Gsm/Wcdma/Auto what is your choose? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Which setting do you use?

Use GSM only when you don't need fast internet eg. Whatsapp, GTalk.
WCDMA only you need fast internet like when browsing/downloading.
The best way is to get used to switching quickly between the two as necessary to get the best battery life. You can do that through a toggle app like Notification Toggle. CyanogenMod and AOKP have built in toggles.
If you don't want to go through that i.e. constantly switching between them, then keep it on auto mode at the expense of battery life.

at home or at same place, wcdma only. travelling, auto.

BBC usually .

Auto. I dont bother to change. Could it do that much on battery time?

yes, 2g can roughly double your standby battery life when sync is enabled. However since Cm10 Preview 9 my phone has approx 2 days of life with medium usage on hspa and sync enabled without apps like Juice Defender so I don't care anymore.

You could even minimize the risk of loosing the network. There are some places where the 3G isnt usable or has low strength. Switching to 2G/GSM will help..

How do you improve battery on GB ROMS???

Question for all GB users, which is a pretty high number here. I ran MIUI Lithium and loved it except the battery was pathetic. I can deal with generally bad battery life since i came from an HD7 but it got out of hand. Anyway since there are a lot of GB roms out there and pretty active i suppose a lot of u found a way to handle it better. How do you u GB users get the most out of battery on a GB ROM? (ROM, Kernel, tweaks, etc.)
please share your setup since it can help a lot of others that want to manage battery better

Try using the Bali-CM (For CM7/MIUI/OMFGB) kernel. It was designed around improving battery. I'm currently not using it however when I did I had much better battery life when I was... Also remember to undervolt, as that should further increase battery life without loss of performance. "Screen off" profiles in overclock apps like SetCPU also help in battery conservation.
An app that really helps battery life is called Juice Defender Plus. You should try it out! Here's an overview of the app posted by "Woodrube" that should help you get started...
This is how the JD Plus works (no need for JD Ultimate b/c we don't have many of the functions it supports. I just copied this from another thread the OP started awhile ago and I was trying to helps him out there.
If you set it to custom, the go into the settings tab on the right and then all the way at the bottom, there is two buttons to push, The first in Interactive which will pull up Juice Defender for up for any app that isn't already configured and the other is Configure Apps. This is the one that you can customize on an app-to-app basis where if you are no using an app and the screen is locked, it kills the radio/data traffic for that app.
Say you are listening to IHeartRadio, this you would want either Enable or Enable/off (which means the screen will be locked but the radio/data will be working). Now take the browser. It you are not using the browser, then you don't need it transmitting data right? So you would set that one to Enable (which means that it will only enable data traffic when that app is being used).
Juice Defender only works when the screen is locked, don't forget and all widgets are battery drains b/c all they really are is a monitoring app and if it is tied to something like FB or G+, then that data will be running constantly.
Examples:
Gmail = Enable (not enable/off b/c then it will keep your radio/data open)
Beautiful Widgets = Enable/off
mClock/Clockr = Enable/off
Angry Birds = Disable (with this and something like Adfree, no more ads in Angry Birds even though the ads are embedded in the .apk)
SMS/MMS = Enable or Do Nothing (why would you push disable)
Enable = Radio/data on when app is in use (front)
Enable/off = Radio/data on for background apps (when screen is locked)
Disable = Disables radio/data traffic completely when that app is running
Do Nothing = What is says.
I have been using JD+ for over a year on 3 different phones and have noticed a considerable difference in battery life, even on a crappy Motorola phone. Just takes some time to figure out YOUR settings and what YOU like. I have also used it on Stock kernel and had no problems either.

Under settings I have
Mobile and Wifi are both set to Enable,
Options>Auto Disable,

Night>Enable :12am6am (b/c I am asleep but if I am on, user takes priority),
Apps>Enable;
Configure>Interactive.

Also, don't forget that our Vibrant's screens are huge power drainers. Keeping it on a lower brightness level helps save a lot of battery. Hope this helps!

By the way, whenever you flash a new rom you are going to want to do a battery re-calibration. This will help excessive battery drain. However you only need to do it once when you flash a new rom! Use this app to easily do a re-calibration.... http://www.google.com/search?gcx=c&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=battery+calibration+nema
Here are some screenies to give you an idea of how JD+ can be set up. Noob, thanks for the tag, buddy.
+1 on the screen settings too. Plus when you are pulling on-line music for extended time and notice the phone getting hot, it isn't all the processor, it is the screen that is causing some of the heat. Hence my enable/off for MLB or Tune-in in the shots below.

No problem, bro.
Which version of Lithium were you running? Try Prime 360 (Miui 2.3.7). With heavy usage, I usually get around 16-20 hrs. With light usage, I had 29hrs with it. Let your battery drain, fully recharge and you should have remarkable results.
I tried NB-360 ROM, it had decent battery life, with many battery saving features included, but it didn't compare to Prime if you need longevity out of your battery. It currently uses the Neo R18 Kernel.
Let me know how it goes.

So my Setup is basically running CM7 (with 2.3.7), and having a kernel which supports something called "undervolting"
right now, I have a kernel called glitch kernel.. which basically gives me an app where i can set my own custom voltages (like undervolting it -50 mv from the original voltage). THis can help save TONS of battery, but always refer to your kernel guide on how low to set the voltage.
We don't want any bootloops or bricks now do we
I also use an app (in conjunction with my kernel) called screen filter. This dims the LEDS inside youe phone individually so it saves a ton of battery.
i get 1.5 days on full charge listening to music and going on the internet constantly
thanks a million guys. im currently running cm7 stable and flashed glitch v13 kernel. set leakage to medium (honestly still dont understand the difference very well) and undervolted like you guys recommended. ill see how battery treats me.
^^ BTW i had Lithium 11/11/11 update with default kernel
If i see a significant increase in battery, ill give MIUI a go again with Prime since it seems to have good battery. Ill keep u updated, thanks again
Edit: quick question. is it true that the solid white colors still kill much more battery with our screens? or was it mostly a first gen amoled issue?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
update: glitch v13 with undervolting really did the trick!!! after a full work day on which on a GB rom my phone would be begging for mercy with about 20% remaining more or less, today i finished with just over 70%, and that was after i realized that the undervolting settings did not stick after boot when i unplugged it and i applied it again (my phone was at 90% when i did this)
speechless...

[Q]cpu tuner app

i'm new to rooting running a droid razr is anyone running cpu tuner and can you recomend settings to maximize battery life ?i am a light to moderate user living in an area that swiches from 3g to 2g alot, thanks
Radio signal has nothing to do with CPU, but perhaps you mentioned it because of battery life.
As long as you have a kernel that supports it, undervolting should help with your battery life a bit. I'm not sure if your app allows for it, but if you can set a profile to undervolt with the screen off. SetCPU had this option (as well as the ability to set profiles for other scenarios). I highly recommend purchasing SetCPU, but it is available for free for XDA members, just search for it.

Wifi

I have 12 mbs internet at my house. When I connect with my phone and run a speed test I get around 6 mbs. At the very same time with my computer I get 11 mbs. I have best wifi performance checked. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks too.

Ive heard people report that best wifi performance is a battery hog and doesnt help..
also is your using speedtest.net app try to select different locations for it. I have 3 servers in Dallas that i can choose from, and occasionally 1 of them gives me slower then normal readings.

[Q] reccomended Rom, kernel, mod or configuration for best battery life

hello everybody
the question is simple..... i have a E790 and i want a Rom, kernel, mod or configuration for best battery life... any suggestions?
Slick V3 plus MEs kernel. Lower min clock speed and use badass governor. I've never had anything better. I'm currently using MEs EG8 ROM, which I like better, but battery life is slightly less then when I used Slick.

Best configuration for extended battery life = power off when not in active use.
Not trying to be a jerk here, but while stating that question is simple, the answer most certainly isn't. There are a huge number of factors that play into battery life, and you haven't provided any info at all to us to provide good answer.
The answer depends on how you use the device. Do you need extended idle time but not high performance? underclock, undervolt, freeze all your background apps. Do you have lots of stuff running in the background? Try greenify paid with xposed features. Do you want the most possible screen on time? drop your brightness as low as you can stand it. Run in Airplane mode. Are you in a crappy service area? Turn off cell radio and use Wifi only.
We don't know what you need for connectivity, or how you use the device, or what apps you run, or anything else. We need tons more info to try to chase battery life. We don't know what will constitute "acceptable" performance, to you, when down-tuning processor speeds and brightness and things. These are all things you need to experiment with to find what works best for you.
In general, I've found that for my use-case, the new 4.3 ROMs are marginally better on battery life than prior versions. I typically get about 4 hours screen on time, with around 20 hours up-time, and minimal phone calls (15min per day or so) and end up having 15-20% battery left when I put the phone on the charger. In moderate use, I look for wakelocks to be roughly twice my screen on time. I don't run much processor intensive stuff, the majority of my awake time is spent at minimum clock speed.
Min screen brightness

Min screen brightness, lower timeout, eco mode, task killer, data off and airplane mode at the office (or school or whenever you use "silent mode" instead)

Be very careful with task killers. If you try to kill stuff that auto restarts, you will end up causing battery draining start / kill loops. In general task killers haven't been necessary since gingerbread.

As stated before, the 4.3 roms seem to have better battery life then the previous versions.
Certain apps can help with battery life as well. "Tasker" can be setup to disable functions when not needed.
"SetCPU" can be used to setup profiles to change min/max frequencies and change governors when certain conditions are met... this can also be done with Tasker but requires a good understanding of Tasker functions.
"Greenify" is also a good app. It will hibernate apps that you choose. This can prevent certain apps from running in the backround until you actually use them.

Kernel Confusion
Dear Concern,
m using AT&T LG Optimus G (e970), i just rooted my phone and unlocked my bootloader. the confusion m having ritenow is
m about to install the new custom rom in my phone but m confused about the kernel thing that ppl used to talk here .. my current software information is
Android Version :: 4.1.2
Kernel Version ::: 3.4.0
Software Version : E97020J
Can anyone guide me if i need to flash kernel while installing the custom roms *4.4.2*, and what are the risks?
is it necessary to flash kernel or not ??
Regards.
Moiz
Its not necessary to flash separate kernel..custom ROMs come with embedded kernels sometimes modified from existing kernels, such as mizry's AK kernel...flashing separate kernels are optional

[Q] ROM with the least battery consumption?

The title says it all, lately I have been having battery problems. I have removed most of the apps I had, been using deep sleep, and I kill all running tasks. I think its my ROM.
I am running Pacman 4.3
There are WAY too many factors at play when it comes to battery life to really narrow it down to a "best ROM". Keep your screen dark, turn off location services and data when not using them, avoid poor wifi connections in settings, set screen timeout to shortest possible, etc...
Do your best at minimizing battery loss. Keep in mind, this is a small computer. It WILL suck a lot of battery. There is no magic app to give you days of use. The ROM you run really won't make much of a difference. It's the services and how you maintain your battery that will.
In my experience, Houstonn's 4.3 PA and stock 4.4 builds have been the lightest on battery.
Though, At this time, Any 4.4 is good.

I second the fact that houstonn's 4.4 AOSP build is the best battery performance I've seen.
Have you tried using greenify or better battery stats?

The two biggest battery consumers are the screen and the data radios. Anything you can do to decrease y the battery usage of those two will give you the best battery life.

To that end, an app like JuiceDefender configured to manage the days radios can go a long way to extending battery life.

I flashed SlimKat 4.4.2 beta 1.6 WEEKLY and the battery has been outstanding. I use JuiceDefender Ultimate and lower screen brightness along with limited connectivity when the screen is off. Unplugged for 8 hrs and used for at least 4 today. I'm still over 70%!
I haven't had any bugs, random reboots, or force closes.. SlimKat is a great build thus far!
