Phones randomly switches off on Jelly Beam - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello All!
I am running the latest CM10 Jelly Bean ROM ( 8/21 nightly) and really like it for the most part - seems to be smooth, no major issues (well, keep reading), installed easily enough etc. I am pretty experienced with Android and flashing, etc.
I've had a problem that started with the ROM..my phone shuts off completely when it's charging and reaches a full charge. It's happened a couple of times. And yes, it IS charging, it's not the battery running low. lol. I reflash an ICS ROM and the problem goes away.
Any ideas?

What kernel are you running? Is it the stock kernel or did you flash devil kernel? If you flashed devil, did you modify any of the settings with the devil control app? If you did not install devil and are running with their default kernel, have you changed the settings at all? Have you UVed at all? OCed?
Also, is it really turned off completely? Like, the whole green battery charging symbol...or is it a SOD? If it's a SOD, it could likely be a kernel thing, which is why I asked all those kernel related questions ^^...although in hindsight, I should have probably asked this first, and then moved to asking about the kernel lol

Hello Xenoism!
Thank you so much for the reply. And shame on me for not giving you all of the information! I should know better! LOL.
So to answer your second question first, it turned off completely. When I press the power button, it switches on, boots up and shows a fully charged battery.
I've also noticed that the CHARGE indicator is not working...it does not show when my phone is charging (the icon in the notification bar).
I AM using the Devil kernel (1.2.1 I believe it is) as is, without any modifications except I OC to 1.3 or 1.4GHz. I've made no changes to the Voltages.
I suppose if I just reflash without DEVIL I can see if the problem continues. That really should have been my first step, right?
Again, thank you!!!

No problem at all, just trying to help ^^;
Trying out the stock kernel might be best, since from my experience things like this tend to be the result of some kernel related issue. If you're certain its not a sleep of death (which can be easily mistaken as the device being off, since the phone will appear off and you will need to hold the power button in order for the phone to reboot), and you haven't undervolted at all, then the answer becomes a tad more tricky. Off the top of my head, I might suggest downloading "Cpu Spy" from the market for free, and checking to see while charging what frequency your phone likes to stick around at....if for some reason the phone is staying higher than 100, it may be simply the result of it overheating overnight while charging which causes it to turn off. ^^

Make sure you do not have deep idle selected! I had the same issue. I also have an issue with charging icon (not status bar though). When phone is off and charging the battery icon doesn't turn green and show charge level, however it is charging. It doesn't effect performance at all so no worries.
Running helly 0817 with latest devil kernel.
Its peanut butter jelly(bean) time...

It is possible that because of your high overclocking, when the battery becomes high, the phone's voltage gets messed up our something and your phone shuts off.

Thank you for the great reply and usefull information. I actually left my phone at my sister's the other day and she lives in another city, lol, and am using a temporary replacement so I haven't had a chance to investigate further. But once I get the phone back I'll look into the Cpu Spy and also using the default kernel.
Again, thank you!

problem Phone turning off when charging, URGENT

Hi guys,
I seem to have a problem with my X10i, it randomly turns off by it self, below are the times in which ive noticed this:
Phone is charging and i am texting at the same time or talking for like 5 mins and then turns off
phone charging and it gets too hot and it turns off
phone turns off when hot generally,
i play a racing game for 20 mins and it turns off.
When it turns off it tries to reboot, it boot it s then turns off again, i have to take the battery appart, wait for 10 mins plug it back in and turn it on.
This gets annoying as it shouldn't really do this and its not as if i put my phone on top of the radiator in order for it to get hot.
Please help
Ps. it did this on android 1.6 and 2.1 so that didnt fix it.
Regards
Well, this is definitely a hardware problem... you should return it to warranty or try and get it robbed to activate insurance if you have one... lol

Hey,
Thanks for the reply, i have also noticed that when the phone turns off it make a small clicking noise.
Thanks for the suggestions but im in greece and i have no insurance cover and the phone was given as a gift so i don't know what is up with the warranty.
Totally a Hardware problem... Just take it to the nearest SE Repair. It'll cost you though.. :\ They Charge really high if u dnt have wwarranty.
Any ideas on which hardware could be causing this? do you reckon it could be just the battery getting too hot? or something else?
You will still have warranty even if it's gifted (through imei )

Oh nice i hope that is the case, i 'm not sure if its been a year though, how long does the warranty cover?
One year. Warranty is for one year and two years on special contract basis if i'm not wrong.
If your phone keeps restarting, (Heating) another issue could be wrong (or high) OC settings (like setcpu to high values) or something. Which fw are you running atm?
Try reflashing to Stock and see if the same thing happens?
I had the similar issue , I flashed it to Wolfs 2.2 switched off the mobile, Removed battery and let it cool down. After sometime it fixed the issue by itself

Hey,
Thanks for your reply, i do not know what oc speed i have or how to overclock, as for my version i have the stock 2.1 android rom and build 2.1.A.0.435
I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FLASH, i have seen tutorials but everytime i set my phone to usb debugging mode it over heats and turns off
Have nearly same problems. Looks like you have fuel gauge ic problems, max17040, to be exact. Or Qualcomm PM7540 power distribution ic, which is much worthier. Does your battery level changes sometimes after that glitches, and returns to normal after battery re-installation?

yes that does happened sometimes, the battery is on red and the phone crashes, but then when i take the battery out and plug it back in after 10 mins i get a white bar in the battery so in theory it has more battery than when it crashed.

[Q] Orange light always on, killing my battery? FRX06 - Now FRX07

I have read a few people having the same issue but no solution. my light on my tilt 2 constantly stays lit orange. It dies overnight too i tried to set the alarm and overslept so that us why im looking for a solution. Thank in advance, again i never found a solution just others with the same issue so i apologize if this has already been solved.
P.s. gps is off and app killer is killing all apps that autostart.

Don't use any 'app killers'... It's probably constantly just killing apps that are relaunching, then killing that app that relaunched, then the app re-relaunches... You get the idea.
Also, FRX06 is no longer supported. Shouldn't have anything to do with the phone not sleeping, but if you want to pursue this further I'd like you to be on the newest build. Thanks.
I was under the assumption that froyo is the most stable build and that the latest doesn't support gps. If i misread will add the latest tonight.
How do i stop it from launching apps i dont want then? i have no need for news to keep popping up like it does, we have the same issue on my gfs android phone all this stuff she doesnt want loading always loads up.

When he says FRX06 is old, that's because FRX07 is out, not because of Gingerbread, start over from scratch with FRX07, disable GPS, verify it sleeps properly (green light), then install apps slowly and make sure it sleeps after you install one, once it stop sleeping remove the last app you installed. Voila.
Thank you for clarifying that. I put FRx07 on just now shut off gps/wifi and the orange light by my ear speaker comtinues to stay lit, no apps are opening aside from "stock" apps those that were included with the os

well so you wont over sleep..keep the phone plugged in all night then you will hear your alarm...dont worry nothing will happen to your phone. i have done this many times...as for the orange light,i had this happen to me on frx06 but not on frx07..

Make sure BlueTooth is off in WinMo before launching XDAndroid. That was keeping my phone from sleeping initially.
Lol I learned my lesson that night, i still use winmo until I get this figured out. I love the ability to put this on my phone just hope I can figure out whats causing it. The battery drains to fast to consider using it full time for now though.
Thanks for the suggestion on the bt, It is off when switching over.
BTW I am on FRX 07 now as requested
Thanks in advance for any assistance

The only things to my knowledge that kill sleep (now) are:
BT being on in WinMo (put WinMo in airplane mode, soft reset and let WinMo boot back up in airplane mode, then hit HaRET.exe...)
GPS being enabled (disable thru Settings -> Location & Security) - this is an issue even when the GPS icon is not in the notification bar. Just trying GPS and having it enabled will cause sleep problems.
Stupid apps not working correctly. Not sure what we can really do about those long-term, but sometimes apps do not give up wakelocks correctly and prevent the phone from sleeping. I actually got the WeatherBug Pro app for free from the Amazon store one day, and used it for a little while... then realized it was killing sleep on my device and promptly removed it.
If there's anything else killing sleep, let me know - I'm not aware of anything else that could kill sleep assuming you're on FRX07.
Lots of stupid apps. Facebook, anything that does background autosync (like gmail, gcalendar, etc. - I turn off all the autosync options whenever I see them.)

I too had major battery drain issues and it really seems to be down to certain components. I have a RHOD100 running FRX07
In particular, I tried rootfs 20110721 last night with a full battery at about 21:00 and i'd swear it would have been dead by 02:00. So I have gone back to rootfs-20110716-245f68a. I am using this with kernel 20110718_223029-package. My battery was 100% at 08:15 this morning so three hours later, it's now at 80% so I'm very happy with this.

Ok now im curious if I may have "misrepresented" the issue. So here goes..
The orange light that while in WINMO that indicates the phone is charging. That light is constantly on while I am using android. After having upgraded to the FRX07 I clicked the lock button and the light went green but again stayed lit. I guess the major issue here (to me) is that these lights are not shutting off at all. in winmo if I unplug the phone the orange light goes off, the green light stays lit only temporarily. Is this an issue that is common?
I still notice a faster drain on the battery then one might expect thought I dont know how to quantify it as I dont know how to tell what % the battery is at only have the graphic up in the menu bar.
Regarding the Kernels and all in the above post you have lost me, I dont know what is meant by running something under a different Kernel, are you saying you reverted back to FRX06 and the battery issue is fixed?

I don't see any issue here at all, whatsoever. Simply a misunderstanding on your part, probably because you haven't taken the time to read and research how this port works.
Orange = wake
Green = sleep
The LED should always be on while in Android, representing the above conditions. It's really that simple. When the phone is plugged in / charging in Android, it cannot sleep - so the orange LED will be on, representing the device is awake.
I'm not talking about when the phone is plugged in, that is expected as you say, but when I have it unplugged and am using it the light continues to stay on.
just like the other thread of mine you commented in (video playback) for what you feel is not appropriately educating myself before asking the question I did read up on this issue before asking same result no concrete answer. If I overlooked it due to either to broad of a search or to narrow then I apologize. I am not trying to offend anyone here but I feel like your being a bit harsh towards me for not knowing all the answers to the questions i am asking.
I apologize again as I may be misreading you or this is just how you come off but your posts have had somewhat of a negative tone at least to me when I read them ever since I asked a question in the rhobuntu thread.

The light is always on in Android. Green light always on means it's sleeping properly. Don't compare it to WM, it is not programmed to operate the same way at the present time.

The only reason I'm being harsh is you're not getting something very simple.
LED is always on in Android. Always always always.
Orange = wake
Green = sleep
The LED will never be off in Android, and these are the only things that the LED currently represents in Android - sleep state. Nothing more, nothing less. As was stated above, don't compare the LED to WinMo - it's not even close to how that is programmed at this stage of the game.
If the light stay's orange, then that's Bad and means that the phone is not sleeping and so is likely to be the cause of the battery drain.
Can I suggest that you download "Battery Indicator" from the Market. It gives you a number in the top bar so easy to read the battery level at any time.
On your microSD Card, you will see three files - rootfs.img and the kernel files zImage and module.... try downloading and replacing these with updated versions. Rename the rootfs and zImage files but do NOT rename the module file. You can see the links in my earlier post.

Does your wifi work? I have the same problem and it seems it appeared along with a wifi problem on my frx7.
With a fresh install everything worked fine. after a couple of days (without modifying system) wifi was broken (gives an error if I try to turn it on) and the phone didn't sleep.

[Q] [ICS Passion] Deep Sleep: Kernel dependent?

or do I just suck?
I've been flashing NBs ICS roms since the initial release and have been nothing but impressed at the development and overall quality; however, there's one thing that seems amiss. Generally, it seems that whenever the option to OC exists (which I assume is due to the kernel but I have the foggiest on how these things work), my phone refuses to go into deep sleep. I've always written this off as something wonky with the specific build and whatever crap I install afterwards. After all, it's still in the beta.
After flashing Beta v10 -which does not have OC by default- my phone had no problem going into deep sleep after all my apps were restored. After spending the day enjoying my ICS goodness, I decided to flash the new custom kernel mostly because I'm a sheep and will do whatever the rom dev tells me to do.
My phone now won't drop below 100Mhz; this is with the kernel change being the ONLY difference. I assume that this must be culprit. Excuse the short monitor time on my screenshot, it was taken after a "trouble-shooting" reboot.
I use the included 'CPUMaster' app to set the clock settings and I've run the diagnosis app but don't understand anything it displays.
Has anyone else experienced this and what should my next troubleshooting step be?
NB set the Rom to not go into Deep sleep while being charged.
So, after charging your phone, and unplugging, you need to reboot your phone
before it will be able to go into deep sleep.
Hopefully this helps.
Deep sleep problems for me too, rebooting doesn't always solve
I got the same issue as the above guy. I'm on 10.6 with eugene373's streamline kernel. The rom is awesome, but this issue is a pain on my battery. I notice at least once a day my battery starts dropping rapidly. I check cpuspy and sure enough i'm stuck at 100 mhz. Rebooting only solves the problem about half the time and even when it does after a few hours sometimes i get stuck at 100 mhz again. This happens later in the day as well, after unplugging from charger and a reboot or two. What is going on? Any suggestions as to how to find the culprit would be much appreciated.

I tried this and deep sleep still wasn't available.
Use BetterBatteryStats to track down what is preventing deep sleep. I ended up turning off background updates for everything except gmail to get reliable deep sleep. Turning on GPS also caused problems. Can't use GPS right now anyway, since flashing Kiss 4.1 kernal. I'd rather have 911 than GPS.

Phone getting extremely hot while using and turns off

Hi guys,
My Atrix 4G is acting weird for the past 2 days. I was running Nov 25 CM7 nightly with faux 1GHZ kernel when the issue first occurred. The phone got too hot suddenly, it shot up from 32C to 58C in a few seconds and the charge started decreasing from 38% to 15% in 2 to 3 seconds. Before I could realize what happened, the phone turned off. I plugged in my charger after letting it to chill, and the phone started charging.
After sometime, I saw that the phone had charged till 25%. So I booted into CM7. Within no time, the phone got extremely hot and turned off again. It did not start charging till it came to normal temperature.
I somehow managed to flash the stock CM7 kernel, assuming that the issue was with the Faux kernel. After that, the phone was operating at normal temperature for a couple of hours. I thought that the Faux kernel was the culprit and thought that my issue is resolved. But after a couple of hours, I again felt the phone getting too hot in my pocket and before I could react, it turned off.
Please help me. Is the battery dead and needs a replacement? Or is it with the ROM? I've been running CM7 with stock/Faux kernel for many months and never faced such an issue.
Note: The issue started happening some time after I installed two apps. One is the Koi Live Wallpaper and one is the Xperia S launcher. Now both are uninstalled but the issue still persists.
Thanks in advance for your help.
It does sound similar to how a PC would react to an overheating CPU/GPU. In that case, you want it to shut off before permanent damage. Heat does not play well with electronics.
See if you can go under Performance Settings and set it to "powersave" and lower the clock speed to the next lowest setting (912 or 800). If it continues, try to backup everything and do a clean install. If the problem persists, it's not related to software.
Are you having the same issue in recovery? It might prove to be a challenge if it does.
Other suggestions: Remove any case you have on there along with the backing to get more air flow. Try to use it in a cold area, or in front of a fan or something. People have tried linking busted display digitizers with excess heat, might want to be careful.

I have that problem but with ICS/JB roms, the phones gets hot because my cpu is stucked at 750 MHz for some reason i don't know
Normally i don't have those problems with cm7, but when i had it i solve it by just installing another faux kernel. right now i'm running v023 at 1Ghz and it's working properly.
Maybe you can try to fix the permissions under CMW, sometimes that correct some problems
Try CPU spy and see if your phone is running at high clock speed all the time.

Thanks guys for the ideas.
The issue doesn't seem to be related to the ROM or kernel. It is with the hardware, because the phone is heating up even while it is switched off. The battery needs to be removed and after it is cooled, the phone works normally for some hours before it starts heating up again.
If it is getting heated up even while switched off, the issue has to be with the battery or the phone's circuit. Not sure which one is affected and I dont have a replacement battery to test.
Any ideas?

Are you saying it's overheating while completely powered down or just when screen is off? Is it still under warranty?

It's overheating when the phone itself is off. It's weird. Looks like the battery is leaking charge. And it is not under warranty

[Q] Phone keeps turning off

I've had my phone for a few months now and up until recently it had no issues. It's unlocked but not s-off and I had been running cyanogenmod 10.1. When the 10.2 nightlies came out I began using them and until around 9/15 these worked great. I didn't suffer from the flickering or radio issues at all. Around that time I started noticing that my phone would occasionally shut off on its own. I thought that it was an overheating issue at first but as the problem worsened it became clear that it would happen cold. It's now at the point where it predictably happens within a minute of the phone being on, leaving the phone essentially useless. I've tried narrowing the CPU frequency range and going back to the stock ROM, neither of which has resolved the problem. Investigating logcat and bugreport didn't reveal any hints to me as to what was happening. I'm worried that it's a hardware issue but recovery and bootloader seem to be able to stay on indefinitely which gives me some hope. Does anybody have some input on additional things that I could try?
Start simple... Battery good? Battery contacts good?

Yeah, I'm fairly sure that it's not a battery issue. The same thing happens when it's plugged into a charger and the phone will stay on in recovery regardless of me moving it around or letting it sit for long periods of time.
I have noticed something new though. If I don't enter my Google account information (doing so starts app syncing) then the phone is much more stable. It seems that I can do a simple task like turning on wireless tethering and then if I don't do anything else the phone will be stay on for hours. If I open the browser, the play store, or start moving icons around then I only have a minute or two before it will shutdown.

Updating to a newer 10.2 nightly might fix the problem. Otherwise get the last_kmsg file when it shuts down next time and post it here. Someone might be able to diagnose the problem.

Thanks for the input. I'll give a newer 10.2 nightly a shot but I am seeing the issue on builds that had previously worked fine (stock and 10.1). I have no /proc/last_kmsg after an unplanned shutdown. Based on what I'm reading this might mean that it's locking up before there's a kernel panic?
two options
