[Q] easy thanks ITT - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, I haven't slept in like 20 hours so I can't think straight and instead of my phone working it decided to.. long story short i'm flashing a new ROM/Kernel. okay now, i'm being stupid but, if the ROM is an ICS 4.03 (i'm thinking sensation3.5) then can I still flash a kernel based on 4.04 (ie speedmodK31/phenomenal6.1)?
be as sarcastic and mocking as you want but in the replies but answer my question
thankssssss
edit: 100 posts hell yea breakin' barriers baby

No you must flash exactly the kernel that is for the rom.
Do not flash kernel that is meant for ICS 4.0.4 on a ICS 4.0.3

[Q] Possible to use Villian rom with XXKI1?

Hi all,
I want to flash the VillianRom, but I'm not sure if I'm able to use it. I'm using this stock firmware:
PDA:CEKI2
PHONE: XXKI1
Android 2.3.4
XEN (Netherlands)
I think I've to use the VillianRom 2.5, with the 2.3.4 base. It states XXKI4 though, so my question is if I can use it with my XXKI1?
Cheers
Yes you can, the firmware your phone comes with doesnt effect the rom, the version number listed for Villian rom just means which stock rom its based on, in this case VR2.5 is using 2.3.4 KI4.
You can flash VR3 which is 2.3.5 KI3 (yes samsung have stupid version numbers).
Dont worry about what you are starting with, but you will want to wipe data/cache so make sure to backup anything you dont want to lose first.
Thanks for the explantion! Didn't see any real requirement notifications in the villian rom thread, so thought better to ask first Nice to know it doesn't matter!

Thanks! I take it that it doesn't matter then which modem you use? As in no country restrictions? As the KI1 came with the Dutch stock firmware for me

Hi,
I'm new on these forums so apologies in advance if I get things wrong.
I received my Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 on 2.3.4 with XXKI1 from Vodafone on Saturday, I have been getting used to using it after I switched from a *spit* iPhone 4.
Life story over, what I wanted to say was;
Since this is my first time using Android, I wanted to root my device and I was wondering what would be the best ROM to use, I was looking around on the forums and Villain ROM seems to be pretty good, so what file would I need to download? I have ODIN on my downloaded at the moment. And also and when Matriak31 said "You can use KI1 or KI3" what does this exactly mean? Because he then goes on to talk about the Wifi signal being stronger and I notice that my wifi has been pretty weak compared to my old phone.
Thank you very much

Hi Buneetg, ki1 ki3 are two of the available modems (=baseband) you can try.
To root your phone you can start by checking the link at post #8.
Then you can get the link to download VillainRom here (post #3).
But, seriously, if you don't know what file you have to download you probably should have a look first around the many guides and whatnot that have been posted here about root, roms, kernels, etc. imo.good luck.
Thank you I appreciate the help

[Q] phone has crashed after rooting XXLPH

got new s2 a few days ago which came ics 4.0.3 installed. noticed a few glitches so wanted to update to 4.04 (XXLPH) ive done this before on my previous phone so felt quite confident. it went thru the process and odin indicated i had succeeded. it was then that the phone wouldnt go any further than the spash screen (with the yellow exclamation mark). the screen then just goes blank. i can get into CWM mode and download mode.
can anyone give me any pointers please? really stuck here.
thanks
Your thread title and post content don't match. Did it happen after rooting or flashing LPH? After re-reading your post I would assume you have a non-stock kernel on there since you have the yellow exclamation mark. To get it to boot again, just flash your stock kernel, one of the newer CF-root kernels (I know this might seem odd, but it's worth a try), or one of the custom ICS kernels.
Why did you choose LPH anyway when there are newer? My suggestion would be to try a newer one.
Also, LPH is 4.0.3. Not 4.0.4.
One more thing; check your model number on the label under the battery. You're only got 1 post, and your profile is blank, so it's impossible to tell if you are maybe in the wrong device forum.
sorry for the confusion
sorry my terminologies arent spot on - i followed the instructions on a page on the android soul forum (sorry XDA wont let me post the link) which roots the phone and flashes the update at the same time.
i am definitely on an S2 (GTI9100).
should i just go back to odin now and install a new build? any recommendations for 4.0.4.
thanks again for your help.

There are no odin packages for 4.0.4. Samsung hasn't released a 4.0.4 package yet. They are currently up to DXLP9, which is still 4.0.3.

Have to be sure... because there are over a dozen different model numbers for what Samsung markets as "Galaxy SII". GT-I9100 is just one of them.

again, apologies for the confusion. my phone is rooted using cf root. and its released by chainfire. i cant show u the link as its from another forum and xda wont let me post it. heres the opening paragraph which will hopefullly explain things better than i can.
It seems Chainfire never sleeps. No sooner than a new Samsung firmware comes out, he comes up with a new CF-Root kernel update for that firmware, pre-rooted and with clockworkmod recovery (CWM) installed. Well, he did it again. CF-Root is out for XXLPH, the latest Ice Cream Sandwich firmware leak for the Galaxy S2 i9100. And of course, we’ve got a guide right here to help you flash it and get root access.
now ive just put dxlp9 on my sd card - gone into cwm mode and installed it successfully. unfortunately the phone still goes off after showing the splash screen.
can anyone please in simple terms point me towards an update and whether i need to use odin or use zio from sd card in cwm.
thanks

i cant helpthinking that this has happended because i have overwritted the official ROM with an unofficial one - i never had these problems at all when i upgraged to ics on my previous phone.

Yes, just flash stock rom via Odin.
You can go back and forth to and from any rom you wish aslong as its for your device. Which means dont just flash any old **** to your device, read, learn enjoy.
Learn using some stickies
Wipe using cwm
Flash using Odin, but In my opinion flash lpd instead of old lpg

Yes, as long as you read the instructions of installing CM9. People get problems after installation usually due to not properly installing.
Also it would be best to be patient for replies, instead of posting for an answer just 30 minutes later. Plenty of people wait for replies hours to days later.

Poor Wifi Signal can be caused by Wrong Kernels. You might need to try a different kernel. A small brief on available kernels..
1. CM10 Kernel - Amazing Battery, Moderate Performance
2. Siyah Kernel - Amazing Performance, Poor Battery
3. Dream Kernel
4. Dorimanx Kernel
Choose a Kernel that suits your need and try to flash it via CWM.

First things first - Upgrade your phone to latest firmware using the official way: OTA or Samsung Kies application.
Next go through the infinite posts about rooting - pros and cons; and decide why you want to root. One wrong step and you may end up losing your phone forever.

Do one thing..If you are not able to find the relevant thread directly in the forum use Google. Just type "how to Root galaxy S2+gingerbread 2.3.3" and you would most probably be directed to some thread in XDA itself.
Besides, dont worry, just follow the instructions word to word and you should be fine. Personal experience.

Can't i just root and then install custom ICS OS??

I am in confusion now.
Kernal is a part of ROM right?
If i upgrade to ICS then i will have ICS kernal right?
Can you elaborate point 1?
My mobile current state is having GB...(i can upgrade it to ICS from service centre)
Steps which i think i should be doing
Method 1:
1)Upgrade it to ICS and root the mobile.
Once i get admin rights replace the kernal " siyah"
2)Take backup of current ROM
3)Install custom ROMS
method 2:
1)with current OS GB root the mobile
2)Replace the kernal
3)Backup OS
4)Install custom ROMS
Tell me steps are correct or Provide me the changes and the method which i should go for.
It's simple, root your current firmware by using the siyah GB version. After rooting, install titanium backup and backup every application. Before the titanium backup, install sms backup +, open it and click the backup button. It will now backup all your sms and your call log. You contacts should be synced with google. Now just download the ICS firmware to flash using odin. Flash it. Flash siyah through odin (ICS version). Now install titanium backup and sms backup +. Restore everything. Now you have ICS stock.
Whenever you flash the siyah kernel your phone will be rooted. Be careful not to use siyah GB with ICS and siyah ICS version with GB. They may brick your phone.
We are rooting your gingerbread so that you can backup all your apps using titanium backup which requires root.
That's pretty much it, enjoy your new phone.

If you want to backup your entire current firmware, after rooting your gingerbread firmware, switch off the phone and press volume up + home + power button at the same time and keep holding them. They'll bring up a recovery screen (this is where you install roms backup entire roms/firmwares etc) go to backup and restore and backup.
Feel free to ask any questions.

Best Rom doesn't actually exist. The thing is, everybody has different things they like in different roms. So I can't help you there.
Btw, I told you to get ICS using odin first so that you have a original firmware file of ICS available with you if you need it later. It's the longer procedure but It's good this way.

I didn't describe the odin flashing methods. I'm assuming you've done some research on using odin. If you haven't, don't worry, just ask me and I'll help. Just make sure you've installed kies on your pc/laptop

First of all thanks for helping this newBee...
1)I m scared of bricking my cell. So i dnt want to take single chance of doing so.
2)I can just upgrade to ICS free of cost from samsung sevice centre.
3)I am not getting a single reason to root the mobile at the cost of ICS..
It would have been the case of installing JB then i would have thought of.
Taking the backup of current GB doesnt make scence ....
What if my cell bricks may i use the backup of GB?
All the advices are welcome.
Thanks in advance..
Watever you do, don't upgrade to ICS v4.0.4. You can hard brick your device. 4.0.3 is fine. Very fine!

Why don't you just update over-the-air? (I should have said this before the long post ) If you just want just ICS without root then go to settings, about phone, software update and update from there. 100% safe and you won't lose anything, all your apps and eveything will remain as it was.
After that IF someday you wish to root the phone for some AWESOME reason. Just flash Siyah Kernel. (ICS Version).
thanks
