, and a micro SD-card.
Simply drop the rom zip file onto the card and flash them. (For some roms you need to flash some "GAPPS" as well. These are the google apps, like the play store etc. If you don't flash them you can't really use the phone for much.)
This is where the real problems start. Finding the right ROM.
The S3 is old, and only supported up to Jelly Bean for my 1GB international version, or Kitkat if you have one of the 2gb versions.
This has not stopped developers in providing both Kitkat and Lollipop to any version of the S3. However... as eager they are to provide the newest coolest features, just as lazy do they seem to be with their testing. (Sorry guys, but someone has to say it.)
So I've gone through some roms now... none of them really good.
The first Official Cyanogenmod I flashed half a year ago. I used this for almost a year.. but the camera would crash constantly, and the phone was not able to display video. For example movieclips on facebook.
Second ROM: Cyanogenmod has also stopped developing for the S3, so a few weeks back I switched to some unofficial version. It seemed to work... camera and video was ok, and everything had the nice Lollipop feel to it.
However MMS did not work. I could receive one and send one, next ones would require a reboot for them to work. The problem was brought up in the ROM Q/A tread, but the answer from the developer was: Sorry I don't use MMS so I don't really see a problem.
Third: Onto some next rom. This one was tagged STABLE. It was far from it. In fact it was even easier to discover that this rom had the same MMS problem. Because the message app would crash immediately when trying to send one.
4th attemt was the same rom, but a different kernel... still the same problem.
5th rom was Blisspop... Wau, this was beautiful! Cool webpage, Cool animations.... it was just too bad that the site is dead, and that the rom can't even run for 24 hours without the android keyboard crashing 25 times or so. Also Blisspop has OTA updates... the only problem is that it constantly says that there is a new version for the S3.. but the download fails. Apparently some bad change to the website caused this, and apparently this problem has been going on for 3 months without anyone bothering to fix it.
6th was Archidroid. The second to top ROM for the S3. It looks cool, and has many features... but just as other Lollipop ROMs, sending MMS's without error is not one of them....
I've really tried everything. People always says that the MMS problems are due to APN's not being set up correctly, doing some reboots etc.... but trust me... I've set them up so many times you wouldn't belive it.
7th. After reading this thread and rp158's recommendation of NCS-ROM I'm now running that one. Without a single thing being set up, I was able to send and receive MMS's right away.
However... now I'm stuck back at the ugly kitkat look, and Touch wiz.
tl;dr;
So what do I want to say with all this?
Get root and TWRP and start playing around with ROMs
Lollipop does not look like an option for the S3, at least not right now
Don't let yourself be fooled by nice webpages or [STABLE]-tags, or comments that say: "I've been running this since yesterday.. it's 100% stable!"

As I said in my post, I am ok with the KitKat look, as long as it is stable, I am always on call at work, and cant afford constant phone crashes.
I am going to try the root/twrp to NCS rom in the next couple of days

It's 5 months already that im using S5 Sensation rom for i9300/9305 ( 4.4.4 kitkat). This rom has S5/Note4 features and works great im satisfied. No problems so far, no bugs, etc ^^
It comes with AROMA installer and lets you to choose which apps you want to install and which not.

https://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager here is the latest CWM versions for smartphones, but its .img file and u cannt flash it directly from Odin. U need to make .img into .tar.md5 odin flash-able file by some tools, or flash it via adb shell, etc.

2. Put ROM on your SD card
3. Enter recovery mode
4. Perform a full data wipe(except you're running previous versions of back-to-n00t)
5. Flash ROM
6. Flash SuperSU

yeah this means doing a "Factory reset", must be done throught Recovery mode, wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache.
Put ROM on your SD card, then enter Recovery Mode by pressing Home + Volume UP + Power buttons and ull have smth like:
Install Zip -> Choose Zip from /Storage/Sdcard (External SDcard) , Search for ur ROM file and start flashing :X
Flash the SuperSu .zip file same way as flashing ROM.
