I just purchased a used Razr XT910 (Rogers) from Best Buy and started setting it up today. At one point, I used the volume buttons to mute the phone, and then things started acting up. The phone is now in persistent 'silent mode.' No matter how much or often I press the volume up button, within seconds the phone will mute itself. Even when I go into Settings and uncheck 'Silent Mode,' it will be checked again almost immediately. The phone is basically unusable now and I am very frustrated.
All I've done to the phone so far:
-no apps apart from what came stock have been installed
-tried turning off the phone and then on (no change)
-tried doing a factory reset, but it dumped me into AP Fastboot (why???)
-setup my Google account
-a few settings have been changed, ie. haptic turned off, vibrate turned off, etc.
-the volume buttons work and aren't stuck
The phone is running Gingerbread 2.3.6 and is from Rogers. Apparently, the phone was tested as working from Best Buy. Is this a hardware or software issue? Should I try doing another factory reset, even though last time it put me into fastboot?
Any suggestions or solutions?
it is strange try another reset and if it put you in fastboot there is an option from there to reset, i dont remember it though, google or youtube it
Well this might sound weird but push on the speaker location. A couple batches of RAZR have an issue (mine included) where the speaker contact comes loose and pressing on the speaker helps make the connection again.
Here is just one of the many threads on it https://vzwsupport.jive-mobile.com/#jive-discussion?content=/api/core/v2/discussions/772234

i don't think his problems with the speaker.. he seems to be referring to the volume option that keeps putting itself into silent mode..

Are you by any chance using the SmartActions or Tasker?
If you are using ICS you can go to Sound -> Volumes and set the ringtone volume from there.
Thanks for the replies, everyone. On Saturday, I decided to try a factory reset through Android again. This time, it reset the phone as it should have. I've been testing the phone (by muting and unmuting, etc.) since then, and it seems that the silent mode problem is now fixed. It looks as though it just needed a proper reset.
I love this phone by the way .

For months, I've been having a problem with the ringer auto-adjusting itself.
At work, I turn the volume down to level 3, and when I leave, I turn it back up to 6. About halfway through the day, I'll get a text, or a call, and my ringer is back up at level 6 all by itself. I find I have to re-adjust the volume a couple of times a day to keep it low.
Then when I leave work, within a few minutes of turning the volume back up, it returns to 3. It will do this a couple of times a night, and even on the weekends. It doesn't seem to have a regular time where it does it, but it happens almost every day. I can't tell you how many calls I've missed because of this.
Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a fix for it, or is it being caused by an app, or what? Doesn't matter what rom I'm running, it just keeps happening.
I've experienced this too on Infected 1.4.2 and 1.5 (sense 3.0) and Synergy Roms. Can't remember if i've seen this in stock and I haven't tried any other roms... It just hasn't affected me to the point where I cared...
I don't remember if it happened stock or not, but it has happened on Synergy, Infected, and now Warm. I just can't figure it out.
mine does the same thing bro.. im not rooted.. stock..
Maybe it's an app causing it?
still cant figure it out?? its drivin me crazy!! ill have the volume down all the way some one will call and its full blast.. ****s gona blow my speaker!
Do you have a list of your apps? Maybe everyone having this issue have a common app installed.
Pocket mode on?

I noticed some ringtones play on media volume while others play on phone volume. Just thinking, but I do remember having a control issue where my media volume kept reseting to a default level randomly.

Pocket mode was turned on, but I don't believe that had anything to do with it.
I may have figured it out when it does it though. Every time I make or receive a call, the volume goes back up. I just tested it by making 3 calls in a row, and every time I hung up, the ringer volume was back up. I would turn it down, make a call, and it's back up again. I just wish I could figure out why it's doing that.
Hi there!
I have the following problem with my S3 (bualf1 austrian vodafone branding )
The screen stays on after the charger is plugged and the screen turns on after charging is complete!
I've done a factory reset and the problem has seemed to solved, but yesterday the problem has occured again!
I've really tried everything (every option, enabling / disabling everything, uninstalling apps, ...)
When shutting the phone down, the screen reacts as supposed (turns off while charging )
Any suggestion for me?

same problem as mine, occured only once. my workaround is by manually lock the phone (press power button). what kernel you use?
Are you absolutely sure this is not linked to a software you have installed?
There are certain titles that allow you to leave the screen on whilst being charged. Look carefully, it could be quite obscure.
As you said, it cleared when you did a Factory Reset but has now returned ~ thus indicating a recently installed App has resumed the screen on operation.
In reference to the phone coming on when fully charged, that is normal but the most likely reason it is not going back off again is due to whatever App setting you have that is then telling the phone once the screen is on keep it on.

Stock kernel, stock (austrian branded) firmware!
Manually locking works for me, but when den charging is finished the phone's display turns (and stays) on - that is my problem!

Thats the same thinkings i have, but i didn't managed to find out, what app this could be...
the strange thing is, it works as intended when no power source is plugged (screen turns off after 30 seconds), it just doesn't turn off while charging
no idea anyone?

I'm afraid without knowing which Apps you have installed it would be difficult to find the culprit.
If it were me I would do the following:-
1. Factory Reset again only this time do it from Recovery ~ [The recovery mode in Samsung Galaxy S III can be entered by pressing the Volume Up Key, Center button, and holding both simultaneously press the Power Button]
2. From the options provided select Wipe data/factory reset and also you need to select Wipe Cache partition and then reboot your device by selecting reboot system. You now have a completely cleared system so the next stage is important.....
3. Just install the settings, nothing more and certainly don't let Google Play reinstall your Apps.
4. Connect your power cable and see if once the S3 is charged the screen comes ON to notify you it is charged BUT THE SCREEN THEN TURNS OFF after a brief period. If it does then you at least will know under the basic setup your phone is fine. Now another slow but probably most important bit........
5. Start installing your Apps (say ten at a time) and then reboot your phone when all ten are installed and again start charging the phone.
At this stage we want to see what happens after charging is complete. If all is fine you then know what Apps are installed don't effect the screen ON problem, so continue installing another ten Apps and again reboot the phone and apply the charger to see if once charged the screen turns ON then OFF.
Continue repeating this procedure until you notice after a charge the screen this time does not turn OFF.
6. Right..... you now know the problem is being caused by one of the last ten Apps you installed. So, uninstall each App in turn (making sure you reboot each and every time you uninstall) and again recharge. This should eventually lead to one individual App that has caused the problem (the remaining Apps you uninstalled from the last ten can now be re-installed).
7. Investigate that App thoroughly to see if it alters anything on your phone that is causing the problem. Also name the App so we can look at it too.
It's a slow process granted but it's the only way you are going to find out what is causing the issue.
Basically, if it's happening from a fresh Factory Reset (via Recovery using the methods I mentioned above) then it's an issue directly with the phone.
If all is well then it's an issue with an individual App.
Good Hunting......
Same thing happened to me today and i never noticed it happen before..
Went to plug the phone in and the screen was on so i figured "Oh it will turn off after 15 seconds like usual" came back 5 minutes later still on.... uhh okay, so i hit the power button the screen went off.. I went to the restroom came back.. SCREEN BACK ON AGAIN? hmmm dubya tee eff? Turned it off again with the power button.. This time it stayed off..
Stock firmware latest upgraded 2 days after the 4th of the july.
Which firmware do you have?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
Well, that's what i've done:
1.) factory reset
2.) reinstall all settings and mailaccounts
3.) reboot and see if it still works
4.) install and configure 5 apps
5.) reboot and see if it still works
6.) repeat steps 4. und 5. as long as all apps are reinstalled and reconfigured
and so, finally the guilty app was found!
EXTENDED CONTROLS causes the problem, that the screen stays on when a charger is plugged!
Tested it on all 4 own mobiles, all of them are working as normal again!!!
THANKS BEARD!!!
My only glitch so far has been a volume problem...
Sometimes, especially after Netflix or YouTube, my media volume, and sometimes others, will be stuck on silent. Using the volume buttons won't work. Trying to change it in settings won't work. The only thing I've found is to either reenter the app and exit, or reboot the phone.
Is anyone experiencing this? If so, am I missing something or is it really a glitch?

I have the same issue. Used reboot yesterday and so far all is ok. Only media volume stuck on my verizon note 2.

I had this problem last night, only ringer volume wouldnt move until a reboot. I actually noticed too that audio through the headphones was beyond plss poor until I rebooted the first time. Since then, pretty good. Strange

great, i thought it was just mine. at least a reboot fixes it - but really annoying though.
same issue -- media volume stuck -- note 2 -- verizon
I have been experiencing the same issue as described by others above. Galaxy note 2, Verizon. It seems to be associated with use of the headphone jack while also running audio-related apps (music streaming).
Unfreeze volume without reset
Same issue on Note 2 at&t. Happens when the phone goes from mute to unmute I find. I was able to unfreeze it by holding down the home button until the shortcut menu pops up, the go to the pie chart icon on the bottom left of the screen, then go to the RAM tab and hit clear memory. It worked for me when I just tried it and it is quicker than resetting the phone.
Hi Guys,
Always loved loading custom roms on my androids. Never had a problem I had to ask for help with until now. Please bear with me; I'm trying not to be noob-ish.
I'm running Resurrection Remix 4.4.2 on my Galaxy S2 GT-9100. I installed it last night. Had a big problem (after rebooting into recovery and then wipingdata/factory reset) - I couldn't mount my sdcard1 (externalSD) in CWMrecovery > hence I couldn't install the rom.zip from my SD card. I ended up using adb sideload to push the rom and GAPPS onto phone.
ROM working great so far, loving it! Suddenly; I can't adjust the audio slider for my main audio. The ring-volume and alarm volume can both be adjusted - and the speaker works when either of these two are used. My music/audio volume however won't lift up off zero. The speaker has the line through it to say it's muted completely.
I've tried using my hardware buttons, and the touchscreen to adjust it. I've searched Google & XDA. I've looking through all the settings on my phone. No luck. I've tried restarting phone. Can't think of any settings I've adjusted that could cause this. I was playing with contacts all afternoon, syncing FB images & organising Google contacts.
Please can somebody give me a hand - I've got my wedding coming up in 3 weeks and I don't have millions of hours to troubleshoot this alone.
Thanks in advance, let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
****This is strange. Just restarted my phone and it works again. Not sure then what is triggering the issue. Could be something to do with Open Mic for Google Now (it listens actively for "Ok Google"). Could be something to do with USB cable being plugged in and it thinks it is docked? Not sure any more. Working for now.****
****Now lost audio again! Was simply using my phone, using Google now to test the commands etc. Audio level dropped to zero, and I can't lift it up. Why! Perhaps it happened after phone went into standby?**** I've just checked and my WiFi doesn't go to sleep when phone is standby - it's already set to stay on.
My phone is not playing

And do not hear what I'm talking about during a conversation
And I do not hear anything either
