I read in a lot of threads where people recommend wiping "cache and Dalvik-cache" to fix a variety of problems. I know apps have their own cache but does the Eris have a cache other than Dalvik? I'm using GSB 3.8 and I don't see another cache, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place.
Dalvik-cache files are split up into two different locations. The dex files for your system apps are in /cache/dalvik-cache and the dex files for your installed apps are in /data/dalvik-cache. The popular cache2cache script moves the files from data/dalvik-cache to the cache partition to provide more space on the data partition.
Besides dalvik-cache files, the /cache partition is also where market apps are temporarily downloaded before being installed.
Hope that helps.
OK, I use Zach's C2C script so clearing one dalvik location clears both and I was aware of the temp download location also. I guess I'm not missing anything, but I wanted to be sure. Thanks.
Im sorry if this is such a nooby question but on some custom roms it recommends to wipe /system. What does this do? And what do you lose? When I usually go to another rom I wipe user data, cache, dalvik cache and battery stats. I never had any problems by doing so. In my case I never saw where to wipe /system I found out it was under mounts and storage in recovery a few days ago.

This is wrong....
The /system partiton is where Android itself gets stored. As in the system apps and framework. It is recommened to wipe it when changing to a *non-wipe* firmware just in case some files are different and get left over from the previous rom.

As was posted earlier in the thread, wiping system basically wipes the rom/os and system settings. Your user data, apps, pictures will not be wiped. If you rebooted after wiping system the phone will not work, however you could wipe system then flash an update of the same rom and reboot and you should be fine(depending on the changes between rom versions). This is basically referred to as dirty flashing. FYI, most custom roms have a script which wipes system, cache and dalvik/art cache automatically preserving only /data(user apps and data)
Hi there,
the title says is pretty much:
Before Lollipop it was possible to move (the /system part, especially) the dalvik-cache to the cache partition via build.prop setting.
dalvik.vm.dexopt-data-only=0
This moved the system-dalvik to cache while the user-apps part was still at the /data partition. For me this does not seem to work in CM12(.1) anymore. Is the setting renamed?
I'm currently on android 5.1.1 euphorisOS. I installed kernel adiutor but after rebooting the phone, the dalvik cache was cleared (I dont know how) and the system started rebuilding it automatically.
The problem is that it built the dalvik cache (optimising apps) for only 135 apps but I have a total of 295 apps. So there's no dalvik cache for the rest of the apps and they are not generated anymore. Those apps which dont have the dalvik still run fine. But I guess without dalvik cache, its slower.
How do I generate the dalvik cache for the rest of the apps other than those 135? Any way to manually trigger dalvik cache building?
I have tried clearing the dalvik via twrp but the system again built dalvik for 135 apps only.
Hello
is it true that after a new system update you should wipe the cache partition?
Thanks

It is not necessary to wipe cache partition and dalvik cache but I recommend you to wipe those cause The updated system is not totally optimized and the consequences will be some freezing and lag when you open apps. So The best choice would be wiping cache and data partition. And let the phone like new. A backup is necessary when you wipe data.
