[A] JB apps which can safely be converted to system apps: - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Due to the change in internal partition in Jellybean ROMs, such as CM10 and AOKP, it has been suggested to convert some apps in TiBu to system apps to save space.
Apps can safely be converted to system apps:
Amazon App Store
Apex Launcher
Cobalt Theme
Facebook
Gmail
Google Play Store
Google+
Maps
Nova Launcher
Noodles
SeekDroid

WeatherBug Elite
Let's keep the list going...

Which apps can safely be converted to system apps?

I can't say for sure, but I can't imagine that it would matter, its prolly safe to convert anny app. When building a ROM, u can make (I think) any app part of the ROM, so that other people will have that app when they flash that ROM. That's what your talking about right? Making it part of the ROM itself? Instead of it being on the data partition? If that's the case, then I don't think it matters. If you need space, move big apps like g+, Facebook, instagram, etc.
Bacon in my coffee, please? You don't have bacon?! Unacceptable!!

I converted chrome to a system app and got a invalid app error when trying to launch. I'll try other Google apps to see how that works and report back tomorrow.

Did you delete the stock browser first?

I froze the stock browser. Are you suggesting that I delete it and the move chrome?

I'm not sure. U can back up the stock one to ur comp and try it. I just didn't know if u had two browsers trying to run as system browser, well, that could have been a problem.

Uninstalling stock browser then converting chrome to system app still results in chrome error. Oh well....

ROM AOKP Jellybean Build 1 unofficial
Regarding space, I've moved pretty much every user app to the sd card to conserve internal space in the newly configured Jellybean partitions. I'd like to move some apps back into internal so that I can utilize their widgets.

Well I'd say move the ones u want, and don't worry about memory until u have a problem. I'm running jb, barely have any of my apps on SD card, and I haven't had any problems. Haven't needed to worry about it. Been that way for 2 weeks now. Just delete app data every now and then and your fine.

So last night a few apps posted updates (Facebook, Maps, etc.), and when I tried updating them, I received the "insufficient storage" error, even though I showed having approximately 78mb free in the Internal memory. I had to clear the cache and partition and reboot, and only then was I able to update the apps. Has anyone else run into this issue?

What do you have on your phone that u only have 78mb of space left? That's kinda on the low side of things ain't it? I'd say do exactly as it says, clear some space. Wipe the data for each specific app on your phone, and see how much internal storage that frees up.
I've never had that problem on these phones, cuz they have quite a bit of internal storage. I had the desire at one time, and that only had like 140mb of internal storage, so after setting up the phone, and putting a few apps on it (fb, g+,etc..) I was down to about 20mb of free space, and I would receive that low space error all the time. I would have to clear all the app data, and that would usually clear up about 20-30mb, enough so my phone would do what it was sposed to.

Chrome seems to be the memory hog culprit. I've moved that to the SD Card and all appears well.

I was down that low also and had to pick and choose what apk's to keep and delete... my music player alone is 25 mb. And doesn't help my biggest apk's can't be moved to SD card (Firefox, neutron music player, Pandora, etc..) Running that low was giving me problems like that. Just going into setting the process was using like 46 mb. So if your running on 78 mb and with on going processes, You will run into low storage issue for sure and things not running or running correctly due to low storage

Amazon App Store
Cobalt Theme
Facebook
Gmail
Google Play Store
Maps
Nova Launcher
SeekDroid

As far as I can tell so far, u can add Google+ and YouTube to that list.
U wanna keep the list updated? Or u want me to repost it and keep it up to date? Or maybe make a thread as a continuously updated list?
EDIT: on the other side of things, xda DOES NOT work as a system app (which doesn't make sense cuz its such a vital part of my system ). Do we wanna make a 'doesn't work' section, too?

Free up Internal memory !

Sga internal memory sucks as we all know and Link2sd and app2sd are not working,it tried all possible ways to get free memory even partitioning to ext2 but all in vain.
I found this app which really works and free up internal memory on rooted device with just clicks, moved facebook, maps etc to sd.
Its called "Gemini App Manager" its Free and works tried myself.

cant move maps please help !!!! how to move Maps???
This app is awesome But I'm having some problems with apps that syncs contacts like Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm, if I move them to the SD card and reboot the phone, they all ask for sign in and sync the contacts again, on phones memory this doesn't happens.
But still a great app, I could block some apps that starts with the system boot up.
Thanks.

My experience says that don't move Maps as its system application and needs to acess gps, wifi and many other system rescources so leave it on internal memory bcoz if u forecfully moved map, it will become unfuntional of no use, so leave it as it is :|
So what would be best moved and what not ?
maxmix
do we have list of default apps that have to move and do not have to move by this?
Answer is already in my reply that don't move system app !

Market apps attached to account

Google play keeps a record of every app downloaded under a gmail account including the free ones. I was going through this list and found a bunch of old apps that I don't want or aren't even on the market anymore. Does anyone know of a way to "clean up" this list by removing unnecessary or unneeded apps? I don't know if I'm missing something but I can't seem to figure it out for some reason. Do I need to manage the Gmail account from a computer? Any insight is appreciated.

nope but it isn't supposed to show all that
it used to show your updates available, then all up to date installed, then at very bottom it would show all purchased but not installed apps
here we go people
temporary fix for the issue
and some sweet looking markets to go along with it!
go here http://www.droidforums.net/forum/b-boy/167282-3-5-15-market-google-play-blacked-out.html
and grab one of the themed 3.4.7 vending.apk
extract the vending.apk from the zip
go to manage apps and uninstall updates on Google play store(will be under downloaded apps tab)
then use your favorite root capable file explorers to push the themed vending.apk to system/app , change permissions to rw-r--r-- ,reboot, enjoy!
I picked the black/cyan one, it's sexy!
the issue does not occur on this version of the play store, and it won't auto update on ya since it is themed

Hey Ash,
Thanks for taking the time to write in. I can certainly understand your frustration with seeing every app in your "All" tab in My Apps. At this time, there is no way to delete records of old apps either on the Google Play website (play.google.com) or from the My Apps section of the Google Play Store app.
We know that some users are looking for a way to delete old apps from Google Play, and we'll certainly take this into account as we work to improve the Google Play experience in the future.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions- I'm happy to help.
Regards,
BretAnne The Google Play Support Team

Hi Ash,
Thank you for writing back to me. Unfortunately at this time there isn't an option to view just your purchased apps linked to your account. In addition, The Google Play app will automatically update itself when newer versions become available. This is a silent update from the device manufacturer or carrier, which means you will not see a notification and will not be prompted to update.
I appreciate you contacting us with feedback about the Google Play app. I'll certainly take this back to the team so we can continue to make improvements in the future. Please keep in mind that at this time, for users who receive the update to Google Play, there's no way to permanently revert back to Android Market or earlier versions of Google Play.
Please don't hesitate to contact us again if you experience any other issues or have additional feedback on Google Play.
Sincerely,

before, they had an issue with none of the my apps showing, now they have an issue where to many apps are showing
I, just want to be able to view the list of all my purchased apps easily from within Google play app.
that's how older versions were, and if I wanted to see All Apps I ever installed including free ones not installed anymore I used the website...
Ash the black market looks nice. I tried the app first but I screwed that up lol tried to uninstall update to market and ended up deleting it instead. But I used the flashable zip in his thread and it worked great. I also seen on that thread you linked the other colors but it looked like those colors were for older versions? Not a big deal to me since it comes with the blue which matches my theme anyways but thanks for sharing this looks better I like.
Update
Apparently they started pushing 3.15.6 to devices yesterday

Not only does it NOT fix the issue of not being able to easily view ALL PURCHASED apps, but now I ALSO get NO INFO whatsoever about which ones have updates
I found it odd that all my in stalled apps were "up to date" started checking them all and low and behold I had five that had updates available
this is getting frustrating as hell
Everyone with these issues NEEDS to report them to google support so they can fix them ASAP
Its strange that o never got the update you guys ate talking about biy my wide did because she has that same list although I rp not have it in my market

Inverted Apps Collection (ICS & JB)

First, I did not make any of these inverted apps, this thread is solely designed to be a site collection for inverted apps. Most of these came from rujelus22 with the exception of the inverted Play Store and MMS apps. I tried to find where I got those so that I could give proper credit but have failed to find the source again. Rest assured, when I do, appropriate credit and attribution will be given.
Things to remember, if you currently have any of these installed, with the exception of Now, you will need to uninstall them FIRST in order for the inversion to take. You will also need to set the correct permissions (rw-r-r). I have tested and am currently using each of these modded apks on Slick ROM v4. The Play Store and MMS zips can be installed through recovery. You will have to push the others to their respective locations. I used ROM Toolbox Pro to move them. Finally, you may need to remove "(inverted)" from the file name.
I've also included a Matte Black wallpaper for those of you who like it dark, but not totally black! If you have copies of other inverted apk's and would like to add them to this list, feel free and let me know. If you send them to me I'll give appropriate credit and add to the OP to keep a good consolidated list for everyone.
You can visit rujelus22's website here for additional apps that I haven't included/tried: rujelus22's themes & inverted apps
Matte Black Wallpaper
This is the only one that's a little different. You need to have the hacked version of Google Now installed already. Then download this and paste it over the top of Velvet.apk in the system/apps folder. Make sure permissions are rw-r-r.
Inverted Google Now
Inverted Play Store
Inverted MMS
Inverted GMail
Inverted Play Music
Inverted Google+
Inverted ES File Explorer
Inverted YouTube
Inverted Twitter
Inverted Facebook

I pulled it from another rom, moved, fixed permissions. Didn't even have to reboot.
I'm on Slick v4, as well.

Yeah, that's where I've got it and it won't work. Wonder if it's missing some other dependency...
Edit: think I found the problem. Someone mentioned in the Slick ROM thread these came from the stock odexed ROM. I need the apk's from a deodexed version.

Did you have to delete the (inverted) from the file name in order to get it to work? If so, I need to update the OP to make folks aware of that possibility.

That's what it appears. All I know is I copied it to the folder, changed the permissions and tried to install it. It failed. I decided to delete "(inverted)" from the filename. Tried to install again, and it worked.
So as far as I know, that's what caused it. It's worth a shot haha
This is the inverted email I use.
You need to change the name to "email.apk" after moving to system/app and setting permissions.
this isn't my app, I just use it and I forgot where I downloaded it.

[App] "FolderMount" Move Game Data to Ext. SDCard - Apps2SD alternative!

I don't know if this mentioned yet, but you might be aware that you can't move apps to your ext. SD Card to free up space on your phone.
For some reasons Apps2SD doesn't seem to work on Samsung phones.
After doing a bit of browsing/research I came across an app called "FolderMount." [Requires Root]
This works by mounting folders in your ext. SDcard to your internal SD Card, fooling your device into thinking your external storage is part of your internal storage.
Here is a quote by the developer:
madmack said:
Today some apps store big files over the internal SD card (e.g. Games, Podcasts, Offline RSS feeds, Pictures, Offline navigation software). Typically users have a small internal sd card size (~16GB) while the external SD is a lot bigger (~32-64GB). Most of these apps don't have an option to use the external SD card to store data so they starve your internal SD card memory. I'm bringing this solution to fix this issue. In my case, I use this app to mount offline navigation software and some GameLoft games (NFS anyone?).
Doesn't this do the same thing as previous apps?
There are a few apps that already do this. However, my app differs in that:
a) Some of the existing apps aren't maintained anymore. FolderMount will be maintained by me as we go forward.
b) While most of the previous apps work properly in most cases, I found them not very intuitive to setup initially and were lacking some necessary "sanity checks" before linking folders. I intend to keep this app as intuitive and bug free as possible.
c) Support for Android 4.2.2! No app will currently do that for you, so here it is. (dev talk: this uses the debuggerd service trick to get it to work).

FolderMount is also available on the Play Store.
Seriously. Buy this app. Ben using it since my s3 and it works prefect.

Agree. Worth every penny. I just bought a 64gb MicroSD today, so I'm happy I'm able to make use of it lol
My money......you will take it.
I bought it from play store. I agree this is a great app. I would love to be able to do one mount. For example mount all of android folder to external instead of sub folders and when installing new apps it automatically writes to SD card. Another option would be great is to have your external SD card act as internal and swap them around.
This app is well worth the cost.

Me too. Too bad that seems like the best solution as you don't have to offload every large app and it would move new ones automatically. I wonder what the danger is?

Let's use Modern Combat 4 as an example for this:
Once you download Modern Combat, it stores all of its data on your internal SDcard in the following location:
/Android/obb/com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftM4HM
This folder is somewhere around 2GB i believe, or something like that.
The goal FolderMount is to move the above folder to your external MicroSD, but at the same time, fool your phone into thinking that the folder data is still in the internal drive.
To do this, do the following;
Download and install FolderMouint and give it root permissions.
Start the applications and click at on the "+".
For Name, Put in Modern Combat 4
For Source, chose Android -> obb -> com.gameloft.android.ANMP.GloftM4HM and press the checkmark button at the top.
You will get a message saying the following
"Would you like me to create the destination folder automatically?..blah blah blah"
Just choose yes.
Now press the Check mark button at the top again. It will start to move all the files to your external MicroSD card.
Once that has been completed, in the main FolderMount screen, you will see a little pin beside "Modern Combay 4". Press that and it will mount your folders together and it should work!
Sorry, I kind of rushed through this. Let me know if you need more help
Thank u!

Any idea if Google music can be stored on external SD?

Where is Google Music usually stored? If its in a folder on your SD Card, you should be able to use FolderMount with it, without any problems.

According to every forum I found when I googled this question, its located at "Android/data/com.google.android.music/cache/music/", however, the folder comes out empty when I find this location. So FolderMount might not help us with this. An alternative to FolderMount for Google Music is an app called Google Play Music+. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2140756
It lets you choose the folder which the music is downloaded to.

[ App ] apps to the SD Card

I downloaded the Clean Master app based off a review on XDA Portal to cleanup unused items in The Note 2. I found that this app gives you a list of apps, in File Manager , that can be moved to your SD Card . I was able to move most of my large files to my SD Card . In settings internal phone storage became larger and ext storage reduced by the same amount. I also found several Youtube videos on this app . The app is for free in App Store .I found this app to be extremely helpful and a simple way to transfer apps to your SD Card .

Hate to burst your bubble but my beautiful widgets app also has data on the sdcard. This is normal for this app. Also unless something in Android has changed, you can't put widgets on your sdcard, they will stop working.

This is just another way to directory bind. Its not really moving the app per say to the sdcard, its moving the data folder to the sdcard and then pointing the app to it in its original folder on the internal memory. But like posted above, there are many ways to do this.

Download script manager off play store.
Download the attached file to your sd (internal or external)
Open script manager find the downloaded script, select it click SU and Boot, select Run. Close Script manager, fix permissions in rom manager, reboot clear cache/dalvik enjoy.

Also this script is only compatible with TW roms you obviously are liable for any and all modifications you choose to do to your phone/OS, what works for me may not in fact work for you. GNII variants "should" have no issues with this method if instructions are followed and A TW rom is presently installed on said device. Questions are always best via pm, I do tend to be more active in the at&t/international sub forums.
