Hi!
I am having stuttering issues while playing 1080p mkv files over wi-fi. The video stutters after every 10 seconds for about 2-3 seconds The wi-fi connection speed is 72Mbps which according to my search is the maximum you get with SIII.
The file I am trying to play is 2.3 GB and around 25 mins long using MX player. The video plays fine on my laptop, also connected with 72Mbps speed.
The only reason I am asking is because sole purpose of my soon to be owned nexus 7 tablet is to watch 1080p, so it would be worthless if I am going to face same problem with Nexus 7. So both Nexus 7 and Galaxy S III users are requested to reply.
I figured the general forum is more appropriate for this as compared to QA forums, I request mods to kindly move to the appropriate section if I am being ignorant.......
Thank you very much.

You expect to stream mkv files on nexus 7 that does not have builtin codec support for that format, with third party, software decoded app? Without a glitch?
Hmm

Yeah I did it, but it would eat up space if I keep 1080p for TV and 720p for mobile devices, plus it would need more time ripping 2 times..... Thanks for the reply though.....

Thanks for your reply, but actually third party player (MX player) is better than the stock video player to stream on S III, isn't it......?
Well if it really isn't possible then I might have to rip 720p as well besides 1080p. 1080p wouldn't make quality any better on a 720 screen anyways, or will it......?

Maybe that's the problem right there, I'm no kind of expert but maybe the fact that it's a 720p screen and your streaming a 1080p video is causing the stuttering

No I was talking about Nexus 7, Nexus 7 doesn't support mkv files......
Actually I was thinking as it can stream 1080p video to a TV using Allshare cast, it shouldn't be a problem to do vice versa.........?

Because you tested internal, the connection itself and the resolution, i guess the problem is the combination of streaming and the unsupported format or the format only.
Maybe try to convert the video to a supported format and test again or check another player (or both).
About allshare i can't tell, haven't used it, always used plain dlna from settings and didn't encounter issues, no matter which direction.

The same video file runs smooth when played from phone memory, and stutters when played over wi-fi, so I am pretty sure the format or player aren't the culprits here...... May be there are some settings in MX player which I remained unable to explore, or any other player able to prefetch the frames and keep'em in local buffer, although I am pretty much sure that's what the grayed out bar in MX player represents.......
Thank you all for your time, I guess ripping movies in 720 is the only viable solution here......
Try Qloud media, I use this to stream 1080p HD content from my laptop flawlessly, you have to install the software explained in the app description but it's easy and brilliant once it's setup.

i have the same problem as the OP.
I just tried Qloud app and it works great.
However what software does is realtime conversion. Not streaming the original file.
So there is some small quality loss since it converts original file and stream it to the phone on the fly.
There is still problem with direct streaming of 1080p file unfortunately.

Hello, I have recently encountered issues with regards to 1080p video playback.
Being aware that the TF201 has 4 cores, I had expected smooth playback with no lag.
When playing media files from my Plex media server, the 1080p video files play flawlessly. Though when playing the exact same files locally from the Transformer's directory, the video plays with extreme lag and jittery.
Video Players Tested with (Results in Lag) : MX Video Player, MoboPlayer
Anyone know a possible solution?
Thanks In Advance.

Are you using an SD card to play your video files? using a class 6 or lower card may cause studdering in HD video files. You'll want a class 10 card.

It shouldn't. Usually internal flash storage is a lot faster than removable flash storage. I doubt ASUS would go cheap and use cheap flash storage on their device.
Do you know what type of video format you are playing? mkv is a video container, which usually hold h.264 video files and 5.1 digital sound format, but can be different.
Ask Andyx over in his thread, "what would you like to know about the prime" . He might can help you. It should be able to play 1080p files flawlessly as it's been tested as so by a few members here that have it and major reviewers. It might be your encoding. It should play with no lag or issues from internal storage or SD card. Actually been tested by major reviewer, I think Anadtech or technobuffalo, to play just as flawlessly from SD card than from internal storage.

The file AndyX played on his YouTube vid was 1080P MKV file also. Which played with no issues. I'd say run these same stats by him to compare to what he ran in his video. There's another guy here to that ran a high quality video test. His thread is called something like you got questions, I got questions. Those 2 and candy are the only ones it's seems that have a prime also already that might can help.
The only thing I can think is that the file is encoded using some odd parameters that do not jive with the Prime and the reason it works with Plex is because it's doing some kind of decoding, even if on a lower level.

I'd go with that. I've seen some nutty as a fruit cake parameters on mkv's I've shared from friends. one of them just will not convert in handbrake, it looks like crap and yet played natively as an mkv file it looks fine. when I delved into the frame encoding etc it was bizarre.
I'd go with a grotty mkv file over the prime having an issue here.

Dice Player on the Market should do the trick. Works really well and plays everything I throw at it, but the "Paid" version seems to be missing from the Market at the moment due to Google Checkout issues with the developer.
Anand did a really good review testing all kinds of video codecs. He was able to play 1080p H.264 high profile streams at up to 40Mbps just fine using DicePlayer.

Technically speaking, it can, the only reason why I am currently unable to do so is perhaps due to software issues. Playback is perfectly fine via media servers, but I encounter issues when playing back the same videos in local storage.
I currently am on task 14 with the pershoot kernel OC'd at 1400.. I have transferred a 720p MKV file to my Gpad and so far have tried bs player, dice player, mobo player and mx player and none of them play it right.. The sound plays fine but the video slows right down. I dont understand as the same file plays fine on my Gnote
Any help?

720p mkv isn't enough info to tell if the movie should or should not play well on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Read here about the Tegra 2 and its multimedia/video capabilities: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060825
Just realized that Galaxy Note would obviously perform faster as
1) The DPI (Display Per Inch) is ofcourse smaller hence the H/W rendering requires less processing power to display on a somewhat, abnormally mediocre screen?
2) The tab however has a 1280x800 resolution scaling at a large DPI which requires more processing power. I won't call this hardware/tab's fault, more like weather you use HC or ICS they are all based of the same glitchy platform. HC was never stable platform compared to a regularly updated Gingerbread firmware.
if someone has the s3 already or is getting it tomorrow ( mine coming on Wednesday ) can you download or put a 1080p .mkv movie (7-12GB) on your phone or sd card and play it using stock player and dice player. can you see if it will play smoothly? any lags, audio issues.
i would love to see that test aswell,+ if it would be possible over MHL to TV.to see how much frames sg3 is doing while streaming 1080p to TV

Hi guys,
can sg3 play high profile 1080p h264 videos @ 40 mbs like tegra 3 does?sg2 does not....
Here http://www.dvdloc8.com/clip.php?movieid=13599&clipid=4 and http://www.auby.no/files/video_tests/ (video 'birds') you can download and play stress videos with hardware accelerated video player like dice player, bs player , mx video player etc.
Furthermore , can you play a 1080p youtube flash video ( in browser, not using youtube app), does it stutter???

1080p file playing very smoothly with some ever so slight stutters(not irritating by any means) here and there, which I guess could be due to my awfully slow external sd-card). Didn't get any sound due to it containing only the trueHD soundtrack, so I'll try another file on the internal SD-card soon! Still 20% on the download to go. I use my phone to watch movies from time to time and some of my series are in .mkv files. I use MplayerX to decompress and watch these files. I recently watched Django Unchained on my phone (in .mp4 format) and it was playing smoothly, however whenever I use .mkv files the picture seems to lag and sometimes the audio doesn't synchronize with the video. Is this because of the app or is it too much for the phone to handle?
Note: Each of these was in 720p.

mp4 and mkv are just containers. They tell us nothing about the actual codec of the video. But if HW decoding is not available, then the file might be 10 bit h264, which is too much for even some computers. You're not going to get perfectly smooth playback on a phone then.

Definitely bull****, don't listen to this, I have One X and it smoothly plays 720p, there's videos actually showing exactly that, on One X. So, it's some other issue. Try enabling hardware decoder or disabling - either or might be the key.

no need to load movies to the note 3 you can stream 1080p mkv with Qloud and a dual band router it works flawlessly
Sorry I didn't get back sooner but that's exactly the post I used. You need to unzip the archive to a location on the phone. Then point to it. I also enabled hw acceleration.
Streaming is great but something to be said for having a movie available without needing to have bandwidth for it or even a connection. With 96gb available on mine w/ 64 gig sd card, space not so much of a concern.

There are two ways for you to solve it

As for Anime it has to be VLC or nothing, and even then there always some break up. For some reason the Japs like to encode there anime in 10-bit 720p MKV with dual audio (if available) and subs. I thought that the Note 3 would handle HD anime better but it's more or less the same problems. So it's down to waiting on further VLC development, i wish they get a move on as VLC hasn't really improved that much in 18 months and there still loads to improve on. it's only 80% there.
Great thanks
