Newbe - Tablet S 4.0.3 (release2a) - can i root? - Sony Tablet S

Hi there everybody. I apologize if I am going to ask a question which has been already answered, but looking at the other threads did not help me.
I want to root my tablet S, it has been updated some days ago, and currently it is:
Android 4.0.3 (release2a)
KERNEL: 2.6.39.4 [email protected] #1
Can i root? and if yes, how?
The bloatwares and ads cripple my battery, and i want to squeeze more power from it.
Thank you in advance

Unfortunately, no. You cannot root your tablet's Android 4.0.3 (release2a).

Will it be possible in the future? I mean, is anyone working on it?

Only a prophet will tell you what the future will bring. All I will say is I have seen people saying they are or will be working on rooting the unrootable versions of Android used on Sony's tablets or better yet, unlocking their bootloaders. My own efforts towards those goals have so far met with brick walls. My current efforts involve discovering the methods used by Sony's technical service for restoring a tablet back to factory condition with a rootable version of Android installed.

wow!you have 4.03 r2a?
there is a version new then r1a ?
when do you update?
what new in r2a version?
sorry for many Qs

To the best of my knowledge, releases 1a and 2a were issued simultaneously and are virtually identical but for different regions.

This thread is old. The new root method mentioned all over general forum will work. Still lost... see my faq in signature

I found this thread with google when I tought that the root of my version was not possible: I have tried with this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...6#post33470626
but the root didn't happen.
I have followed all the steps in the video, everything was ok untill the part when it says to type \data\local\tmp\onload.sh .
The problem was that the tablet didnt show automatically the terminal screen.
So I unlocked the tablet, nothing was showed, I found anyway the app "terminal", I launched it, in the blue screen I typed the first sentence ( \data\local....) there was a lot of error messages after pressing enter, I anyway tried to put even the second sentence, a lot of errors, so when I pressed any key to conitnue in cmd the method said "ok you are rooted have fun" but there was no root anyway,
It wiped all the application, even Play Store app has been wiped....I had to make a factory restore....
So my question now is: which method do you think is suitable for my version? Manual?
Thanks

I have Spice MI 280 with 2.3.4 pre-installed.
I want to update my device to a higher version, maybe 2.3.7 which will be compatible for my device.
Please help! I am new to all this and bought a cheap phone only to learn these things. Besides, its my first Android phone and one month old. I have rooted it.
Please help me update it to a version that will be stable for my device.

Hey Ironic138! I know there aint any official update from the manufacturer.
I was wondering if there is any way to update my OS to the Google Android ver 2.3.x
Not for any specific manufacturer. Just the one that Google provides as Spice didn't launch any updates for ANY of its device...
Thanks!
Sorry, but i dont get the point. Do you mean a custom rom?
Exactly! That's the term!

Why do you need the update? Whats wrong with 2.3.4?
I think, you have to talk to the user rjunraj, he is also searching for a way to update his phone!

In few forums I saw that CynogenMOD works for most devices but then how do I know it will work for me? Whether it will be stable or not.
I know these must be Noob questions for the pro so guys please save the harsh comments. I am looking fwd to learn how on this "now-feeling-crap" phone
First of all you need the CWM Recovery. Look at this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26406717
Thats all what i can do for you!
Well your phone can defienetly not get ICS, and I don't think there is any differense between 2.3.X versions, the only thing would be if you could find a good CyanogenMod 7 custom ROM.
Thats the point, the phone has less ram and the CPU is not fast enough for ICS.
I don't really the problem with 2.3.4?!

Rooting SGPT211US/S

I recently picked up a Sony Tablet P model SGPT211US/S. It's the AT&T model, I got a really good deal on it but I've been struggling to root it. As best I can tell I've installed the drivers and the adb package. From there I've tried the all in one root tool with little luck. The tablet is running 3.2.1 and wont find any up dates to ICS.
I've done some research and there are 2 things I've found. A few times I've come across some people talking about un-rootable devices. Going from a process of elimination I'm assuming the SGPT211US/S might be one of them?
I'm extremely familiar with rooting on the Galaxy Tab and S devices. Is there some sort of similar method to Odin an ICS Firmware to the Tablet P (SGPT211US/S)? I'm a little lost here. I've even read that ICS wont come to the AT&T version of the P. I don't need the data connection and from what I've read you need to root in order to flash custom roms, which has been my experience with Samsung devices. Is there a method to flashing a stock or modified stock rom on the Tablet P similar to odin flashing to a Samsung device? Any help would be great, this one is really confusing me.

If there is no root obtained from using AIO then you are out of luck. Can you tell me your build number ie 3.2.1R2 kernel 10, from settings about. Many users have the kernel 10 issue where the exploit has been patched and we are currently awaiting a new root method.
What was the nbx02_XXX number from system/build.prop i assume it is nbx02_001. Which is normal US. Maybe AT&T have disabled OTA updates? In which case if you can find an update on the web you can apply it through recovery.

First off I appreciate the help!
Honeycomb
3.2.1
Kernel version
2.6.36.3
I'm not sure I fully follow the nb info. I don't see it.
I do see integ-build5 #1after the kernel version.
Under build number
THMAAS0015400
Baseband
R4A02
Maybe this will help determine if I'm unable to root? I might try the update through recovery, however I've read that might make it so I cant root?

Ok so you are what we call kernel5 so you should be able to root, unless AT&T have patched the root exploit. Can you try the attached program, it is the original exploit that is in the AIO tool but may help.
same tab here, it's possible to install ics, even loosing the at&t branding? I don't care

Stifilz, I had my hopes up reading your posts here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1592663&page=2) that I might be able to update to 3.2.1 and then root with AIO. When I tried installing the suggested rom signed-nbx03_006-ota-0042.004.zip using recovery, I got the following error:
Erohibit update as a result of checking version or base sku
Do you think this is because I'm currently on a 3.2 base10 kernel, because I'm trying to install a French ROM on a US tablet, or because it is a Wifi+3G ROM and this is a Wifi-only tablet? I only tried this version because it is what you suggested in another post. Is there a US Wifi-only, non-base10 version to try instead? Is there a way to tell the kernel version of a .zip without flashing it?
My tablet info is:
Model: SGPT112US/S
Android Version: 3.2
Kernel Version: 2.6.36.3 [email protected] #1
Build Number: 1.10.001100001
Best Regards.

I was able to successfully update to 3.2.1 build 5 using signed-nbx03_001-ota-0042.001.zip and then root with AIO. At least the script completed, but I'm not sure how to tell if it succeeded or not.

Little help, please
I have the same tablet P (AT&T) as the original post... About screen shows it's also build5.
I was successful using the AIO to achieve root on the Honeycomb it came with, but trying to update to ICS has gotten me nowhere.
I thought perhaps using the AIO's Region Changer combined with one of the OTA update files I found in another thread would be enough. It failed with the message about 'prohibit update because of base sku'. I then tried various combinations of fiddling with the settings on the Aio and downloading other files from different threads with no luck. Even tried that "nbx03" update even though I know this one is nbx02 and being a noob I haven't the slightest idea how to fool the device into using that update.
I'm ok with using what I have if there's really no way to upgrade, but it seems like with all the different options there SHOULD be some way. Any ideas? I'd appreciate any advice you have.
Thanks in advance.
i'v got the same problem

Couple of quick questions concerning de-rooting Tablet S

Hi,
I've got a Portuguese Tablet S (not XPeria, non-3G) that I rooted and flashed with the very first ICS that was released many months ago (the US 2.6.39.4 [email protected] #1 firmware).
While I like the new look etc, I've always felt that this rom was a lot slower and unstable than the original GB. Typing (even after going back to the default keyboard) has tons of lag, I sometimes see a screen-wide triangle while switching apps etc.
At the same time, I'm thinking about giving the Tablet S to my daughter and would like to wipe it and make it as standard as possible so she'll run into less troubles.
In a nutshell, I have 3 questions:
1) Are these bugs and slowness fixed by later official releases of ICS? Is it worth installing the release 5 he keeps suggesting?
2) If I install de OTA release 5, I expect I will lose root and I have no problem with that. Is there a risk of bricking it, though? I mean, going from a rooted to a non-rooted OTA... is that a problem?
3) Am I correct in believing that release 5 is only available in the US and I'm only getting this OTA suggestion because the Tablet's region was set to US on the old root? Is there a problem with installing r5? Will it have the Portuguese language as the current (also US FW) has?
Please let me know and many thanks for your help! :good:
Hi,
I have bought my tablet s in US but I live in Brazil. I use r5 and it has both Portugal and Brazilian portuguese.

Thanks Harerton - this is great to know! :good:
Only thing missing is asking again if installing r5 OTA will just unroot the Tablet S (which is ok by me) or brick the thing. Can anyone shed light on this?
Cheers!

Yes, you will lose root access if you update your Sony Tablet S to 4.0.3r5. If you can wait until mid-December, Sony will be issuing a world-wide 4.0.3r5a update for the Sony Tablet S.

A few questions about rooting from a newb

I am thinking about rooting my nvidia SHIELD tablet and i had a few questions about rooting. I've never done it so I won't understand any fancy terms you guys might know.
1. When I root it can I update the software at the release date. (ex. say I have 4.4 kitkat and I was rooted. lolipop comes out. Can I upgrade the day it comes out or do I need to wait for a root version or something?)
That's all for now THANKS GUYS!
You will not be able to use googles default update mechanism. Depending on the rom you have to update manually...

Oh so what exactly is a ROM? Is CyanogenOS a ROM or am I incorrect?

Samsung-SM-J320V Root

So i am trying to root my verison J320 phone, and im having a couple issues, for one i cannot find a stock rom with the correct build number, always has a PP in the middle or doesnt end with PL1, so i am uncertain what stock rom will be safe to grab, and i dont want to experiment with rooting it to much untill i have a solid stock rom, i found one that might be correct but it was a zip folder and i p much have to work with odin. any rate if anyone could provide me with a link to the correct stock rom that would be awesome, also if anyone knows a posible root option for this that would be nice, have tried king and kingo root both PC and Android version, havent even wasted my time trying framaroot because it has never worked for any phone i have ever owned, i found a CF autoroot for the SM-J320R4, but again not really wanting to gamble on that working untill i at least have a solid stock rom for backup
No heckling about me being stupid enough to buy a verison phone when i basically require root, i know it was stupid, i live in an area where verison is the only reliable carrier so my options are VERY limited here, i have been using phones with no signal in half the places i go for a year and im sick of it, so i want to make this bastard work.
i dont mind custom OS, hell i love custom OS, so that is also an option, my bootloader is locked so odin only please, any workarounds to unlock my bootloader and possibly get rid of knox will also be gladly accepted but unless someone can find me that stock rom i am not gonna test to much as i still owe like... 180$ on this phone

Got it installed, made a call, and worked with T-Mobile. Then went to bed at night and when i woke up it asked to install an update and I hit install. After that it hasn't been able to make any more calls. I did only test that one call. So not entirely sure the update is to blame.
