I have been doing some searching and reading on the random reboot issue but I have not found a solution.
We are a repair/resale shop and we currently have 27 HTC Aria's that are all doing the random reboot thing. It can happen as frequently as every 5 minutes. I have a hunch that it may be an issue based on location. Possibly only in LTE markets?
I am trying to gather some feedback and see if we can find a solution to this problem. Any feedback or advice would be greatly appreciated.
I'd imagine the issue is probably caused by one of two things. (That is, these are the two possibilities that seem logically consistent with what people have reported about it on this forum so far. I don't even use my Aria anymore so I am not speaking from personal experience here.)
1) Change made by AT&T to their network in certain areas. Maybe LTE-related, maybe something else. Only real way to be sure about this is if someone took an Aria that works fine to a different city and it started to reboot, or vice versa.
2) Bug with internal clock. (Something similar to the leap year bug that affected the older PS3s.)

I use a Samsung Infuse now but last phone was Aria with CM7 when the phone started with the reboot hiccups. I went back to stock, hiccup, hiccup... Today I played around with it and finally got CM9 on it. It's been charging most of the day so I haven't seen it hiccup yet. And I don't live in LTE area, so that isn't it from my perspective.

I tried virtually everything, rooting/un-rooting, stock HTC Sense Froyo, CM 7 & 9, and even two trips to HTC to have the main board changed under warranty. I finally tried a T-Mobile sim card (after SIM unlocking the new main board) and the rebooting stopped! I then got a new AT&T sim and it worked, no rebooting.
What's really strange is that the phone still randomly reboots when running without a SIM. One more thing: I have two Arias with the same problem, only the other one was out of warranty and therefore was not "repaired" by HTC. The new sim cards fixed the problem - including a European sim and an AT&T sim that was not activated.
Go figure.

Came home today to find the Aria in one continuous CM9 animation page. More like the energizer bunny just going and going and...battery is now sitting next to the phone.

You might try turning on Airplane mode to see if that stops the reboots if you think it's LTE or SIM card related.
Alternatively you can try to put the SIM card off the phone, just to be sure.

Did this ever get resolved? I'm having the same issue. I noticed it after putting a liberated Sense rom with 2.2.2 on it that I found on the forums.
It had CM7 when I got it, but I didn't use it long enough to see the issue, so IDK. Trying CM6 now to see what happens.
Just get a new sim card. Their free!

Getting a new SIM card did not fix the problem for me.

I've got a Vibrant (Galaxy S) I recently bought off craigslist. It seemed to work pretty well when I first got it and gave it a factory reset. After about a week i noticed that people kept texting me to "pick up your phone" but the problem was it never rang, never even showed a missed call. If I restarted the phone, made a phone call, then everything would work fine for a few hours, then no more calls would come in. I've tested this in soooo many ways only to find that the trigger appears to be the data connection. I did try disabling data and every call went through just fine until data was restarted.
I've hypothesized that when my phone connects to data it is blocking the normal cell phone service, and never giving the phone priority back until I make an outgoing phone call.
I've tried redoing the factory reset, upgrading to Froyo with keis, Rooting & flashing Nero ROM (which is fantastic BTW), adding phone prioritizer script, running taskkiller, messing with various settings and I am getting nowhere.
I am somewhat new to how the samsung works hardwarewise (I'm coming from an HTC Dream G1) and really need some suggestions. I've been drawing blanks after Googling for days!! Please help!!

I will try flashing a modem and post results in a bit, but so far I've been unable to understand what a modem is. Is that like a Radio or SPL? (again I am more familiar with G1 lingo)
Alright, flashed kb1 modem. Working so far, I can receive calls and interrupt data session (market download, map, facebook, etc) I'll update if problem persists.

Update: Still using KB1 modem (battery slightly worse) and BionixV
Went for a trip away from the house this weekend and calls went through flawlessly, so I'm thinking this could be a coverage issue.
However, whenever I turn data off at home, phone calls always work and I always have at least 2 bars. So probably some sort of a hardware issue? I still feel like it get's hung up on data hardware and isn't switching to cell phone mode.
Still looking for more ideas or contacts. Should I pursue contacting Samsung? Am I outta luck with this being a craigslist find?
Had a buddy with access to small tools and some chip diagnostic equipment root around inside the phone. He said he found "3 circuits are shot all pins" Personally I don't know how a phone continues to work after that? Anyway, looks like I got burned on this craigslist find.
So if you have this problem, get a new phone... I'm just gonna pretend it is a mini tablet for now.

I also think it's killing my battery since it's constantly searching for a signal for checking e-mail and stuff? Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem or it's my phone? I think I figured out when the data drops. The phone will lag to the point of inoperability, then the phone for some reason has trouble reconnecting to the tower. the only thing I have found to fix this is a factory data reset. I have been lucky enough to reboot in airplane mode sometimes which helped once or twice. Or to reload a rom. I just dont know how to fix it? I had my phone warranty replaced due to this issue and it still remains on new phone. I am somwhat pissed myself

Happens to me randomly specially when searching in Map app. Phone starts lagging and I have to reboot. After reboot it shows No entry like sign in status bar. Nothing works, I tried rebooting, reinstalling same rom, new rom, new modem. What works is take out battery and reinsert it. Thought I got a bad phone, but now it seems others have this issue too?
Im just south of chicago and I usually have to download my apps 2 or 3 times to actually get them installed. I noticed that after you choose to download and it spits you back out in to the menu. Reclick the app you just installed if there isno statusbar you are not trully downloading it.

In addition my GPS has been extra sucky lately, went from being able to lock 8 inside to usually not locking at all. Nothing I've tried has fixed it, but then randomly it'll work just fine. I can't reliably reproduce the problem.

This is the second vibrant that I have had this problem on, So I want to say software, unless I got 2 phones with the same problem. The EDT gps fix makes my gps lovely when I have a data connection. I know that heathen has also made a flashable data fix which would at least stop from having to do a data reset, and reinstalling all apps. Unfortunately the data fix is rom specific and not a universal deal. Anybody with more experience know why many vibrants have this intermittent problem???
Since I unrooted I have had no data drops, but cannot fully unlock the potential of the device, has anyone heard if a way to maintain stable data thru root?
Thanks

I am having issues since the phone was updated from Froyo to Gingerbread. The Atrix is rooted and using Go Launcher. The phone worked great under Froyo not a problem once I updated to Gingerbread I am getting the following issues listed below.
1. Screen will randomly freeze nothing will work unless I select he power button and then wait a couple of seconds it will start working again.
2. The keyboard will randomly display the letter q when I am typing in any text field
I have tried wiping the phone twice which including going into recovery mode and wiping cache as well as doing a full reset. Everything will be fine and then it will start again. I then decided to google up Gingerbread Freezing phone thru google and it seems like everybody is having this issue since the update went through. The posts include the atrix, droid nexus and other android phones. My question is what could be causing these glitches when the phone was working perfectly the day before the update. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks Again
I've got this exact same issue to. There is no way it can be a hardware issue, if I rotate the screen, the area where there are screen ghost touches moves to the same relative place. It doesn't appear to be an uncommon problem either.
Go to the market and try SGS Touchscreen Booster.
Go for Super Optimized setting.
I had the same issue but this app fixed it for me. I have posted a couple of times about it so just check the threads I have contributed to on my profile for more info.

Replacment of Freezing Phone
I received the replacement and so far it has not had the issues of lag and freeze but now I have border banding on both replacement phones and I am now awaiting my 4th atrix. I am actually getting tired of this I love the phone when it works but the quality of android phones is not up to par with the Iphone. I appreciate the open source of android but the phones from motorola, HTC etc are just mass produced with no quality there is not phone everyday and what happens unlike apple they refuse to support any phone thats older than three months

Have you guys tried the "PDS partition" fix? Basically, flashing could corrupt a file or 2 in there, causing keyboard problems. Very common in people with unlocked bootloaders (so they flash more than people who are locked).

Did this worked for you? im also having that issue with the touch screen, i have done Pds partition, flashed several roms, wipes, etc. And now for art of magic it does not do the freeze glitch touch screen thing that often, but sometimes it does it but not for too long.
I read from the web that is a Sync internet problem, like consuming cpu or some thing causing that glitches freezes. Still waiting for final fix or workaround :/.
Like previous users this problem happens to me even navigating throu screens moving around, also in the keyboard (wich now i replaced with smart keyboard pro original from the market) this keyboard seems to helped not to have that glitches so often dont know im just saying.
No answears : ( i tried freezing motoblur process some of them, and those freezes of the touch screen were reduced but not eliminated.
Just a small observation
I am the person who suffered the most from this intermittent issue.
After my intensive testing and tracking I have came to a conclusion!!
I'm on CM7. Not sure if this would help.
I guess the issue is caused because of the light sensor. Somehow, when I disabled the automatic backlight settings this has improved a lot!!!!
Try disabling automatic backlight (even if you are not on CM7) and let me know if this have helped.
simialar issue
Have experienced the letter q being ghist hit while typing on Atrix 4G. My big issue is with the phone randomly power cycling on its own, ever since a March update I believe. I have sent the phone in to Motorola twice, both times received it back doing the same thing. They have sent me a new battery to rule that out, that did not work either. Now they have sent me a new "refurb" hand set, an hour and twenty minutes after turning it on it power cycled. The Atrix, as much as I loved it, is driving me crazy at this point. Motorola are now offering to change it for the Atrix 2. Anybody have any idea what could be causing the random power cycle issue?
I've had this phone for about 10 days. On Wednesday morning I awoke to the phone displaying a no SIM message at the top of the screen. I found this thread in the One X forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1581349
I'm guessing that since these phones are so similar construction wise the issue I'm having is probably the same. Here's what I know so far. The first instance happened after some heavy gaming. To remedy it I restarted the phone. The second instance randomly occured while the phone layed on its back. Once again I remedied it by restarting the phone. Third instance happened sometime overnight. This time the remedy was switching on/off airplane mode.

Umm I did search... Hence the link posted up above. Perhaps "one x+ no SIM" is not adequate. What are you searching on where you find the discussion that was brought up before?

As suggested in other threads, I cut out a piece of a post-it note, stuck it on the back of the sim and I haven't had the issue since.
I decided to call HTC. They are mailing a new SIM tray to try. They advised if it does not remedy the issues to contact att and have the phone replaced as it sounds like the SIM card reader itself is defective. As suggested by the rep the phone is designed to work without postit notes and something is defective which is causing the problem.

As Lloir Said this has been answered several times, including by myself. The problem is hardware related. The sim card sits in the tray loose and every so often manages to wiggle its way out. DO NOT try and fix this by restarting the phone. I am sure it will not break anything but this is not a fix in the least bit. Pop the card out re seat it and place it back in. I have not had an issue in weeks since doing this. Other recomend a postit or tape, do so at your own risk. You would feel pretty stupid if something got stuck in there.
I used a piece of a sticker and stuck the sim to the tray after getting the error for a week. This was about a month ago and I haven't received the error since.
People say to use a piece of paper or something of that nature, but I would feel pretty sketchy about removing the sim one day and the paper not coming out with it.
I was actually able to shake my phone lightly and hear the sim card rattle around. Even placing my phone flat on its back and playing music or sounds from the speaker would be enough to rattle the sim around. Definitely Hardware issue.

I've had this happen two times to me and just restarted the phone, both times happened with a couple days of each other but this was at least 2 weeks ago. Why do you not recommend restarting the phone? Is it just because its not a real fix or could it do some sort of damage to the phone?

I said right in the post it will not break it. restarting the phone does not fix the fact the card is loose hence why it happens more frequently when restarting versus popping the card out and re-seating it.
Have had this device since the day it came out and not sure if i noticed this issue right off the bat but the last month or so it is now almost an everyday problem. I will get a text message say at 2pm. Then again say at 2:30pm will get a new text message notification, open it and see it is the same exact text message i got at 2pm and it is also time stamped at 2pm even though it is now 2:30pm. This will happen maybe 3-4x all within a 4hr window. This will happen regardless what network the sender is on, can be ATT, Verizon, etc. No real pattern to this issue, i live in an area with literally full 4g network everywhere.
Also i will sometimes get delayed text messages. Say it's 1pm and i get a new text message notification. I check it and the time stamp on it is 12:40am even though that was 20min ago and i'm just now receiving the text message even though this whole time i was in full 4g network?
I don't know if this is a bunk device or maybe bad sim card. Spoke with AT&T numerous times and I swear I don't know where the hell they find these people as they can't find their thumb from their a$$hole it seems like they are so clueless. All they want to do is master reset, that doesn't work then they offer to mail me a replacement device. I flash roms so that in itself i would think in a way is a master reset.
Is there a way maybe to check my network settings on my device and if so what should they be for AT&T in the USA? I use Elegancia roms using the ATT network settings he has in place and no one else is having this issue which makes me think maybe it's a bad sim card or just bunk device as this issue seems to get worse by the day now. First i happened maybe twice a week, now it's more like twice a day.
I can easily get a replacement phone but really want that as a last resort. Not looking forward to unlocking, rooting, etc all from scratch again unless there's no other option and i really do have a bad device.
I have had the same issue, it was pretty bad on stock as sometimes I would get a message hours later as well as multiple messages. Using the Elegancia ROMs has somewhat helped, but it still happens from time to time.

This has just started happening to me within the past few days on stock. So far it's only been with 2 or 3 text messages, but it's interesting to see that I'm not the only one having this issue. Could it be a carrier issue?
My understanding and this could all be BS is that android doesn't have a full good push system. Instead it is a pull system based on periodic checks to the provider carriers.
So if u are scheduled to check text at 1230 and get one at 1201 then u don't get notification until 1230.
I think u can always change the frequency of your checks but it's just more data usage or battery drain.

That's not how it works, atleast not that long
Your phone typically checks for texts/calls every 3 seconds not every 30 minutes
There used to be a setting you could access to change this, but I know the default is 3
The problems these people are having are network issues
Slithered from my HTC One X+
I've had this issue and engaged ATT about it extensively. They swear up and down it's not a network related issue or a issue with the rom. They replacement my phone with a refurb, still same issues. They just sent me a replacement sim card (which I just got today but have yet to pick it up from the front office).
Doubt any of this will fix the issue. But yea, it sucks.

Well seems very odd unless nation wide ATT is doing major network changes. I'm in LA California unless all u live here too with the same problem but unlikely. I've been with ATT since 2004 and had many smartphones since and never had this issue until this device about a month after buying it.
I'm going to try the SIM card replacement and see what that does. If no correction then Mayne I can prolong this til the HTC One comes out and get my phone replaced with that! Wishful thinking but seriously WTF?

May I ask if you are using the HTC message app or a 3rd party app? Or both at the same time? Also is this issue the same for all your contact sending you a text? Or just some of them?

Using stock htc messaging. It's random, really no pattern. Sometimes it happens when texting my wife, sometimes not. Same with other contacts. Even when AT&T sent me a test text it was sent twice as a duplicate.
Have you try to eliminate completely the HTC Message app (you can do so via Aroma or with TB), and installing a third party app to verify if this issue is still occurring?
I guess it was a joke thinking a new SIM card would fix the issue. As soon as the ATT rep put the new SIM in, about 10 minutes later get the ATT text. Then 15min later get a new text message and what do u know, it's a duplicate!
Only other thing I can think of is doing a full master reset, new install of the Elegancia 4.4 Rom with full wipe. This is what I usually do but then restore my data via TWRP Data backup. This time I'll try the above WITHOUT doing the data restore and see if that makes any difference. If not then I guess it's device replacement time.
I don't see how it would only be the HTC messaging app as many people use it on the same Rom as me and/or same android OS version of me and they are not having this problem.
Pretty convinced it's maybe the antennas in my device went bad or maybe my data restore is causing network complications?
See screenshot and see time above and time received second text, duplicate still.
I remember having issues long time ago with another device practically as yours and the issue was effectively an issue with the restoration.
As for the third app choice, well, it's a way of testing if something could be conflicting with the HTC Message app. Your choice for not testing.

Just wanted to test out other things first and maybe that last as I feel that's the last thing that could he causing this. So far after a full wipe and fresh Rom install, no duplicates yet. Tested multiple people all day for better testing and no issues yet. Will report back...
Same thing happens to my HOX+... 100% exactly as described. I'm using stock Rom and stock messaging app (Rooted and TWRP recovery).

Have u found any fixes? Surprised all these people coming out the wood work with the same exact issue as me but I'm the first to post about it.
Update for me well all went well for about 5 days then boom, freakin dupes came back. I did a fresh install, full wipe, zero restore, all from scratch. I was so happy thought it was fixed then the other day when the wife texted me it came in 3x that day all at difference times hut of course with original time stamp.
Only other thing I can think of is to get my device replaced but just hate to go through the whole unlocking process again and transferring music, etc onto new device and zagg screen replacement... Damn HTC, what r u doin?!?
i know CM10.1 aint stable yet, but you can use it for sms n stuff, can you see if this happens on that rom for me please (CM10.1 ATT/TELUS)

I used your AT&T CM 10.1 ROM for 3 days and had no SMS/MMS issues at all. I did add a custom APN with the help of tweaker. The new APN allowed the MMS messages to download faster. The ROM is smooth and fast. I needed my phone app so reluctantly I had to revert back to a sense ROM. Thanks for your hard work on this device.

No doubt it's a network issue. I live in Alaska and have the same problem along with everyone else I know who has att, including people with iphones.
