Hi guys...
Well today I first time used Kies. It was just for curiosity as I do all things via Odin.
However, I encountered strange thing. My SGS II got upgrade (from 4.0.3 >4.0.4), which is strange as Software Update in the phone kept saying No Update. So I let it do the business and the plugged in my SGS III and surprise : NOT SUPPORTED via Kies.
Not a big deal, as I said using Odin, but it's strange , isn't, that newest device and not supported.
Anyone had similar "experience" ???
Attached pics from both devices.
Note : noticed that the SIM lock status code ( *#7465625#) doesn't work anymore on both phones. Is there something "hidden" in 4.0.4 fw?
Do you have a custom rom installed? Because I had kies installed from when I had my sgs 1 and plugged in my gs 3 and it worked no problems ,offered to update my firmware but I did it OTA with wifi.
The only time I have seen the problem that your having is when i had custom or roms from another country installed, Unless your kies installation is corrupted which I doubt because it is working for your sgs2.
I also updated my s3 with no problems via kies before I custom I applied custom Rom perhaps try reinstalling kies/check for updates

Hi, no custom ROM installed. I got my S III from Vodafone. What I did straight out of box was flashing generic (not branded) ROM via Odin. Phone is OK, with great battery life, however I noticed another thing - it's working on G rather than H+ (I have full coverage)...

And another thing, with S II... After updating with Kies its serial number is all 0's...

May be flashing the rebranded version is causing this. There has to be some mis-match happening. Kies simply wouldn't say that simply.
By serial number, you mean IMEI???

Hi, no IMEI is ok thanks God  , but serial number is changed. It's in the About phone - Status - and scroll down. It's second last option...
Kies and Mountain Lion
I purchased a new galaxy S3 yesterday, 4 August to compare this device against my iPhone 4s.
I downloaded the latest version of Kies from Samsung's site and attempted to install it on my iMac running the Mountain Lion OS.
It would not load and came up with a message that Kies for MAC only supports up to OS 10.7
I have Googled the problem and it seems to be a common problem on ML 10.8
Hopefully Samsung come up with an update a.s.a.p
Any suggestions?
can't backup gs3 with Kies, it stucks when the backup starts. any suggestions?
I tried to update kies, it happens with stock rom too.

Man, you was right . The problem was that I had ROM for different country (NEE). Now flashed latest ROM with correct country code (BTU) and all OK. Kies recognized the phone and confirmed it has the latest official ROM available.Right now doing Restore to see if Kies can be usefull in the future

Its not stuck , depends on the size of your stuff it may look as "frozen" but need few minutes... My back up is about 9.8 GB and it took 5-7 minutes to start back up process. Same for restore...

You answered your own question
Kies supports MAC til 10.7 and Lion is 10.8... So only thing you need is patience till Samsung release update which is compatible with Mac ML.
But why you need Kies??? Just used it first time today, but not impressed. Did back up, but Restore "missed" apps, however the rest is ok (pics, music etc).
If you wanna flash different/custom ROM use Odin...

Sorry for asking a simple question but even the o2 gurus don't know.
Do updates come via ota or do you HAVE to use kies to get updates??
Or is there only specific updates that come via ota? Ie gingerbread updates come via ota but touchwiz/Samsung updates cone through kies??
There seems to be conflicting info on the net.
Currently have unbranded s2 on o2

Kies FOTA has yet to be used by Samsung .
Samsung apps updates come OTA via the Samsung Apps widget .
jje
If I remember correctly, Samsung never licenced the OTA capability, so while you will see the Software Update in settings, you won't get any joy.
Any official updates will appear via Kies.
FOTA is a service provided by google, a paid service that is. samsung doesnt pay

love the phone, had to jump through a few hoops to get it work through linux/ubuntu as well.. Hence the FOTA update query as i dont go near a windows pc that often.
Anyways an update is needed, after emailing samsung online support team (god knows how long it took me to find this) i received this back
"Thank you for contacting Samsung and I have pleasure in providing the
following assistance.
Regarding your query, kindly note UK does not support yet OTA ‘over the air’ updates and you can kindly
check our website for further and latest updates. We would like to inform you that our engineering’s are
working on releasing a firmware over the air update for the Galaxy S II ‘GT-I9100’ but it is still not available yet;
however, any news on this matter will be made public through our website so kindly keep checking our
website for latest and further updates.
We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding.
If you require any further assistance, please contact Samsung again and
we will be more than happy to help."
if i know engineers... this may be a long * infinity amount of time
They started FOTA in sweden a few days ago for SGS2
There are several reports that this works well. You simply go to settings->about and manually check for update.
They probably launch soon in other countries as well.

This is also confirmed in Finland. First update I believe we've had since the phone was released..
This is great news for me because as a Mac user Kies does not do firmware upgrades. It will tell you the current and the new version, but no option to update... After seeing this for weeks I pulled out my thinkpad who's sole purpose is Kies.
New version of Kies came out, updated, but some driver would not get installed.. so I uninstalled, downloaded the new version and installed. Still did not work so decided to install the windows updates.. Since that was taking forever decided to kill time looking at XDA.. so I found this thread. Figured it would not work but what the heck...
Checked for software update, downloaded, installed. Done, in 10 minutes.
Good thing too as my "Kies" PC fails to boot after the windows updates......

Sounds great, I guess Samsung has released an OTA update for the "NEE" region regardless of the specific country then. If I'm right OTA should work in Denmark and Norway as well, assuming you're using stock firmware though...
So are these OTA's being delivered by Samsung or by your carrier??

This is done via the Samsung account (you need to create one when searching for udpate the first time). So these are delivered by Samsung at least in that sense.
But also carrier specific firmwares in general are released by Samsung (via Kies).
FOTA Didn't work for me. Kies is not loading.
I will stay with 2.3.
t-mobile (austria) got FOTA update today http://fota-dn.ospserver.net/firmware/MAX/GT-I9100/FW-20120418-89510.bin ? strange version date ? for galaxy SII (bin file is a zip archive with delta_ files...)
Yup...updates over the Air FOTA is real
But you can update your phone firmware via Kies as it is considered to be more safe...

hi, got some information about fota device register. (http://pastebin.com/byVGYzbb) only question is how to get the OAUTH_CONSUMER_SECRET, think it must be stored somewhere on the device or included in some library...
hints welcome
edit (21.10.2012): found some password and user id in wssdmdatabase.db (table profile) (some data is unchanged after factory reset, but [*nonce] is changed)...

Hey guys
I have a problem...
My Galaxy S2 is currently running this firmware with Android 2.3.4:
GT-I9100_XEN_I9100CEKI2_I9100XENKH1_I9100XXKI1
CSC = XEN
I get told that there is an update waiting in OTA , so I let it download, reboots, starts to install, then fails, reboots, tells me to try via KIES or contact Samsung.
But when I go into Kies... there is no button to let me update my firmware... it just tells me my current firmware version, nothing else like it usually would...
Not custom ROM, no root, battery 100%. Wifi/HSPA makes no difference.... any advice? My friend has the same phone with the same firmware and it works fine with him?
Suggestions?

Hi,
I just bought S3 GTI9300 unlocked phone from amazon and this being my second phone and to save some dollars i am going with prepaid option and NO data plan.
Samsung USA Support say that they won't support this phone as it is not manufactured in US and probably Kies may not detect any software upgrades.
Can some one confirm the same and in case if it is true then what are my options for upgrades with out a Data plan when Andriod 4.1 - Jelly Bean is released for S3.
Appreciate your help on this.
You can flash whatever custom rom you like when jb hits.. There will be stock roms from samfirmware etc to just download and flash with odin, no worries
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Thank You
Thank you very much for your reply and advice .I will open the package now
it's international sgs3. sure there will be stock rom for OUR device for JB.
Kies or OTA should recognize the phone and offer firmware updates .
Firmware will be for the original product code and location ..
jje
It worked.
Hi JJEgan,
I opened the package today and inserted the prepaid sim card and it worked and moreover in an hour I was able to connect to Kies thru home wifi and it detected the software upgrades and applied 24MB of the same.
Thank You for your post and it worked as you mentioned. Can you please clarify if Jelly Bean will also be detected the same way as it detected the firmware or they are both different.
Appreciate your help on this.

You will get the JB update when it comes out. And this will be available on KIES as well as OTA(if Samsung releases it OTA as well). It does not matter where you Galaxy S3 is located, it only matters where it is from.
Thank you very much
Thank you for your response. That really answered my main concern about buying a international unlocked phone.
Note:In my previous reply i mentioned Kies but actually update was from OTA.
Hi, I picked up an sgs3 the other day. The firmware on it is XXLF2. I was just wondering what the experiences were with regards to OTA update? Is it recommended or would flashing the latest LG8 fw for UK via Odin be better?
Thanks for any advice.
One of the reasons why it might come in handy to restore a previous update could be due to the fact that the new update will not be optimized for our phone and waiting for the release of a more stable version, use Odin may serve us to go back. A very recent example is the first update to Android 4.0.3 on Galaxy S2 where there were several people who wanted to go back to Gingerbread ... Of course, another reason could be that we want to load a firmware later, but that in our country has not yet been made available ... see Notes Galaxy and the German ROM which runs the network.
But Odin is not only original Samsung firmware to load, but also allows you to load ROM cooked in order to have more personalized and optimized.
Odin's software runs on Windows PCs, and lets you do the above, but now we see how the program works.

Nice1 thank you devid801. I've used Odin to flash ROMs on my sgs1 but the OTA update on sgs3 has me interested Suppose I could always flash via Odin the latest FW if OTA FW isn't the latest.
Thanks again mate.
we say that the telephone operators are slow to release updates, even compared to the parent, so if you do not want to wait using odin! read a guide before, and you always make a nandroid backup before making any operation. ..

Odin is beeing used in official service and repair centers to flash samsung firmware
As always two paths for ease of use one via Samsung Kies or OTA .
OTA will probably fail on rooted phone .
Join XDA flash stock firmware as and when you want .
My view is if you want to stay with Samsung /official path then do so but its the attempts to mix and match that lead to trouble .

Thanks jje. I think i'll stay stock for now but see what update OTA offers me Saying that, XXLF2 fw does not seem bad so far.
Will look to find what the differences are between LF2 and LG8 fw.

I have recently flashed my Orange GS3 to XXLF2. I'm not getting any OTA updates post flashing and i know there is an update that gives you the option to auto aujust brightness on the drop down. Is this normal after flashing? Or has something gone a bit wrong?

You no longer have Orange firmware .
You no longer have phone codes that match any upgrade .
Their is no upgrade for your phone model
Plus all the other usual answers .
Choice flash roms from XDA or return to Orange for an update .

I have searched and cant find an answer ...
I have a completely stock , non rooted and sim free UK S3.
I got the terrible 4.3 update and suffered for a few weeks like the rest of us.
I then got the OTA MK6 25mb update which has thankfully given me back a phone I like.
However... I now have one small issue ....
If I connect my phone to Kies it says ...
Your current firmware version is not supported by kies for firmware update.
Current firmware version : PDA:MK6 / PHONE:MK6 / CSC:MK6 (BTU)
Why is this happening and what does it mean ?
Thanks

Ah ok. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
