AOSP/AOKP - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I haven't been on aosp since November last year and I have one question seeing as I am considering returning. Is the interface lag gone ? Like pulling down the notification shade, it was much smoother on tw than it was on AOSP/AOKP. So now in 4.3 AOSP/AOKP is that gone ? I would do it myself but im on 4.2.2 tw and I don't want to have to wipe then flash just to see the lag still there.

4.3 I can't say. Its incomplete. No lag in 4.2.2 though, then again - it never lagged for me so you're still going to have to test yourself.
Nandroid backup takes 3 minutes. Wipe and flash 5 minutes. Setup wizard 2 minutes. Just make sure you also have a titanium backup

Some graphical glitches on 4.3 but I can live with that when I'm on aosp .

So you're not grateful for the first part of my post?
Well anyway, as stated, I never had the lag issue you had. You'll have to test it yourself, since you're the only person I know who had that problem anyway. Just because no one else has it, doesn't mean you wont have it.

Aokp s3 milestone2 is much smoother than cm10.1
I tested both of them and stick with aokp.

lag issues? i'm not familiar with blade buddy or that touch screen app for galaxy.
i haven't done anything *too* intensive on the phone but i have rarely experience any type of lag on this device. the lack of lagging has been very impressive to me.
if you are on the stock ROM and kernel and still experiecing lag, based on my personal experience, you might want to look into taking it back for an exchange as it could be a hardware issue.
if you don't experience the lag on a stock ROM and kernel, it might be whatever custom ROM or kernel you're using has an issue or bug. if you're on a custom ROM/kernel, also good to check in those specific threads to see if anybody else has reported a similar issue so the dev knows to look into it and resolve.
hope that helps!
Yea when I first got the phone the xda east major laggy and that's before I rooted so I guess I need to take it back then cuz this sucks...since I rooted its been flawless but couple days later the lag would come back and now my screen is becoming unresponsive at time for like 2-3 secs!!!

yea. as a last resort test, i'd flash everything back to stock and run it for a day. see if its still laggy. if it is still laggy, find good examples of when it lags so when you take it back, you can show the person how laggy it is through the examples.
hopefully you can swap out for a device w/no issues!

lol yea, given the unknown area rooting a device currently sits from a legal standpoint, i'd avoid anything related to rooting the device as a prime example.
ideally, if you're experiencing lag on the device, it will occur frequently in common tasks like making/ending a phone call or moving between text messages or moving between menus in the settings screen, etc. it makes the best case for having an issue when you're able to demonstrate it lags during normal routine operations.
hope that helps!

hah yea. working on mainly two small apps on the market, root check and flashimagegui. pondering publishing the completely stock ROM with root, busybox and some developer tools i use on my personal device (as I did publish this on the evo and it was decently popular - might be where you saw my name). also, trying to help out (give back) in the q&a boards when i can!
if you find some good common tasks which cause the device to lag, post them back here as people with the same or similar issues might find this thread through searching and it'll give them some rough benchmark to compare against.
i've yet to see this device lag through any common tasks i run. previous android phones ive had would experience lag so this device has definitely impressed me!

Words with Friends and CM9

So I'm throwing this out there as its kinda driving me crazy, though I kinda know what the answer will be.
I play words with friends have done for a few months now, 2 weeks ago I flashed my Samsung GS2 with CM9 build 01062012 thinking It wasn't going to be stable enough to run as a daily I was shocked at how smooth it was etc.
I've now been using it as a daily and will continue to use it, will just re-flash it when bugs get fixed etc.
Now back to WWF, so I installed this and played it, it seems every other go it freezes my phone, to the point only battery removal will solve it.
I emailed the dev for the game and they said bug fixes were coming, I've had 2 updates in a week and each time it solves it for about a day then goes back to freezing my phone.
The weird part of this is when it freezes I hold power down for 10 secs and it turns off I reboot and once back on, the battery would've lost like 15/20% charge, I had to do this 4 times within an hour the once and my battery went from 80% to 13% just cos of rebooting . Then even more weirdly after deciding not to play the game my phone's charge went from 13% to 20% over a half hour period
Has anyone encountered weird behaviors like this before?
I know that this is a testing ROM would this cause this issue?
Yeah man, I play that **** too and had the exact same problem. I just put it down to cm,9 being an alpha. Sorry I've got no fixes but your not going mad. Ha
I just play it on the iPad instead until the rom becomes more stable.

ICS updated but want Ginerbread back i think

I waited and waited. Thought about rooting and using a ROM before the official ICS update came from AT&T but just decided to wait. Finally got the update via Kies, excited like a school girl. Initially it was a cool new bit of scenery, and as the OS settled in with me, i found myself disappointed and wanting my gingy back. I've been upgrade for a couple months now i think, and had plenty of time to try to get used to it.
I am finding lots of things that just plain suck.
1 - Text message notification audible alert discontinues after awhile (unknown amount of time), only resolution I've found is to reboot the phone. This sucks because just out of nowhere my text notification tone stops. Everything else like ringtone etc is fine. This is a dealbreaker for me almost. This worked fine on Ginerbread.
2 - new Swype software gives me problems when the word suggestion feature stops working completely. Swype is hard to do without word suggestions at times. Only solution i've found is again, reboot the phone. This sucks. I know, don't use swype, but i WANT to use it. It worked perfectly on Gingerbread.
3 - the widget for Google Voice is super tiny now, and i don't see a way of making it bigger. It's approximately the size of 4 icons, whereas before on Gingerbread it was huge and you could easily read/see your voicemails. Maybe i'm missing something on how to change the widget size, but i see no way of doing it.
4 - my News and Weather widget, which i used for weather and news all the time, since my original Galaxy S, does not display any weather information anymore. Just says "No Weather Information". this worked fine on Gingerbread. I guess different phone OS makes widgets work differently. I just want mine to work as expected. News still comes through fine though.
5 - Unlocking the screen seems more difficult now, usually takes me a couple tries, whereas it seemed really smooth and awesome before the update
6 - Power Saving widget is huge now, takes up half of one screen, whereas before it was just 1 row and you could scroll across. Why make it bigger and take up more room with no additional functionality?
After listing all this out, i'm trying to think of the things i LIKE about ICS update, and i can only think of one, which is the data monitoring/limiting which is kind of a cool feature. I doesn't seem any faster really than before. So overall, i honestly was happier with Gingerbread. 6 things that i find that suck versus one thing i like.
Maybe this is me being picky, but as excited as I was to get ICS, i'm equally disappointed in the upgrade. My wife uses a Galaxy Note and it is available for her phone now, and I told her don't bother with the upgrade.
Anyone have any advice??? experience the same problems? I know i could root, install a custom rom etc, but i really like the touchwiz stuff from samsung and i was really happy with just the stock gingerbread OS, even with all the bloatware, i just disregard all that junk.
I'm having the same problem with text notification I just notice that I get a text it would sound but just about an hour ago it just stopped I would get a text and nothing ringtones works and everyrhing but I think is a ics bug maybe it would get fixed in the new update 4.0.4

at&t sucks. bottom line.
Advice, if you want to stick with touchjizz, run a custom one, there are plenty that *should* have those issues taken care of.
But the widget size issue, thats just looks, with a different launcher can change size of widgets.
Lol I called this one. A bunch of people upgrade to stock ICS. Then they complain and want to switch back, mess it up, and start new threads. Hopefully they all learned their lesson about carrier upgrades . I mean even I tried it, just to see what it looked like and how it functioned. Then again I knew how to get back to a custom Rom Before I did it. It's actually not too bad, but there were just too many bugs and battery life was too bad for my taste.

It isn't 100% on all phones it seems to be random but instead of posting something VERY VERY risky for people not so inclined to troll the forums and find out about the risks of certain actions why not shut up or post what you think will work then link them to a topic showing what bad could happen. You just seem like you want people to brick and make more topics about how they tried to reset and bricked. You also need to think of Google searches that link to this topic and they read it and see you said reset and they do it. It isn't just xda its anyone with the internet don't lead people to a possible brick

The only way to go "back" to Gingerbread is to flash UCKH7 straight stock or one of the Gingerbread stock plus root packages in Entropy512's thread. So yes, use that, or one of my guides.

What happen if it does have camera support? excellent, you call?
what happen if it gets wifi working? what should you call? superior?
Couple things:
Wrong section of xda.
Wrong forum, go to wherever you got your ROM and ask for help.
Problems are known to be had with JB, have you checked that they aren't still around in your version?

The reason I called troll is because the Skyrocket doesn't even have those problems on cm10...in addition to wrong forum. My wife's Skyrocket has not one of the issues you listed on cm10. And finally, you listed a broken cm10 build from another website here on xda, where you could have found a current, working build.

About roms

Hi,
I´ve been using Omega rom for a few weeks now and am pretty happy with it. The only thing that annoys me is that i have to manually update it everytime there is an update and i do feel that this is quite often...
There are two other roms that i´ve been looking at, Checkrom EvoHD & Cynogenmod. Can anyone tell me if i setup either of these will it be able to update my rom just via the phone.
Also if you have tryed either Checkrom or cynogen i´d love to hear your oppinion on them as i can´t say i can find any recent info on them...
What do you mean with "manually"?
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
He means no OTA.
BTW you question it's not clear, you just need your phone to update, even manually.
If a Rom support OTA it's mentioned in OP.
You should use roms with OTA.
But here is another question, how many times you upgrade per mouth. Usually here mostly no diffrences, everything is same. Sometimes even regressions happen (Transpartecny bug)
Transparency is not a bug with the ROM, but with the launcher so get over it.
BTW OP I am watching you thread for any type of "best" questions...

Why should you use ROMs with OTA? The Omega update process works well.
Just check the changelog in advance to see if the update makes sense...
