I wanted to ask one unresolved question to person who develop ( or maybe looked inside?? ) on Xperia P.
SXP have NovaThor U8500 like everyone know, but...
it have Adreno 205 ( like mentioned in whitepaper ) or Mali-400MP ( like in NovaThor U8500 SoC's ) ??
And if Mali, then how many cores??
I wanted to buy this phone, but need to know this first

Its Mail 400 and it is a single core.
@up: Thanks for an answer, but one more question, it's that single-core Mali-400 enough for every 2012 android games, and maybe for upcoming ones?

It seems to do okay on most releases. It wont be the top of the line graphics but it will play them. The only issue it has had so far is compatiblity which has gotten much better.
Thanks for reply to my questions

Hi all!
have been reading in this (awesome) forum for a while now. so first, thanks for the great work!
at the moment i own a ZTE blade with CM7 and its getting old. so i wanted to buy a new phone. sadly, all the new and great phones are massively big. i dont want to have to bua a manpurse so, the ray is one of the few phones that actually are small and where the community support (xda!) is great
the question is, is it intelligent/reasonable to buy a ray now? or should i wait? the xperia U is almost released and it has a dual core and nicer design (imo) but it also has a weaker battery and the worst part: no SD card slot.
as i want to use the phone as my mediaplayer as well, the 4gb of memory the U offers could be a bit of a pain.
so, my question:
is the ray that awesome that i should buy it now? or is there an alternative that you would recommend? what i expect from a phone:
small
nice screen resolution (>= 800x480)
reasonable battery
custom roms!
hope somebody can help me
IMHO, i would suggest you wait and see once Xperia U has been released and see it perform first.
if you are really sticking with the Sony brand and the listed specifications is what you prefer, the Xperia U is the closest one in comparison.
some downside (comparing it to ray) is the lower resolution camera 5MP, no SD card (4GB is not enough, at least 8GB or more), battery capacity is really low (not sure why?)
if i would choose my next Sony phone, I would go with the Xperia P.
Sony Experia U compared to Sony Ericsson Experia Ray
- better processor (dual core) and GPU (Mali400)
- no SD card slot
- lower quality camera
- smaller battery life
the decisive questions are
- how much better is the NovaThor U8500 CPU compared to Qualcomm Snapdragon SM8255 ?
- is the 8mpix ExmorR camera of Ray so much better than the simple 5mpix camera of U?
but even the NovaThor U8500 CPU is getting old...
so this is a hard decision, Experia Sola has the sd card but it will cost 50 euro more than Ray
here you can see Sola and Ray side by side: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9gO11MG6ss
future support for sola?
hi,
yes, the question is, how will the sola or U perform compared to the ray, because the ray is awesomely small.
this may be hard to answer, but would you think that it is likely that the Sola or U will get community support and custom roms like the 2011 xperia line?
the sola would be my fallback device. it is still reasonably small and has the sd slot. sadly a bad battery as well.

Camera quality cannot be said like this, it needs to be checked by comparing 2 photos.
Battery life needs to be tested also, as this information on websites are about phone in perfect conditions.
And how do you confirm that Mali400 is better than Adreno 205?

i think the 2012 experia line will be even more successfull with the community then the 2011 line

Mali400 is definitely better than Adreno 205, Samsung Galaxy S II uses the Mali400
"ARM's Mali-400 MP4 is the Fastest Smartphone GPU" http://www.anandtech.com/show/4760/arms-mali400-mp4-is-the-fastest-smartphone-gpufor-now
NovaThor uses a less powerfull version of Mali 400 than Samsung Galaxy S II
even Samsung I9070 Galaxy S Advance will use the same NovaThor 8500
but of course Mali400 and Adreno 205 are old now, in autumn new GPU will come Mali 604 vs Adreno 320
even Mali 604 is already old since it was announced in 2010 so in 2013 we get Mali 658

Xperia SX seems to be a real Xperia Ray successor: small & powerful. The problem is that international version is not announced yet. At the moment it's only available in Japan. But is probably worth waiting...

Xperia Ray is the best smartphone, i'm the crispy display and far better battery backup. The phone was announced in 2011 and if you have never purchased it yet then i would like to suggest you Xperia U. Limitation with storage but good phone with looks and powerful configuration.
if i thinking about xperia U, i thinkings :
"is that too bad for a phone w/o sd slot?"
"how about future mod about this phone?" (like how can i backup my phone using CMW. but who knows....XDA devs are awesome)
"how far google can support this phone in the future?" (i believes that google will update this phone to JB)
For mostly users (dont really care about novathor, snapdragon or else), this may like some phone with best performance in its class (regarding from price n specs).
Xperia U's targeted for user whos like using cloudstorage more (the future ways) than natively sdcard.
USB OTG, dont forget that.

needless to say, updating Xperia smartphones is not google's bussiness, ya know?
Xperia Sola Is most convenient one to your option
also remember that XDA users and developers will move to 2012 line
and Ray is 2011 ,by the time this devices will lose attention
or ,I think It's best if you waited for Google 5 Devices
I think those will be great options ,also will have the top XDA support + Google support

So some of the new Sony phones U and P have this ST-Ericsson SoC. Does anyone know if this is a dev-friendly SoC similar to Snapdragon? I am especially interested in seeing something like Cyanogenmod for the Xperia U.
Are there any other phones that have this SoC and have custom roms like CM?
It's not too different from what we've seen before, the A9 CPU and the Mali GPU are used in many devices already. So it shouldn't be too hard to make it work when ICS comes by.
The trends we are seeing in this part of the World (Asia) with the New Crop of "Value for Money" Smartphones is MediaTek Processors...
Be it Lenovo, Alcatel or all major vendors in Asia, China, Indonesia...they are starting to go with these Processors...
Having said that We see a lot of Bad Mouth about this brand of Proccy....so what the real deal?
All of us would agree when we are looking at a dual core smartphobe at under 200 $ prce bracket.....we cant expect a Snapdragon S3!
And looks like all new VFM Samrtphones from China OEM or other places who rebrand OEM are ending up being MediaTek!
Starting this thread to get some discussion going for more enlightenment....
Current MediaTek Proccys in Market :

bad mouth about mediatek, well i don't think so. mediatek processors should be at par with any other processors but the problem is afaik they dont release their kernel sources and they are still stuck with their sgx 531t gpu which is almost at par with our adreno 205 but not any better. however i might be wrong. i read about this a long time back and i dont remember the exact source.

Hello Everyone
Sorry if this was posted before, but I'm planning on switching from Xperia Arc S to Xperia P
I was reading through online reports / reviews from here, CNET, Sony's official website.
and I'm kinda confused, I know it's for sure better than the Arc S but I was wondering is it really worth upgrading?!
The main reason for me to upgrade is to avoid the lags / freezes I'm getting on ICS even after removing bloatwares, adding build.prop values and running init.d scripts (unless there is something else I'm missing).
So what do you think guys is it worth the upgrade?! Are there any stupid lags or are the Dual-core CPU and 1GB RAM doing their job?!
Also is Sony WhiteMagic technology really helping users to see under strong light? I can barely see my Arc S screen when I'm not under a roof !!
What about GPU?! I read a while back that Adreno 205 (which is included in the Arc S) is better than Mali-400MP unless that fact is changed
Thanks in advance

Adreno 205 is way weaker than Mali-400. The fact that Galaxy S3 uses Mali-400 is enough. Adreno 220 or 225 could match Mali-400, but Adreno 205 can't.

Surely dual core means something no lags whatsoever for me on offial ICS

I'm sorry for all the questions but I still have more
I read here that unlocking the bootloader is not really recommended for Xperia P?
Well I did that for my Arc S so I can flash custom kernels and always be rooted, I can't stay without root or else I wouldn't be able to test a single thing of Droid Manager :-/
Or else I wouldn't care about rooting the phone since I don't flash themes nor mods, I like the OS the way it is
I go to Xperia P from Xperia Neo. Xperia P is fast enought and not need for custom ROMs! In games Xperia p is faster as Xperia Neo with overclocked CPU up to 1,8 ghz, for example, Dead space on Neo lag in scenes with monsters, but on Xperia P whole game go smooth!

Well I don't really care about overclocking since I rarely overclock my Arc S, besides, it's a dual core CPU for a smart phone OS I don't think there will be a need for overclocking taking in consideration that I only play Temple Run, Unblock me when I'm board . I was just somewhat afraid from not finding it's performance smooth enough, but after all the feedbacks I got I think I'm gonna head for one in the next couple of days
it has good performance for a phone, it's beautiful, and with official ICS you have extended standby mode that can make your phone live some more days, I mean with "normal" phone use you can stay up to 2days more, so you charge it every 3 days, maybe 4 if you don't use it, that's quite good, IMO it's the perfect phone because of the price and it's 4' screen (above it's too large for me)
About the whitemagic tech, it's really good. Even when the sun shines on the screen I can see it. And not only barely see it like with the iphone 4 or the x10, it is really bright! I would dare to say that it's the brightest screen on the market for now. Else the phone is really smooth, does not lag, only right after boot for me, cuz I added a huge load of widgets. I scroll once through the homescreens and it's gone
That's exactly what I needed to know
Thanks guys for your feedbacks
Ok I haven't yet got the Xperia P
but I was reading online and I found it has Bluetooth 3?! and "Has a Corning® Gorilla® Glass display" ?! is that true?!

No, Bluetooth 2.1 and a hardened glass display that is produced by Sony in-house.

Actually, GS 3 is not as same the GPU as XPERIA P, because GS3 used Mali 400 MP4, U8500 used Mali 400 MP1...
