Ok , a co worker is selling a 32G almost new touchpad. I really want to buy this since i missed out on the firesale and he is offering at the same price as he bought it for and also CM devs are working on it and judging by the videos i saw, i see a lot of potential.
Now since you guys are already on it and some of you have installed CM7 on it, i want to know if its a good investment as I intend to use it only with android. I know its still in alpha and developing stage, but is the hardware really worth the investment ?
Or should I hold on for a few more months and then buy something better ?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Well if he's asking for 150 that's a steal people these days are dying for a deal like that

yeah definitely jump on it.
and then send it to me.
thanks

I've got the alpha loaded on mine, haven't messed with it to much but the major things are working no problem. My opinion, buy it! Great investment. Maybe its the CM7 team being humble or my ignorance but this build looks like it is closer to beta than alpha, my opinion
Edit: As far as the hardware, everything on it is great, except the camera. Its kinda crappy in either OS. The speakers are loud and clear. I had the processor('s) overclocked to 1.5ghz normally but up to 1.7 and it was stable, that was in webOS only, haven't got that far in Android. The one thing I like about the touchpad over other tablets, and it may seem gimicky, but the Touchstone built in inductive charging. I'm not to familiar with other official Android tablets, but the lack of expandable memory on the touchpad kinda stinks, but theres enough cloud services and what not to cover that. The list goes on, overall, theres a lot more positives than negatives on this device. No regrets!
Thanks guys. Really appreciate the honest answers. I actually got my hands on it today and im pretty impressed.
I think i'll buy it and 150 is a steal like you guys pointed out. Cant wait to get on the development forums and start messing around with the CM7.
Thanks guys!
Definitely get it. I bought one during the firesale and had doubts about webOS. Now I love it. I also have a Asus Transformer but I have only used it 2 or 3 times since I got the TP. I basically gave the transformer to my wife. Now I love WebOS. It is definitely more user friendly than honeycomb. I wish there were more apps, but there is still an app for pretty much everything. I hate to see how kill what palm worked so hard for, but that's the only way I would have ever experienced it, because I damn sure wasn't going to pay $600 for a tp.
Definitely get it and just give webOS a try. If you like Android I think you will be impressed with webOS. It has a look and feel like Android with a skin rather than a full separate OS. If someone could make Android apps run on the Touchpad I wouldn't be able to find a single bad thing to say about a TP at all.
Also please don't think I am any sort of palm/hp/webOS fanboy trying to troll. I am truly and Android fan and will always be, webOS has just grabbed more of my attention in the tablet space, for now. That could all change after ICS is released.
Good luck, and definitely get it. Worse case u don't like it and could still sell it for a small profit.
lol when i went to Android i kept trying to swipe up to change apps.
LOL
Hey guys! hope ur all doing well
so i am looking for a nice tablet and i feel for the hp touchpad. The problem is: Its not sold in my country so i have to buy it from Ebay. I am now wondering is 260$ worth buying the HP Touchpad? It will be 300$ including shipping, thats the cheapst i could find on Ebay. I was looking for the motorola Xoom but its very expensive..with shipping it could be 450-500$ for the Xoom. So help me out plz, should i buy it?! never owned a tablet before, and from looking at the reviews, WebOS looks awesome, so smooth and then u'll always have the chooice to put android (i think with ICS it will become even better when the source code is released) what is your thoughts? hit me!

I agree. I like Webos.. Its pretty.. Easy to use.. I like the multitasking concept.. Though I just added perfect task switcher in Android which sorta gives you the same thing though not as good. Android is clunky compared to it.. Because its made for for small screens.. But I still love it and haven't booted webos since cm7 lol...

Same here! Still getting used to the onscreen "soft keys" as well
At the fire sale price or close to it, it's a no brainer. Not even worth asking...
Worse comes to worse if you absolutely hate WebOS, you can always sell it and at very least get you money back.
So I asked for money as my Christmas present in hopes of purchasing the Prime. I have been searching YouTube, Google and this forum as well as a few others trying to gather intel. This is my first post but I have been scoping the threads out for weeks now.
I must say, a lot of wind has been let out of my sails. But honestly I am not surprised by the Wifi issues.
My hope was to snag a 32GB champagne (silver) and a transleeve. After reading all the issues on the first batch I have decided to wait until Bestbuy carries them in store. I have already ordered a clear dry-tech back and screen protector from skinomi.com and hopefully this will help the scratching caused by the transleeve but I am still not sure if I will purchase this sleeve.
I'm just curious how many out there are feeling the same as me? I expected issues with the first shipments so I am not giving up, but just disappointed to see the percentage of problems with other items such as screen pixel issues, colors, gps, etc.
I am very glad that some have invested in the technology early enough for individuals like me (and hopefully others) to hold tight, continue to research and review threads and then once purchased, feel very confident in the unit and accessories purchased. This web forum is very very helpful so thank you all for posting your comments, issues, etc.
Let's just hope Best buy gets the units in the next two weeks.
if you actually look at it there are likely alot of people who are not on xda who have the prime without issues and alot of people on xda with no issues the amount of people with issues is likely very small compared to everyone with a working one
My initial excitement has turned to more nervousness as i await shipment due to this forum. Any future product like this (phone or tablet) i will steer clear of the forums until i actually get the product. I am just glad i ordered through best buy so i can just return it to the store if there are problems. If that happens i will probably not get another one and just not buy a tablet at this point in time.
This is true, most people posting are having issues. I wouldn't do much posting if I had a working on hahaha.

I ordered mine from BB on the 23rd and after using it for a bit, I really like it. Mine had none of the issues that were reported so that's good. The only thing now is that there's a lot of lag, and probably because the 5th core is clocked pretty low but once we get some development going, the Prime's gonna be great.

I agree with the others. You've' done your research and you are prepared, but keep in mind you dont hear much from people without probems. For example, I have not even read the wifi threads because I don have a wifi problem.None-my wifi is perfectly fine. My gps is screwy but I just cant imagine a scenario whee Asus doesnt provide a solution for this.
I dont have a scratch on mine, as matter of fact there is not even a single finger print on mine. Ive left it in the plastic wrap/sleeve it came in until I find suitable case. But, its like a new car - its just matter of when, cuz it's bound to happen.
Try not to worry, you've done your homework, you know the product. Enjoy
I was a little worried like you, especially since I have myself convinced that I get a lot of lemon products.
I agree that there are likely far more satisfied Prime owners than the dissatisfied ones on xda.
I received mine today, and I must say, I am quite happy. Everything is fine. Screen's good, body is great, wifi's working fine, GPS locked on right away, and within 5 meters at that. Now, Honeycomb still has its hiccups, but that's another story, and it's not enough to bother me at the moment.
If you'll excuse me, I'm going back to my baby... =]
this is just like the news. they always reporting mostly bad stuff going on. hardly report good things. but we all know more good goes on in the world than bad stuff. its just the negative things that get the most attention. like others, I'm glad ididnt let the negative hype get to me or I would've never bought this tablet. I'm so glad I did. its the Best tablet yet.
I have a Prime with no issues. It's fast, intuitive, fun and I love it. It is my first tablet and first exposure to android, so I realize that I don't have anything to compare it to. I don't have the GPS or wifi issue, I have no light bleed, my browser is fluid and I have not run into any apps that are not compatable. It feels great in my hands - not slippery and my enclosure seems well sealed.
That said, I haven't wanted to get on here and rave about my good fortune when others are experiencing such disappointment. But I do want to make the point that when Asus gets the product right, it's a beautiful tablet that looks & feels amazing and works as designed. $500 is a difficult chunk to spend, even in good times; in my case, it was worth every penny. I wish that was so for everyone because truly, it is hard to enjoy something when you feel like the lucky exception.
I totally understand the hesitation and disappointment, but I just wanted to put it out there (for those still on the fence) that in some cases, (or I should say in MY case) it really is the tablet I was so wrapped up in anticipation of.
In hindsight, I was so petrified and worried that the tablet was going to be riddled with problems, that it has taken me a few days to really let go of the worry and allow myself to enjoy it.
mines perfect. woot!
I'm in the same boat as you, I saw this thing and was all "oh my, why hello there, dream tablet",
but as launch date for the Netherlands neared, the heaps upon heaps of complaints from the US started piling up.
Dodgy Wifi, dead GPS, flaky batterysensors, bleeding screens, vibrator motors coming loose,
all this really got my hairs up and now im on the verge of just giving up.
Ive already taken a bite from a big s*tsandwich a couple years ago by buying into one of the tablet predecessors, the UMPC,
and im afraid im going to be forking out my Christmas funds on a big ol' sour lemon.. again!
I dont want my first tablet to be a harrowing experience of failing hardware and non caring support.
Im a big fan of Asus and id blindly buy any motherboard from these fellas,
but this tablet and the nasty aura its starting to show...
meeeeh I dunno people.. what do we do now?
I would think waiting and buying it locally - where you can return it in a quick trip - might feel more like the ability to "undo" than buying it online.

Thanks for the comments! I am feeling more comfortable with my soon to be purchase. I might order the 32gb Champagne online from BB if it ever comes available, but I would prefer to get it from the store so I don't have to pay a restocking fee if exchanged.
Its more of the quick exchange without hassle I am looking for. If I have issues with it I would take it to BB and exchange it, but if I order it online and take it to the store which doesn't have any I am out of luck on getting an exchange.
About to pull the trigger on the new Prime.
Been reading for awhile about the tab, and one of my client's was lucky enough to get his by Christmas on my recommendation.
Read a bit about the "serial number" debacle, but it seems that the reseller are taking care of returns faithfully.
Just wondered what you all think of your tabs?
Anyone with buyer's remorse?
I know it's going to be tough to get an "unbiased" response, as I'm sure most of you love your tabs.
Would like a few "experienced" replies.

None from me right now. The Wi-Fi isn't fantastic but is still fully functional and the GPS is non-existant but I couldn't care less in all honesty. Don't expect Apple-esque build quality (although it's still well built) and you'll be thoroughly pleased.

Honestly I couldn'd give a rat's azz about "apple-esque" build quality, as they're pretty to look at but don't do much. Thanks for your response
I got mine yesterday. No problems so far. I was nervous as well, but im glad i purchased it. Rooted, ICS, what a beast.
I honestly love mine. It's exactly what I thought I was getting based upon all the reviews in early December.
As a serial tablet collector (Still have the Touchpad, the Galaxy tab 10.1 and the 8.9), I'd say the only reason to get it now it's to enjoy it with the keyboard dock. Got one with everything right, but no GPS and weak wifi. No big deal, but not a perfect device quality wise (like say a Samsung). I can't wait to find my own dock - for me, it will replace a netbook, hopefully.
Otherwise I don't see much reason to get it. Just my 02c.
No buyer's remorse for me & I'm coming from a Motorola XOOM. The difference is like night & day! Plus I have the keyboard dock. This tablet screams sexy!! Typing on the keyboard dock is a breeze with no lag at all.My wifi is great. I mainly use my prime downstairs & my router is upstairs & the wifi works great still
Got mine yesterday. No problems, no regrets.
I'm still searching for the "perfect" Prime (i.e., one where no component is overtly non-functioning), and will hopefully get my 4th one next week. But, I don't regret making the attempt at all, and I won't regret having bought one when I actually finally get one that I don't return.
Not being facetious here, either. Every gadget I've bought in the last two years has gone through the same process, because I like to get things on launch day. It's a sickness, because I _know_ that getting things on launch day nowadays is a dicey proposition.

love it.
I've had mine since the 29th and I have no remorse. I knew I was buying early and I am willing to go through growing pains. Brand new quad core tablet, brand new OS...I was and am prepared for a bit of a bumpy ride. I had zero expectation that this would be a 100% smooth device out of the box. But I do think it will get there soon. It's damn close now.
Being a TF101 fan but due to screen issues my last TAB was a samsung 10.1. This tab & dock are miles ahead... and build quality IMHO exceeds Apple... (see my Apple history below) Not sure about GPS I don't use it.......
Useless Thread
No, STOP MAKING THREADS LIKE THIS
I love my prime.
No regret at all. I bought mine Monday as part of a newer batch after all the initial ones sold out. I read somewhere on XDA that an ASUS rep told someone there is newer hardware that performs better or something. Whether that is true or not, I don't care, as my Prime has perfect wifi, BT, GPS, no light bleed.
If you do have an issue, it is just like any other tech, you get an RMA to have it fixed!
Coming from a Galaxy tab 10.1 I have to say this blows it away!!! Even though GPS won't lock in mine. I always disable my GPS in all my devices unless I'm lost.. NO REGRETS..

I have a little. My unit is very nicely built, equal in quality to my ipad 2 - well it's now my wife's ipad 2. I have the same problems as everyone else, no gps and wifi works but is noticably worse than my other devices. Add to that there's going to be a fixed premium version, I'd return it if I hadn't picked it up for $350(long story, one time deal).
edit: The gps doesn't matter much. I already had a very nice bluetooth gps anyway. The wifi performance bothers me. Alot. But not $250 worth, $100 worth though without question.
Happy as can be here. It made my Christmas! It was so pretty and shiny, a real thing of beauty. But like most things that seem too good to be true.............
Now, I have received full credit back on my credit card from Office Depot after my return. I'm even happier.
I thought I would start a hopefully one stop shop thread on everyone who RMA the Prime and if there were any changes / results / things better worse. Maybe having all this under one roof would help not only with searching, but help us start working together.
I'll begin.
Sent my Prime in and was received by Asus 1/14
Status: in Repair
Reason for RMA: chip on bottom, light bleed, GPS and weak Wifi
ICS installed when sent in? Yes
I may be off base but I was curious if others were getting their Primes back yet and any changes.

If you sent it in with a chip they are going to say you damaged it, and they are going to charge you to repair it.
I hope I am wrong but I think that is what will happen. Sorry to give you the bad news.
I really wasnt lookimg for that kind of response rather ones that RMA their units, get them back and if anything changes foe better or worse or problems solved.

I'd say keep it. More than likely a good one. Plus you might not be able to return it because serial numbers are changed. Then you risk damage to device trying to send it to them then them sending it back tl you. I've had my prime since 12/22 n works great. You getting a third batch one. I'd say keep it.
You know I've been on this thing since November. From the promise of the true iPad killer, then to shipping problems then an oops I can get one quick to a month on this forum with is there a problem, is there not, Asus statement on the aluminum back issue, the anger for and against the prime, the amazing thread of owners trying to do what Asus couldn't or wouldn't which is find the real issues and try to fix the (I applaud these people) put me in a Stockholm syndrome of sorts.
After receiving my Brand New Prime, I realized, hey this product is flawed whether big or small it is flawed. Do I really want to start over and be disappointed again? No! Clarity has finally set in. Maybe I won't own a tablet for a while but I'm done with Asus and this whole mess. I listed mine on eBay and finally am happy with my decision. This is the right thing for me and me alone. I will follow here and I wish great things for the others here that keep the prime. For me it was time to end the anguish.

NOOOOOOOOOO! LOL
Seriously if that's how you feel ultimately, then you doing what's right. Take it from me though, it is a great device. Mines don't have the flaws most post up here n I had mines from an early batch since 12/22. I have no regrets at all that I ordered early. If I would've waited I might have got a flawed device like these other people have.. lol. Good luck on future tablet choice n remember, no device is perfect when first launched. Even iphone4 n ipad2 were riddled with issues. Their issues was on major news on t.v. its always the luck of the draw with electronics. MAN is not perfect. And damn well no Man Made Machine is either. Man is flawed along with the toys he makes
I sent mine in because touchscreen stopped working. After I sent it in I saw in my email that jr.com item was shipped. Check what it was and it was the 64gb version. I forgot I had that preordered. Seems better but I started having problems with the stock keyboard. I switched to thumb keyboard and everything was fixed. I might sell other on eBay, don't need 2 of them at least for now. They seem to be selling retail for lightly used. I thought 7 days waiting for status to change on repair was long. The other guys been waiting almost a month.
Just one year after, the Prime development is dead. Two roms have been updated a month ago and much appreciated work on them. But that's about it. What was once the tablet of the future, Asus made it a flop, A $500 flop at that. How poor, I'll never buy another Asus tablet or PC again. I had mine since day one and have no problems with. I wish everyone could say that.
Thank you for your contribution. We definitely needed another one of these threads.
Long live the Prime!

This is not true. lilstevie and tux_mind are VERY close to perfecting an Ubuntu dual boot. Think about it, Volume Up to boot Android; Volume Down to boot Ubuntu. That would be the coolest thing in the history of things. This is what I have been waiting for since 2008. Sooo... STFU.
Prime is dead
Mine truly is----at ASUS RMA facility for the third time since purchase
first 2 times wif-bluetooth issue in shop for 1.5 months
this time green camera
Truly a 500$ 650 if you count the dock peice of c***
There are very few primes around in my country so i don't care if its dead, i have a special device and its working perfectly.
But i think my next tablet (i hope the prime works for a long time) will be one with a digitizer for pens. Like the galaxy note 10.1. In my situation i prefer that over a keyboard.
Long live the prime.
I've had mine since day one. Never had reason to complain about it at all. Two friends have bought them after seeing mine. Still use it every day. I wish I had two.

I think that the Development is very slow mostly because around a 50% of users have their Bootloader locked, so lots of people couldn't use other roms, kernels or mods (and of course if a user wants to start a develop and has it's Prime locked, simply he can't).
I bought the tf201 a month ago because I didn't know anything about Bootloader, I thought that I could flash a kernel for OC or something similar. I try to unlock and I couldn't, and now I'm happy with it, because my tf201 died a week ago. When it returns from the RMA, I'll try to sell it. That's all, and this is the last ASUS tablet I'll buy.

Let me help you out a little, jordache. I'm quite happy with my Prime. I've not had problems with it. I have several Wireless APs at my home, so it's saturated with signal. As a result, I've not had problems with the wifi. I've chosen not to Root or Unlock my Prime, so I've not had the headaches there that others have had. As the features go (HDMI, Micro-SD, SD, USB, additional battery in keyboard dock), the Prime is top notch. I'd still take it over an iPad any day of the week.
Having said all of that, Asus's post-sale hardware support is terrible. So terrible that I probably won't buy another Asus product. I managed to lose a couple of rubber feet on the dock. When I inquired about getting some replacement feet, Asus wanted me to do an RMA on the dock. I'm not impressed.

Sure, they have every right to like bananas, but it isn't helpful, it's attention-seeking and is essentially pointless.
Go eat bananas if you like them. No one cares.

That is correct because my bluetooth sucks, my wireless sucks and should be much better than it is. No other issues besides that. I was just stating a fact that there is not much development for the tablet anymore. That's all I was saying, take it the way you wish but we are all allowed opinions here. thank you
The truth of the matter IMO is that people have come to expect too much. It's the "where's my update" syndrome where people want something new ever other week. Things evolve so fast that yes, a one year old device is practically ancient history. And Asus supported this device for much longer and through many more updates than most other manufacturers do. Take my Motorola Droid 3....please! Seriously my Droid 3 was abandoned by Motorola almost as soon as it was released. My original Droid Came with Android 2.0 then it got 2.1 and 2.2 from Motorola and then 2.3.7 via Cyanogen Mod 7.2 but once on 2.x, always on 2.x. On the other hand on the Prime we went from 3.x to 4.0 to 4.1 and will probably see 4.2 which is really not bad at all. It should also be capable of running future versions of custom ROMs....if the developers keep working on it. But really we have to expect that they will eventually move on too. But these days a year is almost an eternity for a mobile device.

The original post in this thread is the equivalent to someone standing up in the middle of a conference on economics and yelling "I LIKE BANANAS".
Sure, they have every right to like bananas, but it isn't helpful, it's attention-seeking and is essentially pointless.
Go eat bananas if you like them. No one cares.

Yes and another no brain response. I was just stating a fact.. don't like tough sh*t. I love my Prime, if I didn't I would have sold it long ago for something better. I was just stating that development has slowed down to a halt.. nothing to do with bananas !. Gezzzz

I don't see it so much as slowing down, more like we have got to the limits of what we can achieve with what we have.
When 4.2 arrives I'm sure you will see some more dev work going on and also there is cyanogenmod which updates nightly if you really want to update regularly.
There is only so much you can do based on the stock rom.

So lets get this straight, you "love" your Prime but you will not be buying another Asus product again. Can you please explain?
