[HELP] Unable to OTA update following device encryption - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a Galaxy S3 (I9300), and recently encrypted the device to enable to me to use my employer's exchange email service (NHS.net). The encryption process went without issue and my phone has been working normally since (about 2 weeks). However I have now received a message for a 170Kb OTA firmware update for the phone. When I click "Update now" is says the following:
Unable to update new software. Device is encrypted. Decrypt?
Click to collapse
If I click OK it takes me to the "Security and lock screen" sub-menu in settings. In here the "Encrypt device" button is greyed out (as expected) and there seems to be nothing more to do. The update does not proceed. If I click cancel the device re-prompts me later anyway.
The problem is that my device keeps on prompting me to update with my only two options either to proceed as above (and get nowhere) OR postpone the update for up to 3 hours and get prompted again.
So now I am trapped in a situation where my device is nagging me to update but gives me no way to do so. As far as I am aware, encryption of an android device is irreversible without a factory reset so I am confused as to why the firmware update even asks for it?
Am I missing something here or is this a crappily designed security update from Samsung? I really don't want to have to factory reset my device then re-download all my software AND re-encrypt my device to use my email for a 170kb update; especially if this will happen again!
Any advice would be much appreciated,
Thanks

Hi,
Tried Samsung Kies repeatedly; it downloads the update and then during the "Firmware upgrade in progress" times out after an hour.
Looks like I am the only person experiencing this problem; may have to factory reset the device after all.

You are not the only one, I am experiencing the exact same problem with encrypted device and not being able to install updates.
So far I have not been able to find a solution.
Manually apply OTA updates is in testing and a few have got it to work: I cant post a link but I did a search on these forums and found a tread about it.
Hope we can find the answer

Encrypted GALAXY S3 update
I am experiencing the exact same problem with encrypted device and not being able to install updates as my device is encrypted due to the Exchange! Hope someone already solved this issue? TIA

Update From
IMM76D.I9300BUALE6
to
IMM76D.I9300BUBLG3

Same problem here. I would appreciate any idea. OTA updates usually work fine with my Asus Transformer, so this should be a Samsung related problem.

Update: For my phone, it actually seems possible to decrypt the device via the Security Menu. Samsungs support told me that this has to be done before the update can be installed....

I was also getting this a few weeks ago but when I connected to my pc and ran the update through Kies it updated without having to decrypt first
I've now removed my exchange connection to nhs.net and decrypted so unable to test

We too are experiencing this problem despite Samsungs "SAFE" (Samsung Approved For Enterprise) designation on the S III.
What version of KIES did you use? I've tried v2.2 and v2.3

I realize this thread is a little old but i'll reply anyway. I've seen on other forums that your enterprise email is causing the issue. You have to remove your enterprise email/exchange acct in order to decrypt the device. Once removed, the option to decrypt should be available. You may then accept the OTA. Your phone is only doing what it's told to do by the exchange server. It might be a ***** to remove the account but i think it would still be easier than a factory reset.

Thanks for the post haddy17. We have investigated that option but when you're working with potentially thousands of staff/employees, it's a tad cumbersome to have them remove, upgrade, reconfigure. If it were just me, it would be fine. We're currently trying to get a response from Samsung and while we have made some progress, it's not clear where the end may be...

You are probably using Exchange servers? One way could be to change ActiveSync policy to not require encryption on device. This is selectable feature. Or maybe create two policies and move clients between them from request of user.
There are still shortcomings what comes to corporate security and Android mobiles (well there are issues on other platforms too)

Debloater Preventing Phone from OTA Update

Hello all, I'm having a slight problem, I noticed that AT&T keeps trying to roll-out a new software update, however, my Galaxy S6 Active will download it fine, and then when trying to install the update I get prompted with the message "The install cannot be completed".
I thought at first this must be due to an application that I had disabled, but unfortunately it was not the case as I enabled every blocked app, and yet I still got the same error.
8 files still remain disabled even though I tell Debloater to "unblock" all and they include the following (I have tried countless times to enable these files with no luck):
ContainerAgent2.apk
EmergencyLauncher.apk
KnoxBBCProvider.apk
KnoxKeyguard.apk
KnoxShortcuts.apk
KnoxSwitcher.apk
KnoxTrustAgent.apk
KnoxVerifier.apk
I even performed a hard factory data reset, and these apps still remained blocked. I just want to be able to receive OTA software updates. Any ideas on what I can do? Thanks.
Install the original firmware via Odin.

Issues after official OTA to N

Hello,
Friday I received the Android 7.0 OTA update for my phone. Was very hyped about it as an evening before, my brother received his on his S7.
But after it has installed, I noticed a couple of issue on my phone and I didn't seem to find a "collection" of all the issue that are being reported as of today. Of course, they are widely chaotically spread throughout the net.
So here are my issues (trying to describe them as simple and on-point as I can) and feel free to add your own issues/comments:
i. Samsung Cloud backing-up process ending up in errors: "Couldn't back up data. An error has occurred (329)" / "Couldn't sync data. An error has occurred (309)". Every time I want to back-up my phone via Samsung Cloud, very soon after I launch the process, "Samsung Keyboard" returns an error "Samsung keyboard has stopped." For the record, I'm not even using Samsung keyboard at all but Gboard so I don't know why I get that error from Samsung and not from Google, for instance. After closing the prompt, the back-up process will carry on until the end, finishing with the errors mentioned above.
ii. Private mode cannot be accessed anymore. Every time I try to enable it, I get "Failed to turn on Private Mode. Try again". I do have content saved to Private Mode and I'd like to retrieve it before factory restoring the device. Do you have any hints on this? Nothing worked that I trying recovering the files.
iii. Overall experience is a little sluggish and not as snappy as 6.0.1. Every reaction of the OS is almost half a second later than the touch action. WTF understand they rushed it to release it but I don't feel that all the best optimizations were made before release.
Do you experience any of it? Especially the slow reactions of the update, overall?

That's the 1st next step but I thought I'd ask around maybe someone has had the same issues and found a workaround instead of hard reset it..
Thanks
Solved the "Private Mode" issue: head to (stock) recovery -> wipe cache partition -> reboot -> all good. Now the mode and files within are accessible.
Aaand I didn't have to format the phone.
Very well done, mate! (note to myself)
Visit apkmirror and download updated samsung apps. I presume that helps.

Firmware Finder - anyone successful in manually updating?

Hey guys.
Reaching out to see if any has been able to use the Firmware Finder app to update the firmware? Currently I'm on 108 however can download 122 via the app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teammt.gmanrainy.huaweifirmwarefinder
Now is does say its incompatible at first however you can indeed download either the latest OTA or full firmware, but seemingly can't get the device to acknowledge it. Things I've tried:
- Using the VPN and DNS options in firmware finder, then checking for system updates
- Putting the downloaded OTA zip in a created folder on internal storage called DLOAD, rebooting to recovery, but nothing happens.
- Tried extracting all the contents of the zip into that folder, again recovery doesn't acknowledge it.
It'd be great if we could perform manual updates like this, though annoying if the best we could do is merely download it!
Anyone any suggestions?
Let's see if we can get this working...
*update - seems I was entering recovery (power off and then power on holding power button + volume up) where I should have gone to download mode (hold both volume up and down). It gets to a screen but says Installation Failed. That's with the zip directly in the DLOAD folder and then sigh the contents extracted....
I used to use this app on my Honor 9 Lite, however it hasn't worked for a long time.
The method they used was to spoof the Huawei servers using DNS etc to trigger an OTA but Huawei changed the server location.
This app purely exists now to tell you there is an update available to download, however you'll need to use other methods to get it installed, which probably requires an unlocked bootloader at the very least, then a firmware flash tool.

Apparently not, or at least the developer of that App doesn't seem to think so.
I am also looking to update to the latest firmware too, it has been pushed out to some devices, but nothing for me yet. Although I did get a 3 branded update, I'm hoping that hasn't messed up my OTA's from Huawei

See I was on Three but moving over to O2. When I first set the phone up, I used the O2 sim but then put my Three sim in and will use until my number gets transferred over. Ive no Three branding yet

That's similar to what I did, put my old Tesco(O2) sim in slot 1 - No branding. The next day I also put my 3 sim into slot 2, after a few minutes an OTA pops up.
Checked on here a a few people said it's safe to install, it just activates Wi-Fi calling & the 3 apps.
After reboot it had also installed a 3 splash screen & changed my chrome homepage to the 3 website.
Minor annoyances yes, apparently fixed by a Factory reset. I just hope the change in software version doesn't delay future updates. Hopefully this 122 update pushes out soon.

[SOLVED] S9+ Fails to Unlock After Latest Pie OTA Update

Hey all,
My phone updated today and ever since I cannot move past the initial lock screen. When unlocked, the UI appears to crash and send me back to the lock screen. My pin code works for turning the phone off, restarting the phone and putting it into emergency mode, which indicates some sort of UI crash.
Because this is a new account I can't post a link to a video of the issue directly, but the YouTube video code is: 8ZhlH-Tt-NU
I have tried the standard fixes like wiping the cache partition and booting into safe mode, but these don't seem to make any difference. Unfortunately I never logged into my Samsung account on this device, so their 'Find My Mobile' service is not an option. I am however signed into my Google account on the device and it does have wifi/network enabled.
The phone is running PPR1.180610.011/G965FXXU2CSA8
On the phones internal memory is a bunch of photos from a recent trip to Japan, I'm a fool for not backing these up sooner but I would hate to lose them.
Has anybody experienced anything like this before, and is there any way for me to get back into the phone, or atleast recover the photos that I took?
Thanks!
Edit:
One potential route out of this I can see is sideloading the same or a subsequent OTA update using ADB to hopefully fix the issue. Unfortunately despite some digging I can't find any updates that will allow installation from: PPR1.180610.011/G965FXXU2CSA8
If anybody has any information on this specific firmware version (Is it beta 3? beta 4? ect.), its installation path and where files relating to it may be listed/hosted it would be appreciated. Also how disasterous would it be to take a mismatched OTA upgrade and modify the metadata to allow it to be sideloaded onto the phone? I assume this would almost certainly break the OS completely but I'm not too sure.
You can try to flash your firmware again with ODIN, but with the HOME_CSC (Important!)

Thanks for the reply Profi I had no idea using HOME_CSC would retain user data. I have tried flashing a few different versions of Pie (wish HOME_CSC) using Odin but with no luck, every time the phone boots I have the same problem. Do you know if there is a sure way to downgrade to Oreo while retaining user data? I have seen a few posts of people attemping this and getting stuck in bootloops, eventually requrining them to factory reset.
To give a final update on this. I attempted the Oreo downgrade, upon reboot the phone was stuck in a bootloop so I updated to Pie again. When the phone booted I tried the pin code as quickly as I could, and after some glitchy graphics on the screen it unlocked. From here I turn on the stay awake while plugged in feature in the developer options and managed to transfer all my data over to PC.
I don't believe it was the firmware changes that actually made any difference, because any further attempts to put my pin in, to remove the pin code for example, failed and cause the same crashing behaviour.
All data is recovered, I have factory reset the phone and all appears to be behaving as normal again. If anybody stumbles upon this with the same issue, all hope is not lost, but unfortunately I was unable to determine a realiable way to overcome it. It seems in this case it was just dumb luck.
Thanks for the assistance.

Question New stock, unmodified S23 Ultra; banking apps and samsung pass doesn't work, saying it's rooted but it's not

Hey! So yeah, loving the phone but it's giving me a headache; it's not rooted or tampered with. Not even OEM unlocked. Only developer options were unlocked. Apps and settings were migrated from my previous Samsung phone with SmartSwitch.
From the download menu:
CURRENT BINARY: Samsung Official

All kinds of root and safetynet and whatever apps pass and software and security patches are up to date (Google Play 1 January 2023, Android security patch 1 February 2023, Status: Official)
But Samsung Pass says "Your device has been rooted. Samsung Pass cannot be used on rooted devices for security reasons." Banking apps are obscure but one does give some hints as to the possible causes: modification attempt through hooking, using untrusted screen reader application, root or jailbreak, using untrusted keyboard application.
I use AdGuard and a 3rd party launcher (Flick) instead of OneUI and FlorisBoard keyboard but even if they are uninstalled the issue stays. I don't use any other major apps, just a bunch of regular apps. I don't use "screen reader" as far as I know and TalkBack is disabled.
This is really annoying and I can see dozens of similar cases even for older Sxx generations sometimes after updates and happening out of nowhere and even with new stock phones. People report that sometimes factory reset helps but sometimes doesn't and sometimes it only helps for a while.
I really don't want to factory reset just to try if it works until I exhausted all other options. It took me well over a day to set up everything the way I wanted.
Any help other than reset is very much appreciated!
Find Samsung Pass in apps...and clear data.
^Thanks, but it didn't help.

I have the same issue and Im thinking about it is caused by smart switch from my old s21u which was rooted. Did You use smart switch too? Maybe I should do a factory reset, but then I lose all my stuff..
^Yep, I also used SmartSwitch with a rooted S9+. And I did find a few posts about SmartSwitch being the issue. But there are also some posts that said that reseting and not using SmartSwitch but manually installing all the apps they used the issue came back later. So far not using SmartSwitch is the only thing that might help but hopefully there's something else I can do to fix this without reseting.
