unrooting how? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi xda goers .
I'm trying to unroot my s3 ready for jb?
I've flashed back stock kernel via odin .
Flashed recovery through s.gs3 toolkit 1.0 which got rid of cwm etc.
But I'm still rooted?
It's still says custom binary in recovery mode & ota update fails @ 30%.
Do I flash full pda csc etc again?
Will it wipe my phone clean?
Don't wanna wipe my phone clean.
Help pls pls pls

You need triangle away to reset the counter. Then find your original firmware and flash with odin.
Edit: Backup your data.

Check out faryab's stock firmware sticky in the general section.
In the op, there is a link to a YouTube video by totally dubbed. It shows you exactly what you need to do to return to stock.

Is better to reset the counter with triangle away. No harm right
Flash with PDA only.
Flashing original firmware shouldn't wipe your data. But backup your data for safety.

Update from 2.3 to 4.0

currently i have a 2.3.6 custom rom and would like to flash I9100XWLP9_I9100KPNLP1_KPN with odin, this is a 1-part odin flash, so i have to flash without re-partition and afterwards make a factory reset, is this the correct way to upgrade? thx

He doesn't NEED to, but it is usually better to start fresh. Reduces the chances of weird problems.
Every update I do, I back up all my app data using TB, full wipe, update, and then restore my TB backups.

The real answer is no need for factory wipe its not in the instructions .
But as posted many of us do wipe the phone before an upgrade and factory reset afterwards .
It does no harm anyway and is probably good practice .

Yes, correct. Make sure re-partition is not checked.

Help Needed

Earlier today tried flashing an original firmware on my Galaxy S2 using this file GT-I9100_XEU_I9100XWLP7_I9100XXLPS_I9100XEULP5.tar. Everything passed through Odin but seems my device doesn't want to boot flashing this. I also installed the Litening_Rom_v6-1.tar.md5 after that and again didn't want to boot through Odin.
I did manage to get into CWM and restore a nandroid backup and it boots fine now.
I am selling my S2 tomorrow and wanted to put it back to stock. Is there any way through CWM to flash a stock rom and unroot as seems odin is causing problems. If the CWM way isn't possible can anyone point me in the right direction for an original rom that will work.
Any help appreciated.
By the way i am on an unbranded S2 form Uk.
When you were flashing in Odin did you flash the kernel, recovery and the system? Or just the system?

Just flashed the file above with the pda button. (Only gave me the .tar file)
It is caused by not making a wipe cache and data before flash. Before selling, format also /system. First of all reset counter with Triangle Away if not yet

Will this mthod take me back to stock after I have done it?
Use the Odin instructions from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487
Remember to select the PDA option, not other options on Odin. That should work without needing to format system, cache and dalvik cache. If it really doesn't work report here. And try to flash other Roms, like the NEE 4.0.4 (last one released).

With those steps you have an empty phone. If you flash a stock ROM you get your phone like when you bought it

When the ROM is booting it usually stays on the Samsung logo for a few minutes as it boots/builds dalvik-cache and all that jazz.
How long did you wait?
Do you have Odin already?
You'll need to download a stock ROM to flash first of all, or if you want there is am Odin flashable version of the jellybean ROM you flashed.

Oh OK, you'll need to flash it so.
download whatever stock ROM you need from samfirmware.com or the jellybean leaked one (Odin in title) and we'll talk then. (700+mb)
You can flash whatever firmware you want from samfirmware.com (obviously for gt-i9300) but region doesn't matter, I used XXBLG8 firmware. (UK)

Chainfire didn't get rid of your recovery, stock android has a file in ota's which overwrites custom recoveries on boot, i think flashing cf-root seems to solve this problem, I still have my custom recovery after several reboots.
Chainfire3d may not be compatible with sammy jellybean just yet.

Reinstalling Entire Phone

Hi xda developers members,
I'm currently trying to reinstall my phone back to stock with just the stock files and nothing else, can anyone tell me how I would go about this? I just want the phone cleared of all apps and other files as I want a fresh start with it.
Galaxy is currently running Jellybean 4.1.1 rooted.
Thanks.
factory reset in recovery if you've not been flashing any custom roms/rooted etc...
EDIT - or just do a reset through the settings menu

Unfortunately the OS is rooted. Is that an issue?
EDIT: Thanks for the information, so if I reset the phone via Settings > Back Up or Reset > Factory Data Reset. This will wipe all the apps, files and the root off my phone and just leave me with the OS?
nope -
run triangle away first if you want to reset the counter
then flash a stock ROM firmware from sammobile.com - use ODIN to flash it.
then full wipe through recovery
should all be stock then....

I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to all this stuff so bare with me on this!
1. Why would I want to reset the counter?
2. I don't mind the device being rooted, I just want all the files and apps gone, I wouldn't mind if it was just the OS and the rooted files. Would that be done if I did the Factory Data Reset?
Thanks.
Oh right, yeah, if you still want root just do a factory reset

Cheers mate, much appreciated. I've just done as you've said and it's worked, hooray!
Now one more question if I may. At the moment, when I go and check for an update, it says "Your device has been modified. Software updates are not available"
This is a pain, as I don't want to loose my root, but I want to be able to update I guess, anyway to bypass this?
Im afraid not. You can still update through kies I think, but youll lose root.
The choice is basically root or ota updates..
Easiest thing to do is flash any new firmwares using ODIN then reroot using CF Root..
Or use custom roms..

Fair enough, suppose we can't have it all!
So when the next Jellybean update comes out, I just download the firmware from SamMobile, and flash it via ODIN. Sounds easy enough!
Thanks for all the help mate, once again it's much appreciated. Enjoy your evening.
Yep, thats correct.
Cheers, and you!

There is a function in the Samsung Kies Called "Firmware Upgrade and Initialization" which is located in the Tools of the Samsung Kies 2.5.0.
Fill in the information it requires and follow the instructions.
It will repartition your phone and install the new pure firmware just like it is a new phone.
