I am moving from a Bionic to a RAZR MAXX. I may dump it quickly for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus or HTC Rezound, (as those were my other free replacement choices), but we'll see. For now, the MAXX is in the mail and I want to be ready when it arrives. Here are the initial questions I have off the top of my head:
When it comes to hacking/rooting/custom ROMs, is the Razr MAXX (XT916) the same as the regular Razr (XT912)? In other words, are the processes and available ROMs the same, or do I need to only use files specific to the MAXX?
Should I use Safestrap 2.0 or a different Recovery? I am so used to Safestrap but will not use it if established MAXX users say not to.
The Bionic is still an 'ICS-hopeful', and users are having to flash ICS leaks (unofficial) to get it, but I understand that ICS on the MAXX is officially released. What's the best custom ICS ROM? For me the word "best" means no MotoBlur, no custom launchers (i.e. most vanilla)
Thanks in advance for the boost. I want to hit the ground running when I get the phone.

1. Never heard of an XT916. Both the Maxx and regular Razr are model XT912. They're identical in all aspects except for the larger battery and the shell differences that allow the larger batteries. All XT912 files work for both devices.
2. I use Safestrap and I recommend it.
3. Both XT912 devices have received the 211 OTA. If your phone does not have it on start up, check for an OTA. We also have a 215 leak floating around that updates the kernel and installs a new (better) 4g radio. This leak IS fastbootable back to 211 so flash at will. The fastboot file is available for download so I recommend getting it for safe keeping.
As far as "best" rom, that's a matter of opinion. I flashed the Liquid rom a couple days ago and LOVED it. Unfortunately, just like all AOPK and CM roms I've flashed, I had issues with the phone and data connection. Those two are a must for me so I always nandroid back to iKream (blur based). Maybe you'll have better results.

Great, thanks for the info. I wonder why the term 'XT916' is all over the internet then for the MAXX model...confusing
-edit-
From some quick Googling, this is what I found:
XT910 = Razr (GSM)
XT912 = Razr (CDMA/LTE)
XT913 = Razr MAXX (GSM)
XT916 = Razr MAXX (CDMA/LTE)

Hmmm....maybe they changed the model # designations or something. I have a Razr Maxx (Verizon) and my model # is XT912. Obviously I'm on the leaked update and iKream rom but it's showed XT912 for as long as I've owned it.

Isn't the model number based on the ROM being used? It would stand to reason that if all the custom ROMs are based on the original Razr, then they'll say "XT912" instead. I'll see what mine says when I get it - they said it is shipping with ICS 4.0.4.

I'm pretty sure it's not or it would say my device is a Razr instead of Razr Maxx. Also checked with a buddy using a completely stock, never flashed, OTA updated, VZW Maxx. His model is XT912 as well.
The fastboot files for Razr's and Maxx's has XT912 in the title. I still stick with original philosophy. Unless Verizon or Moto changed something very recently, both devices should have the same model #.

As long as I can use Razr files that's all I need to know. Just found it interesting that there were all those model numbers for the same thing. All Bionics are XT875, never seen any others.
Well...after even more deliberation I called Verizon and told them I'd rather have the Nexus. They had already shipped the MAXX, so they went ahead and shipped the Nexus also and just said to return the one I do not like along with my Bionic when I have made a decision. I guess I will have both phones at once for a couple days, not sure if that will help me decide or not, since you really have to use them to know which is better but that's the deal. I am still on the fence, but leaning toward keeping the Nexus now - I can send back whichever one I don't want though since they're both coming now.

Nexus is nice because of the unlocked bootloader and JB roms but you'll need an extended battery or 3. I upgraded to the Maxx from a Nexus and never looked back.

The battery sells the phone for me. My Nexus would die before lunch time. I literally had 3 extended oem batteries. Then the Verizon belt clip case wouldn't fit with the slightly larger extended battery so I took a dremmel tool to the stock cover and hollowed it to fit the extended battery.
The roms where nice. I had 6 roms booting at once with Boot Manager. Since they're built from source, most/all roms/customizations simply work. Unlock/relock/flash at will. For a hardcore modder, a Nexus is the way to go. But over time I grew tired of carrying a battery in my pocket, leaving one at work, and the stock battery at home for a backup...or being tied to a cord all day.
I can't tell a difference in the screen and the Maxx is pretty damn slim as-is. I made the switch right around the time the first ICS leak came out so jumping from ICS to ICS was a nice switch. I like the customizable soft keys of the Nexus but I had a certain set up I like. Not all roms would have the settings to move/add/remove buttons like I like so I was constantly relearning the softkey configuration. Or even worse, if a rom didn't have the option for a menu button, I would have to search for it in different apps/pages (it moves). So I like the stationary soft keys of the Maxx.
It's all personal preference I guess.

Well, I've gotten everything I need to decide. Both the MAXX and Nexus are in the mail to my home now as well as Otterbox Commuter cases and ZAGG screen protectors for both. Extended battery (2100mAh) + back cover for Nexus is also on the way.
I guess I'll have one set of accessories to re-sell once I choose the other.

My main like is the offline speech to text. Don't have to have a signal now for it to translate what you said to text. I use that in every app, since I hate typing on the keyboard. It is always accurate when it hears me, but on ICS it needed the network. Now it can do it offline, I love it - I can speak out a long paragraph without any spelling errors in an email in 2 minutes! Also, the camera app is much better. Swiping back and forth between photos/live camera is MUCH improved.
I flashed CM10 on my Maxx yesterday. Pretty solid build. As soon as we get data working fully (less drops), I'll use it daily. For now it's a fun dual boot to play with.

Will the RAZR MAXX have the exact same software as the RAZR?
Meaning, can we use:
1. RAZR fast boot files?
2. RAZR Root tools?
3. RAZR ROMS already out?
Bump. I think I'm going to take back my galaxy nexus and get the maxx, mostly because of the battery. Really curious to know this as well.
Was going to return my original razr, but I didnt because there was no solid release date for the razr maxx, and I figure smetime in the furture they will release the razr maxx battery( or something like it) for the razr that will come with a bigger battery and a new back for the phone. At least I hope something like that happens. Although I still get great battery life on my original razr with moderate usage. So it was not imperative that I get a phone with a bigger battery.

There's absolutely nothing different about the MAXX other than the battery. This is what's had me feeling like existing RAZR owners are kinda entitled to the MAXX. I LOVE this beast, and don't have any battery life issues, but would like the updated battery too...

I purchased the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx on Friday, cause there were no regular Razr's left. I paid the same price as you would pay for a regular Droid razr. What's different. The battery does last alot longer i mean really alot longer. I already rooted my phone with the newest OTA update. All files that can be used on the Razr can be used on the Razr Maxx....fast boot files, ROMs and also Razr tools. Nothing else is different though except the battery life. I purchased it on Friday and did a full battery charge with a stock rooted ROM no battery tweaks and moderate usage. I charged it up again for the first time early Monday morning around 5am. So i say thats not bad especially since i was running 4g and no battery tweaks ie. setcpu etc.
Appears to be the same to me, before the software update the Droid Razr Maxx even says "Device Name: Droid Razr" in the About section (after the update the Maxx was added).
I received the phone, updated to 2.3.6 and rooted with no problem.
I really like the battery life with 4G on, absolutely love it with 4G off (it lasted me 3 days of solid use when I opt'd to try out 3G only, and I still had plenty left.)
Who's gonna pony up for the D4 tomorrow?

Meh. Spec wise it's nice, but it's really just a RAZR with a keyboard. Battery isn't that impressive, around 1800 mAh IIRC (Dx2 stock is 1500), and with 4G LTE this'll be another charge in the morning, charge in the evening type phone (if you last till the evening) AND the battery isn't even removable!
Plus there's always that bootloader issue and the fact it isn't running ICS, which means it'll be getting that after the razr, xoom and bionic.
No thanks. I'm good on Moto devices for a while anyway.

I've got about 6 months left on this phone and then I'm done with Moto if they haven't changed their ways (which I don't see happening).

There's not a lack of ROMs. In fact, we have a lot of ROMs:
Liberty - although it appears development has stopped
Molten - Magma is supposedly on the horizon
CM7 - another release is forthcoming in a few days per DZK
MIUI - still a work in progress
CM9 - not released yet, but DZK is working on it
Eclipse - Nitro is constantly working on this. 2.0.4 was just released.
So, lack of ROMs isn't an issue with this phone. I'd say we have quite a lot to choose from.
What has us upset is apparently, no ICS and no unlocked bootloader. The latter is a big issue because they promised they would start unlocking bootloaders. To this date, there is just ONE phone that has a bootloader unlocked and it hasn't been released yet - the Droid RAZR Developer Edition and who's to say whether or not Verizon will release this phone onto their network. My feeling is no AND I don't want to purchase ANOTHER Motorola phone just to get my bootloader unlocked.
That is really the ONLY reason I'm not going with Moto anymore. I'm also looking into getting off of Verizon. Problem is, I really need the coverage and no other carrier has the coverage I need in the areas I go to and I must have my coverage, period. So, I'm probably stuck with Verizon, so I just need to see if I can find a phone on Verizon that has the bootloader unlocked. Supposedly, HTC has been allowed to unlock some of their bootloaders on Verizon, so I'll probably go that route.

When I first got my phone I had a choice between the Droid X2 or the Droid 3. I've never had an android phone before so I didnt know what the differences were as far as ROMs and such. So the only reason I didnt get the Droid 3 is because of the slide out keyboard. Not that I had a problem with a slide out physical keyboard (I DID have a Pre Plus before this), I would just never use it. I dont like using my phone in portrait mode. I dont know why. It just doesnt seem comfortable to me. So I wouldnt get a phone with a portrait slide out keyboard, which means I will probably never get a phone from the Droid series. Im fairly happy with my DX2. But then again, with this being my first android phone, I dont know what its like to have an unlocked bootloader. My next phone will probably not be Motorola just to see what other phones can do.

Ummm hell yes, it does! WasabiWa83 has a Rezound (previous Droid X2 owner) and raves about it. It is quite possibly one of the most amazing phones I have ever seen. Unless something better comes out in the next few months, my next phone will be a Rezound.
P.S. - WasabiWa83 also does custom signatures, wallpapers, posters, etc for phones/computers if anyone is interested! I've had him do some for me (he actually created my sig, my phone's homescreen wallpaper, and my computer's desktop wallpaper), and his work is amazing, whether you want something big or small.
After 6 months with this device I have lost faith. The lack of software fixes to issues that are important to me have caused me to become frustrated and abandon the device. Too bad. I thought it had potential. Goodbye RAZR forum. Thanks to those that assisted me.

I, too, am curious about what software issues you are having. The only software issue I have come across so far is compatibility with Google Voice, but that is solely a Verizon thing and applies to all VZW Android devices, and there is a relatively easy workaround.
I have been running Eclipse 1.3 since purchasing my Razr, however, and the Eclipse ROMs are known for being very stable and better than stock. This may be why I haven't come across any software issues.
Or, on the flip-side of that last comment, all of the custom ICS ROMs have known bugs. Are you running a custom ROM, or stock Moto?
I too am on the fence about buying a razr. I found one locally for 250 box and all. I won't lie I'm a little worried that I might not like it because lack of support. And after seeing this post I leaning towards not getting it. What didn't you like about it?

I have a regular RAZR. To be frank this is my tipping point:
1. Bluetooth streaming sucks. This is a big deal to me. I have "stutters" when streaming music to my car stereo. It wasn't present with the Atrix I had before. I updated my deck's bluetooth firmware. No improvement. This likely a software radio fix required.
2. Bluetooth sound quality is tinny. Using my phone with a bluetooth device makes sound quality tinny. This got worse lately.
3. Lackluster battery life. This is a hardware limitation.
4. Poor wifi performance. This again is likely hardware.
5. ICS would be nice. But it isn't why i want to rid of it. It took up to 2 weeks ago to get an OTA to 2.36. That fix in my opinion improved nothing.
The Maxx addresses the battery concern i had. But it doesnt address my other concerns.
I honestly find this phone to be a step backwards from the Atrix it replaced. Too bad. This is a device that looks amazing. It just is too quirky for me.

Agreed. I can honestly say this is the best phone I've owned or seen. (Maxx, I wouldn't touch an OE Razr for any money)
Just chipping in my two cents here, if anyone wants to know.
I picked up my Razr two days ago from Verizon. I had a local carrier that did NOT work at all when I moved, and I needed a new phone. I was pretty attached to my xperia play, but not enough to buy another, plus, I wanted a 4G phone. I kinda searched around the forums at some of the others, and eliminated all but the Rezound, the Thunderbolt, and the Razr. A friend of mine had the Thunderbolt, and had good things to say about everything but the battery life, and a friend of his was absolutely in love with the Rezound. The Verizon rep, however, was absolutely in love with her razr, and gave me 100 dollars off on it, so, being cheap, I took it, opened the box, went to XDA, and realized... there are no ROMs for the CDMA Razr. Couple of seconds of freaking out, and I stumbled on droidrazr's website, and got it running with an AOKP/Axi0m kang, and then with Gummy. The device is wicked responsive, the signal quality with Verizon is second to none, and pretty much everything is perfect with the world (though I've found the device is easier to hold upside down in certain situations) I don't know of the google voice issue, unless you're talking about the voicemail integration, in which case its no issue at all, as voicemails come straight to your GV inbox. My last Moto was a Backflip, and I swore never again to Motorola.... now I'm glad I went back on it... though battery life could use a little oomph... good thing I have an external pack.
GV is pretty easy to fix. I use it as my voicemail. Can call it by pressing 1 or open the app and listen to my VM. Sorry off topic but an easy fix

I have a JVC r80bt and bluetooth streaming never has had a hiccup. Connecting and pairing happen quickly from car start- up. Perhaps it is your deck's bluetooth adapter, or bluetooth version.
On the eq, again mine is pretty spot on. I
noticed bass was a bit saturated, but eq that out.
Wifi performance never noticed issues, but ics could alter performance if they tweak hardware drivers.

I love this phone. I concur with these his/her people. Go buy an iphone where you dont control your software. Apple does.

Can't blame you. RAZR is the worst high-end Android phone I have ever used - and I've used a lot more than I've owned.
Given how badly Moto screwed everyone with this device - first by releasing the MAXX so quickly after the original, then by refusing to unlock the bootloaders, then by releasing a completely separate 'developer edition', and finally with the delayed release of the ICS update, I am honestly surprised there are so many Motorola apologists. Bizarre.
Even more bizarre is how much I love the Electrify I downgraded to when I couldn't stand the RAZR's terrible battery life and nasty, yellowed screen any longer. Ho-hum. At least the Chinese 4.0.4 release is pretty good.

1.) No issue with mine. I'm using poweramp. I used all of last week. I just ordered a new stereo for my car so I can stream.
2.) Haven't tried it
3.) I really don't get many calls on my phone, but use it for everything else. Battery last all day majority of the time. Once in a while I'll only make it 8-10 hours before I have to charge it.
4.) I get great WiFi (Pic was taken before I went to ICS)

5.) Running the leaked ICS. I am running ICS on my old Fascinate and my A500. was happy when I could install it on my Razr..
Oh, guys, re: bluetooth streaming, it doesn't suck. Quite the contrary. Gave it a good testing over the weekend. RAZR is one of the first phones to support apt-X, aka lossless bluetooth streaming up to ~320k. Recommend trying it with a BT4.0 headset if you've not already. Bests the One X quality-wise when using apt-X, too.

The only real diff is the Maxx has a huge battery. You'll love that feature. Software is the same. Some rather minor size differences due to the bigger battery. I prefer it. Always thought the RAZR was to thin anyway. Maxx is perfect!
Seems lately between the 3 forums i frequently visit (all the time) that not much is going on for our devices anymore... Getting very bored with this device.... Scroll thru XDA and every other thread is Samsung!!! ^_drooling_^ Put the RAZR to bed? **Probably time yes** Any unique suggestions, ideas would be an inspiration for XT912 CDMA. Bout the most entertaining app i have found would be "Hangouts" for the Video Calls of course... Rooted, Safestrapped, played with nearly every ROM i can boot.. Scripts are not doing it either.. One custom KERNEL to play with.. BIG THANKS TO MY BRO @dtrail1 for his endless commitment JBX-KERNEL.. (and everyone involved) "running 6-24-13 Hybrid nightly... Smooth yes" Gotta Say PAC-man is by far my favorite along with the crimson cobalt themes.... ANYONE ELSE DOING ANYTHING AMAZING WITH XT912 CDMA???

I feel ya... my droid 4 got that way and then my ole lady broke my USB port off trying to plug it in.... I loved that phone but inside I smiled and grabbed a RAZR ... then grew bored of it and around that time it slipped out of my pocket and my daughter found it dropped it and broke the screen... now I'm sitting on the RAZR M scared to grow bored of it i havent unlocked the boot loader and flashed anything yet (as it seems my growing board of it is latterly the death of it) but this thing seems to be pretty quick... a bit smaller then the other two but I'm in love... I know benchmarks don't really mean anything but its pushing 5500 stock nothing froze or disabled... there there bro there there... I really feel ya

I'm enjoying the Carbon ROM with my Razr. Lots of customization and a healthy community on Google +. Haven't tried pacman. Enjoying jbx as well.

I have an HD MAXX and I've become bored with it. Like you said all kinds of development for Galaxy. When I get on here all of the front page threads are about the old S III & the new S IV or the many variants of the HTC ONE but no front page love for the RAZR HD. I thought it would've been a lot better after the boot loader got unlocked. Don't get me wrong there's been a lot of development for it but it seems the 4.2.2 stuff is still buggy and it may get dropped if the newest version gets released and none of them are official builds and just ports so it isn't even supported by the various groups that the ports come from. I've been running Eclipses Blur from nitro but it seems to lag the longer I have it running. But I still love the phone, the battery in it can't be beat.

Well I must say I have been having fun lately with android 4.3.. Thanks to dhacker29 and Cyanogenmod. As well as 4.2.2.. The AOKP milestone2 is great and soon will be based on 4.3!!
XT912 RaZR SpYdEr CDMA
Lol, forgot all about this topic. Why? Cause development is crazy busy. Thanks @dtrail1 @dhacker29 and endless thanks to everyone involved. 1 thing I have noticed with newer phones today they do not include an HDMI jack as I was told by a Verizon rep this cost $40 to have in the phone so of course they will not do it anymore. I am also frustrated that many new phones do not have external memory card option. But I really could care less because my phone is pimp and is better than most new for these reasons and many others. (Devs of course)
EDIT- Might be wrong forum for this topic? Maybe General? IDK

Ok I've reviewed a lot of threads and some say the Maxx can't be rooted. If there is a link to instruction of how to root this.... Please post here
I'm running JellyBean on a XT912 ... A veriZon phone but want to ditch the software as there are no VeriZon towers here...
Here is a vision... I'd like to run an AT&T sim but want to use the Tracfone bring your own phone which now works only with veriZon smartphones ... but I have an AT&T Tracfone with it's sim that works in this area ... I'd like to place that sim in my Razr Maxx and call and set up the phones ESN to be a Tracfone ... Not a smartphone or for data but just as my phone.
Question... How might this be done ? Can a phones ESN be changed so I would place a working Tracphone's ESN for the towers to see ? Or if I got the right Tracphone agent on and (s)he entered my phones ESN could it be configured to work ? Thanks for all you have done and your responses .
God bless,
Jim

You can use Matt's utility to root the droid RAZR xt912. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192467
If you plan to install custom roms you will probably also want to install safestrap recovery software. Don't use Matt's utility for that, instead download the safestrap 3.65 apk (the latest version) and install that instead. See http://rootzwiki.com/topic/104161-recovery-locked-safestrap-recovery-v365-2013-11-13/
I have read that the droid RAZR xt912 will not work on the at&t network, but I have no experience with this. It's true that it is a global ready phone and will work on gsm overseas, but apparently it won't work on gsm in the states (not sure if the radio is incompatible with at&t or if Verizon did something to make sure it wouldn't work on their biggest competitors system). Please post your experience if you learn more.

Thinking of installing Art Mod tomorrow... Suggestions, Tips, other ROMs I might like ... I'll probably be happy with anything that the GPS, Music, Camera and ability to play and record videos are working. Also need the ROM to make use of the XD card.
Attached screenshot of files I've downloaded.... Any tips, ideas, guidance appreciated.

Safestrap and BMM on card but can't install ... now rooted
Rooted with Matt's Razr Blade .... I put safestrap and BMM onto SD card but made mistake of not installing them before trying to install ARTMOD ... now I can't get past a screen that says waiting to activate phone service with only a power off choice.
I uninstalled the verizon VZW files after rooting but left the android phone apks there.

Well, I finally ditched the RaZr. Had no choice, power buttn was broke and there was no way I could get it to turn on again. Anyways, I don't know what took me so long I wish I would have upgraded sooner, I still have unlimited data and a crazy phone, good luck everyone with your RaZr's.. I am now bootloader unlocked/s-off amazing difference as well as a lot more to choose from as far as active development seeing how this is a newer device. Much love and respect to all Droid RaZr Devs.. Quadrant scores up over 29000
