Its been a while since i post on the vibe forums or actually do anything with my vibe but im thinking about upgrading my cm7 -> possibly cm10 or another 4.1 rom.
Well the only thing that ever stopped me from using ics as my perm daily driver is the EU bug. I cant afford a new phone to risk hardbricking it for a better user experience.
TLDR; can i upgrade to Jellybean or am i risking getting the EU bug on that too?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app
Well if you got to ICS, I think the bug is not seen in jb cause of the similarities between how they work, if it worked for ICS, it will work for jellybean. Anyway if you do, DO NOT HIT RESET. REBOOT TO RECOVERY AND SEE IF YOU STILL HAVE ACCESS. If you do have access to internal SD Odin back to stock and retry. Anyway, to flash a jellybean ROM you need to flash an ICS ROM beforehand or you will get boot looped.

Well its not the passing over ics that wworries me.. i ran ics for like a month without the bug.. im just worried about having jb on my phone for a prolonged amount of time..
So can anyone gimme a yes or no, does the EU bug exist on JB?

I don't think anyone has seen the EU bug for Jelly bean. I personally haven't flashed jb because I'm not sure either. I wouldn't risk it if its your only phone but that's just my personal opinion. It took awhile for the EU bug to show up with ics so I wouldn't rule it out yet with jb.

I've been using Helly Bean for the last couple of days, and I can say honestly that I've never had such a great ROM installed.
I never installed ICS due to the dreaded EU bug. Scared me off. I have my fingers crossed like everyone else that it doesn't happen on JB. Maybe whatever the heck caused it has been fixed? Not sure if anyone ever discovered the exact cause.
If your looking to go to JB, definitely consider HB, I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with it.

I'm still working on it in the Cappy threads, but for now no one has gotten it on JB. That does not mean it won't occur.
Remember that people were getting it in the early days of ICS, only they didn't know what it was until later on when it was given a name. IIRC Jasonhunterx got it in early January shortly after the first ICS builds came out. He was actually one of the first ones on the Vibrant side.
Now some people are getting it on Galaxy Tab (older tablet versions). As always, it is up to you and still totally random.

Considering JB rom dev is still in nascent stages, it hasn't reached the critical mass ICS has achieved (with regards to the sheer number of users). Maybe EU happens. Maybe it doesn't. Still a roll of the dice.
If it does happen and you get bit, the vold.fstab emmc swap does work on JB (ie. I've tested it on HellyBean with my post-EU Vibe). The syntax is different but uses the same concept. Good luck.
Flashing Roms is a risky business as what all of the devs are saying there's a chance you'll gonna "brick" your Vib
Obviously we're here because we don't really care about the risk or i would say we are not scared of the risk.
In short, EU bug is nothing really compared to the risk we all take... the dreaded "brick"!
Been running an EU bugged phone and at this point there's really no difference whatsover in terms of UI compared to the non EU bugged phone. Except of course going thru that pain in **s process of getting your SD card working to be your Internal/external...
But after that it's all normal...
At this moment there's nothing to be scared of really, you can easily avoid it...
You can play with JB roms though it's still on it's infancy... everything is test as of the moment but there's lots of excitement...
Or you can play with the more stable ICS roms if you're coming from GB or Froyo it would be a whole new experience.
I've so far seen one report in the Galaxy Tab forums of user compuser84 asking why he was seeing the EU screen.
I booted my tablet today and got the encryption failed message and needed to factory reset.
I'm running cm-10-2012013-Nightly on a p1c.
Has anyone had this happen? This is the first time I've had it happen to me.
After I did the reset, the tab booted fine and seems to be working fine.

I explained that this could be the EU bug, and he responded with the following.
My battery ran down to 5% so I shut the Tab off until I could get home to charge it.
I charged it to full and booted it.
I got the Encryption Unsuccessful message Factory reset so I did.
Tab booted fine after that but I haven't done anything with it until I found out if this is an issue others are having.
I don't want the internal memory fried and may just go back to GB, though I really love the way the Tab runs on Jellybean.

I have a T-Mo S2 running JB, a Vibrant running JB, and a Nexus 7 running JB Paranoid Android. I haven't gotten the EU bug on any of them. I think I read somewhere that the EU bug is gone on Jelly Bean.

Yeah I was thinking they could just port it over? Like they did 2.2 roms
the leak was already ported... just as this will be. i wouldn't expect gps, but hopefully we can get an actual recovery...
So when it is official could we just Odin back to stock and upgrade legitimately through kies?

As a guess, given how the Froyo rollout went, I'd guess that we're in for several months of waiting for this officially.

Lol, CM7 is a joke on the Vibrant. CyanogenMod is always a step ahead of the drivers available for Samsung devices, so it will *never* work properly on a Samsung. By the time they have what they need to make it work, they're already pushing out a new "no wifi no gps no nothing useful" version. Nothing against CyanogenMod, but... Try CM7 (or any version) is never much of an answer on the Vibrant and recommending it to anyone is pointless.
That said...
Every time anyone posts a thread asking when, T-Mobile kills a kitten, Baby Jesus cries, and another week will go by before the update.

From the thread on CM7 for the Vibrant:
Known bugs:
You can't get into recovery/download without the 3 buttons combo. (You can't from inside the ROM, so do NOT flash if you can't use the 3 button combo.)
Problems switching between 2G and 3G when data is connected. (You may get un-reliable data.)
Compass. (works not at 100%)
Video playback may be choppy with some formats.
GPS is broken.
May have many other bugs that are unlisted.
Polling problem on RIL (Works after you lock and unlock your phone.)
USB Tethering is currently broken
Battery life has significantly improved with latest unofficial nightly (3/31) and the latest Additional kernel. See below. However, it is still not as good as stock.

I've been reading a lot of threads about the ups and downs of ics, I'm yet to flash it and might stay on gb for a little while especially since I've been reading threads were people have tried to go back to gb and weren't able to do to either user error or otherwise. I'm wondering if the gb development will lose support do to ics being out, I'm sure it will especially once ics becomes more stable across the board.

I find ICS alot more enjoyable than GB even if it's just a leak : it's stable enough to be a daily rom, and I work alot with my phone.

I can't say for sure, but from what I have read and my personal experience, installing the one click exe first, then cwm, then the custom ROMs is a good way to go. I did this and have zero issues.

The one click ICS leak is a stock image. It formats the ENTIRE internal SD card. You will lose everything including root and recovery.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk
If you flash through Odin it formats your drive and no root. But it's not an issue to root it. However if you flash the.collectives basic build or dagr8 build through cwm you'll have.root, and it'll be debloated

What I am trying to say overall is that I have read about less issues with phones who did the following:
1) Install one click Odin Leak (reboot and let it all set up of course)
2) Install CWM Recovery via Odin
3) Flash Dag or Collective ICS ROM
These steps will give you all the components of ICS (including bootloaders etc), CWM, rooted and debloated.
There does seem to be one person who can't get back to GB after doing this. But there are multiple threads in the QA section which show otherwise. I have not tried going back to GB yet, as I am giddy every time I use my phone now. ICS has brought it to another level. No way I am ever looking back, especially with something from the Collective on the way.
I installed and rooted ICS very easily
now i wish i hadnt , My ICS is wayyyyyyyy to buggy for me, i get alot of FC's and reboots, wish i had waited and now want to go back to GB but im just going to wait out the bugginess till a more stable rom comes out. I can say when ICS is running good it is way smoother than GB but that isnt too often with me but good news is the collective has something cooking up and should only be a little bit before changing out this leaked rom !!!
just my $.02

forgive me for being a dumb a$$ but I'm slightly confused about the steps you posted. Wouldn't step 2 have to come first, and i thought the Odin one click was the ics rom (step 3)? Here's what I've done to my phone. Rooted, installed cwm and completed a cwm back up, i than downloaded ics from the picture in the dev section onto my phone. From this point would all i have to do is go into cwm and flash my downloaded ics and would that sort of be your 1,2,3 steps? Sorry for not fully understanding.

Hopefully that link still works, but if it doesn't I think that Moped Ryder has a thread where he rehosted those files. You'll have to look around for it though.
Nice thing about that ROM is that it comes rooted, and busyboxed for you.

I know your asking for a GB ROM but you should really move on, Chimera 1.1 is the future. Go ahead and install Chimera 1.1 ROM, if you don't like this ROM then something is seriously wrong. Chimera comes with a custom installer with multiple options for kernels, apps, keyboards etc. The custom installer is awesome, you can literally set it up to install whatever you want and whatever you DONT want. www.team-passion.com is where you will find it, try it seriously! Worst thing that happens is you don't like it but its really the best ROM i have ever used, period. If you do install, choose apex launcer or even samsung launcher if you want the samsung look, the cndlauncher has problems so do not install it! O yea, 911 has been proven to work on chimera also, try it dude.

From what Ive read it literally encrypts partitions making odin or Jtag useless. The "fix" is actually a work around from what I see. You substitute your external sdcard for android required partitions.

No to go too far off topic, but if you are running ANY ICS rom, you need to be aware of the risks of this bug. It doesn't descriminate. Just yesterday, someone Odin'd to JFD and flashed all the way to ICZen (which has been the least effected ROM) and got it. Fortunately he was able to somehow get it back to full working status, but if you are unaware to what this bug is, I suggest at the very least to make a backup of your internal_sd. The internal is what gets Encrypted and right now there is NO key and only a handful of people have come back from it. There is no solution or concrete cause for this bug.
Good Luck.

picky about having all the filesystems initialized with valid data,
and mistakenly assumes that anything that's not zero or valid is
encrypted, refusing to go any further.
In Gingerbread and before, anything that wasn't valid was expected to
be invalid, and Android would just re-initialize it, regardless of
whether it was zero or not.
You're lucky you didn't have to work with Honeycomb, where zeros were
considered encrypted.

If you read the EU threads, it's obvious life goes on post-EU. I got hit a while back, partitioned an external sdcard, and then used the emmc / sdcard swap to deal with the loss of access to my internal sd. If I get hit again, it's much easier to manage the situation with a portable ext sdcard. For one person, it was as simple as a chkdsk from a pc fixing the issue without losing any data.
Everyone's risk tolerance level will vary, but the benefits / performance and dev progression of ICS far out weigh any reason for me to consider downgrading. Imo, it's nasty, yes ... yet a manageable situation as long as you know the risks (and be proactive about backing up your data to another device or cloud acct).
Since EU, I religiously keep my TiBu data sync'd in Dropbox and consciously steer towards apps with online sync / backup capabilities, etc.
Moral of the story is ... once you go thru it, it's only as painful as how well you've heeded this man's sage advice:

My i777 is coming in the mail tomorrow. I'm very excited, its my first Android. I've been researching custom firmware and stuff like that for about a month around the web. I just have no idea where to start. I believe my phone still has some form of 2.3 on it, but it could be the current 4.0.4 ICS.
From what I understand, I update the drivers on my computer with Kies, download Odin to root the device and then what? Or superoneclick? I'm interested in CM10 but I know the bugs are still being worked out. I need my camera, MMS, bluetooth, 3g data, at&t radios, mhl, Touchwiz toggles, all the functionality with no soft keys at the bottom. JB would be great if its possible. Other wise I might as well just update the phone to stock ICS and root it for other stuff I want like sixaxis and over/underclocking apps.
There is a reason we have stickies

There's things like KK 2.3.6, is that custom GB firmware? I know there is lots of information but no where to start.
pretty sure it would make more sense once you actually have the device in hand....seems pointless to create a new thread asking how to get started when you dont even have the device yet.
use it for at least a day or 2 before you start messing with custom ANYTHING
hell, dont even root it right away. just use it as is to get a feel for it, and verify there is nothing wrong with the hardware....if you just jump in and flash custom firmware, how will you ever know if an issue was hardware or firmware related?
Interesting, good point Pirateghost. I was wanting to put custom stuff on there while I had access to a computer this weekend. Might as well wait though. I'll have a laptop to mess with everything at my own pace by Black Friday anyway.
If it is still running GB, should I upgrade it to ICS, or would that hinder the root process when I want to do that?

The second part of your reply is absolutely spot on.
The first part i dont agree with a 100%.
I too plan to purchase the i777 model in the not too distant future, and its always a good thing to start reading early. Just like getting a feel of the stock rom/hardware is essential.. its always a good thing to read up well in advance. By the time a person is analyzing the h/w.. he is in a position to relate with other user's experiences.
I too was reading up all the stickies and really did got stuck up with the KK6 2.3.6 thing mentioned right at the start and no clue/legend being mentioned as to what it was. I googled a lot and many results had the same thing.. simply started using the terms w.o any hints.
It does gets confusing tbh you know
The thing is, I understand and know the stock hardware and firmware very well already. I have been using my girlfriend's GS2 from Sprint, the "Epic 4g Touch" since she got it in May. I've used it with GB and then ICS in August (I had to tell her to stop ignoring the notification, the update was a good thing!), but it will be good to evaluate the item to fully determine that everything is good with it.
It seems like in your first post, you steered yourself away from CM10, but everything you listed works except mhl I believe. And if you really want that, you will be able to dualboot into shostock once Siyah kernel gets updated.

What do you mean by favoring a carrier, I mean it is an at&t specific phone after all.

dont go throwin' just any s2 rom on yer phone there, buddy.
(at&t SGH-I777, sprint SPH-D710, tmobile SGH-T989, etc)
So CM10 is good for everything except mhl...what about stock ics from kies and rooting it after that. Is that simple to do?
I'm interested in project butter and all but even ics would be great as long as its not a CPU hog and laggy. I know it runs fine on the epic 4g touch.

Would it? I was looking at galaxys2root and the root method with the siyah (sp?) kernel is designed for 2.3.4 and messes up wifi on 2.3.6.

Also, breaking Wi-Fi is nothing. Flash a kernel to obtain cwm and you've got Wi-Fi back and you're ready to flash a ROM.

Rooted, Unlocked, running Beans 18 w/Faux Kernel. Recently my Note 2 has been turning off randomly and won't turn back on unless you pull the battery first. I haven't made any voltage changes and don't have any Verizon software installed. I have seen in other forums that people say it is a hardware issue. However, I never had any issues in the months of ownership until I started installing custom Roms. The Screen of Death (SOD) is becoming an issue across different phones so I am wondering what the common denominator could be. Something in Android? Can't be a hardware issue due to the variety of people using different phones, different roms. Suggestions? Done the factory reset, fix permissions, re-install Beans, different kernels...
I did have issues with Beans. My screen would lock up and require a battery pull. I have not had these problems with Clean ROM & MeanBean.
Have you tried another rom?

Which version of Faux were you running? V4 I believe had problems with lockups.

I've tried MeanBean but I am sort of a crack flasher so I didn't stay on it long enough to know. I always clean install everything to avoid problems. I'd really hate to think it could be the Beans. It's been very reliable. Then again...I never had this problem before either...

I am running V3. I believe that is the one that Bean's has an an option. But it happened using Pegasus too. There is no rhyme or reason either. It could just be sitting there and I go to use it and find it off. Which sucks for obvious reasons...

Have you tried reverting back to stock and seeing if it persists? And if does can you send it back through warranty?

Man..what a drag..but no, I haven't gone stock yet. I guess it makes sense to go ahead and go stock and maybe even un-root to see if it helps. I definitely can take it back with the BB extended warranty. What gets me is that as you start researching this random turn off issue, you start to see a pattern with more and more sites registering more and more complaints. I get the sneaking suspicion that Samsung knows something.. Possibly hardware issues with the Exynos chipsets. Pure conspiracy theory fodder naturally...Thank you for your suggestions...

It's not an issue with Beans. I've had beans on my phone since it was an S3. I've run every build from 3 on this up until now. As daily drivers. So don't imply Beans' ROM gives BSODs.
It's your kernel. The first thing you need to do before you do ANYTHING else is wipe dalvik/cache and flash a new kernel. Dirty flash the ROM again to get aroma. Pick anything other than what you did (faux) and see if you can reproduce. If you can't? There you go.
First step to troubleshooting.
P.S. faux released v5 and I haven't had one lockup. I got them hourly with v4.

Yeah..yesterday I flashed Faux v5. It was wonderfully smooth, but I did have one BSOD requiring a battery pull. As of this morning, I am going stock, rooted, unlocked to see what happens. I loved Beans and I don't mean to imply anything about the rom.

I went stock rom and stock kernel. I am really crossing my fingers hoping not to pick up my phone and find a black screen looking at me. I love being rooted and unlocked so worse case is I set the phone back and have it replaced. Thank God for the BB extended warranty at this point cause I don't have to deal with Verizon on the replacement. Samsung should come clean though...I feel like they are holding out on us about this.

I don't, I have seen a few incidents with this but not enough to call foul on Sammy's part. 9 times out of 10 it is the users fault for doing something they shouldn't, and most of these complaints you have found are from the same people with the same screenames on different websites.
There will always be a few phones with issues because nothing is perfect, just because you may have gotten a faulty phone doesn't mean Samsung is sending out defective products. If we were in the Nexus forums with all the **** that went down there I would agree but we aren't. Nothing is perfect.

Well...I went a whole day on stock without an issue. Not that that means anything, but that my note 2 may be finicky about custom roms. I have always done clean installs and don't mess with voltage on kernels. I am gonna try Beans again to see if I can figure out what I enabled that could've caused my black screen of death. The only thing that I can say for sure that I know was on was Bluetooth each time. Thank you all for your help. It is what makes XDA the go to site.
