Can someone explain to me the difference between the Android and Ported Development categories? I read the posts at the beginning of each, but they weren't very helpful in distinguishing the two.
I'm interested in flashing a JB ROM, but I see several JB ROMs in Ported, but only one (CM10) in Android. What's the difference between the ROMs in each category?
Thanks in advance.
Ported development usually implies that the ROM has been hell raised , or that the work done to the ROM was a kang. Android Development is all "original" development.

Aokp since it isn't available directly to the i777 (no official support by team kang) it took a lot of work by task and ktoonsez to get it to work (not to mention their custom apps for it) so that's why even though it is android open kang project it isn't just ported development.

This. Yeah it's in Android Development because of the amount of customization and work it takes to bring it here. Its much much more than a simple hell raise haha. To the OP--You should stop on over to his thread and check it out ;-p

Task has said that it is easy to sync cm sources but it's a ***** to sync aokp sources if your device is not officially supported (which ours isn't) so although they didn't make the changes to the rom itself like team kang does, they put in a lot of work to get it to compile and work properly.

It was a term coined in the infuse forum first I believe, it's basically porting from a similar device. There's like 5 files that differentiate between the software for our phones and the software for the i9100.

If we are using kang rom it is safe ?
Kang doesn't mean stolen. You can't steal open source code...
Kang means it was compiled by someone that isn't part of the official team/the person who made the code & isn't officially supported. So like when people say "Self-Kang" it means that they made the code themselves, but it's not officially supported by CM.

KANG does mean stolen code m8, it's a very old term, and it's not something specific to android or open source software.

This is from another forum:
This is the definition you would look for in Wikipedia Kang - A term used for stealing others intellectual property and claiming it as your own. (ie. When a developer uses another developer's work, and then publishes the end product as their own.)
Like building a cyanogen rom from source and making small edits and redistributing it. Not exactly as bad as it sounds like the definition suggests... sometimes, it it.

Or...why not just look here on XDA, in their WIKI, and see how XDA defines it?

As mentioned, you can't kang open source'd code.
You can, however, fail to attribute that code, and that's generally what kang'd refers to now.
[nothing personal, just incorrectly using kanged is starting to pet peeve me almost to the point of the rampant incorrect usage of bricked. using 'vector' by a layman (ie, non military tactician or graphic designer) to make things sound more sophisticated is a close 3rd]
I am not trying to be rude, but curious about it. When can I expect AOKP officially support AT&T SGSII? Probably I9100 has to be first officially supported by AOKP, then AT&T version will be supported next.
I know task650 keeps very wonderful AOKP rom. But one feature I miss from official version is keeping old ones. I think task650 updates about every two days, and it is hard to follow his every move.
Love you task650.

Nah
AT&T version means all the bloatware included. AT&T is working on a ICS version for our phones, however the guy they hired to do it has probably never touched a phone before and is the only one working on - hence the reason it is taking so long to get released. They are more worried about new phones then old ones, and this will always be the case.
I also don't think AT&T will ever release a Vanilla build of Android for any phone. Heck even look at the Nexus, even that had some AT&T stuff in it.
I'm pretty sure that the OP meant that he wishes the i777 was officially supported by the AOKP team on their website, which has nothing to do with AT&T.
That said:
1. No one knows when if/when it will be officially supported. I think the AOKP team would need to own the phone first. Regardless, I think Task does a way better job maintaining his build, fixing issues faster than the AOKP team.
2. If you need an archive of older versions, just go to Task's repository: http://goo.im/devs/task650/aokp/i777
I don't believe the AOKP team will ever support the SGS2. If they want to, they already would. Right now, task's AOKP is an official.
Yeah I'd have to agree. Tasks version will be as official as it gets. I won't complain!

Yes, but he doesn't support them. I think what he's wishing for is a datum build, a build that it is kosher(or even expected) for people to continue using after newer builds are released. Such a milestone build would be supported until the next milestone is released.
This isn't how Task operates though, and it's his rom, his rules. To him every build is a milestone build.

Every build is stable. There are really no major issues or Task wouldn't release it. Minor bugs always are gonna exist. So pick the latest release ans just stick with it for a while. Bam. AOKP stands for Android Open Kang Project, CM9 is CyanogenMod 9. Basically they are both similar roms that are built from open source vanilla android, and can be built for basically any android phone so long as a developer is willing to put in the time. They both share some code with each other, yet AOKP tends to have a few more tweaks, and both are crazy fast. They also have a theme engine that allows people to make themes that can be applied on any phone running AOKP or CM9, regardless of which phone.
As for learning other stuff, I point you here for terminology: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22223555
And for how to root/rom go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=24539068
I suggest just taking some time on stock to learn the ins and outs of how the stock software works, and reading as much as possible on here, before you try to do anything.

Both are based off of AOSP which is the Android Open Source Project. Google released the source code for Android ICS and developers take that code and make their own roms. CyanogenMOD is basically pure Android ICS but with some extras. AOKP is based on AOSP but with themes, tweaks, etc. They both are different and both very good.
We currently have both roms but unofficial versions of the roms.
AOKP: http://aokp.co/index.php/news
CyanogenMOD: http://www.cyanogenmod.com/
An official before source drops Nice. Unofficial still works great though.
I thought AOKP was based on CM9

No it isn't? I mean, it works and all but in JellyBean ROMS, all that i have tried have 3rd party apps as the camera.apk, like jb camera +. There is no touch to focus, so i ask again, once the jb source is released for i1900, will there be FULL camera functionality for 4.1 roms?
The only JB we have is AOSP.
We have AOSP camera.
Its not broke. theres nothing missing
Touchjizz camera might have different functions.
And if any JB AOSP builds come with a 3rd party camera, the Dev is a retard.
So to answer your question. Who knows. havent seen JB Touchjizz. how can we know what the functions are.

Phalanx, You are not very smart are you? Why do there have to be some many obnoxiousness people on these forums. They go around, finding threads of people asking for help, and antagonize them for things. If you're going to be a prick and give unless, sarcastic comments that completly in no way are reverent to the topic, why do they even let you on here?
May i just ask why you think that forgetting to do a full wipe and formatting /system partition would make my touch to focus not be supported? You probably don't even know what touch to focus is, and oviously don't know what problem i am having. If you really need to pick on people over the internet to make yourself feel better, then i guess i'll just ignore it, but there are better ways to spend your time.
Also, MIUI is not closed source. I don't know why someone would say that, but its not true. I had reason to believe that the reason that we had to use a third party application as the camera app because the camera drivers weren't released for jellybean, but i guess its because the MIUI camera doesn't yet work with Samsung based jellybean ROMS.

Ha, alright. I didn't mean to respond so dramatically, its just really hard to understand internet-sarcasm. And i wouldn't have got mad if you weren't doing it more than just here, but what really got me goin' was how wiping before install is kinda irrelevant.
Anyway, to be honest... My question has not been answered.
I, personally, cannot find a single Jellybean ROM for the i777 that has the AOSP camera,Stock android camera, MIUI camera, Samsung camera, or any other fully functioning camera. Maybe i am missing something, but they all seem to be using this camera:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moblynx.cameraics&hl=en
This is not the AOSP camera. And i am not incorrect in saying that it is not fully functional. There is no touch to focus. Now, some app developers have made apps (such as ICS Camera) that make you think they are touch to focus, advertising it as a funtion. But they are not true touch to focus. Yes, you can touch the screen and the camera will autofocus, but you cannot choose where in the depth of field you wish to focus. I have searched and searched, and wish someone could send me a link explaining this FULLY so i can shut up already. lol

You can install halo manually. AOKP would be awesome.

anyway thanks for maclaw to make AOKP for us
I would love aokp cm10.1. When I used an older version when it first came out, it had the lowest ram usage I'd ever seen on cm10.1. So I say yay to it.

You are quite confused cm10.1 and aokp jb are two different roms
So there cannot be an aokpcm10.1
First Complete With the Ongoing ROMS
I mean no offense here. Why don't we let him to complete with the tasks he is already on?
He finished CM9 but still a few bugs left. Currently, he is concentrating more towards S3 Mini. That doesn't mean(as he says, I have not abandoned Ace) he has forgotten Ace Users, yet finishing off the pending work would always be perfect.
He is giving the best he can so not to mess up with more new stuff.
Unless the mclaw guys are thinking about removing ad fly on their website, they are not welcome on XDA and are not to use the forums to advertise their work or draw users to their site.
