I recently picked up a Sony Tablet P model SGPT211US/S. It's the AT&T model, I got a really good deal on it but I've been struggling to root it. As best I can tell I've installed the drivers and the adb package. From there I've tried the all in one root tool with little luck. The tablet is running 3.2.1 and wont find any up dates to ICS.
I've done some research and there are 2 things I've found. A few times I've come across some people talking about un-rootable devices. Going from a process of elimination I'm assuming the SGPT211US/S might be one of them?
I'm extremely familiar with rooting on the Galaxy Tab and S devices. Is there some sort of similar method to Odin an ICS Firmware to the Tablet P (SGPT211US/S)? I'm a little lost here. I've even read that ICS wont come to the AT&T version of the P. I don't need the data connection and from what I've read you need to root in order to flash custom roms, which has been my experience with Samsung devices. Is there a method to flashing a stock or modified stock rom on the Tablet P similar to odin flashing to a Samsung device? Any help would be great, this one is really confusing me.

If there is no root obtained from using AIO then you are out of luck. Can you tell me your build number ie 3.2.1R2 kernel 10, from settings about. Many users have the kernel 10 issue where the exploit has been patched and we are currently awaiting a new root method.
What was the nbx02_XXX number from system/build.prop i assume it is nbx02_001. Which is normal US. Maybe AT&T have disabled OTA updates? In which case if you can find an update on the web you can apply it through recovery.

First off I appreciate the help!
Honeycomb
3.2.1
Kernel version
2.6.36.3
I'm not sure I fully follow the nb info. I don't see it.
I do see integ-build5 #1after the kernel version.
Under build number
THMAAS0015400
Baseband
R4A02
Maybe this will help determine if I'm unable to root? I might try the update through recovery, however I've read that might make it so I cant root?

Ok so you are what we call kernel5 so you should be able to root, unless AT&T have patched the root exploit. Can you try the attached program, it is the original exploit that is in the AIO tool but may help.
same tab here, it's possible to install ics, even loosing the at&t branding? I don't care

Stifilz, I had my hopes up reading your posts here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592663&page=2) that I might be able to update to 3.2.1 and then root with AIO. When I tried installing the suggested rom signed-nbx03_006-ota-0042.004.zip using recovery, I got the following error:
Erohibit update as a result of checking version or base sku
Do you think this is because I'm currently on a 3.2 base10 kernel, because I'm trying to install a French ROM on a US tablet, or because it is a Wifi+3G ROM and this is a Wifi-only tablet? I only tried this version because it is what you suggested in another post. Is there a US Wifi-only, non-base10 version to try instead? Is there a way to tell the kernel version of a .zip without flashing it?
My tablet info is:
Model: SGPT112US/S
Android Version: 3.2
Kernel Version: 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1
Build Number: 1.10.001100001
Best Regards.

I was able to successfully update to 3.2.1 build 5 using signed-nbx03_001-ota-0042.001.zip and then root with AIO. At least the script completed, but I'm not sure how to tell if it succeeded or not.

Little help, please
I have the same tablet P (AT&T) as the original post... About screen shows it's also build5.
I was successful using the AIO to achieve root on the Honeycomb it came with, but trying to update to ICS has gotten me nowhere.
I thought perhaps using the AIO's Region Changer combined with one of the OTA update files I found in another thread would be enough. It failed with the message about 'prohibit update because of base sku'. I then tried various combinations of fiddling with the settings on the Aio and downloading other files from different threads with no luck. Even tried that "nbx03" update even though I know this one is nbx02 and being a noob I haven't the slightest idea how to fool the device into using that update.
I'm ok with using what I have if there's really no way to upgrade, but it seems like with all the different options there SHOULD be some way. Any ideas? I'd appreciate any advice you have.
Thanks in advance.

First off, I'm completely new to this and wish to root my new sgs2, and I've done some reading on the forum about this but got some questions (or want to confirm what I think I know) before I actually go ahead with the process. I apologize if it's something others have already asked, but I would really hate for anything to happen to what has become my new baby...
I mainly just want root access on my phone as I've come across several apps and what not that required root access.
My phone's status right now:
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband: I9100XXKG1
Kernel Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100ZSKG2-CL361136 [email protected] #6
Build: GINGERBREAD.ZSKG2
I found (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399) about CF-Root. It seems like a lot of people recommend this method to root, so I thought I may try it out. Before I do though, I wanted to know:
- Just rooting my phone will not prevent me from receiving any new updates to my phone via Kies, right? (E.g. a new firmware or version comes out in the future...)
- What do I need to do if I wish to unroot in the future?
- For this method, this should be the one I should download and use right? (it's the closest one I found matching my current kernel): CF-Root-SGS2_ZS_OZS_KG2-v4.1-CWM4.zip
Again, sorry for asking what may be pretty simple questions, but I really appreciate everyone's help!
Hi,
You can follow this (http://knowmydroid.com/guide/root-samsung-galaxy-s-2) step by step guide to root your SGS2.
1) Yes, rooting your phone means you cannot use KIES anymore. Its highly not recommended
2) Download any official firmware from SamFirmware.com and flash via ODIN
3) You can flash the KH3 version of CF-Root as well.

Hello,
you will still receive updates via KIES.
Unroot is possible with SuperOneclick. I have not tried so far. Every new firmware overwrites root. So if you root with ODIN and flash the rooted Firmware to the original one, KIES will allow to upgrade.
You could also use ODIA's insecure original kernels and use the ones provided from INTRATECH to have the original back on.
Never tried CF myself.
This phone is practically impossible not to root! Read everything thoroughly and take the dive, see you on the other side

Thanks~
Thanks for all the help! I did take the plunge ... and have no regrets!
I used CF's way, and have flashed back to my original stock kernel afterwards (courtesy of INTRATECH). Everything seems to be happy so far.
And now.. time to have some real fun with the phone
Thanks again everyone!
I also recently rooted with the CF-Root method. Congrats from a fellow HK/Taiwan phone user.

Hi
I have Sony tablet S bought in Sweden.
This is from settings - about tablet:
model number - sony tablet s
Android version - 3.2
Kernel version - 2.6.36.3 [email protected]#1
Build number - 1.0.001100011
I would really like to root it, because I used to some apps that need root on my phone, and I'd like to use it on tablet to.
But, as I understand there is no way to root tablet with my kernel version.
The only update offered to me through System update is Android 4.0.3 update, which is, as I understand, also not rootable.
Is there a way to root my tablet?
If not, is it better to upgrade to ICS (which I'm so eager to do), or just wait?
Thank you!
Sorry if this has been asked a million times before.
Hi, I live in India and i got my tab with kernel10 too, meaning that it was supposed to be 'unrootable'. Then came an upgrade (not to ICS) to HC 3.2.1r2. I upgraded it and voila, my kernel changed to kernel5! If there is a possible update to a newer version of HC, TAKE IT. (You can find this out by checking this file for the firmware for your country) If that doesn't work, upgrade to ICS by PRE-ROOTING it (V.Imp!!!!) using condis AIO Tool.
To know how to do that refer to this thread under the ICS TUTORIAL v0.6 section.
P.S: I havent used this because I dont plan to upgrade to ICS! Use at your own risk!
---------------If I Helped, click the Thanks button!---------------
thanks for answer
I did see people upgrade to another HC update and they get another kernel build.
But to me it is only offered ICS upgrade. And I have no options but "update" and "later".
Is there some other way to upgrade to another HC update?
your first link doesn't work. it says 410 - gone
Restart your browser and retry the link i can assure you that the link works fine
Couldn't open it
but I guess you posted link to this http://dl.xda-developers.com/attach...8abf29/4fd4da6b/1/1/1/0/5/7/3/HC_Tablet_S.txt
My tablet was bought ins Sweden - but I don't see Sweden on the list.
However I have this line in /system/build.prop :
ro.product.locale.region=US
How do I check my region?
I see AiO has region changer, but I don't see if it can check which region is now set?
And if I find correct region and link how can I update it?
I can't root now so I guess I would have to use Sony system update? but where do I set that link?
Yep since you have kernel 10 you won't be able to obtain root,
Just install the update it could be 3.2.1r2 and if your country is already supported you will get 4.0.3
well,
The update is 4.0.3 so I don't need luck for that.
What I want is to root tablet. That's why I didn't update yet.
I would like, if possible, to update to some other HC without build# 10 kernel, if anyhow possible, so I can root it.
Believe me there issnt a wsy to root your tablet, there would be a chance after installing 3.2.1r2 OTA but that issnt the case,
I do believe you.
just hope it's "no way for now"
I had some hopes because of this lists. I don't understand why are this links important if there's a no way to trick system update to use them.
When I saw that, I hoped there's some way. but I guess I would have found it on xda-devs if there is one.
if only I new what will be able to root first, kernel 10 or ICS.

Ok a bit of misscommunication here i think.
So you have 3.2 kernel 10?
Then install one of these, either WIFI only or WIFI + 3G
3.2.1R2 Wifi Only
http://info.update.sony.net/ST003/nbx03_011/contents/0008/signed-nbx03_011-ota-0042.002.zip
3.2.1 WIFI + 3G
http://info.update.sony.net/ST003/nbx03_014/contents/0002/signed-nbx03_014-ota-0042.004.zip
These are 3.2.1r2 installs, not sure what kernel they are but it is your best bet to obtain root. Hopefully they are not kernel 10. These are straight from sony servers so might be updated to k10.
To install go into recovery and select file of SD card.
Then run condi's AIO and select root, it wiill tell you if it can be rooted or not.....
If that works and you would like to ICS then use the program to preroot one of the following:
4.0.3 Wifi Only
http://info.update.sony.net/ST003/nbx03_011/contents/0009/signed-nbx03_011-ota-120410025.zip
4.0.3 WIFI + 3G

GOOD LUCK

P.S You could not find update as netherlands, norway, sweden, portgual are all the same file.
Have updated in my update.txt accordingly.
so I can do it after all?
Mine is WiFi only so I guess the first one would be right.
But it seems this is portugal/netherland version?
Mine was bought in sweden. but in build.prop there's something about US, so I'm not sure which region it actually is.
so, why this version? Is it really the right one?

Yes I am sure, I am the orignal finder of atleast half of the update files ++++++ Condi decrypt that update and confirmed the are all the same.
You can check the nbx03_011 (wifi only) under build.prop if you like.
Tablet will not update unless it is the correct file anyway. Just do as previous post says and you MAY get root. (Still not sure of 3.2.1R2 kernel version, but heres hoping.)
Please let me know how you get on......
P.S I help others as I have no chance at root atm but have had it before lol
P.S.S You know how to get into recovery???
OK,
thank you very much
it is downloading now, but it's late here so I won't try it tonight.
I will definitely post results here.
Rooted...but unable to install ICS
Hi, I just bought a Tablet S and also found it was a HC kernel 10 build. I figured I would try the HC 3.2.1R2 update (for my region), update went fine and now I am on a kernel #6 build, which with condi's tool is now rooted.
Now if I could only get the bloody thing to accept the ICS rom I've created with condi's tool everything would be great. The AIO tool tells me everything has gone fine, and then on the final leg, as I try to flash my signed rom, I just get installation error. Over and over again.
Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong? I've searched the thread but been unable to obtain a working solution.
Thanks
I updated 3.2.1R2 wifi only
I now have kernel version 2.6.36.3 [email protected]#1
And it is successfully rooted.
Thank you!
I will just write a few problems I had.
It could save somebody some trouble
update procedure:
How to enter recovery: power off, hold volume+ and power, when sony sign shows release power keep holding volume+
find the right update on stifilz's list:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1687429
put it on SD card, enter recovery and update.
problems with drivers:
I had some problems with driver installation for windows XP
I first managed to install MTP driver packed with AiO 4.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1515720
I had to use "have disk" method ("I will chose driver to install" or something like that)
I then installed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1488822&highlight=xp+driver
but some driver (I guess for ADB) couldn't be installed
then I found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27322762#post27322762
I just went to device manager, right clicked to yellow icon, clicked update driver, chose location where I unpacked this, and juhuuuu... it's working!!

Great to hear, now you can do the same to ICS if you wish. By pre-rooting adding backdoor etc @ condi's AIO thread, then you can always revert back to HC 3.2.1R2 if you don't like ICS.

Can i root? and if yes, how?

Unfortunately, no. You cannot root your tablet's Android 4.0.3 (release2a).
Will it be possible in the future? I mean, is anyone working on it?

Only a prophet will tell you what the future will bring. All I will say is I have seen people saying they are or will be working on rooting the unrootable versions of Android used on Sony's tablets or better yet, unlocking their bootloaders. My own efforts towards those goals have so far met with brick walls. My current efforts involve discovering the methods used by Sony's technical service for restoring a tablet back to factory condition with a rootable version of Android installed.

This thread is old. The new root method mentioned all over general forum will work. Still lost... see my faq in signature
I found this thread with google when I tought that the root of my version was not possible: I have tried with this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...6#post33470626
but the root didn't happen.
I have followed all the steps in the video, everything was ok untill the part when it says to type \data\local\tmp\onload.sh .
The problem was that the tablet didnt show automatically the terminal screen.
So I unlocked the tablet, nothing was showed, I found anyway the app "terminal", I launched it, in the blue screen I typed the first sentence ( \data\local....) there was a lot of error messages after pressing enter, I anyway tried to put even the second sentence, a lot of errors, so when I pressed any key to conitnue in cmd the method said "ok you are rooted have fun" but there was no root anyway,
It wiped all the application, even Play Store app has been wiped....I had to make a factory restore....
So my question now is: which method do you think is suitable for my version? Manual?
Thanks

The instructions are pretty clear once you have your phone rooted with Clockworkmod. It only takes a small number of steps and a couple of minutes.
This is the thread for the ROM

Just download the rom you want from dev section, place on sdcard and flash via CWM same as you would any other rom.
So i am trying to root my verison J320 phone, and im having a couple issues, for one i cannot find a stock rom with the correct build number, always has a PP in the middle or doesnt end with PL1, so i am uncertain what stock rom will be safe to grab, and i dont want to experiment with rooting it to much untill i have a solid stock rom, i found one that might be correct but it was a zip folder and i p much have to work with odin. any rate if anyone could provide me with a link to the correct stock rom that would be awesome, also if anyone knows a posible root option for this that would be nice, have tried king and kingo root both PC and Android version, havent even wasted my time trying framaroot because it has never worked for any phone i have ever owned, i found a CF autoroot for the SM-J320R4, but again not really wanting to gamble on that working untill i at least have a solid stock rom for backup
No heckling about me being stupid enough to buy a verison phone when i basically require root, i know it was stupid, i live in an area where verison is the only reliable carrier so my options are VERY limited here, i have been using phones with no signal in half the places i go for a year and im sick of it, so i want to make this bastard work.
i dont mind custom OS, hell i love custom OS, so that is also an option, my bootloader is locked so odin only please, any workarounds to unlock my bootloader and possibly get rid of knox will also be gladly accepted but unless someone can find me that stock rom i am not gonna test to much as i still owe like... 180$ on this phone

Got it installed, made a call, and worked with T-Mobile. Then went to bed at night and when i woke up it asked to install an update and I hit install. After that it hasn't been able to make any more calls. I did only test that one call. So not entirely sure the update is to blame.
password?
I have the same phone but through Verizon, will this work?
