Charging port >:o - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Anyone else have any issues with the charging port? I'm the idiot that deals with customers doing gymnastics with their phone on the charger that mess up the port and now mine won't read some chargers...such as my moms Razr Maxx or girlfriends HTC one x charger....i tried a new charger fresh from packaging at my store and its kinda working....
Just wanted to see if anyone had any other issues

Haha thats never good! Im having a strange issue with my charger/port. It started a few weeks ago with my car charger. It would start charging then stop. If I rebooted then it would charge. For a while it was limited to my car charger (OEM samsung btw) but as of last few days it started doing it with my wall charger (OEM charger with aftermarket cable.) Fast forward to today. It will not charge with the device on at all. Turn it off and plug it in and it intermittently charges very slowly. I dont think its a software issue or a charger issue because the charger works for other devices. Its either the Battery or the charging port itself. Either way fairly easy fix but a major nuisance when I use my phone for most everything these days haha. Good luck finding your answer!

Boys, that usb port is like a belly button. And you have to dig out the lint ocassionaly. Use a non metal item, like a tooth pick to get all up in there. A little compressed air too.

close enough?

I'm having issues with my charging port as well. I tried the suggested tooth pick method but it didn't work (probably because im not doing it right). Do u think I could buy one of those cans of air to blow out the lint (if there is any) or would that damage the phone? Or any other methods u found that worked?

I thought about warranty but I'm gonna live dangerously and I ordered the flex board and I'll change it out. Read up and watched tutorials, it looks straightforward just gotta mind the gluing and not force it. Will update when I finish the job!

The funny thing is that I got the original charging port replaced through an independent repair shop, but 3 weeks later it's the same problem.....do u guys know how long the whole sending to Samsung process takes?

Update: I got my flex cable yesterday from eBay. 12.99 free shipping. Took forever to get here but packaged very well in a hard plastic box. By looks its the same as OEM in every way to include the i717 markings. Opening up the note was very easy, just use a small jewlers screwdriver set. I have an iPhone toolkit with picks and suction cup so that helped. Biggest thing to remember is BE GENTLE! parts are very well put together so very easy to break if forced apart. Then a few screws later the speaker port and main board were off. Pay special attention to the charge port flex ribbon as its fairly well glued to it with super sticky tape. I used the guitar pick and seperated it with great success. Reassemby was just as easy and I am now happy to say my charging port WAS the problem and my note is 100% operational and unlike some phones once you take them apart they never look the same. Not the case for the note. It looks flawless again. Also a lil bonus by cleaning the dirt out of my antennae connectors my networks are a lot faster so take the extra time to tidy up while your in there!

Yup. Bought mine for $7.99 from China. 2 weeks to get here. Replaced for 10 mins and brand new again

I did. Left the phone in the car overnight and drain the batter flat. Now none of the charger will charge the battery. If I hold the power button for 5-6 seconds, the screen starts up and show the charging batter but them become blank right after couple of second. I left the charge in (with blank screen) for an hour but the whole power on process just repeat. Help!!!

Trackball and Safe mode

I recently saw a guide here how to open your eris and transplant the track ball.
I have no reason to transplant the trackball, but I did open it to attempt to clean it.
I have throughly cleaned the trackball with rubbing acohol three times now and I still can not scroll downward.
Also now my phone only boots into safe mode.
What is wrong with my phone?
Update:
I have now discovered why it boots into safe mode.
Turn out, now the trackball is being determined as pressed, so when i booted into booted into recovery to see what happens, it reflashed pb0000 or whatever it is called.
And down scroll still doesn't work.
Update 2:
I refit the trackball another time and now it now longer boots into safe mode.
Does anyone know why I can't scroll down? I can not nandroid restore if I can't scroll down.
Please help.
some dust or dirt probably got inside the trackball and is blocking the sensor from sensing the trackball movement. since you already opened it up, i would suggest doing that again, in a dusk free environment, then pull the trackball out, spray some compress air on it, then put it back together.

Year I cleaned out all the dust already with an air compressor.
I think it is actually some grease because I remember it first stopped working on easter when my finger were a little bit greasy from ham. So I planning on soaking the ball, with its metal casing, in rubbing alcohol.
I first thought that the warranty became void when I rooted, but after research, I didn't really void it until I broke the seal. If I had known this before hand I prolly wouldn't have opened it.
Thx for the help anyway.
I will post more results eventually.
Cleaned it even more, still doesn't work.
Well I discover that I can use Amon's recovery with adb, so now I am just not gonna worry about the trackball.
it's a common problem with eris' it seems. I had it, and I can remember t least 2 others with the problem.
I used it as a warranty to replace my 2.1 leak so i could root my phone instead, if you still have that little void sticker intact, i suggest you replace your phone. replacing the trackball wont do anything, as the enclosure that you get doesn't include the lenses, just the ball and the carriage.
just to double check:
the manufacturers warranty is for hardware issues up to a year after purchase right?
eris
same issue happened to me with my old eris the trackball wouldnt move down and i got a replacement i just went to verizon and told them and the guy lookedc at it , i was on 2.1 rooted he didnt care he just looked to see it didnt work he said ok and doubnle checked my address and one came in the mail 2 days later and i had to ship mny old one back... now a month ish later my new droid is tharting the same issue again only thing i can think of why its doin this is my jeans are a little tight and maybe the trackball is rubbing against it and now its causing the crackball to be pressed against the sensor and it is defecting it, onlything i can think of... EDIT( and yes the warrenty is 1 year for hardware so just bring it and show him it wont go down and hel say ok and send you one no questions asked, mine was opened and sticker was removed he didnt care)
It seems to stop once n awhile but it is a known issue. And if it starts again im gona open it and do some testing but for now it seems to working ok, my old droid stopped going down completely

After some research and opening my eris a couple of times. I think I have the solution.
I noticed that sometime when I plug the charger into my eris, the cursor moves down.
Before that I released that the track ball work by 4 spinning magnets and 4 magnetometers.
The carriage of the trackball looks something like this:
▊ ▔ ▆
▏O ▕
▆ _ ▊ < Left magnet
^ Down magnet is there
Directly below the down magnet is the usb female slot.
With all my research people have told me that there left and down have stopped working in the past.
Coincidentally, the down and left magnets are very close to the metal usb connector. I am guessing that this is the issue.
Are you saying the sensors are getting magnetised?

Update: when i plug in my usb the down trackball is more sensitive and about normal, idk if its luck or

Above is the chip located above the trackball, also located on the same chip is the metal usb female.
So as you can see the lower magnet come in close contact with it.
Now, I am not 100% sure that this is the cause, but it is a good possibility.
Just call Verizon, make sure to get a good rep, tell him/her that your trackball is messing up. Let them know that you tried to fix it, just don't tell them you opened it, unless they ask. It's not lying or fraud, they don't tell you the whole truth anyways (hidden fees). lol They should replace it without a problem, the only thing is you might get a Droid Eris with 2.1 pre-installed.

Excuse me then, it should be a simple fix if nothing shorted out. I returned my Eris because it shorter out, I cleaned everything, and replaced the whole track ball with my other Eris and still had the same problem. Now I know not to use my Eris while plugged in via usb, there is too much space left over for the usb plug to loosen. I hope this thread will make it easier to fix the flaw in design. So it won't be a problem any more. Thank you for taking the time to read.

I would actually prefer a work around IMO. I never use the trackball unless I need to flash a rom.
Track balls are way old technology from back before laser mouses, so why have one on a phone.
A couple of "work arounds" I thought about were:
1. Change the hotkeys in the recovery and then recompile and flash
2. Use the Recovery from your phone in an ADB like fashion. (This is currentyly supported but has many limitations. For example you can't flash ROM ZIP, but you can nandroid."
3. Control the recovery via Android Screen cast or something similar
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=557717
4. Solder in a trackpad and remove the trackball. (Pretty Far fetched IMO.)
Mine started screwing up again :/

so i kept restarting and taking out the battery til it stopped.
you can see the charging period didnt seem to show up on the graph. the charging period shown there i was not charging but the phone seemed to think it was. so as i was restarting it a few times it went from about 70 to 49 to 17 to 49 again
and also i havent been able to get a phone signal for ages and then when i can it wont let me register a network.
my phone is now basically just a wifi web browsing device until i get it sorted :crying:
Sounds like a battery failure.. Not sure tho.

thats a relief. o2 is down nationwide
EVERY single time I've heard of this issue (and there are a TON of threads all over XDA about this, not to mention all over other forums - seriously, just google "i9100 charging paused voltage too high", and watch how many results you get), it is due to a dirty or failing USB port.
Steps to take.
-clean USB port with a clean, dry brush. (don't be TOO rough)
-if that doesn't work, take out the battery, and with a q-tip and small amount of isopropyl alcohol, clean the USB port. Let it dry, then replace the battery.
-if THAT doesn't work, you'll probably have to get the part for the USB port replaced.

yeah i know. i had both things happen at the same time so initially i thought it was my phone on the fritz and they were related
so i tried those things and it still having problems.
I bought this replacement in Nov off Ebay. After i lost my original one. Do you think I can still take it anywhere to be repaired?
will the o2 store look at it for me?
such a hassle. im gonna have to unroot it and stuff
oh great and now it keeps randomly vibrating and going to this screen and then back to my home screen

By "those things" I'm guessing you didn't actually replace the part for the USB port. Just the cleaning steps?
That image is "desk clock" mode. It gets activated when certain pins in the USB port are shorted with a specific resistance. If you thoroughly cleaned the port as best you could, and are getting random desk clock mode and still randomly getting the charging paused message, then I'd say your USB port is dying a slow death. You'll need to get the part replaced.
From what I hear the part itself is pretty cheap (like $15) and not hard to replace. I don't know if O2 will do it for you though, since you didn't actually buy the phone from them. You can try... but I doubt it, since it was a second hand purchase. Or just take it to a local cellular repair shop.
My phone is also having a similar experience. I running an AOKP rom so it keeps charging instead. How long will the usb port work for. It's being sent back to Samsung to have the screen replace and have notified them about this. So will the usb port work till next week or could it die in hours or days?

I'm not sure how someone on a different continent than you can possibly answer a question about the state of the USB port on your phone and how long it will last.

hmm i'll have to look into it then. no idea where to start buying parts and where to take it to repair.
will have to do some research
It can by caused by humidity too in my opinion. Had this problem few times. My friend had too. It was gone after putting out battery for few hours in warm place. Even when I was keeping my phone in locker at roofed swimming pool it was happening.

It depends on the severity of the damage specific to your phone. If it's damaged more severely, then not long. If it's not damaged so severely, then longer. How long it's been doing it doesn't mean anything.

ok its getting worse now. ive requested a repair from samsung.
before i send it off should i remove all my google and facebook accounts or should it be ok to leave that kind of stuff on there?
As long as it's unrooted, running stock firmware, has the flash counter reset if necessary, why would you need to remove stuff like that first ? I probably wouldn't.
Always remove personal data. Fully wipe your phone. You never know who works in service and what will di with your personal stuff. Thats my opinion.

I got a brand new s2 two and a half weeks ago, 1 week ago when unplugging my charger it sort of went crazy bringing up the car mode, desk clock, charging when it wasn't and the voltage too high popup every 30 seconds. I took it back and they exchanged it straightaway however i have had this one for 3 days and its done exactly the same thing. I rooted and installed a custom rom on the first but left the second totally stock. It also happened to the girlfriends note too.....
Luckily i haven't had the phone for a month yet so i'm still entitled to an exchange but this has put me off samsung and i'm thinking of an alternative if they'll allow me to take a different handset.

Yup... So I just may have *REALLY* bricked my GN2

Did an ODIN restore to Stock Image w/root & bootloader unlocked preserved .
SUCCESS
Booted up and did minimal config. Checked email.. Surfed the web.... made a few calls and txt.
SUCCESS
Booted ClockworkMod Recovery and began install of JB 14....
HANG
Tried powering on the phone......... nothing
Tried CWM Recover boot... red light blinks every few seconds
Tried Download mode w/ODIN... nada ... faint red light blinks every few / 10 seconds.....
Battery was at 80% or so when I started CWM Flash.....
And there ya go... Glad I have insurance ?
Anyone got any ideas before I have to take a walk to the store and pickup a loaner? LOL
Just as an FYI:
This had NOTHING to do with the specific ROM..... It was some hiccup during the flash process in CWM... I've switched back and forth between every rom on here w/o a problem back and forth several times. I just must have angered the flash gods at some point today because all I get is a faint red flash on any power attempt (much like my Xyboard on a completely dead battery)..
I do however wonder if during the day while TMO ported my number from VZW that Verizon didnt send some death / self destruct code to my phone LOL

Completely cant find my 300K Resistors Off to RadioShack I go
Anyone around brooklyn with at RIFF or JTAG box?
I ended up going to my Local VZW Store (still under active contract for a few months) despite using TMo.
Told them I flashed back to Stock image.... then was loading a ROM again to remove bloatware and it went bananas on me. They looked up my acct ; I have been paying more then $200/mo for nearly 4 years now........ The rep was really knowledgeable about 3rd party ROMS/Rooting and said he would send me out a new phone tomorrow under extended warranty. Also said they just send it back to Samsung who just hardware flashes it and sends it ous as a REFURB unit since it was in literally MINT condition (Otterbox Defender) since Day 1.
Moral of the story: Was honest and expected nothing other then a "sorry buddy... you are out of luck" .. told him the truth and got a replacement (he even switched my titanium grey to white on the replacement). Didn't file a bogus insurance claim and the rep who is an asst mgr at the store was an ACE. If their costs monthly weren't so high I would be inclined to stay with VZW; but a few lines for me the wife and my kids on there is giving me an unnecessary beating to the tune of 2X my TMO costs.
For all the misgivings about VZW ...... I have to say its not the company........ Its being lucky enough to get a rep that isnt a hardon and appreciated me not giving him BS.
+1 VZW assoc mgr man.

Def was too weird AND out of left field. I even pulled out the soldering gun and sacrificed 2 usb cables and made a 300K Ohm and 301K Ohm jig and still nothing. Short of a full on JTAG / RIFF / Medusa attempt I don't think there is hope for this thing.Emmc sudden death seems possible at the most inopportune time; but it may just as easily be a power circuit failure based on what I am seeing with the meter and three batteries.
Thanks for the story, hopefully I don't have to experience it anytime soon

With non-removable battery, I have formed a habit of plugging in my phone wherever possible...at my office, at home, first thing I do when I enter my car. If I keep a count, it would be like more than 20 times per day. Each time, removing and reinserting the USB cap.
My concern is whether that USB cap is going to fall off soon? Anyone know how sturdy or resilience that little string that connect the cap to the phone?
That string seems to be such 20th century solution, no?

Yup, magnets is the way to go! I have only opened the flaps once or twice since I got it. I use AirDroid to transfer files to and from my computer.

You should check your phone. Charging 20 times per day is insane. The phone should get you at least 4 hours of screen time. Assuming you don't do anything else but use your phone since you love it so much, you should only be charging a maximum of 4 times a day assuming charging takes 2hours since your using the phone at the same time. 20 times a day means your phone is probably always plugged in already.
I suggest having it exchanged.

How do you use the charging dock in the car? LOL

Oh no, there's nothing wrong with the phone battery.
I just have a habit of pluging in my phone when ever possible to keep it as much charged as possible.
Just in case, I'm stuck in a broken elevator for hours, I can play Candy Crush longer.
I didn't have this habit with any one my previous battery removable phones.....it just all started with the HTC One (non-removable battery)

Just ordered to USB magnetic charging cable via Amazon. Will get them soon, and report back. It would have been cool if Sony included these.
Like I mentioned before, all the engineers were probably assigned to the PlayStation 4 group, and left only one lonely part time summer intern to the Ultra LOL

Amazon
Amazon Cable only
It only cost HK$50 (US$6.4) to replace the cap here in Hong Kong's Sony repair centre, so its pretty in-expensive.
this is why I bought the charging station before the cellphone itself !!!
If you lost your USB or Micro Sd card cap cover you can buy the same also from the below link....May be this is useful

cheaper magnetic dock from amazon here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2464956
I got my magnetic cable today. It's a perfect solution. Thank you for suggesting it.
Out of curiosity, what would happen if I charge the phone simultaneously using both the magnetic connector and the micro USB?
(a) The phone would implode, vaporize, and generate a wormhole causing a temporal shift
(b) The phone will be charged up faster
(c) The phone will be charged up at regular rate
Thanks in advance.

Alright, i lied. I have no idea what'll happen The question now is; do you dare?
You know what? I'm gonna pass on this one. I'll let CERN physics lab have a crack at spawning the wormhole first.

[Q] Hardware Fault: Device thinks its charging (volt sensor)

So for the past 4 days, my device often wont stop thinking its charging. So what I mean is that I'll plug it in (USB or Magdock) and it will charge normally. I'll unplug it, and the battery symbol and LED will still says its charging.
Once this happens, it will only charge off the magnetic dock.. So plugging in USB wont work, and no charge will occur. Its mental eh!
Its happened since I started using the magnetic dock.
What i've noticed is that reversing the magnetic charger cable, will make the device realise its not on charge. My laptop will also display a message saying that the... " USB device has been disabled due to excessive drain"
so somethings not right.
EDIT:
I have unlocked my bootload,
rooted,
flashed stock Sony ROM (with modified kernel)
flashed CM10.3...
Still doing it. Most def. is a hardware fault... SOB!

have flashed FTF's: .510 / .532 / .537 and they all do it.
So stands to reason its not software...
Sony states that you shouldn't use the magnetic dock with USB ports.
Try to reboot, for every small problem I've had. a reboot fixed them all.
Without effect firmware update

me too !!
In my case,If you attempt to reboot, it must be "forced shutdown" before going any further in the repeat of the SONY logo.
I was out to repair to give up.

I assume you mean use both mag dock and USB to charge at the same time..
Yeah thats probably not a good idea. Too much volts going in.
I haven't done that, but there is clearly a problem with my device. Looking into a replacement from the store.

With the galaxy note this would happen if the USB port got any dirt in it. First place to check if you experience this. Take a cotton bud and some pure alcohol and while the phone is off, gently clean the pins then leave it to dry for a few minutes before turning it on. Dirt or dust can cause the pins to short and think it's charging.

Yeah that was the first thing I tried. However it happens on both USB, and MagDOCK, so its not a dust issue. There must be a hardware sensor that detects amp flow into the device, and must be a fault when amp flow is reduced/stopped.
ok so update.
Have sent my Ultra back to Hong Kong from where I purchased it. I'm guessing hardware fault...
:crying::crying:
And now I'm without my Ultra...
