Headphone jack causing static - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

When using earphones (of any kind) I hear a LOT of static, but only when on the internet. I had this issue since launch, but it mostly died down after the first update, but now it is back and worse. It doesn't happen if I'm listening to downloaded music. I can adjust the level of static when turning it in its port, and when there is nothing playing I can hear static when I wiggle it around. Here is the really odd thing...when I was doing this wiggling, there was nothing playing, I pulled the jack out just slightly and pushed it back in.As soon as I pushed it back in the voice dialer pops up. It did this each and every time. Does this sound like there is something wrong in the grounding? Why does this static only happen when streaming? It is worse when I have my tpu case off. There is absolutely nothing else wrong with my phone, so I don't want to be trading it in over this. I bought it at best buy, but would sprint still service it? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Few factors involved, but definitely an interesting issue. I haven't seen any other hardware posts like this, but maybe I missed them.
Either way, I would put the software on the phone back to 100% stock ROM/kernel. If the issue still persists, which it sounds as if it will, then I would look into taking it to a Sprint store.
By restoring the device to 100% stock software, the idea is that this will eliminate any potential software issue as this shouldn't occur on a stock device. If the issue still occurs on a completely stock software device, then the issue has a higher probability of being hardware related.
As long as the issue always occurs, it should be simple for a Sprint tech to confirm the issue. Unfortunately, I have a feeling they might just swap the phone out rather than actually look into resolving the issue. Generally, my experience has been that Sprint is pretty helpful when it comes to hardware issues with a device.
Of course, their service might depend on where you purchased it as well as the type of protection plan you have on the device. Maybe somebody who works as a Sprint tech or who has been in for service recently can chime in on their experience.
Hope that helps!

I am not rooted. Stock only. It started off this way on launch day, got better after the first ota then got worse after yesterday's ota. I bought it at best buy and have their insurance and they would just swap it out. However, I would likely get a refurb and having had to go through 4 refurbs with my 3D last year, I don't really want the hassle, especially since this phone is behaving in every other way. Good to know that sprint will still service it. The store in my area serviced each of my 4 3D's before they would issue another phone, so maybe I'll get lucky.

I just swapped my S-off hboot 1.2 for this PoS "unsoffable" hboot 1.15 today due to a similiar case. I had the same issue with static and it seems that no matter what i get there seems to be some type of interference and static with some white noise when playing music. The new phone has substantially less interference but it still slightly remains there. I have used both my Shure SE535's and Westone 4R's and am having the same issue. It seems to be that cheap crappy headsets are fine playing music but when and if you want good quality IEM then your screwed with interference.

Here is the upshot. Factory reset my phone thinking it was a software issue cuz no static when listening to anything on my SD card. That didn't work. Took it into sprint and of course, it sounded perfect. He suggested it could be that my wifi is overloaded and he was right. Sounds perfect when streaming off 3G. Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Out of curiosity, are you listening to music while charging? I figure the culprit on my end its the charger being plugged in gives off a static feed to my headset which is only an inch away from the charger port. If this isn't the case, carry on.

I'm having the same issue, every four or five seconds when playing music I hear a weird static sound. This happens on Wi-Fi, charging, not charging and 3g. When I browse the internet I do hear more prominent static sound than when I'm just listening to music on sd card. I hope this issue gets resolved in a software update

Yup radios and or charging can cause some bad interference with the headphone jack, being an all metal unibody frame can screw with the shielding
I'm jumping so many threads today lol

Thanks for posting about the wifi solution.
I was listening to some mellow jazz guitar music and this static every few seconds started driving me nuts.
While using cheaper earphones and louder music, it's not that much of a problem but for nice crisp sound and high quality IEMs the static can be very annoying. I had my wifi turned on for location services inside a building. As soon as I turned it off, no more periodic static.

Is there any known solution to this static while using wifi & headphones problem?
I just got this device and this is one of the first things I noticed. I came from a HTC Rezound and the headphones had absolutely 0 static. My Nexus 10, however, had static only while plugged in to charger.
the static seems to happen whenever anything loads on wifi, which for me is a problem because I stream videos over a local wifi router [raspberry pi & hard drive with Apache2 as a local http media server]. the static is kinda bugging me, so if anybody has any idea how to fix it, please let us know!
thanks

so there's no way to eliminate it? by grounding something, or what-not?
I just wish HTC paid more attention to the headphone audio when they designed it.

I myself have never heard static unless I'm listening to music with low bit rate. Usually I play FLAC files so that's not the issue. Have experimented with how quality music?

No I haven't experimented a whole lot, but I've tried a few of my videos and all of them have static. it ranges from slight to slightly severe, as it's loading the whole video off Wifi and that's apparently what causes the static. [with wifi off, play local music, I don't recall hearing static.]
I tried getting a wire and holding one end and putting the other to the headphone ground, but no luck

Poor call quality while charging

I've noticed that when I take a call and my phone is plugged in, the call quality is horrible and it sounds like the signal is cutting out really bad. I typically have three bars at home so that shouldn't have much if anything to do with it. When I unplug the charger from the phone, the call instantly sounds like it should and will immediately start cutting out again if I reconnect the charger. Before I exchange my phone (I'm still within my 14-day return period), has anyone else noticed this?
I can tell you that mine works fine on a call while charging.
I just got off a 10 minute business call with the A/C charger plugged in and it worked just fine.
No issues here.

within 14 days, they will give you a new phone. otherwise, you would be looking at a refurb.
I took my phone in today and they swapped it out without much hassle. I explained I had done two factory resets (sort of true...one after unlocking the bootloader and then I had to reflash the RUU before I returned it) and the issue persisted. I also had an odd issue with one of my earbuds not always working. Sometimes I'd have to kind of push it into my ear and I'd hear a pop from it, then it would start working. Of course, they exchanged the whole deal for me. I haven't had time to test the call quality yet but I did notice I seem to get a better signal with this one and, on a side note, my volume buttons now have a nice sort of "click" to them where they felt kind of squishy, so to speak, on the previous phone. Minor thing but nice nonetheless.

Anyone having problems with Bluetooth range?

I've got the Motorola s9 stereo Bluetooth headphones and have used them with my EVO 3d photon and e4gt with no problems ever. Suddenly with the Evo lte its losing signal repeatedly. The headphones are on my head, the phone is in my pocket. As soon as I start walking, it starts cutting out. If I stand still its fine again. That's seriously a range of 3 feet max. Are my mesh shorts really that difficult to pass through?
Also my Wifi has cut in and out 3 times while writing this post. Wtf HTC
I have the LG headphones and they skip occasionally and my phone is on my hip in the open. I didn't have the bt headset with any other phone so I can't compare but I would expect it to connect a little better.

Sounds like basically the same thing I am experiencing. Make mowing the lawn difficult to use with them. Using the Moto S10s myself
Can successfully stream music to a sony BT base unit located anywhere from 5' to 15' away with full BT signal bars showing. Hope that helps.
Also, rooted with 1st version of Fresh, stock kernel no additional SD (yet)

More like exactly the same thing. I use mine while mowing.
What's really perplexing to me is that I can have the phone sitting somewhere and can walk away from it probably 10-15 feet and get no disconnects, but heaven forbid I have the phone in my pocket and walk at the same time.
Seems like a longshot, but I wonder if this type of issue can be fixed with a software update.
Anyone find a solution to this problem? I have the exact same issue even after Jelly Bean. Strange thing is if I leave the phone on the counter and walk away I get over 30 ft before losing signal. As soon as I put the phone in my pants pocket or in my lap sitting down the S9s cut in and out. Tried S10s with the same results. My wife also has the EVO LTE and it has the issue as well but not quite as bad. I have to put my hand on the phone to make it cut it and out.
It's definitely the EVO that has the issue. Tried an iPhone and it did not cut out at all in my pocket. Sure wish we had a solution to this. I don't remember my EVO 4G having this issue either.

Not rooted, running stock latest official update. So I just called HTC about the issue. Surprise, they just say they must not be compatible with the EVO LTE. I could have sworn they worked fine last summer when I first got the LTE. I only realized the issue after I bought the S10 after Jelly Bean. I think Jelly Bean has caused the issue. S9 does the same thing after Jelly Bean. Guess I'll have to stay with wired headphones until they fix the issue, if they fix it. Disappointing.
Anyone have the Galaxy III with these headphones? Don't want to switch but HTC keeps pushing me in that direction.
With the latest update one of the items was better bluetooth compatibility. Fail. At least with the Motorola S9 and S10 headphones. Now the cutting out is even worse. I can have the phone in my hands 1 foot from the headphones and they cut out. Before the update they did not cut out at all from that distance. Forget about putting the phone in your pocket now.

I don't use any streaming services though. I have all my music saved on my SD card and play it from there and when I stream that music over Bluetooth to my car stereo, every now & then the audio will just go out (mute) for like a second and then come back on. I thought it was my friend's car stereo (Hyundai) but I'm driving a Chevrolet now and it's doing the same thing. So, I'm sure it's the phone because it happened on my original eVo LTE and I now have a replacement device that does the same thing.
I'm having the same issue, audio cutting out for like a split second at regular intervals.
I'm running OMNI dated 20140331 and kernel from that.
On stock 4.1 it didn't seem to do this.
I saw in another thread that boosting the min cpu frequency might help, I'll try that today.
Well that didn't work.
Anybody else have any ideas?

I've seen a few times it can be caused by the back cover being loose not sure if that is your issue but it's worth a shot
Sent from my EVO using XDA Free mobile app
It wasn't loose but I see the antenna contact points. I'll try applying pressure to the back cover over the bluetooth antenna contact point (as soon as I figure out which one is the bluetooth).
But I thought the issue with the back cover was total loss in bluetooth connectivity?
I don't have any problems connecting or staying connected. Just the audio stutters/skips.
Holding the back cover slightly below the headphone jack (where the wlan/bluetooth antenna contact points are) did not seem to make a difference.
I'll probably move the contact points out a bit anyway.
The only change to stock OMNI is restricting the max cpu freq to 702.
I'll try turning that off tonight.

I've had the call fade in and out a bit. My spouse (has the same phone), noticed people complaining about fade out during calls, too. We noticed that if we held the phone normally (fingers wrapped around the phone, about the middle of the phone), the calls fade out. If you hold the phone around the bottom near the speaker -- or use a headset -- calls are okay.
As a little test, I held the phone normally and the network signal was around -114 dBM.
I put the phone on the table, the network signal was around -104 dBM.
Both our G3s exhibited this issue. We didn't purchase them together, either (one by mail, other from store). Perhaps its a phone issue, perhaps we coincidentally received bad phones.

I think there are more than just a few people with this problem. Mine is giving me the same issue. People tell me they can't hear me at all, or I sound like I am stuck in a well, or that I am ignoring them. I've tried a couple of things but to no avail. I believe it has something to do with noise cancellation. I just turned off voice enhancement and voice privacy and it still seems to give me this problem but I am gonna try it out for longer. I am with Verizon. Let me know if you guys have any ideas.
Yes I have noticed that when the phone is right to me ear im ok but a couple of inches away and people say echo or sounds like Im stuck in a wall. I mean weird? has anyone tried a factory reset
I've been struggling with this issue since I purchased the phone on the 17th. I've also noted significantly worse signal in relation to my G2. I swapped out my phone this past weekend and the problem exists with the replacement.

In vehicle bluetooth works every time. I had one case where my wife could barely hear me through the phone (we both have the g3) but all other calls have been fine thus far. Hopefully this gets addressed in the first update.
Still An Issue...
Any update on a fix for this?
I just spent a month calling VZ about how people have trouble hearing us (we have two G3s with the same problem). One was replaced and people still have trouble hearing us.
The SG3 was never this bad with calls.
I have not tried my G3 with the Prius Bluetooth, but on every call so far over Verizon or Google Voice/Hangouts the Voice quality whenever I enquired has been reported to be fine.
The only issue I have noticed is that sometimes when I hold the phone right-handed my finger underneath it covers the Mic hole.
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk
I have a bad habit of bringing the mic away from my mouth at about a 45 degree angle while keeping the phone to my ear. When I do this, I get reports of the echo / can't hear me. Bringing it back to the proper position seems to correct the issue.
I have an ad hoc solution that seems to work so far:
Use the speakerphone while on the call. Totally obnoxious in social settings, but if you're somewhere private, it works.
Turn off Bluetooth. I did this a couple of time no one complained not being able to hear me.
Speaking to Verizon is pretty much useless. One rep did a fancy dance to say this is a software issue and they can't do anything for me at this point.
Add me to the list of Verizon LG G3 owners with poor call quality. You guys have described exactly what I am experiencing. People tell me I fade out, sound tinny, sound underwater etc. I have tried the phone in a case (OtterBox) no case, different parts of my house, different positions holding it, making sure I'm not covering the mic etc.
Also did a factory reset and ran the phone in "Safe Mode" as well
Same problems. Seems to happen on longer calls BTW and I have no troubles hearing people.
I am getting a solid -104 to -108 LTE signal and solid -89dbm CDMA and -88dbm 1xRTT signal.
Right now I am going to use BT exclusively and see what happens, but this is troubling since I make a lot of calls.
I never had this problem, in the same location my house, with my last phone a Droid Razr Maxx.
It gets pretty much the same signal levels.
Any ideas on this?
Is it a Verizon problem?
I bought this phone in BestBuy so I'm not really sure how to proceed to exchange it as I am past my 30 days?
Do I call Verizon?
Go back to Best Buy?
Call LG?
I've dealt with Verizon before and like the other person said, it's not a pleasant experience .

P.S Other than the call quality issue, this phone is incredible and I love it.

I have the same problem as many on here and it's frustrating. As great as the features on the phone are, it fails at its most basic task - making calls.
I quoted you to answer part of your question. I, too, got my G3 at Best Buy - 22 days ago to be precise. I finally got fed up with the call quality problem and spoke to Best Buy yesterday (and had the issue pop up mid call with them). Unfortunately, their return policy is 15 days. Beyond that you're forced to use a protection plan claim, if you have one, or work directly with LG for a repair - which would leave you without a phone for a few weeks while LG does its thing. It was also suggested that it could indeed be a software issue and a future update could fix the issue. But that does nothing for us now.

Thanks for the info Rodeojones.
I suspect it is a software bug.
I "think" I can still take out a protection plan with Verizon so I might do that just in case it gets worse.
I'm trying the BT headset exclusively now to see if that helps or changes things. So far nobody is complaining and also when I use the BT in my car, a crappy Jabra Freeway Speaker thing, nobody seems to complain either which leads me to believe that maybe the mic is doing something odd causing the phone to reduce the audio going out or something.
It certainly is disappointing having a top tier phone that has problems making phone calls.
@stang2003
You've described all the troubleshooting steps I've gone through as well. I am disappointed beyond words. I would at least be happy if there was some affirmation from Verizon or LG that this problem exists, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it....

From what I am reading it seems this might be related to Verizon only.
Is anyone having these kinds of problems on a different carrier than Verizon?
I did find a number of threads regarding poor signal strength with the G3. Seems even the EU folks are having these problems.
Maybe both call quality/microphone problems are actually related to a poor radio signal?
Ok, so an entire day using my Blue Ant ancient T1 BT and not a single complaint about fading in and out etc. In fact I was talking to a person on BT and it was fine. I disconnected the BT, did not move the phone which was right in front of me, put it on speaker and within a couple of minutes he was claiming he couldn't hear me, fading in and out etc. I switched to regular ear (no speaker phone) and same thing with fading in and out. I went back to BT and talked for about 10 additional minutes and it was fine.
My preliminary conclusion, and it's really too early to tell, is that it's somehow related to the mic in the phone as BT doesn't seem to have the problem.
Can anyone else confirm this?
Test with BT and see if you get complaints from people on the other end that you are fading etc.

problem with the headphone socket or sound

Has anyone has problem when listening to music using the socket built into the main unit, sometimes whiles listening to music, the sounds seem to move to the left with the left side being louder, not sure if it's the socket or the some problem with the sound chip, but moving the plug of the headset is not the cause of the problem, but you need to pull the plug out and insert back in to get the sound normal.
sometimes just pluging the headphones in also cause the problem.
Yessss! I thought it was my headphones!!!
I have had the exact issue with my G5 also! Exactly as you described it, I had to unplug and replug the headset to get it to go away. I was using Skull Candy Smokin' Buds....you? I actually went out and bought the LG Tone Pro bluetooth headset instead.

I have a few IEM listed in my sig that I use, all expensive ones, so i don't think i will use a BT IEM to replace them, also cable IEM produce better sound for Hi Res sound, I have also found out that you can skip to the next few tracks/files and go back it will go back to normal, but in all case we shouldn't have to do anything to cover up the problem, I think it's a software problem, but my G5 is going back today and i'm getting a new one through a instore 14 day exchange policies.

Yeah...But this is the second one I've had that issue on! Coupled with the flaws in the glass on the Titan screens...and the silver I had freezing and not turning on...this quality control is really crap on this phone. And that sucks, because I love this phone more than any Samsung I've had!

my first had scratches on the silver line on the case, second had a white burn mark in the screen, and can be seen with all colors, this is my third one, not totally perfect, but I have the advantage of checking the unit in store for problems including dead and bright pixels, but the sound problem was only noticed a few days ago and I thought it was my IEM, but it happened a few times, I should have my B&O unit soon, but this problem should happen whether its hardware or software wise.
I just had an issue with the FM Radio - it kept saying headphones not plugged in! I pull them out plug them back in, and it was OK again! I am using my G4 headphones too so even the same make!! I hope I don't need to return it GRRRR
@jreed3786
I got a replacment phone yesterday, at first I though it ok on this unit, but the problem is there and it's on they same song file, therefore I think the DAC actually can detect this problem that may be it related to the actual file, could be a bad conversion causing the phone to perform like this.
that being said, I have a DSD file that starts to buzz when it reached the end of the song, it happens on the V10 and now the G5, and the time length on the file shows like -9206:-30, whiles played on other units it's ok.
You guys didn't push it in all the way. G5 for some reason has a lot of resistance on the port. I had same experience until I noticed the gap and decided to give it little more force. It clicks in hard and didn't have any issue after that

I know how to plug the headphone plug in, it's not that issue, it's more like a compatibility issue, I have comfirmed this myself numerous time.
Headphone jack issue and more
So I've also suffered from the issue with my headphones plugged in. My left channel is quiet and my right is loud. On one occasion the left channel crackled and completely died. Unplugging and plugging back in my headphones causes the phone software to correct itself. This happens at least every other day. Then, my phone became sluggish a couple days ago and started to freeze and suffer random restarts until last night when it froze and entered a bootloop on the startup screen. I pulled the battery and let it sit for a while and plugged it back in and it entered the OS but was sluggish. This morning I attempted to use messenger and it froze again and entered another bootloop and then died. I took it back to T-Mobile and I've only had it 18 days. They took it back under their 20 grace period and I now have my second G5. This same issue was prevalent in the G4 and LG has recognized that issue. I hope I'm not in for another letdown on this second phone. I just divorced Motorola... Where to next?

Not implying you don't know how. Just saying G5 has port that is tight. No pun intended.

that's ok, i didn't mean't for that either, but may be it stood out too much, I apologize for that, the actual issue is compatibility with the music file and the DAC, sometimes the dac can get really sensitive and pickup minor errors in the files to cause these problems, previously the few files that had the problem has been removed from the phone, no problem since.

So the audio issue I was having is the same as the other posters on this forum. One channel with a low level and the other with a normal level and then having to unplug the audio cable to reset it. However, the ultimate failure of the phone is not. I was sharing with everyone what happened to mine and perhaps I should have started a new thread with that issue alone? I haven't had my second phone for even 24 hours yest so only time will tell and I will post and findings related to the audio here. I use my headphones during the work week so that is when I will know for sure.

Hmm. Very interesting. Thanks for the info. I did see many complaints with DAC on G5.

Exact same thing happening to me, will pan most of the sound over to one side making one ear quite loud and the other quiet. I find if I pause, switch to another app, than back to whatever music app I was using it usually resolves the issue. Hoping the B&O module helps but doubtful considering this seems software related. I'll probably just deal with it this way.
I have the Same issue via aux. Restarting Poweramp mostly helps

I bought it yesterday
Headphone jack is very very loose. I tried to different earphones.whenever i touch headphone jack headphone gets disconnected. Any one with this issue
Only problem with mic enabled headphones
Same problem though my normal headphones work fine. When i use my headphones with a mic it only plays the right channel. I have not always had this problem but seems to be lasting a lot longer today. Normally fixed itself in 30 seconds but has yet to. I tried restarting phone with headphones in, then again with them unplugged. Havent found a solution. Does the B&O module work?
