Hey, i have an rooted HTC Hero with froyo 2.2 VillianROM.
I've found a ROM on xda and wanted to put it on. so i'd copied the zip file to the sdcard. Entered Recovery mode (my recovery image is the ps3 hackable image for jailbreaking) update went good, so i've selected the reset my device. Htc Hero logo's come up, and then the boot animation with HTC Quietly Brilliant Comes up. Animation goes smooth, and it is HERE that the problems occurs. Afterwards the phone is stuck in this mode, and it have been stock for more than an hour!
So what do i do now? Install a new ROM?

Try to download this ROM one more time and put it on your sdcard again. Then try to flash your Hero with this ROM. Maybe sth went wrong during downloading file.
If this won't help, try another ROM.

I can't put any files on my Micro SD Card. Tried to enter recovery mode and re-install the same ROM again but didn't work. Same problem as the last one.
Copy ROM file on sd without using phone - put card in card reader in your PC. Did you make full wipe?
Didn't make full wipe, have found a floyo ROM and installed it buy using my freinds htc desire i was able to switch the sdcard's so that he could copy the files to the card. (this time i wiped the device)
ohh wait... IT'S ALIVE! just in this moment it worked!

When you say a backup do you refer to the nandroid backup
he indeed is referring to nandroid, i never do it cuss im a flasher like mad, so i set up a new rom in minutes.
But backup then do a full wipe, including dalvik, and then install the new rom, even if its the same base, just full wipe, my advice.
When i try to do a nandroid backup, it takes foreverto do i'll always end up taking the battery out...
thats why i dont do backups on my phone, not the patience

I have a similar problem.
After flashing a 2.2 rooted rom (can't remember which one), i wanted to return bak to SenseHero 2.1 b5, but it always gets into boot loop.
First i tried nand restore-didn't work, then full wipe and flash again-didn't work.
Then i tried other 2.1 rooted roms (Kimera, cronos droid), but always end up in loop at boot.
Only 2.1 roms I can boot into are villain, modaco which I do not really like, and STOCK 2.1.1 rom which is terrible. I want SenseHero 2.1 back, or CronosDroid
I did a full wipe before flashing 2.2, I always do full wipe before flashing ROMs so I don't know what's the problem.
Even tried adding flykernel 10/11c over fresh sense hero 2.1 flash, but didn't help.
I think that the problem startet when I flashed new recovery 1.7.0.1, but i reverted back to 1.6.2, and flashed sense hero, but it didn't change anything.
Can anyone help me?

Don't think that the recovery image-change has anything to do with it. I had an ps3 recovery image (for jailbreaking) and i was able to get into the phone from there.
i putted a new rom on to the sdcard, totatlly wiped the device, installed the rom, and reseted the device (i did tough this proces serveral times before it finally booted up!)
I recently rooted my phone and flashed the TWRP recovery for it as it was recommended on IRC. One of my favorite apps when I had my rooted 4G was Rom Manager. It allowed me to easily backup and flash roms whenever I pleased.
Is there something similar to that for TWRP? Rom Manager requires having Clockwork Mod recovery to use. Also what are the advantages / disadvantages if any to either recovery?

I like doing everything manually from recovery myself. The advantages of TWRP of CWM is the ease of access of certain options in the menus. I love having the wipe cache and dalvik cache as an option in the install zip menu. You can also change the theme easily. I like the backup options in the Nandroid menu and the fact that it backs up your wimax partition. There are many advantages in TWRP over CWM imo. It is designed for the Evo 3D natively and CWM is a port, so it's options are not designed for the Evo 3D. TWRP is just laid out better and you don't have to scroll through the work no 8 times just to wipe cache. Rom Manager is nice, but even when I did use CWM on my NS4G, I never, ever used the app because I just feel safer doing things manually.
All this is a matter of opinion, so it ultimately is up to you. Maybe the ultimate and best reason to shoose TWRP over CWM is because when you go into the Wipe Menu there is a roll of toilet paper in the background.

Instead of making a new thread ill go ahead and ask here. I'm currently doing a Titanium Backup of my apps / data. I'm also going to do a nandroid backup using TWRP since I've decided to dive into a rom. Are there any other recommended steps I should take before I flash? I hear talk of kernals but know nothing about them.

I read in his thread there was only 2 kernals for 2.3.4, stock and another custom that's floating around.

If you are going to a 2.3.4 Rom I would stick with the stock kernel that comes with the Rom for now. Until HTC releases the source for the 2.3.4 kernel we won't have any custom kernels to flash. I would suggest searching here and on Google what is a Linux kernel and what benefits a custom kernel can give you in Android.
Also, if you flash an incompatible kernel it will at least break things like wifi, sms, mms and other functions of the phone and at most completely make your phone unbootable and you will have to nandroid restore.

Yep. The Rom's always include a kernel. If you want a custom kernel, that is a separate flash. Some Rom's include a custom kernel and some include stock kernels. I will say that I am using a Rom based off the HTC 2.3.4 update and has the stock kernel and it is actually very smooth and runs fast. I really am not sure overclocking is necessary on this phone, especially after all of the Sprint and HTC bloat are taken out. Though I can understand why people want and do overclock, but seriously benchmarks don't mean shiz to me. How the phone runs in real time use and how the battery performs are my greatest concerns.

i'm assuming you just enter recovery, select install zip -> choose zip to flash -> select your custom rom.zip from the list and then let it do it's thing.
just want to be sure so hopefully someone can confirm or post proper steps.

Assuming you already have S-OFF you just need this file http://www.techerrata.com/android/twrp/PG86IMG-twrp-shooter-1.0.3.zip
*Download flashable zip from the OP and rename it "PG86IMG.zip" (without the quotes)
*Place in the root of the sdcard
*Power off phone (make sure you turn off hot boot or pull the battery when it's off)
*Power on the phone holding power and volume down
*Follow the prompts to flash it
*Delete .zip (PG86IMG.zip) after booting

Kind of hard to navigate for an answer right now because the last few times I've tried the search tool on here it's said it's not working right now so I figured this would be the best way to get an answer. It seems a lot of the guides I've seen cover older builds, but I haven't seen any with details for the new Aroma Installer. Currently I'm using a deblurred GB ROM with CWM-based Recovery v5.0.2.3-photon2.
I'm assuming first (after backups of course) I need Jokers recovery, but I'm not seeing downloads anywhere now since Jokers site is down.
Then I'm assuming I just need to use install zip from sdcard to run full-wipe, aroma_prep, aroma-2.56.
Then I use Aroma to install the ROM with the options file?
After the ROM has installed and started I assume I'll have to reset the APNs like on GB so I can get MMS back.
Is there any other things I need to do or am I wrong about installation method?
JB builds are being maintained by t3hbill and he isn't using aroma. Also, no need to full wipe. Just dalvik/cache, flash over current and fix permissions. I used twrp 2.2.0 and haven't had any issues. Then again, remember to backup in recovery just in case anything goes wrong.

you're using the wrong recovery. that one is well outdated and doesn't work. check out my site for download links to the recoveries (use the mirror links for jokers). all versions available are posted. TWRP, photon3 and both of jokers V3 and V4. i use the classic photon3 recovery. works perfectly. http://www.motosunfire.com/clockworkmod-recovery/
to install the rom. find the rom. flash it. flash gapps. reboot. add your apn's. (always wipe cache, data, system when changing roms to ensure a good clean install)
I've only entered my APNs once. I get MMS. And doesn't Joker's v4 recovery have a problem flashing Gapps? (Personally I use TWRP. Love it.)
I don't recommend keeping \data from GB to JB. When I did that going from GB to CM9, it boot looped. Had to start fresh.
Starting fresh isn't as bad as it sounds. Get on WiFi and put the time in to get it set how you like it. Personally, I'm a little lazy -- if I set something up one way, and later it bothers me, I'm not always up for going in and changing it. But if I start fresh? It's gonna be done how I most currently like it. Also keep up with the latest and greatest apps on blogs like Android and Me, Android Police, whatever you like, replace apps you've been using, maybe with something better. I've been using FBReader loyally for about 2 years. I just switched to Fabrik (the one that uses Dropbox to sync your place in the book). The interface could use work, but the app is literally days old. For that it's good. With all this flashing I do it's the only way I can see keeping a place in a book, and it's free. I'm not trying to plug it, it's just an example. Also switched from QuickOffice to Kingsoft Office (latter is totally free). Again, fresh start, fresh perspective. And fresh perspective, you enjoy your device more. Feels newer.

Currently I have root, S-On, and no other mods or ROMs. I am getting the popup notification to update literally every time I turn on the screen. I can select defer and set a date about a week in the future from whatever day it is, but the popup comes back within the hour. A few times it even began downloading on its own (while on 4G as well, ~100 mb of data used up every time).
All I would like to do is somehow get my phone to be as if I were complete stock and accepted the OTA, keep root, and not have to wipe any data (or be able to restore a full nandroid). I am getting very frustrated with everything and once I think I understand it, someone throws out something new to me.
If anyone is willing to take some time to help me with this I would gladly make a donation, either to them or another party of their choosing

You can simply flash a stock rom that has the update & flash the newer stock kernel that goes with it but you wont be able to update the radios. You wont lose any info this way unless something goes wrong.(always backup everything just in case something goes wrong).
As for backup, you will only be able to backup aps & data with titanium backup or some sort of program like that because If you do a nandroid backup and then restore after applying the update, you would be restoring your old rom basically over the new one and lose most update enhancements.
You should just follow the thread here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2155069 and go S-Off. I know you will have to restore everything because you will wipe your phone when you do this but its only gonna make things easier for you in the future.
Do a nan backup and save it in case you want to use it in the future and go back to what you had. Once you have S-Off, you can flash kernals, radios, & roms and put in any version you want.

Have you unlocked the bootloader? (this step is usually done in connection with rooting the phone at the htcdev.com website). If you have an ulocked bootloader, then you can flash an alternate recovery (eithe cwr or twrp) and do a nandroid backup.
Then follow the steps to get s-off. Note: the step where you have your data wiped is unlocking the bootloader, not obtaining s-off. If you already have an alternate recovery, and root, then s-off generally will not wipe your phone. But do an nandroid backup in cwr or twrp just in case Although a nandroid won't backup pictures etc.
Once you have s-off, flash the stock (but rooted) rom you linked to in step 4. This step SHOULD flash the stock kernel if the .zip file was prepared properly. If you boot into the rom and have flickering or wifi issues, then you will need to flash the stock 2.04 kernel (in fastboot). You can also verify if the new kernel was installed when the rom is booted by looking at the Settings:About:Software Information:More (baseband, kernel etc). You should see there kernel version 3.4.10. The baseband (radio) should be 1.01.01.0110 once you have updated the radio (see the step below). The kernel file is the boot.img file you were asking about. The modules will already be built into the stock rom.
While in fastboot (not recovery) you can flash the updated radio files (that will make the baseband referred to above be 1.01.01.0110.
The time when you need to worry about flashing a kernel (boot.img) and modules is if you are s-on, or if you are s-off and the zip file was prepared as you were s-on. When you flash a "kernel", it consists of a boot.img file, along with some extraneous files (the module). When you are s-off, these can both be flashed together while in recovery. When you are s-on, the boot.img file must be flashed from fastboot (or else an alternate method using an app like Flash Image GUI). Because until recently, most DNA's were s-on, the kernel developers prepared their files for s-on devices, with instructions for s-on devices.
When you flash a rom that uses a different kernel than the one you are using, if the .zip file is prepared for a s-off device, then there are no additional steps necessary.
You may want to do a factory reset when you flash the updated 2.04 rom. I think it would be wise. As I said earlier, you shouldn't lose your /sdcard partition UNLESS you haven't already unlocked your bootloader. s-off doesn't reset your device.

I was looking for this exact solution as well. This was before we had s-off. For a while my solution was to freeze a couple apps in TB so the OTA pop up would stop popping up. I think it was HTC DM 1.0.2219251543..... and HtcDm 1.0.221982913.... Looks the same but they are different.
I like stock but I eventually flashed ViperDNA. It looks like stock but you are able to customize the $h!!t out of it. Its an awesome ROM that I highly recommend. Although you might want to wait until he comes out with 1.2 (the new version with the latest firmware) becuase you have to wipe data. Data wiping isn't a big deal if you use TB.
Ether way you go - Stock ROM or ViperDNA - The recommended way to wipe your device is this way:
(I'm using TWRP but CR should be similar, might be in different menus)
Backup everything using TB
Backup Pics and other docs on internal SD card (JUST IN CASE)
Make Nandroid Backup in Recovery
Wipe Menu-> Wipe Dalvik Cache (some like to wipe 3 times others think its just a waste of time)
Wipe Menu-> Wipe Cache (Factory Reset wipes cache but I like to wipe cache anyway just for completeness )
Wipe Menu-> Factory Reset
Wipe Menu-> System
Don't Format Data and Don't wipe Internal Storage. You will loose SD card contents.
Once you install your ROMS, flash your kernals, flash radios...whatever you want to do...You can restore apps and data from TB
As always, follow the ROMS instructions on their page for more information.
Only Restore User Apps and Data
Never restore any system apps in RED. May not be compatible with new ROM
You can however restore system Data that is in Yellow or Green (DATA ONLY)

Once I get everything updated and get a good nadroid of the newest firmware with all my apps I will definitely give ViperDNA a shot. I tried a few custom ROMs on my Thunderbolt, and while they were great to customize, they weren't always stable. Like I said I use my phone for work all day so I really need something dependable, and so far stock hasn't let me down.

Yeah, I had the same problem on the Thunderbolt, nothing stable. Viper however feels great. I would definitely freeze the HTC apps in Titanium Backup to get rid of the annoying pop ups. I noticed Viper has them uninstalled.
About to start, few more questions. The stock ROM I linked to (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2149095) says it doesn't have the new firmware, is that different from kernel or anything else? Do I need to flash that as well?

I'm actually running that rom right now.
You don't need to flash the radio if you don't want. If you are happy with your cell reception, and battery life, as well as wifi, then you can stay on the original radio.
Or if you'd like to try the new radio, you can flash that (once you have s-off) with this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=38197525
I'm not sure if there is a radio flash prepared to go back to the original radio. Generally speaking, once to are s-off, you can change radios at will.
From what I understand, if you flash the rom you linked to, and the radio above, then you will have everything from the update, except the updated hboot. I haven't bothered changing my hboot. changing hboot won't affect the day to day operation of the phone, but it can change the fast boot commands that are available. Until I see a good reason, I am not going to worry about my hboot.
FYI: about changing radios, from what I understand, the radio file is the code that tells the phone how to communicate with the towers. It tells the phone how to adjust the power output of the radio according to the strength of signal from the cell. This can be very aggressive, leading to better signal, at the expense of battery life (increasing power output of the phone radio takes more power from the battery), or it can be conservative, with a little lower quality signal, but conserving battery life.
It seems that the engineers at the carriers are constantly tweaking the radio code to find a sweet spot between signal quality and battery life. Different carriers may tweak the radio for the same phone with a different priority. Sprint may prioritize signal, while verizon prioritizes battery. So each carrier may have a different radio file for phone that is in the same phone family. And then each carrier may have multiple radios. On the thunderbolt there were about 6 or 7 I think, but it is generally believed that newer radios work better than older ones.
Some people on xda will often experiment to see which radio file works best for them, depending on where they live and work.
I always try to be careful to only flash redid that others have reported to work with my device, rather than experimenting personally. I would think that you can brick your phone flashing the wrong radio file.

Firmware is the Android system. The Droid DNA is on on 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean). That version has not changed in the new OTA update so I don't know why that ROM even mentioned it.
The Kernal is the interface that alows the software to access the hardware. A more detailed explanation can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=ROM-VS-Kernel
HBOOT is 'kinda' like your BIOS in windows. It is the bootloader. It is the first thing that is loaded on your phone. This too I believe has not changed with the latest OTA update.

As you can see it is mostly stuff related to your radio so the radio is the main part you would want. I personally just updated my radio and din't worry about anything else.

I don't think it is deodexed otherwise it would tell you. I think deodexed is good if you want to theme.
I'm using the first one, which isn't deodexed. But I'm keeping my rom close to stock this week
Next week, when the Viper rom has been updated to 2.04, I'll be flashing that, and probably a theme.
You indicated that you aren't currently running any mods or themes. Unless you are looking to change, I would suggest you flash the first rom you linked, which is stock, except for the root capability being added to it.
The de-odexed rom you asked about will have been modified, deleting the .odex files so that the rom can further be customized by themes etc. When a phone boots a rom that is missing the .odex files, it will take longer to boot because it will essentially create the missing .odex files on the fly while booting. But when you are modding your rom, adding themes etc., existing .odex files get in the way, so that is why developers remove the .odex files, even though the rom will take longer to boot. Once the phone is booted, whether the rom was odexed or not becomes irrelevant.
For now, if you are looking to be on the latest radio and HTC rom, I suggest you get s-off, then flash the basic 2.04 rom (the one you linked to first), and the updated radios. Hopefully HTC will soon release the updated source files for the 2.04 kernel, and then we will have more customization.
If you are looking to customize now, I would get s-off, then flash the updated radios, but stay with a rom based on the original released rom and source (like Viper). The latest Viper rom (with updates to 1.1.3) has modifications so that you won't have to worry about getting bugged to update your ROM for 2.04. If you decided to go with Viper, it is a little confusing when viper is updating from 1.1 to 1.1.1 to 1.1.2 to 1.1.3, because it uses an over-the-air (OTA) update process similar to the stock OTA update. So you may see notices for updates - but the updates would be for Viper. Once you have gotten your phone s-off, you don't need to worry about updates causing problems.

Ok so I have done everything, S-off, deodexed stock ROM, 3.4.10 kernel (it flashed with the ROM), and updated radio. I'm able to boot up but I don't have wifi.
Edit: Flashed the boot.img from the zip and it's working now.

Congrats!
I think that rom you used wasn't set up properly to flash the boot.img from recovery, so that is why you had to do it manually. As time goes on (and there are more users with s-off), I think most new roms will be set up properly, so you shouldn't run into that again.
The whole process wasn't that hard, and using TiB made it really easy to get everything back.
So how do I go about removing bloatware now that I have S-Off and I am deodexed?
Although there are several ways to start removing bloatware, one of the easiest ways is to go into TiBu, and freeze apps. Make a nandroid backup first, and start slow.
Some apps have dependencies, you freeze one, and another might not work, like contacts and dialer.
After you have frozen an app, and are confident that it isn't necessary, you can delete it if you want.

I would highly recommend using the OTA blocking zip to kill the update messages. I'm not very handy with posting zips yet but search the threads for the disable OTA. I am on the Viper DNA rom also but I put the OTA blocking on just in case. If I were on my PC instead of my phone I could have posted the zip file for you. I'm sure with each rom the developer has added a file to make sure the OTA is killed but you can never be too sure.

Once you are on stock recovery, and assuming you're on stock kernel, it allows you to take the OTA update!
After you take the ota just flash the custom recovery of your choice again. CWM Touch is a good option: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Flash the superuser-busybox.zip to root.
This gives you a completely clean "factory" upgrade to 2.04, without losing any of your data (YMMV - so pls always take a backup before you do this).
It worked for me - yippee!!!

Whole procedure took less than 15 minutes

Thanks zanyguy for the procedure and process outline. I have a question regarding my current format and was wondering if going to a stock rooted version would work for me. Since every end user is different then there are different things they want of course. For me the process is very simple. I like a very lean system. I also like to try and achieve many things to look as close to AOSP as I can get and keep functionality. My current setup has the phone unlocked, rooted, s-off and running Viper 1.1.3. My radio is the OTA update radio of 1.01.01.0110 and my kernel is the same 3.4.10-ga02d2c6. What I wonder is this. Should I even bother trying to flash the stock Rom? Is there any benefits to doing so? And if I do give it a spin should I just restore the Viper DNA rom or re flash anew?

THIS IS ONE QUICK/SIMPLE ERROR FREE ROM FLASHING PROCEDURE
This should eliminate a few posts saying, stuck in download mode, stuck at logo. just vibrates and them MANY other issues that somehow, everyone seems to find.
Here is my quick rom flashing process I use ALWAYS (yes always)
THINGS YOU NEED ON extSDCARD
1. Extra kernels (2 or 3 you know works for your device)
2. Optional: 2 recoveries that can be flashed (I use CWM & TWRP)
3. Optional: apps.zip (a zip created from Titantium BU, containing Root Explorer, TU Backup, Quickpic, ES File Explorer and Terminal Emulator)
Flashing the rom: TOUCHWIZ/AOSP ROMS
1. Backup current rom (to the extsdcard)
2. Complete wipe, (I do complete, some people do not) Complete = No Issues [FACTORY RESET + CLEAR CACHE + CLEAR DALVIK CACHE + CLEAR DATA]
3. Flash the rom
4. Flash the kernel (your device kernel) (I know some roms have their own kernel) this is where your problems start.
AGAIN: FLASH YOUR KERNEL, you KNOW it works. 1 more time FLASH YOUR KERNEL. (you can experiment with other kernels after you boot)
AOSP ROMS - require you to flash gapps before you boot. [This is not required for TouchWiz roms]
5. Boot the rom.
FINISHED!!!! SUCCESS!!!
Total time to flash a rom:
7-10min
Errors - NONE
This goes for every rom in my guide.
TIPS:
This flash procedure is for Touchwiz Roms, if you are flashing AOSP roms, you must flash the gapps package associated with the rom you are flashing.
**** SGH-I337M Users: Often requires flashing a different kernel than the one included in most ATT ROMS. Any GT-i9505 kernel will work and Adam kernel and Faux kernel are both confirmed working for us Canadian users.
Note: Flash KERNEL directly after ROM then reboot device.

The extra recovery I flash if a rom does not like the recovery I am using.
Yes, you can flash recoveries back and forth.
Apps.zip I flash after the rom is up & running. This I use to get the rom setup (like root explorer and others needed)

I've been running into a lot of issues when trying to flash different ROMs. For instance, right now I'm on CleanROM 1.6 - I just tried to install PureGv2.
Steps I took:
Have Goo and ROM Manager installed after clean install of CleanROM 1.6
Flash CWM from ROM Manager
Install Recovery Script from Goo
Reboot into recover from Goo
TWRP loads
Wipe data, cache, dalvik, etc
Install PureGv2
I forget the error off the top of my head but it doesn't install
In a nutshell I'm asking what am I doing wrong? Do I need to flash another kernel?
Flash your verizon kernel. Correct. I know it is a vzn rom, but do it anyway.

Was looking through Tomsgt's Youtube channel and stumbled across a video of his that showed his "About Phone". Everything was identical to mine, so I'm still a little lost as to why I can flash certain ROMs but not others. Sac/Gru's ROM soft bricked my phone, Hyperdrive5.7 didn't install, CleanROM does. It's just funky...maybe I'll just Odin back to stock, flash the MDK and start fresh.
Could the downloads be a problem? I downloaded 2 of the ROMs from work today on a 50meg pipe and they didn't work.
Do you download the ROMs to your phone or to your computer and then move them to your SD card?
If you download to your phone, do you move them to the SD card or leave them in the download folder on the internal storage?
If you do the latter, do you use a micro SD adapter or plug the phone in and move them that way?

Download to the computer,then copy to the phones extsdcard, should be ok, make sure you do a md5 check on the files to make sure they are the correct size.

I certainly scared the carp outta me the other night. I'm using the Carbon ROM and while I do like it, I miss a couple of the S4s features. I picked what looked like a good modified stock ROM and proceeded to flash it.
I'm using Goo and TWRP for the job. I checked of all 3 boxes for clearing cache, davik and factory reset.
Then I chose the file and started it.
The first result, it acted like if was doing everything but nothing changed. Phone still worked fine.
On the next try, I waited for TWERP to start and I reselected the ROM I wanted and flashed it.
When it booted up, I was very happy to see the original screens come up. Then it stopped on the one with the Verizon check mark. The blue LED slowly pulsing and nothing else for about 30 min. I removed battery to try and start over. Same thing again.
Time to goto my backup and restore my phone back to Carbon.
IT FAILED.
Now my phone is stuck in a weird looking boot up loop. After a few tries I was able to get into recovery
mode. TWRP started loading, froze and crashed! Even though I am a total noob at this, I still did not panic.
I'd restart my phone by removing the battery, going into recovery mode and then wildly press every button on my phone hoping to break the loop. It worked! I chose a different save and tried it all over again. FAIL.
ON the next I wiped every bit of old data off. Chose Factory restore crossed my fiingers....it work! My phone is fine now.
Thanks to that ordeal and this thread I think I know what I did wrong even though this never happened to me. before.
1) WIPE THE DATA
2)INSTALL A COMPATABLE KERNAL FIRST

So, if you just need to add something, like different Kernerl, do you have to wipe and start from scratch?
Should you.
If so, and you backup apps and data in Titanium, then what you do a full wipe, flash entire rom, and reinstall the apps and data associated therewith?
Last, I have asked this but cannot seem to get an answer.
Installed Hyperdrive 7 (also had 5.7 and 6). Rom is super smooth and fast, working like a charm. but I want Verizon Visual Voice Mail.
I tried to copy the apk file to the devices system/app directory but get permission denied message....tried to install, and get failed message....

did you set the permissions for the app? That should work actually. Look at one of the apps in that directory, and set the permissions the same for the voice app. Reboot and see what happens.

Please bring the question over to my thread up above. It shows also what kernels to use. We will help there.
Another noob question: so you still advise flashing a kernel even if the ROM creator says that the ROM comes with the appropriate kernel and that no extra flashing is required? I've got the Verizon Galaxy S4 variant and specifically am thinking of Dubbsy's Google Play Edition ROM.

You would flash the rom, and after, flash your verizon kernel, simple as that.
