Hi
I bought a SGS2 from virgin. It was i9100M with ICS
However, I gave it to someone for unlocking and they downgraded it.
the version now is
model GT-i9100
android 2.3.3
baseband i9100XXKE4
kernel
2.6.35.7-i9100ZSKF4-CL280225
[email protected] #22
build number GINGERBREAD.ZSKF4
If I want to upgrade back to ICS
do I just follow the "Flashing Firmware with Odin" in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 ?
after flashing the firmware, what do I do with the stock kernel?
Also, if I want warranty, do I need to use the stock kernel in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928 ?
but the UGKG2 is still GB, and I can't find the LD3 (people said LD3 is on Kies but mine said no upgrade avaiable on Kies)
side note: my phone is new, would it be easier for me to try returning it to future shop and exchange for a new phone then re-unlock it with unlock code sold by others online?
sorry if i asked some common questions but i am really new to android and i have difficulty understanding most guides/terms.
thanks in advanced

Earlier in June I received a Galaxy SII that was unbranded, but I had to return it due to a little circle that seemed to be 'burned' into the screen.
Now I finally received my new Galaxy S II but to my great disappointment it's loaded with Vodafone crap, and branded:
PDA:KE5 / PHONE:KE1 / CSC:KE2 (VDF)
I want to replace the branded FW for the official non branded FW and I was wondering how to do that.. I went to this thread but i'm not quite sure which FW i'll need.. Does anyone happen to know?
Use the XEN version of XWKF3 firmware, it's for the Netherlands.
As intratech said flag stock unbranded firmware for your country
You can also try latest 2.3.4 based roms as batista 70, cognition or vilian
Search on the development section

Thanks for the quick replies, i'm downloading the Kernel and FW now, but before I get to work with that:
how do i backup the complete kernel/fw of my phone as it is right now, in case I ever have to send it in for repairs and don't want to void my warranty?
Will I be able to update future firmwares with KIES or will i have to keep doing it manually once I install the unbranded firmware?
After flashing the XWKF3 XEN firmware on my phone instructions say i need to flash the insecure kernel before i can flash the stock XWKF3 kernel. I was wondering which Chainfire version I have to get. I think it's the KF3 one from this post but I'd like to make very sure before I start doing things.
Then after flashing the Chainfire kf3 kernel I can use Odin in the same way to flash the stock KF3 kernel, correct?
Once all this is done, will KIES recognise my phone and offer me updates when they become available or will i have to keep doing it manually?
Is it possible to backup my current FW/Kernel with Odin so that I can put those back on in case I ever need to return my phone for repairs and don't want to get any trouble with warranty?
I bought a SGII off ebay and after a few hours of reading I'm totally confused about how to debrand the phone. The original owner received the phone from Vodafone Ireland and rooted it to unlock it. Below are the phone specs
Android- 2.3.3
Baseband version- I9100BUKG1
Kernel-2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE2-CL187606 root-DELL101#2
Build- GINGERBREAD.BUKG2
I just want to get rid of all the vodafone software and other bloatware. Im not interested in rooting the phone.
From my research I should go for the latest XEU firmware (Im in Malta, Europe) which is XWKF3
GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XWKF3_I9100XXKE7_I9100XEUKD1
Is this correct? It seems older than what I have.. I dont mind, like I said I just want to debrand without ending up bricking the device. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any stock rom removes branded stuff .

Thanks JJEgan, and just to confirm, the only downside to using these Franenstein builds is that I cannot use Kies to upgrade the firmware?
I just installed the firmware below as advised but I'm still seeing all the Vodafone bloatware. Everything went perfectly s described in the official thread. Did I do something wrong?
Factory reset your phone .
Phone should now be
PDA:XXKG6| Baseband : XXKG6| CSC:XEUKD1

Thanks, that worked perfectly!
Hello everybody,
I have a SGS2 from Bell Canada. I upgraded the stock firmware following various guides here. I managed to root it and to unlock it using Galaxy S unlock from the market.
The phone is running well now, battery life is about 2-3 days (I have Juice Defender and it helps).
I would like to upgrade to ICS but after reading a few threads I am very confused...
My first question is: will I lose my unlock?
Then, Kies does not recognize my phone any more; should I flash back to stock and wait for ICS to be available for my carrier and take it from there? Or should I go through Odin and just flash one of the ROMs released for Europe (or another region).
I am even willing to pay for Mobile Odin Pro and flash it directly from the phone, I read that it's safe and you don't lose any data, although other people were saying that it's better to just start from scratch.
Right now my phone info is the following:
PRODUCT CODE: GT-I9100LKMBMC
pda: I9100XWKK5
PHONE: I9100XXKI3
CSC: I9100XEUKH2
Model: GT-I9100 (shouldn't it have a M at the end?)
Android version: 2.3.6
Baseband version: I9100xxki3
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9100xwkk5-CL754841
[email protected] #2
Build number GINGERBREAD.XWKK5
So, could anyone point me to the right direction?
Thanks in advance
I think you have the international sgs2. I have tried flashing the xxlpq ics update and then flashed a custom rom but I encountered a lot of issues. I think the ics update still has lots of bugs so I rolled back to gingerbread using checkrom revoHd v6. So as of the moment all you need to do is root your phone with Odin and CF-root kernel and wait for a stable ics rom

You have a whole lot of options to play with, it all depends how comfortable you feel and what do you want.
For starters, you have upgraded from KG2 to KK5, which is a firmware other then Bell, as Bell never released and update. Because of this upgrade your phone says it’s a I9100 and not I9100M. Mine says the same after I upgraded as well.
I updated my Bell KG2 to ICS (LP7) and so far I don’t have any problems with it. I did have an issue with calls going straight to voicemail, so I installed the LPQ modem, and things have been well. People have complained about battery life, but I don't think it’s bad. I would say pretty close to stock GB if not better.
What you can do is make a Nandroid backup and then upgrade to ICS. You can do it through Odin Mobile if you like, as it won't upgrade your Custom Rom Counter, if that is an item of concern to you. There are other ways to clear the custom rom counter, if you go through ODIN.
I would suggest doing a factory reset with CWM, and clear cache/dalvik cahce. This will be like setting up a new phone. You can also upgrade without the reset that and it will keep all your settings and unlock. You will lose root though, but you can re-root.
I have done it both ways, and I went with the reset in my 2nd try just for my peace of mind. I didn’t have any problems without the reset either.
If you don’t like it, you can always go back to your Nandroid backup, which is what you currently have using CWM.
If you want original bell firmware, then you have to wait until bell releases it.
In the end you are the one to decide. Hope this helps.
Once u unlocked network it won't relock after u flash/update software

Hi everyody, thanks for the answers...
I guess I want to try the stock first and then move on to some custom roms...
I read a thread about the XEO Rom and was going to try that
What do you think about this?
@sahib - thanks, I was not aware of that...
@warhawk_la - thanks a lot, very helpful bits and pieces; what is the difference between the LP7 rom and the XEO and where did you get the files from (I see tht you flashed a different modem)

NO its un locked .

May not work as Kies needs correct codes .
Or should I go through Odin and just flash one of the ROMs released for Europe (or another region).
Your choice but rom for your region and actual phone is always best even as a backup for warranty .
Personally i would not jump on the ICS bandwagon yet .

download odin 1.85, official XXLPQ rom, siyah kernel.
flash the lpq rom first
flash the siyah kernel second
now you have last ics and root.
Hi, Im kind of new to this.
I looked in a couple forums on how to flash the Official ICS rom. but I would like to know can I just pick any official ICS firmware and flash it?
my phone is:
android version- 2.3.6
Baseband version- I9100XXKI1
I know the firmware I have now is the Chinese one but would like to flash the European one. The person I bought the phone off of seemed to have flashed the Chinese firmware 2.3.6 themselves and I couldn't use Kies to update it, not sure if the phone was originally the Chinese firmware or not.
These were the two sites I was looking at to flash it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278&page=2
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
also is there a difference between those websites for the latest ICS firmware?
any help would be appreciated. thank you!

Shouldn't matter. The reason Kies won't update it now though is probably because the original owner flashed a firmware that has a CSC that doesn't match your location/carrier. You should be able to flash any I9100 firmware you wish, as long as it is NOT an I9100G firmware.

Those two are pretty much the same, if you are looking at the same versions. (e.g. XWLP4) They are just hosted on different sites. I think the one on Intratech's thread may have the older bootloaders included instead of the newer ones (newer ones which prevent USB jigs from resetting the binary flash counter), and the one on Faryaab's thread probably has the newer bootloaders, but that should be the only difference.
And that difference probably doesn't matter much, as I believe with ICS, you can use Chainfire's "Triangle Away" app to reset the counter regardless of which bootloaders you have. (but I don't know that info for sure)
Thanks for the help, just flashed it and works great !
Hi Guys and Gals. I am a noob trying to update my Galaxy s2 to ICS and have hit a brick wall. I received the message that an update was available and downloaded it OTA, but the install failed for some reason. When i plug in to Kies i get the " Device doesn't support software upgrades via Kies" message.
After a little searching it seems the main reason for this might be a modified Kernel. The phone is an unbranded XSA model and i have never modified it in anyway. I have no idea if the dealer did any modifications before shipping.
What i need to know is, how do i tell if it has a stock kernel or not, and do i need to re flash the entire firmware to get it.
This is all the info on the phone.
Baseband version I9100XXKI4
Kernel Version [email protected]#2
PDA I9100XWKK2
Phone I9100XXKI4
CSC I9100XSAKE3
Build Info Friday Nov 11 18:05:58 KST 2011
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated and sorry the lack of knowledge.
I believe it still is the stock kernel, also XXKI4 is a stock baseband version for Gingerbread. Looks like you didn't get updated. Best thing to do is do it on this website if you want the proper ICS experience, and not all of that Touchwiz nonsense Samsung loves.
Chris.
Unless you flash custom roms or kernels it always has Stock kernel .
Use CHECKFUS to see if their is an ICS update for your phone if not you wait or flash stock ICS roms from here .

Thanks for the replies. Just wondering what the issue with Kies would be? I am a little unsure as to which ICS version to get and also, what will happen to all my data, settings etc..
Backup your data factory reset phone and trie updates again .
Fails then flash stock firmware for your location from XDA ,
jje
Get the correct official firmware version from samfirmwares.Com.
Flash using ODIN.
