Seriously, I just started to play with it as this is my first forray into the Android, I decided not to ROOT the phone. I wanted to get to know the unit first *STOCK* and then decided if ROOTING is necessary or not... Mostly just exploring the phone and getting used to Android... Enjoy!

this is something that everyone should do with new phones, IMO (mostly noobs to the android environment). people are quick to root just because they see everyone else doing it.

Agreed. When I first got my Captivate, which was my first excursion into Android land, I ran it stock for about a month before I rooted and modded. That showed a bit of restraint, too, because the Captivate did have some serious problems on stock, ie. lag, gps, etc. On the SGS II running stock is a great experience with no serious problems.
Agreed, just use the phone as is, ask questions, learn how things work, experiment with different applications, widgets, settings, etc. Only after you've fully exhausted the possibilities of what comes stock with the phone and determined that you really need a feature that it doesn't provide should you consider rooting and all that. In short, don't try to change what you don't fully understand yet.

Same. The thing is, I actually kind of like the TouchWiz. I don't really like the aesthetics and the lock screen is terribly crappy, but I don't want to sacrifice everything else just to get a different lock screen and better looking icons.
I would have also liked that CRT animation...

Good thing it has gorilla glass on it then.
I used it for a bit, was unhappy with battery life. So I rooted via Entropy's stock+root package, de-bloated it via Titanuim Backup, and am enjoying it with better battery life.

Actually, there are ROMs that are based on stock. I didn't know that until now...used CM7 on my Captivate and wished there was a combination of the aesthetics of TW and the speed and functionality of CM7.
UnNamed ROM is an excellent TouchWiz-based custom ROM. There are custom mods for the lock screen (a notification toggle flash that includes a toggle for lockscreen), and some different mods for certain icons, I believe (Kitchen?).
UnNamed ROM is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1299474
UOT Kitchen: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=990829
Notification MOD with lockscreen toggle: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1295965
I waited and waited. Thought about rooting and using a ROM before the official ICS update came from AT&T but just decided to wait. Finally got the update via Kies, excited like a school girl. Initially it was a cool new bit of scenery, and as the OS settled in with me, i found myself disappointed and wanting my gingy back. I've been upgrade for a couple months now i think, and had plenty of time to try to get used to it.
I am finding lots of things that just plain suck.
1 - Text message notification audible alert discontinues after awhile (unknown amount of time), only resolution I've found is to reboot the phone. This sucks because just out of nowhere my text notification tone stops. Everything else like ringtone etc is fine. This is a dealbreaker for me almost. This worked fine on Ginerbread.
2 - new Swype software gives me problems when the word suggestion feature stops working completely. Swype is hard to do without word suggestions at times. Only solution i've found is again, reboot the phone. This sucks. I know, don't use swype, but i WANT to use it. It worked perfectly on Gingerbread.
3 - the widget for Google Voice is super tiny now, and i don't see a way of making it bigger. It's approximately the size of 4 icons, whereas before on Gingerbread it was huge and you could easily read/see your voicemails. Maybe i'm missing something on how to change the widget size, but i see no way of doing it.
4 - my News and Weather widget, which i used for weather and news all the time, since my original Galaxy S, does not display any weather information anymore. Just says "No Weather Information". this worked fine on Gingerbread. I guess different phone OS makes widgets work differently. I just want mine to work as expected. News still comes through fine though.
5 - Unlocking the screen seems more difficult now, usually takes me a couple tries, whereas it seemed really smooth and awesome before the update
6 - Power Saving widget is huge now, takes up half of one screen, whereas before it was just 1 row and you could scroll across. Why make it bigger and take up more room with no additional functionality?
After listing all this out, i'm trying to think of the things i LIKE about ICS update, and i can only think of one, which is the data monitoring/limiting which is kind of a cool feature. I doesn't seem any faster really than before. So overall, i honestly was happier with Gingerbread. 6 things that i find that suck versus one thing i like.
Maybe this is me being picky, but as excited as I was to get ICS, i'm equally disappointed in the upgrade. My wife uses a Galaxy Note and it is available for her phone now, and I told her don't bother with the upgrade.
Anyone have any advice??? experience the same problems? I know i could root, install a custom rom etc, but i really like the touchwiz stuff from samsung and i was really happy with just the stock gingerbread OS, even with all the bloatware, i just disregard all that junk.
I'm having the same problem with text notification I just notice that I get a text it would sound but just about an hour ago it just stopped I would get a text and nothing ringtones works and everyrhing but I think is a ics bug maybe it would get fixed in the new update 4.0.4

at&t sucks. bottom line.
Advice, if you want to stick with touchjizz, run a custom one, there are plenty that *should* have those issues taken care of.
But the widget size issue, thats just looks, with a different launcher can change size of widgets.
Lol I called this one. A bunch of people upgrade to stock ICS. Then they complain and want to switch back, mess it up, and start new threads. Hopefully they all learned their lesson about carrier upgrades . I mean even I tried it, just to see what it looked like and how it functioned. Then again I knew how to get back to a custom Rom Before I did it. It's actually not too bad, but there were just too many bugs and battery life was too bad for my taste.

It isn't 100% on all phones it seems to be random but instead of posting something VERY VERY risky for people not so inclined to troll the forums and find out about the risks of certain actions why not shut up or post what you think will work then link them to a topic showing what bad could happen. You just seem like you want people to brick and make more topics about how they tried to reset and bricked. You also need to think of Google searches that link to this topic and they read it and see you said reset and they do it. It isn't just xda its anyone with the internet don't lead people to a possible brick

The only way to go "back" to Gingerbread is to flash UCKH7 straight stock or one of the Gingerbread stock plus root packages in Entropy512's thread. So yes, use that, or one of my guides.
My i777 is coming in the mail tomorrow. I'm very excited, its my first Android. I've been researching custom firmware and stuff like that for about a month around the web. I just have no idea where to start. I believe my phone still has some form of 2.3 on it, but it could be the current 4.0.4 ICS.
From what I understand, I update the drivers on my computer with Kies, download Odin to root the device and then what? Or superoneclick? I'm interested in CM10 but I know the bugs are still being worked out. I need my camera, MMS, bluetooth, 3g data, at&t radios, mhl, Touchwiz toggles, all the functionality with no soft keys at the bottom. JB would be great if its possible. Other wise I might as well just update the phone to stock ICS and root it for other stuff I want like sixaxis and over/underclocking apps.
There is a reason we have stickies

There's things like KK 2.3.6, is that custom GB firmware? I know there is lots of information but no where to start.
pretty sure it would make more sense once you actually have the device in hand....seems pointless to create a new thread asking how to get started when you dont even have the device yet.
use it for at least a day or 2 before you start messing with custom ANYTHING
hell, dont even root it right away. just use it as is to get a feel for it, and verify there is nothing wrong with the hardware....if you just jump in and flash custom firmware, how will you ever know if an issue was hardware or firmware related?
Interesting, good point Pirateghost. I was wanting to put custom stuff on there while I had access to a computer this weekend. Might as well wait though. I'll have a laptop to mess with everything at my own pace by Black Friday anyway.
If it is still running GB, should I upgrade it to ICS, or would that hinder the root process when I want to do that?

The second part of your reply is absolutely spot on.
The first part i dont agree with a 100%.
I too plan to purchase the i777 model in the not too distant future, and its always a good thing to start reading early. Just like getting a feel of the stock rom/hardware is essential.. its always a good thing to read up well in advance. By the time a person is analyzing the h/w.. he is in a position to relate with other user's experiences.
I too was reading up all the stickies and really did got stuck up with the KK6 2.3.6 thing mentioned right at the start and no clue/legend being mentioned as to what it was. I googled a lot and many results had the same thing.. simply started using the terms w.o any hints.
It does gets confusing tbh you know
The thing is, I understand and know the stock hardware and firmware very well already. I have been using my girlfriend's GS2 from Sprint, the "Epic 4g Touch" since she got it in May. I've used it with GB and then ICS in August (I had to tell her to stop ignoring the notification, the update was a good thing!), but it will be good to evaluate the item to fully determine that everything is good with it.
It seems like in your first post, you steered yourself away from CM10, but everything you listed works except mhl I believe. And if you really want that, you will be able to dualboot into shostock once Siyah kernel gets updated.

Well, I have successfully booted up 4.2 on my Droid X2. I have been running it since Monday, and it's pretty stable. the only things that aren't working are:
Video Camera
Bluetooth
A few bugs from CM10.
I want to know if you guys want me to finish it up, and try to ready it up for a release this weekend, or if you want me to try to fix bluetooth, and the video camera.
EDIT: I'm going to attempt to fix bluetooth. If it causes too many problems, i'll release it without bluetooth and work on it in my free time. There is a couple stability issues I have patched up, and it seems to be working just fine so far.
EDIT2: I'm taking finals tomorrow then i'll have a good month of tinkering with this ROM. My goal is to get it pretty stable by then end of August (like 8/10 stable).

I have been working on this since about the time CM10 A2.99999 was released. The first time it didn't even boot, the next time, touch screen didn't work, and i've just been wiping out issues since then. It's pretty stable, has about the same battery life as CM10 A3 but I know of some apps that help it greatly. Right now I can get about a 12 hour battery life. This includes a phone call or 2, texting, some web browsing, and a little bit of gaming during my web design class.
I have it to a point where it can be a daily driver for some. I want it to be a little bit more stable. I'm free today so i'll spend most of my evening working on it. Tomorrow i'll have a little free time.

Nice.
I can't wait to flash this!
I haven't been on aosp since November last year and I have one question seeing as I am considering returning. Is the interface lag gone ? Like pulling down the notification shade, it was much smoother on tw than it was on AOSP/AOKP. So now in 4.3 AOSP/AOKP is that gone ? I would do it myself but im on 4.2.2 tw and I don't want to have to wipe then flash just to see the lag still there.
4.3 I can't say. Its incomplete. No lag in 4.2.2 though, then again - it never lagged for me so you're still going to have to test yourself.
Nandroid backup takes 3 minutes. Wipe and flash 5 minutes. Setup wizard 2 minutes. Just make sure you also have a titanium backup

So you're not grateful for the first part of my post?
Well anyway, as stated, I never had the lag issue you had. You'll have to test it yourself, since you're the only person I know who had that problem anyway. Just because no one else has it, doesn't mean you wont have it.
Aokp s3 milestone2 is much smoother than cm10.1
I tested both of them and stick with aokp.
