So I asked for money as my Christmas present in hopes of purchasing the Prime. I have been searching YouTube, Google and this forum as well as a few others trying to gather intel. This is my first post but I have been scoping the threads out for weeks now.
I must say, a lot of wind has been let out of my sails. But honestly I am not surprised by the Wifi issues.
My hope was to snag a 32GB champagne (silver) and a transleeve. After reading all the issues on the first batch I have decided to wait until Bestbuy carries them in store. I have already ordered a clear dry-tech back and screen protector from skinomi.com and hopefully this will help the scratching caused by the transleeve but I am still not sure if I will purchase this sleeve.
I'm just curious how many out there are feeling the same as me? I expected issues with the first shipments so I am not giving up, but just disappointed to see the percentage of problems with other items such as screen pixel issues, colors, gps, etc.
I am very glad that some have invested in the technology early enough for individuals like me (and hopefully others) to hold tight, continue to research and review threads and then once purchased, feel very confident in the unit and accessories purchased. This web forum is very very helpful so thank you all for posting your comments, issues, etc.
Let's just hope Best buy gets the units in the next two weeks.
if you actually look at it there are likely alot of people who are not on xda who have the prime without issues and alot of people on xda with no issues the amount of people with issues is likely very small compared to everyone with a working one
My initial excitement has turned to more nervousness as i await shipment due to this forum. Any future product like this (phone or tablet) i will steer clear of the forums until i actually get the product. I am just glad i ordered through best buy so i can just return it to the store if there are problems. If that happens i will probably not get another one and just not buy a tablet at this point in time.
This is true, most people posting are having issues. I wouldn't do much posting if I had a working on hahaha.

I ordered mine from BB on the 23rd and after using it for a bit, I really like it. Mine had none of the issues that were reported so that's good. The only thing now is that there's a lot of lag, and probably because the 5th core is clocked pretty low but once we get some development going, the Prime's gonna be great.

I agree with the others. You've' done your research and you are prepared, but keep in mind you dont hear much from people without probems. For example, I have not even read the wifi threads because I don have a wifi problem.None-my wifi is perfectly fine. My gps is screwy but I just cant imagine a scenario whee Asus doesnt provide a solution for this.
I dont have a scratch on mine, as matter of fact there is not even a single finger print on mine. Ive left it in the plastic wrap/sleeve it came in until I find suitable case. But, its like a new car - its just matter of when, cuz it's bound to happen.
Try not to worry, you've done your homework, you know the product. Enjoy
I was a little worried like you, especially since I have myself convinced that I get a lot of lemon products.
I agree that there are likely far more satisfied Prime owners than the dissatisfied ones on xda.
I received mine today, and I must say, I am quite happy. Everything is fine. Screen's good, body is great, wifi's working fine, GPS locked on right away, and within 5 meters at that. Now, Honeycomb still has its hiccups, but that's another story, and it's not enough to bother me at the moment.
If you'll excuse me, I'm going back to my baby... =]
this is just like the news. they always reporting mostly bad stuff going on. hardly report good things. but we all know more good goes on in the world than bad stuff. its just the negative things that get the most attention. like others, I'm glad ididnt let the negative hype get to me or I would've never bought this tablet. I'm so glad I did. its the Best tablet yet.
I have a Prime with no issues. It's fast, intuitive, fun and I love it. It is my first tablet and first exposure to android, so I realize that I don't have anything to compare it to. I don't have the GPS or wifi issue, I have no light bleed, my browser is fluid and I have not run into any apps that are not compatable. It feels great in my hands - not slippery and my enclosure seems well sealed.
That said, I haven't wanted to get on here and rave about my good fortune when others are experiencing such disappointment. But I do want to make the point that when Asus gets the product right, it's a beautiful tablet that looks & feels amazing and works as designed. $500 is a difficult chunk to spend, even in good times; in my case, it was worth every penny. I wish that was so for everyone because truly, it is hard to enjoy something when you feel like the lucky exception.
I totally understand the hesitation and disappointment, but I just wanted to put it out there (for those still on the fence) that in some cases, (or I should say in MY case) it really is the tablet I was so wrapped up in anticipation of.
In hindsight, I was so petrified and worried that the tablet was going to be riddled with problems, that it has taken me a few days to really let go of the worry and allow myself to enjoy it.
mines perfect. woot!
I'm in the same boat as you, I saw this thing and was all "oh my, why hello there, dream tablet",
but as launch date for the Netherlands neared, the heaps upon heaps of complaints from the US started piling up.
Dodgy Wifi, dead GPS, flaky batterysensors, bleeding screens, vibrator motors coming loose,
all this really got my hairs up and now im on the verge of just giving up.
Ive already taken a bite from a big s*tsandwich a couple years ago by buying into one of the tablet predecessors, the UMPC,
and im afraid im going to be forking out my Christmas funds on a big ol' sour lemon.. again!
I dont want my first tablet to be a harrowing experience of failing hardware and non caring support.
Im a big fan of Asus and id blindly buy any motherboard from these fellas,
but this tablet and the nasty aura its starting to show...
meeeeh I dunno people.. what do we do now?
I would think waiting and buying it locally - where you can return it in a quick trip - might feel more like the ability to "undo" than buying it online.

Thanks for the comments! I am feeling more comfortable with my soon to be purchase. I might order the 32gb Champagne online from BB if it ever comes available, but I would prefer to get it from the store so I don't have to pay a restocking fee if exchanged.
Its more of the quick exchange without hassle I am looking for. If I have issues with it I would take it to BB and exchange it, but if I order it online and take it to the store which doesn't have any I am out of luck on getting an exchange.

Okay so I dont have it pre-ordered or anything basically waiting for Best Buy to get it back in stock.
Been seeing alot of the posts here, and was wondering if it is really worth the wait. It seems like alot of negatives are going on here concerning the prime and I wonder if it is really worth it or if I should look into a different tablet.
I mean is it as buggy and problematic as it seems ?

You'd best do a LOT of reading about this thing if you don't want your pocket picked.
in a nutshell, yes it's worth the wait, and no it's not as buggy as it seems to be on these forums. are there some manuf flaws from a rushed first production run? sure. do most other first generation/run devices have flaws like this? yes.
value is very subjective and it's going to depend on what you want from a tablet.
do you want cutting edge hardware that will be "king" for at least 4 months?
do you not care about proper gps functionality? (as in, are you going to use this as a standalone GPS device for navigating and while it's not connected to a wireless network)
do you want android?
do you want timely updates?
do you want something NOW?
if you answered yes to those questions, the prime is hands down the best tablet on the market.
personally, my prime works fine (aside from no gps lock, but A-GPS works perfectly fine for my usage), i have very little light bleed on the upper left, and will exchange that for another one once gamestop gets new stock in, but otherwise this thing is fast, solid, & gorgeous.
the kicker for the prime line in general tends to be the dock, i had one for the tf101 and i loved it, waiting for amazon to deliver my dock for the prime.

Bull****.
Everytime I turn round there's a new thread with someone having MAJOR problems. The tablet isn't worth it to someone who has ANY clue as to the value of money.

Before you call BS on somebody's, IMHO very well argumented, opinion, have you considered:
1) Most people happy with their prime don't post "I'm so happy with my prime", only people having problems post in the forum.
2) Have you considered the prime install base vs. the number of thread stating problems. I agree that the prime has major hw issues if the install base is like only 500 units and there are 50 threads with problems (10% with defective units). But if the install base is 5,000 or 50,000 then only 1 to 0,1 % observes problems and almost 99% do not..
3) How many of the problems observed are in regards to human error or lack of knowledge? I've seen threads where people complain that the unit won't turn on because they haven't charged it or for what ever reason have gotten the unit into boot mode.
4)Some problems are attributed to ICS in general and not the prime.
I agree that the prime launch has been sub optimal and the first batch of primes has definitely generated a lot of static about hardware problems. I got mine exchanged for a new unit, and have not seen any of the problems mentioned on the forums.
OP: See adiliyo's post, I definitely agree on his views. I enjoy my Prime very much and with the keyboard, I rarely have a reason to boot my macbook. The UI is very smooth, it is absolutely a beast in regards to video playback, and the build quality is very good. With ICS the browser performance is very good and almost as fast as a desktop browser.
If you want to be sure to buy a tablet with no problems at all, then wait a few months after launch before you buy. Being first mover presents both unique problems but also unique rewards - like me having the prime in Denmark 5 weeks before hitting retail here.
It depends, the prime in itself is beautiful but there is no denying that it has some serious issues, namely GPS and WIFI.
GPS is irrelevant for me (even though it simply should work of course) but WIFI IS a serious issue. When close to the router and with no obstacles all is fine but performance degrades quickly once you move away from the router.
Check this video for a comparison:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nzCZc3pjtrA
And I can confirm these results with my prime (also owning the original transformer TF101).
Apart from WIFI, it truely is beautiful and worth the wait but if you plan to use wifi across the house, or in some other spots with lesser access, for streaming video, etc please think twice (or thrice) before geting it.
Worth to me. I did a little homework before I decided to buy a Prime. I knew the GPS would be a problem, but I didn't really need a 10" GPS anyway. So I went for it.
The wifi function is okay, no big issue. everything is good. Quite satisfied now.
I believe it is worth the wait. I read constantly while waiting for best buy to have them in stock online. I took into consideration the various problems individuals were having and when one became available, I purchased it. I have had it all but a week now and have seen zero issues in regards to wi-fi (signal strength matches my Atrix's whereever I am) and GPS works well enough that it locates my location close-enough. As another poster said, only those people who have seen issues have posted about them. I have zero complaints with mine, especially with the ICS update yesterday, and would recommend this unit to anyone seeking a great tablet.
I'd say it's worth it. I know looking on the forums might make some people a little nervous about shelling out $500 for the current Prime. But you need to keep in mind that forums are where people go WHEN they have problems. Obviously, people with issues are over-represented here.
That said, I would not say the TF201 is perfect. GPS seems clearly defective. No excuses on this one. If you need GPS, look elsewhere.
Aside from that, I don't see anything else that can be considered a major flaw. Some people have issues with Wifi, most do not (myself included, I get the same internet speed on my TF201 as I do on my gigabit wired desktop). As far as the other stuff (light bleed, dead pixels), it's not really out of the ordinary for LCD screens for a minority to have issues...read newegg reviews for practically any popular monitor and you'll see it, likewise over at apple (or other device) forums. People who are expecting LCD screen production to be perfect or for manufacturers to go over every pixel on every device are kidding themselves.
Thank you for some of the replys.
This is my thing, I know generally the fourms are where people are going to be crying about there devices.
Now I work in a tech support type job, so I know an opinion of something can be skewed when all you see is bad about stuff. now the other thing though is this. I see people posting issues about how doing regular firmware updates are causing serious issues with their Prime's.
I know its hands down on papaer the best tablet, but even with one of my friends who has one, first time he opened it out of box he did a fireware update and nearly bricked and then had to do the battery drain to fix the problem.
So I am alittle hesitant on the whole prime still. Which is why I am here on the fourms asking, basicly seeing, those who are "happy" who haven't had the problems, who don't seem to be those who are whining and crying and complaing about how Asus "stole my money", come forth and say something.
Oh and thanks adiliyo, your post seemed to at least be unbias, so thanks, also I too dont give a rats about the GPS, its a tablet, sure its nice to work, but not a big deal for me. Also ph0ton you as well thanks for the opinion.
Hopefully there will still be more replys still, cause I am still sadly on the fence about his.
I recieved one from the 1st batch (arrived on 23rd) and the only issue I have is weaker GPS than my XOOM, but I have never used the GPS on either. My Wifi is fine, and I absolutely love the tablet overall. I would buy it again in a second.
Here's a "useless" post from me: I regrettably returned my Prime today to OD. I was having questionable wifi performance on my Prime. I'm a PC/Network tech that has everything I own tweaked to perfection, including my router. It's the RT-N16 (Asus). 7' away, signal dropped from 20Mbps down to 11Mbps. With Bluetooth on, it dropped to 325Kbps. The serial # started with B___ (I think BCKOS?) I don't have it in front of me, but it's the older hardware version. Anyway, so I had it boxed up two days ago, but unboxed it last night, as I really didn't want to return it. I figured since I had done a hard reset, that MAYBE it would magically fix itself. However, I spent a few hours browsing XDA, and testing the prime as much as I could and still ended up boxing it back up and shipping it out today. Looking around at other options, as I need something for work, I honestly don't want anything else. I want my Prime back... Just... Working.
My buddy is also looking for a tablet, and before I decided to return mine, he was about to purchase one. I called him yesterday and just told him to hold off.. It IS the best tablet out there, but the few quirks just need fixed before it's something I can recommend.
Issues I had with mine:
1. GPS was horrible (never flexed tablet to see if it'd fix it)
2. Wifi at close range worked good, anything more than 5' dropped considerably
3. With Bluetooth on & connected to headset would bring Wifi speeds to a crawl
4. Browser would hang on loading pages, and wouldn't allow scrolling, often times would state that "browser is unresponsive" and ask if i wanted to wait or close
5. Background formatting was a hassle. Nothing ever fit right (unless i followed some 3rd party tweaks)
6. Updates for Camera/GPS never did anything or improved anything.
7. Tegra 3 Optimized games would hang. Often times screen would go haywire or would open & close instantly without loading the game.
Ultimately, it came down to this: I honestly think that the OP was correct that the pins are the main culprit. I don't think it's something that can be fixed via a software update. Also, I am pretty upset that Asus is making the customer pay for shipping. It is their fault these tablets are having these problems, not the customer. I have always been a fan of Asus, and I'm not going to say that the problems with this tablet are going to make me never purchase another Asus product again.. I mean, look at their history with mainboards & video cards.. Some have issues, but you all know that if you were going to put your trust into either of those products, Asus would be something you would feel comfortable recommending.
I don't feel that we should say "poor Asus" and stroke their ego. I think us, as consumers should stand our ground and demand free shipping to the repair facility for a mistake they made. Just as they'd expect you to pay if you broke it and needed it fixed. They broke it, they fix it. Pretty plain and simple. Anyway, good luck to everyone here. I will be closely monitoring this forum, as I really want the issues resolved quickly.. I can't wait to have that beast in my arms again.
Unfortunately I'm in the same boat. Mine is going back this weekend. I gave it two weeks, but random browser freezes, minor light bleed, game crashes, gps, low wifi power, and all the rest add up to a poor user experience. Make your opinion known with your wallet.

If the pogo pins turn out to be the reason for different wireless performance between Prime's, Asus is going to have to come clean like they did with GPS. They can either do it actively (mea culpa) or passively (change the design on future units). If they take the latter path someone here on XDA will figure it out. Regardless, this seems potentially too big to ignore so hopefully there will be some sort of communication and/or design change. Once either occurs people can buy/re-buy with confidence. An uglier route would be for Asus to continue to produce low volumes of Prime's as-is to save face until the TF700's are available. It's obviously not a customer-centric approach but recoups their investment in the Prime and maintains a revenue stream in the short-term. Although the returns have to be killing them from a profitability perspective.
I've been accused of being a conspiracy theorist so I never mentioned this before. But if you watch this official Asus video from CES, their rep makes a big deal at the beginning about the Prime being sold alongside the TF700. Later in the video when talking about the TF700's back cover design he twice mentions the Prime in the past tense saying "had" and "did have." Don't shoot the messenger.

You guys that are taking such a "the Prime's great" stance might want to be a little less confident in your positions. There are issues large and small that affect more than just a handful of devices. Some of the people that have provided commentary on the more serious wireless issues have been h/w engineers and what’s been discussed can’t be fixed with a Band Aid. This isn't just a case of "fanboys" vs. "haters" like you typically see in most forums.
With today's discussion on the pogo pin choice for connecting the Wi-Fi chip to its antennas, there's some serious questions that need to be answered. As all these issues keep accumulating, keep in the back of your mind Asus announced a new device with identical features to the Prime less than three weeks after it was released. They may co-exist peacefully for a long time or Asus could pull the Prime (or put a non-HD display on the TF700 and call it the TF600) soon after it's released as a way of addressing the Prime's shortcomings. With the amount of returns, RMA’s for repair, and scarcity which points to manufacturing issues, what profit their making is quickly evaporating. And no company continues to produce a product they don't make money on. If they do pull or replace the Prime, many will remember those that staunchly supported the Prime when logic dictates there's something very troubling about how it’s come to market.

There you go, putting Asus on the spot again. There is NO WAY they released this tablet without knowing about the GPS, WiFi, WiFi+BT issues. They knew about all of it, but their analysts computed that selling it "as is" would be more profitable than recalling it and fixing it.
For 99% of us, we are happy with screen bleed, bad WiFi range, no GPS, screen colors bad, chargers that fall apart, no BT with Wifi, dead pixels and random reboots. Those issues are non-issues, we love our Primes unconditionally.
Go troll someplace else.

Not a difficult strategy to accumulate "thanks." Demandarin's gotten hundreds that way in a few weeks. Simply jump in to any thread that has an even slightly negative slant and unleash a torrent of positive adjectives. That way, those that are blinded by love for their Prime's will in unison give you tons of thanks for contributing nothing of substance to the discussion. Keep up the good work. You should be at a 100 thanks in no time if that's what you're aiming for.

Meaning: I loved my Prime.. No question, hands down it was awesome. Unfortunately for me, using this for business (as I also stated in OP) wasn't an option. And, again, as I stated above, I will be repurchasing it. Just, after the issues that I have with it are fixed. I didn't complain and ask for opinions either.. I formulated my own and acted on my opinion well before posting this.
What's the point of a forum, if you can only post good things about a product? I don't have to agree with your statements, nor do you have to agree with mine.. Both are acceptable! I say, by all means man, if it works for you, keep it! I would too if I didn't have to rely on adequate wifi, or the occasional GPS lock. I was fine with the games crashing.. I didn't want it for games. But all the problems added up to something I feel would ultimately be useless for me to utilize.
If you weren't talking to me, disregard all the above
I get 10 meg down approx 30-35 feet away through 4 walls. The same or better tests than I get with my other devices.
I used to be able to lock GPS still, but not moving, after a pinch near the GPS connector I can lock fine while going 70mph.
No crashes.
No screen bleed.
No color issues or bright spots.
No force closing apps so far.
Dock connects solidly and works great.
Sucks to be y`all.
Yeah, my screen was perfect.. The light bleed was next to zero.. Nothing more than any other devices I own. I also had no dead pixels. Upon upgrading to ICS (did it within the first 5 hours owning it) I had I think 2 random reboots, that was the first day I owned it. Didn't have any after that. I didn't want to pinch the screen, because I was scared of denting it or breaking it, and knowing my luck, it would have happened moments before returning it . I contemplated picking up a newer serial # one, but while in OD, they didn't have any in stock.. I was hoping maybe they had one on display that I could have checked to see if performance was better (browser/wifi) and then just grab another. I posted my serial # above to also let people know, that I was evidently in the group with "older hardware". So, my experiences may have been a bit limited.. I feel naked without mine now
Edit: Kids also keep asking me to get it back because I purchased a few of the Bearenstain Bears books, as well as some free books for kids on the kindle marketplace.. Probably the one thing I miss most. Ha.
Not that it matter or you care, but I have the BC serial that is "older hardware."
Gary posted a possible fix of manually reverting back to HC, changing some setting to what appears to be "normal" and then re-updating to ICS. I didn't touch a thing before upgrading to ICS, but I know some of you got yours before ICS was out.

Trust me, this won't last. You'll notice some form or fashion of screen defects in a couple of weeks, just in time for your policy to have expired for a return/exchange... in which case you will be forced to ship it off to ASUS.
That will be the cost of your smug sense of self-worth.
I don't believe in a "perfect" TFP, because that would be less likely than seeing a Double-Rainbow, all the way.

It's always the same as the main rainbow, just dimmer and the colors are flipped. I have seen plenty, along with a triple rainbow across the whole sky outside of redrocks in I believe 2008.
I ordered my TF201 32GB from Office Depot and received it in early January. Unboxed it, turned it on, installed some apps etc. then left charging overnight. Next morning noticed unit was not charged and down to 25% or so. Used another outlet but no improvement. Then froze the power unit as suggested in the forum. Called Asus Technical Support and troubleshooted the unit. CSR convinced it was the unit itself; asked me to ship unit to Texas facility (at my dime of course). 2 weeks later unit was shipped back (took 9 days since it was Fedex Ground from CA to NY!).
Unboxed unit and noticed that battery at 5%! Plugged in and... Nothing. Not charging!! Called ASUS - probably same idiot with whom I spoke the first time. Asked me to ship it back (on my dime) again to Texas but different RMA! Had no explanation as to why the RMA number should be different but I guess whoever they outsourced repairs to does not want to report to ASUS that they did not fix an issue the first time..CSR told me to only ship unit AGAIN. I challenged him that it may makse sense because, god forbid, it may be charger at fault! He said "ok" ship it back too.. thank you very kind of you to keep an open mind MR. ASUS CSR... I also mentioned that it seems unfair I pay for shipping again... so he sent me a Fedex label.. ground of course so 3-4 days to Texas (no ground pick up on weekends) and then another few days for the geniuses at whoever does the repair to figure it out and another 5-6 days to ship back.. so all in all 6 weeks since purchase and I have not used my Prime.. I had bought my wife an ASUS UX21 since she travels a lot for work but I returned it to Amazon for a refund within the 30 day window.. had to pay a fee to return but hey probably saved her (and me) a lot of aggravation.. her Toshiba ultrabook is working just fine thank you very much. Totally frustrated by idiots at ASUS. I cancelled the dock purchase at Office Depot too. As much as I do not like Apple products at least you can find an Apple Store everywhere and get a replacement and/or a technician to take a look and troubleshoot.. and iPads cost the same as a PRIME.. I am done with Asus.. once this is fixed it goes on Craigslist or eBay. Not sure what else I'll get.. anyone want to order my ASUS? It will be cheap.. once I get it back.
This reminds me of an experience we had with an Asus RMA, it was one of their eeePC models (back when they were the hot thing to get). We had to send the device back a total of three or four times before the issue was finally properly repaired. Asus can be kinda poor when it comes to some more obscure RMA situations, I totally understand your frustration.

Sounds completely understandable on your stance. Unacceptable customer service. Damn Asus, is the RMA place really that bad. Not all are bad experiences but there's been too many bad stories popping up lately. Good luck on choosing new device. As much as i like my Prime, if I had to go through what some people have, I'd give up on them also.
@OP
Why didn't you take it back to Office Depot in the first place? That's why retailers exist, to deal with the customer.
My 14-day return window is up today. I'm bringing back the TFP.
Even though I've had no problems with mine, I've heard too many stories like this. Too much negativity surrounding this device to allow me to enjoy it. I will downgrade my specs requirement and will go with the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Have I read this right? You have a perfectly fine functioning tfp, but are returning it because others have had bad experiences, and you have heard too many stories!
This sounds like you give more credence to other peeps woes rather than go by your own
Experiences. I had better not mention all the negative stories I have heard about the galaxy tab as I would hate to ruin your enjoyment of that tablet!!!
What
Is wrong with enjoying the ..perfect tfp that you have? Remember that peeps are far more likely to moan than praise, for every negative issue on this board there are many many more happy punters who have not posted anything anywhere

Yes...you heard it right. I previously had the Galaxy Tab and was fairly happy with it's performance (sans ICS). Really wanted to try the TFP...so I returned the GT and got one to try myself even with all of the negativity expressed here. While I encountered no real issues myself...I couldn't help think about whether or not the TFP would become but a blip on the radar for ASUS support and dev efforts. Sure, the TFP is newer technology than the GT....perhaps I'm just not willing to be one of their beta testers. The GT has been out long enough now to iron out a lot of the wrinkles...plus, ICS is still to come which will almost certainly improve performance.
I'm not slamming the TFP...just wasn't impressed enough with it over the GT to risk being subjected to Asus' tech support should that have been required.

Really,
Yours works but you're going to return it because other people have had issues?
Well.. I love my current Prime and I'm waiting on my second to get here next week along with my dock!
Newegg won't even accept my return because the serial number sticker next to the charging port is gone....
They don't care to turn it on and check the serial in settings to match it with the box and warranty papers.
Looks like a lot of us have had bad experiences because of this tablet. I'm waiting for the TF700T but I might be going with another company.

THIS^^^is a follower. Worried too much about what others are thinkn instead of making decisions based on hour own thinking. PLUS the comment about not sure about further Asus support or developement is ignorant at the least. ASUS has been constantly pumping out updates. Name one other company who released as many OTA updates as the Prime received. WE had ICS. We had root already out the box basically. We Had overclock in less than a month. We had Ubuntu n Linux n other flavors lf it already n less than a month. We already have extra drivers n such being added by dev. In less than a month. We already have root for ICS. We already have some minor theming going on. All this without even having bootunlocker tool yet. For you to make such a statement is kinda disrespect to hard work developers have been doing already here. Name another tablet as new as this one thst had so many things developement wise in its first month of existence. You forgetting its still barely over a month since people first started receiving their primes.
I COULD CARE less you returned it, that's your right to. But your reasoning is plain silly. You said although my prime runs perfect, I got frustrated at seeing all the negative stuff surrounding it. DO you know how many of us had our devices way before you n been dealing with all negative stuff? My prime works great also but not gonna return just because someone else dislikes theirs. Sounds like someone needs their hand held when choosing tablet or making any major decisions. GOOD THING THE other poster didn't mention horror stories he heard about the Galaxy tab or you might just throw a hissy fit.
DONT mean to sound harsh but JUST saying....it would be different if you were like OK I'm returning it because it performed poorly for me. Or I had a personal bad experience with Asus support. Not, well ima return it because Tom,****,n Jane dont like theirs...lmfao
Well good luck with new device anyways.
I had a wonderful experience with them. with a new working Prime delivered before I sent mine back.
But then again, I didnt demand a fix or talk like a privileged anus.

Thanks...a follower? At least you didn't call me a fanboy. ;-)
I care about my investment and how I feel about it. It's all speculation right now as to how much develpment will occur for the tfp at this point...guess I'm just bowing out as I don't wish to be part of the guessing. I do know the Galaxy Tab has been rewarded.
As far as me not experiencing any earth-crushing issues, I'd say that's true. However, I'm sitting here inside my home typing away on my GalaxyTab with a lock on 8 satellites. And wifi range is excellent EVERYWHERE in my home (and I am talking about a significant difference)...I now get my expected 22-24Mbps down from anywhere in my house whereas before would only achieve these speeds right beside my router and would get 4-6Mbps down further away. Still useable...but pale in comparison to the speeds I get with the GT.
I tested both the TFP and the GT within a month period....I feel better with the sammy and went back to it. How is that being a follower? I tried both extensibly for myself to arrive at a decision I felt comfortable with. As far as the negativity being a factor in my decision...hell yeah. Why shouldn't it be? Had I not been offered the chance to return the TFP easily, I never would have bought it based on what I've read here...some would say that's part of the research done when considering a purchase. After testing it out, I wasn't blown away...for my needs, there was nothing that the GT couldn't do just as well plus with gps and wifi working much better. For sure, it only has 2 cores...maybe I'm good with that.
I do hope everyone feels good about their purchase. I didn't and did the logical thing.

Easy as you are right. That is what i said n still feel the same. I ran by serial number by Gary n he told me it was from an early batch n someone would call me. Ill easily take the new hardware revision over older one. Especially if it might mean might GPS might finally work. I never said "I want them to repair mines". Plus although no dropped signals or anything, wifi signal still fluctuates alot. SO if older hardware was never really meant to be shipped out then people on older batch entitled to the upgrade, or sorts. I did pay for this device, Cash, and I do have a warranty. I never had an issue like others been posting. SO ILL TAKE THE MINI UPGRADE IF OFFERED. That's all. Plus from hearing the horror stories from returns like guy with device smashed, I'm not sure if I would even send mines in yet. Especially since overall having no problems. GPS aside. Remember, they are people out there that have GPS working to some extent one way or another. I having seen a lock yet, although I never tried for more than 5 mins n was indoors everytime. I haven't taken my prime outdoors yet. Plus based on my date of final purchase 12/22 I'd be entitled to any possible hardware fixes for GPS since mine is clearly shown to be purchased before they took GPS spec down.

received it in early January. so all in all 6 weeks since purchase and I have not used my Prime..
My question is how you figure 6 weeks? How many weeks are there in January if today is the 28th?
On a serious note, why not try to find a charger from Frys or OD or Staples. The ones for the OG TF 101 work and determine if the problem is the charger or not?

OK, completely understandable then. I see where you really coming from from this post.
As far as your second quote,I'm not really waiting for anything. I was just told my device is one of early one built. Device still works great but if I'm offered an opportunity to upgrade it to newer parts, then why wouldn't I. Lol. It'll make it even better, I would hope. I still love this device and has done everything I've asked of it n more. Only complaint I would have is GPS. I know that's very important to some people and deciding factor whether to keep it or not. For me, its no big deal. Everything is great aside from GPS. Just thankful I don't have issues some others been describing. Kinda makes it hard to believe when your device working so well. But its a given.
One thing though, Asus better step their game up with the quickness. I have a feeling if they don't address the possible issues on prime, their new upgrade model will be a fail LR do worse. As Prime n t-700 basically share all the same internal components. It'll be in Asus best interest to attack these issues head on. ASUS Losing people everyday. They gaining also but still. People with issues want to keep device but won't since some are riddled with issues. Can't be mad for someone wanting to return a device that's not working properly for them.
Don't shoot messenger on this one. people believe that the Prime is being discontinued already. This is the Q&A Forum I'm newbie, so I asked here. Figured it was the correct area. Just read this thread and I don't know what to believe. All I know is Asucks wont fix our proven defected primes that we have right now.
http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/transformer-prime-general-discussions/13235-should-i-keep.html#post133813
People are talking about getting their refund while they can. I'm in the same situation but I got until the 22nd. I got the Champagne model with the dock. These docks are suppose to work with the new TF700 with the strip of plastic on the back, So if there isn't a design fault why not make the back of the new tablet the same as the Prime, Its already in production and would be easy for them to keep up production, everyone knows it’s the back causing these issues. on the new one they are fixing it like they should fix ours.
I would even pay shipping they should do this for everyone who spent their hard earned money and waited months after they paid to get this product only to be disappointed in certain things with it everyone who bought a prime should get the back replaced bottom line!!! It should pick up signals just like my galaxy 10.1 or my phone, it’s only fair. I would like to know if the GPS issue where they took that off the spec sheet is what they call in the legal world as "bait and switch" (LAWSUIT?).
Mine isn't too bad other than the Wi-Fi I get signal drops about every 20 seconds and a little light bleed on right side of screen its really minor in 3 small spots all on the right side of the screen the light bleed comes out about the size of a pencil if you laid it right beside the black in those spots actually one spot is about an inch up the other are about a half inch up the screen. That really don't bother me not noticeable unless on completely black screen and the light is turned up real high.
The guys on the forums have taken the back off and everything. It is a very good read but it proves its a default with Asus but they fixed their Primes themselves its a long thread but worth the read. I think this is going to turn into a modding tablet. At least I hope so, maybe I would keep it or buy another one later. The ones that took them apart got rid of the light-bleed by loosening the screws and playing around to just the right amount of pressure. But with the mods they have done with wires hooked up to the WLAN and GPS connections they got a strong signal and pick up satellites so it is an Asus default, they can’t deny it anymore, So hopefully they make a move at Asucks and fast before I have to send mine back for refund once again. I just wish they would own up and fix the Prime; it would save their reputation and make it a really good tablet that functions as it is suppose to.
Another issue is they probably have so many returns I think people that don't know might be getting screwed over because to be honest, actually I think I got a return sold to me as a brand new Tablet from a reputable source Newegg, I know Newegg would not re-box these so it would have to be Asucks and I think this might be Illegal not Newegg but Asus Selling used items as brand new. I think they may be getting returns that look brand new and boxing them up as new, when they were actually used. As far as mine goes it’s not like it came out of the box where you could tell for sure that it was used but it just didn't look in perfect condition like my other tablets I've opened and it’s been many at least over 10, but it’s very nice to be truthful and I couldn't prove if it was used for sure because it looks new, but I just have a feeling they are taking these returns that people are sending back that are opened already, and used maybe a couple times and selling them again as brand new that's just my opinion.
They have to have a giant pile of used Primes somewhere. Maybe down the line we will see refurbished ones but I haven't saw any yet and I know at least 6 people myself that took back open Primes. With slight use that still looked brand new when they were put back in the box. Sorry for such a long post I just wanted to share my experience and I'm going through the same thing. I don't know whether to ship back because I really do like it. Or If I should just wait it out for Acer or Lenovo to release their Tegra 3s, which is also suppose to have 2GB of ram, that's a huge difference in ram, or just keep what I have and hope Asus will make it right with us.
Waiting for the others Acer and Lenovo seems like it will be forever from what I've read they will release in the second quarter. I think I read somewhere that it is also going to be toward the end of the second quarter. I just can’t see myself holding onto this if it is going to be discontinued and if it will never get it fixed. Someone should start modding them the right person with the right skills. Where they will look nice and clean when finished with the mod. They would make a killing if they could get the Wi-Fi and GPS issue fixed with some sort of plexi or acrylic glass smoothed out on the back like the new one or the IPAD.
First: there is enter button on every keyboard. Use it from time to time.
Second: chaging the back to a plastic one isn't easy because it would require changing a lot of the internal construction (which uses the metal back) - at least from what I read.
I know there is an enter button man, see,
I was just in a hurry I had some schoolwork that needed finished. Deadlines.
Anyways I'm not talking replacing the entire back, just a strip on the back plate. You see what I'm trying to explain. Maybe a half to full inch strip across the back with either - epoxy or glued to the metal plating that's already there.
Maybe even get into design cuts, dragons, tribal, your name, whatever you liked cut out of the back plating. using a dremel or something similar, I don't know what you would cut that back plate with but I assume a dremel would work. then have a thin enough sheet of plexi glass or acrylic, then maybe some LED's, to light it up. I don't know if that would mess with the screen viewing though, just a thought that came as I was looking around my room.
Its just an idea I thought of when I looked over at my Modded Xbox to start modding similar to Xbox mods. Like on mine I have designs cut out and LED's, I have a design cut out of the top on the shell of my JTaged XBOX along with extra fans to keep it cool. It just adds another dimension to our possibilities.
I don't think Asucks is going to fix our primes. I bet they got a junkyard full of primes my third one is going back in a couple days. Light bleed, Bad reception from WiFi. If I go to the farthest place in my house, which is upstairs and back through a hallway and into the farthest bedroom, with all my tablets the prime is 30db less reception than the others?
By the way I wasn't trying to be an ass I was just in a hurry, and trying to get everything wrote down before my test. I had an online test that I had to login to. Sorry for the eyestrain!
my dilemma
so i just got my prime in the mail and have the keyboard for it...
and after reading many of these posts and threads i'm left wondering if i should just return it before i even open the fargin box. i'm actually contemplating opening a thread to get a poll going and see the common idea
I understand where your coming from. Its a crazy situation man. I would at least open it and see how it performs you might have one of the "good ones"? I know mine isn't all that good at least my GPS and WiFi, they suck. I can be in the same room walk 10 feet away and it loses a bar and drops a good amount in WiFi analyzer. That's just crazy. I'm pretty sure mine is going back I like it a lot too. Just if it didn't have those issues.
Does ANYONE know the release date for the Acer or the Lenovo. I'm more interested in the Lenovo. Asus needs some competition, like right now or soon, so that they get the point when people stop buying this Prime until its fixed. They don't care because people are still buying them.

i couldn't get the hyperlink to work properly on this tab but i'm sure i'll get it going in the future.
i'm liking it, in summary to the thread i just tried to link to is about how this one is working.
aside from the gps not getting a signal during a day and night of terrible weather, everything else seems to be going good and i can happily say that i think i got a good one... or rather one that works as it is supposed to.
i doubt i'll ever really need the gps functionality as the wifi can give me bing maps or googe maps or mapquest which can work with a little logical deduction, i'm thinking that even if that just doesn't work, i'm really not going to be swayed away from keeping this thing.
so far... me likey
Yeah I really don't want to let mine go either. I was just wondering does light bleed get worse? I can deal with the WiFi because it is acceptable. GPS don't matter to me. I got a cell for that.
The cell letting me connect to my Prime away from home, that is what is one of the things that is leaning me more toward keeping this tablet. I love that patch, I forget the guys name that got it figured out but, thanks again man. If I keep my cell right beside me the Prime stays on 4 bars but sometimes it drops to 3 bars. I'm on 3G but it seems to work decent. I'm thinking of trying a lighter browser for when I do tether.
Did you have a question hiding in that wall of text?
Light bleed should NOT get worse over time.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using xda premium
Well... don't sweat it! I've got my Prime a few weeks ago and love it deeply. I come from the 'original' TF101 and I have (had) both with the keyboard dock. Light bleed is the same as with the previous model (little better). GPS, nah who uses THAT on their tablets anyway? As for WiFi, just works great and in comparison, just google for ipad wifi issues. My girlfriend has an ipad2 and it too has wifi issues (and not my prime or laptops). Keep it, use it, love it, that's my advise.
Did you have a question hiding in that wall of text?
Thanks for the replies on the questions that I did have. Yeah maybe I should have put this in general section, but the main question why I started this thread was to ask about the Prime being discontinued. Or if this was just a rumor.
I got a few days left to decide if I want to keep mine and if they discontinue it, I'm not going to keep it, its going back. Then I went off on how Asus aint doing SH*T for us, your right about the lack of many questions, but yeah there are some questions in there, along with my rambling about Asus, I'm just pretty pissed off about this man. Anyways if my OP offended you in any way, my bad man.

Completely dumb thread based on false info and specualtion. Prime is not being discontinued. New TF-300 is not a replacement for the prime. Its actually a lower specs n lower price device aimed St different market. Its more like an OG transformer 1.5. New tf-700 is not a rreplacement for prime either. Aimed at a higher end market with its HD display. Not worth the extra$100 IMO. When there hasn't been any official tests or stats shown that plastic strip on back of its metal backcover actually improves wireless reception.
So believe into the senseless rumors if you want. Some people are so gullible..lmfao we already have tons of dev. Support n this ship will keep ln moving. Stop believing every single dang thing you hear on the internet..lmao. no proof at all to suggest Prime being discontinued. If anything. Production on it has been amped up.

Don't. As its pointless and will get shut down. Good working primes clearly outnumber faulty ones. Poll will immediately show to keep it. All other polls have same result. Majority satisfied with their prime and keeping it.

No new competitive tablets you mentioned will be out anytime soon. June the earliest. Too long of a wait IMO. By then Nvidia already will be ready to announce n roll out tegra4 devices. We one step ahead of the game..lol
Prime really aint as bad as I originally thought.

I didn't say that I believed anything that's why I asked here in the Q&A forum, I assume the forum is for questions. To be honest, now that I've used my Prime for a few days I'm liking it the more I use it, and just to clear up another issue I read in another thread not all primes are affected by the new update. I got the latest update with no battery drain or SOD issues, I don't think I'm going to send it back anymore, I've grown to like this bad boy.
Its not really as bad compared to what I've read hear about some others. They have major Issues. I just don't want something to happen down the road that gives me all the lockups and random reboots that some others are having.
So you got a laugh on me, glad that I could make you smile man. You didn't spill your coffee or anything did you? j/k man, I come in peace for real. I'm just new to this tablet and all I seem to hear is bad news.
The only thing wrong with mine is problems I have I stated, not a very good reception and slight light bleed, but its not to bad at least the light bleed, you don't even notice it unless the tablet is all the way black and light is up above 60-70%. I guess I can deal with the reception. I still get 2 bars but I forget what I get upstairs on WiFi Analyzer, I know its like 20-25 less db than my phone, the Prime will drop down 20-25 db and come back up every couple minutes. Don't know why the Prime does this. I will have to search the forums about that.
I don't believe everything I read I guess I should have made my post more clear. I was just asking a question in a Question thread, isn't that what the this forum is for?
But peace, man for real though the questions I asked about was because I had no Idea and it seemed like I was going to have all these issues that others were reporting because of my weak WiFi and no GPS. I thought that was a sign of a bad Prime. I don't even really see me using the GPS anyways and if I did I could just tether my phone or use my phone, It has a big enough screen at 4.5". I just got this thing and I"m used to a strong connection from all my devices - Galaxy Tab, Touchpad, Viewsonic GTablet, 2 Nooks, and phone.
Just return it.

Fair enough. You explained your situation well. If you think you may have a wifi range issue confirm it with wifi analyzer. Don't go by bars on prime wifi, not a good indicator. There are plenty out there that get strong connections. If you think its not working right, just exchange it. Or you could try forgetting your network, then rebooting and see if that fixes it. All wifi devices will vary but the prime should be on par with your other devices. Mines is on par with my Ipad and Atrix 4g.
What firmware are you on? If not on the latest update, get on it. Plus we have another update coming early next week.
Also if it has bad light bleed, in your opinion, then just exchange it also. Don't settle for it. You can just exchange it and get a fully capable device.
I won't lie... I was eager upon opening this thread, only to be greeted by this disappointing amount of ranting found within.
I considered sifting for questions... but then decided to make a sandwich instead.

I will agree that the prime isn't "dead", but I will say ASUCKS has screwed this one so bad that there is no way production will continue as long as it was intended. I highly doubt that save a major MAJOR redesign of the tab, we will be seeing stock coming in for more than a ~2 mths past the TF700 series, despite what ASUCKS claims. If, and thats a big IF, the new TF700 or 300 for that matter has rectified our wifi/bluetooth/GPS problems, then production on the 201s will halt. Right now, as we speak, ASUCKS is trying to figure out how the hell they are going to weather the storm that is the blowup of the prime in their face. There's not a single techy I know that isn't aware of these issues, and most average consumers get their recommendations from us.
I would also venture to say that production has dropped, not to be argumentative demandarin, but the fact that stores can't get stock and RMAs are taking forever isn't because people are buying the hell out of these things, but because of the incredibly high return rate. Its because they know they have a serious design flaw that really can't be fixed baring admitting they originally lied when they said "we don't have any issues, we don't know what you all are talking about". And they certainly cannot admit that now with the pending lawsuit. This has been proven by huge retailers like Clove, Staples, and even AMAZON refusing to sell the damn thing due to high return rates. Honestly, when was the last time a retailer refused to sell a product before the manufacturer recalled it? So they have to weather the storm and hope that enough face can be saved and the TF 700/300 doesn't flop. They definitely lost alot of customers though, ALOT of people aren't happy, including my 2 classmates who got BC serials from bestbuy. On a side note, Staples has taken an official stance it seems to stop selling again despite the C1 reiteration they "promised" me would fix all my problems. Guess I have to return it for cash/giftcard this time around.
I've been an early adopter all my life. I am that asshole who waits in line at best buy to get the XBOX on opening night, and picked up the SGN on launch day. I used to have great faith in asus, loved them and their products, this was a naaaaasty flop. I'll be holding out until we get our new MWC announcements and see what kind of functionality the other manufacturers can bring. It's going to be really hard for me to be an early adopter of ASUcks again though.
Also I get the whole T700 premium tablet arguement, I dont want the high res display either, those pixels dont matter on a 10" screen and it'll do nothing but eat my battery/performance for $100, but imo working wifi at the hospital, which is mainly where I'll use it, is more important to me, and well worth $100 for a solid build that acer is likely to lack and working wifi/geolocation/bluetooth.
Honestly though if you can get a working prime that satisfies your needs, I'll be the first to say keep it. The device is unparalleled when working properly. Unfortunately I cannot justify paying ~500 for a tablet that won't give me continuous wifi in my hospital setting where walls are abundant, and I cant bluetooth my Breaking Bad audio to ignore vampire gayness. *high five demandarin*
sry, that was long, back to psych final studyin =\
I've waited, toyed with the idea, tried to sell it to myself and am now, I think almost ready to take the plunge.
Here is my worry after spending an hour in these forums.
Would I be buying a dud? Is the prime that bad hardware wise and littered with problems that I'd be wasting my money.
Do you think / know if the GPS Wifi and BT issues are likely to get fixed or have they improved.
I'd really really appreciate any advice people can give me, stock is limited in the uk and add to that the horror stories of rma's etc I want to make sure im making the right decision.
Thank you so much
Chris
The percentage chance that you have a crippling issue is slim. It's more likely that you get a device and love it. The simple thing here is make sure you can return the device if you don't like it or have issues. Don't buy it from a place that won't take it back once you've opened it.
As far as GPS, that likely won't have a permanent fix from the software side.
Just my 2 cents.
I bought my prime about a week ago, I honestly do not know what problem these people are having. I did not read about any hardware problems with wifi/GPS until after I bought two primes (one for me and one for wife). So I checked further and I do not experience any problems that are described here. Wifi is great no matter where I am and GPS is actually a lot better and much quicker to activate than my sprint epic touch phone. Believe me I was worried that I would have to take them back and settle for older technology or *cough* the iPad. Not sure, maybe they corrected it by the time I bought mine because both of mine work great, so I am happy for that
I am very happy with the prime and would easily recommend it to anyone.
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply.
In the UK we have the distant sellers act (think its called that) where you can return and item (opened or not) within seven days.
I figure thats a good enough chance for me to test it without worry
Any more answers welcome btw !!!
Cheers again

Don't forget to hit that "Thanks" button for posts that you really want to thank people for.
You'll never know until you try
I got my Prime in mid-January and aside from the GPS not being great I haven't had a single issue with it. It works perfectly for everything I have tried to do with it (watch videos, browse internet, light office work, playing games, etc).
GPS will never be fixed to the point where you can rely on it for navigation away from a WiFi source. There are very good reasons why Asus removed GPS from the official features list. If you can accept only rough positioning for apps like weather and location assisted searches you most likely not have any issues with the Prime at all.
I'm on my third Prime. First two had GPS/WiFi issues, one had bad screen bleed.
Picked up this one last Friday. GPS works very good. Not as good as my Samsung Infuse, but good enough. Tested it last night on the road for 30 minutes. Only at one point the GPS showed me one street over, but corrected itself in a minute or two. (Don't intend on using it for navigation, but wanted to see how good accurate the GPS was.)
WiFi is good and no screen bleed. I would say Asus fixed their QC issues with the C2 serial numbers, but other C2 owners say they have no GPS. Luck of the draw I suppose.
I think i'll certainly give it a go. GPS isnt a massive deal, obviously for location based searches it would be helpful but im not planning as using it as a sat nav
wifi and bt are the bigger issues of the 3
I have mine since almost a month now (C1 serial). This device is about the best thing i ever bought.
It does all i want, it's not too heavy, looks beautiful and everything is just smooth and works amazing.
Now it all depends on what you plan to use it for. If you use it primarily as a GPS device in your car, dont buy it. It'll suck for that. Dont get me wrong the GPS works, and i get a lock in under a minute, but i wouldn't want to depend on it.
Asus is very good with updates so far (and was also with the original Transformer) so i'm sure they will optimize the **** out the TF201. WIFI already got stronger for me with the patch that got released this week (didnt have issues before but now i have more bars).
But if you want a device for your basic IT stuff, browsing, games, movies, forums, emails etcetc. This is an amazing product. Go for it.
Of course there is always a chance that you get a bad unit. Its always like this when you buy a brand new high tech product. Really doesnt matter which company, Apple, Samsung... But that shouldnt prevent you from getting this sexy little thing The Prime is already very good and it will only get better through software updates.
thanks again everyone think im gonna take the plunge will report back
If you took 5 seconds to do a search you'd see 453 threads on this topic.

You should ask this question again in the refund thread.
