GPS Accuracy - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

My EVO LTE is having issues with the GPS accuracy. It is at least 2 miles off, thought I was in Canada but I'm near Rochester NY. I mapped a point that was only 1 mile from where I am and it gave me a 20 mile trip that passed my current position. It started the trip from a town over.
Any thoughts? I noticed it after the most recent Google Map update. After that update I'm also finding that my phone constantly crashes (3-4 times in the past 4 hours).

try the ##GPSCLRX# on your phone and is going to ask for the msl...the your phone is going to reboot and it should make your GPS work.....it work for me

Can get GPS to lock always..but in Portland, Not!

I have the Verizon 6800 and I have tested radio 3.42.30 & 40 found no difference for my device. Both radios locks under 2min sometimes less than 1min. I use BAF tool which does the work for me just click & walk away...soon it will lock.
My company headquarters is in Beaverton, OR but I am staying in downtown Portland. Since I landed from the airport and driving around downtown Portland all day...no locks at all...
Back home is Memphis, TN and I can get locks throughout the state and since I border Arkansas & Mississippi and get locks there as well when I move around the tri-state area....
My goodness....if I had not visited Portland/Beaverton before, I would be very disappointed if I was depending on this device for navigation here...

try and change gpsmode to =1.
i had the same issue in las vegas. once i changed to standalone mode (gpsmode=1) and restarted i got a lock - too bad it was the morning we left.
this was back in the dcd 2.x / radio 3.27 days but try it.
I heard that our mogul gps is lock to us region that won't work outside us and canada.

Since when has oregon left the union?
I had the GPS working in Southern Mexico just fine
I noticed I can only get GPS locks from a moving car. This helped me immensly on my recent trip to New Jersey. Try using HTC GPS tool and running the clear memory command. Also try using this app to obtain a lock first, then load your map software after it establishes a lock.
Good luck!
Whats pretty common with most standalone GPS's and I'm sure also pertain to our phones, don't rely on just the GPS to sync by itself. It usually helps if you open your navigation software and search for the area that you are in, then the GPS has some idea of where you are and can have a better idea of what satellites to look for. With WLS and GoogleMaps, I can never get a sync until I search for my town and then enable GPS mode, it will sync eventually, still takes several minutes at times, but will sync. If I leave it in SF or Atlanta it may take hours and multiple reattempts and still no sync.
Just my experience with it.

Unacceptable 4G Stability?

Using a Verizon / HTC Thunderbolt, final retail model.
Not even tethering, just holding the phone in my hand, I'm getting 4 bars of signal and a signal strength of -77 dBm.
Seems to work fine most of the time, with good downstream, well within acceptable limits of the "5 to 12 Mbps" advertised, though it's extremely variable (it tends to regularly oscillate between these speeds, occasionally dropping down to EvDO speeds).
But the speeds aren't important, just an indication of the good signal strength.
Maybe it's just my cell tower, but I am very frequently seeing no network activity at all; can't even get to google or check for software updates. It's about as unreliable as Verizon's crap DSL. This is the polar opposite of the rock-solid stability I used to get with EvDO in the exact same place (in my house). Is it the 4G network being unreliable, or the Thunderbolt? Anyone else have this problem?
Edit: In terms of the patterns of the total downtime, it seems to go down for periods of 5 to 10 minutes per hour. Sometimes the downtime only lasts 15 or 30 seconds, other times I am completely out for 10 minutes, even though it says "4G LTE" in the dock and I am still getting good signal strength. My data usage for the month is under 5GB but above 2GB. I tend not to make very bursty traffic; except for app downloads, most of my traffic is of the low throughput, consistent variety (loading webpages, listening to MP3 streams at 128Kbps, etc). I use it very often but the bandwidth usage at any given time is probably lower than the speed of an EvDO connection (unless you count webpages that are downloaded at faster-than-EvDO speeds for a split-second to load them). I'll be using it and then it's just *down*. I can still make phone calls during the outage.
I noticed the same thing. I was all over the place cycling through no data, 1x, 3G, and 4G in like a minute in the same spot. I rebooted and got a much more stable 4G connection.
I'm thinking your expectations are a little too much. There are many areas I don't get a good 3g, let alone a 4g signal. I live in a suburb of Chicago and am in 4g 95% of the time, I don't always pay attention, because, after all, it's a phone first, but 4g seems to be there whenever I need it.
Also, in regards to unacceptable, what are you comparing it to? Is there more acceptable 4g signals in your area?

I'm comparing it to Verizon EvDO / 3G. While speeds on EvDO were only about 20-25% of the max speed of LTE / 4G, it was completely reliable -- at least in my area.
Keeping the phone almost completely stationary sitting at my desk, connected to the same cell tower, and with my roaming data programmed to the latest version, my EvDO phone (a Droid 2) would have the connection available whenever I asked for it.
With the same exact usage pattern but with LTE, my Thunderbolt often has no connection, and it spontaneously comes back by simply waiting around for it to become available.
I expect the 4G channel to be "open" 24/7/365, not ever completely down -- especially while stationary in a standard building with a very high signal strength (always 4 bars). I have no unusual EMF like microwaves or bluetooth going on, just a laptop and a desktop and 2 LCDs. Wooden house, and I'm on the top floor.
If they can make EvDO stable 24/7, and EvDO is based on the same CDMA technology as LTE, why can't they make LTE stable 24/7 also? And I also don't understand why my phone does not fall back to EvDO if and when the LTE drops out. I recall a few times over the years of using it that my EvDO would fall back to 1x/RTT in the event of an EvDO downtime. But the MTBF of EvDO downtimes in my area was around 1 year. Now, the MTBF of LTE is about 50 to 120 minutes.

I rebooted my phone and am getting a more stable 4G connection now, too I wonder if the phone itself has a stability problem with its 4G transceiver after a certain period of uptime? I will test this theory over the next couple days by rebooting my phone whenever I have a problem, and see if it helps.
Edit: I usually keep my phone "up" 24/7, and just leave it on the charger when I'm not on the go. I power it off only rarely, because I want to receive phone calls and text messages. When I just rebooted it, it had 2.5 days of uptime (hard to have too much uptime considering launch day was just a few days ago!)

Out of curiosity, what suburb are you in that you're getting 4G 95% of the time? I live in Highland Park (about 20 miles up the north shore) and I don't have nearly as good of coverage (still decent though and I'm not complaining).

I'm guessing it has to be your area. I am getting amazing 4G coverage in LA. I going to assume its going to take VZW some time before their 4G coverage truly blankets areas. I remember when 3G came out.. it was totally spotty for a long time until they had enough towers.
Kind of like what I recorded on my phone this afternoon....?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRTOCFoGFmU
5 min clip showing me cycling through web and map but getting no data, despite cycling airplane mode on and off. This has happened almost daily since getting the phone last Thursday, in multiple locations that are supposedly full 4G areas. Pretty annoying.
Double annoying since I got the Verizon phone because they're network's so much better (allegedly)...and yet my Nexus S on T-Mobile had full bars and fast "4G" data in the same location. I'd also had a reboot, and the 1tx symbols flashing but wasn't recording at the time. I'd been screwing around with this for at least 10 minutes before activating ShootMe to record it.

Well im in Gurnee area with 4g 99% of the time. Only time without is in my GF's brothers house. no 3g there either though lol. otherwise i never loose 4g. Even driving to vernon hills and around i always have 4g. not sure y in HP u dont always have it.
i am complete opposite i have 2-1 bars inside a building getting 12mbps
I notice it has an issue where it just randomly drops all my signals to search for 4g even though its not in my area... I think the only way to get reliable signal would be to set the radio to whatever you are using mostly... *#*#4636#*#* will get you into diagnostics and select phone infotmation and then choose CDMA auto for 3g or lte mode..... I'm thinking in the near future there will be a update that allows for easier lte turn off like 4g on the evo... the automatic thing is nice but it wastes battery and seems to cause some problem

You realize that the phone is incapable of 50 up, don't you? Those kinds of speeds are a known bug in the Speedtest.net and other similar speed tests that don't deal with the Thunderbolt's large transmit buffer properly.
Anyone else seeing any errors in the logcat that look similar to this?

Is Verizon having 4g/3g Data Issues or Something?

I have no clue what the issue is, but the past two/three days, my 4g has been going in and out. As a matter of fact, as I sit here... I'm on 1x with 4 bars behind it, full battery life, on Pennsylvania Ave in Washington DC.
Anyone else having 4g issues?
same here. even if i have two bars on 4g all of sudden my data connection drops then goes to 3g and a second later switches back to 4g. its annoying as hell when im tryin tether or download something from the market.
I am having problems again since last night. Had almost two days of good 4G signal. Now I can barely get 3G.
Called VZW they said there has been a trouble ticket for Thunderbolt data since yesterday and hope to have it resolved today.
I think they're tweaking it or something. I'm changing in between every 30 seconds. That in itself drains the battery a buttload.
Something is rotten in Denmark with this new network. I can force 3G only but if I leave the thing set to CDMA/LTE, it can't figure out which it wants. Which is pretty much killing all data. Luckily, wifi is an option. I hope they get this new network figured out soon. More LTE devices are slated to drop soon (bet there will be delays).
I was constantly in a state of 1x today. My battery was eaten up it a mere 5 hours... gulp
hell im on verizons 4g map at home here and havent been able to get 4g at all.Ive had the phone for two weeks now and have called verizon about this,,they tried pushing some data info to my phone to no avail,,so i guess im on record now according to the rep and she did admit that this is a work in progress...yes thank god for wifi.

Mine has been flakier than usual today and this week. I'm on K and 1st NE. But I also never get more than 2 bars here in the office.
If i were you i'd call verizon tech support and ask them if where you are is currently under 4g. I've had the same issue and my address on the coverage map shows that i have 4g but it kept going in and out. Called VZW and they have a different coverage map that they see and he said where i was located i was 1 mile away from the coverage area so thats why it kept switching. Just my luck huh lol

LTE Rollout Houston Coninues

FYI
I live on the east side of downtown Houston. When the LTE launch came and went, I had no LTE in my house. I thought for sure being this close to downtown I would have it on the launch date. The weekend after the launch I attended a Houston Dynamo game at BBVA stadium and was pleased to pick up a LTE signal. The stadium is about a mile from my house.
Last week I started receiving a strong LTE signal at my house. Usually somewhere around 15 down and 15 up for speeds, with max around 22 down and 18 up.
Anyways, if you are in Houston or another launch area and have yet to pick up consistent LTE, I wanted to pass this along. Maybe this gives you hope or helps you to channel your patience.
PS - Running Mikey's latest MeanRom
I wished I lived as close to town as you. I live a lot further out east and I can only get a 4G signal on I-10 going home and of course at the Sprint Store at Freeman and I-10.
I took my phone it to see if maybe there was a problem and it was working great! I'd love to see the speeds you are. Maybe this year hopefully.
Lets all hope they continue their LTE rollout in Houston. I experience horrible service in the Northwest side of houston

Came across LTE at work in Greenspoint Thursday. Even got it inside work for a couple seconds.
Well for me I can pick up a signal quite often but literally for about 10 secs. Then its gone. I gave up on actually trying to download something and use the LTE, instead I try and open up speed test to see what kind of speed there are but the signal never holds to finish the test. I guess it can only get better from here.

I guess there is hope for just receiving the signal. Ive been several place from constellation field in sugarland to 59 and Beechnut as well as near Reliant Park. I always receive a signal but the speeds are similar to wimax

Sprint's Voice and Data outages

Has anyone been having issues with Sprint's overall Network?...
For the past 5 days i have been experiencing MAJOR issues with "NOW" network! ????
Called twice to Sprint and all they have to tell me is they're either "updating" their towers or I'm using my data during "peek" hours!!! But then, i go online and Google "Sprint's outages map" and come to find out, Long Beach CA has been affected with outages along with other cities in the US since the 23rd of August! You would figure that Sprint customer service would be just a lil more helpful than lie to customers. Guess not!...
What about the rest of you guys?
Visting family here in Greenfield Wisconsin.... lte down last night and tonight only 3g... seems to only be late at night though.

Both my wife and I have been getting stuck in 3G a LOT lately in the North Atlanta, GA area... Although my Note 3 doesn't hold LTE as well as it should after the KitKat upgrade, cycling mobile data off and back on usually fixes it. But for the last week or so, sometimes I can't get LTE back no matter what. And then it just comes back when I quit paying attention to it. But I'll be happy if they're actually trying to improve things, like they've been saying for the last how many years?
This happened when they did the network vision upgrade in my area. Took about 2 or 3 months for it to stabilize. We'll worth it now honestly
Sent from my SM-G900P using Tapatalk
They will not report an "outage" if its network vision related or its being upgraded.
Many times if they are adding extra nodes or adding more bandwidth you will lose everything for a few hours, or you will notice your connection constantly dropping and reconnecting ( or at a lower signal) because you are trying to connect to a different tower since the one closest to you is offline being worked on.
The problem is.. everyone else is trying to also connect to that other tower, which overloads it- so people get kicked off or get the lovely 0.02kbps speedtest results.
You will only see an "outage" reported ( that shows up on the web) when either something major happens like a tornado/hurricaine/storm that caused damage, or if some idiot from another utility company accidentally cuts the fiber that goes from the tower to the switch
And in direct correlation to the adding capacity theory, I noticed Llama was not always showing me at home anymore (Llama uses cell towers to perform actions based on location). Did a re-learn area, and two new cells popped up... The sprint upgrade map shows a LOT of "data speed upgrades" in my area, including the tower closest to my house.

I'm down in Orange County, CA and I have had no issues.
Having the same issues here in CT. I brought my phone in for a repair and the rep said nothing was wrong with my phone. But the towers I was on. The tech on the phone it was hard to believe, I was having issues because, I used over 27gb in the past month. I said yeah, I used about a gig a day streaming .... But, the data is spotty at most, where my streams gets grainy during playback. And before I was getting 8-14 mbs down. Now, I get 3mbs-240kbs down then internet connection failed and this is on 4g.

I had this issue here in FL. I called sprint and I was told they are upgrading the towers around the area(past 3 days) now everything seems to be fine. At least, they credited me $15 on my current bill.
