cf-root by chainfire
The best & easiest way for you to root your S3 is by using SAMSUNG GALAXY S3 TOOLKIT.

If i use cf root to root my galaxy s3 i9300 will i be able to flash a custom rom? It says that the cf root was intended to be used with stock firmware in the main thread. Also how safe is it? If i follow the steps exactly as instructed what are the chances the phone will brick?
Thanks

Yes you will.
It means it is meant to be used to root a stock Rom, after that you can do what you like. Cf root is extremely safe if you follow the instructions, which are very simple. If you do that you won't brick your phone

Thanks for your quick reply. I have one more question though. Does it matter that my phone is locked and carrier branded? I always thought it had to be fully unlocked and unbranded to root and stuff. Thanks!

No, you only need to unlock if you want to use a different network, won't affect it otherwise
My question is after rooting and not changing anything else will you still be able to get the updates. I remember with the bionic I cou ld but not with the tbolt.
are you carrier branded as in US Carrier branded or something else?
If you're talking about a US Carrier branded phone, then you're in the wrong place. This is specifically for the i9300, not any other version. There are appropriate forums for your specific phone.
If you do have the i9300, then do as slaphead says. you're all set.

Oopsie daisy.... I could've sworn I read the whole thread from start to end.. Not sure how I missed that..
I think the word "carrier branded" set of red flags in my head since I was only recently reading about someone who tried to flash an i9300 rom with their sprint s3.
just wanted to make sure and not have to see another brick.

Two threads in eleven minutes from two different users asking the same, unbelievably basic question. Asking of which is clear admittance of breaking the rules (rule 1). So to ensure I'm in adherence to the rules (rule 10), I post the below to be helpful.

It's not possible. Many skillful developers are working hard to crack it, but Samsung's protection is just too hard to crack, it seems. If you somehow still find people, saying that it's possible, don't believe them, they are trying to trick you. All the existing "working" methods are just going to break your phone.
Ok, now on a serious note, it's possible, but I really wouldn't advise you to do that, regarding your... erm... "mental capabilities" in challenging situations.
being a bit helpful here
why do you want to root do you know why you are rooting ???
Please understand rooting voids your warranty .

easiest way
i rooted by using zedomax's method with zerglings.. you press like two buttons.
i have the i9100m, so not sure if it will work on "g"
he does say it will work on all varients
just search galaxys2root on google and he should be the first link
hope this helped! im a noob to the forum, but have been rooted for a month or so now

First, that's NOT zedomax's method. He regurgitated zergRush, which was the work of DoomLord and some other contributors - of which he was NOT one of. And I don't think he gave credit, either.
Second, I believe it doesn't work with newer releases of 2.3.6, which the OP is on.
Third, the OP already said he tried this method. (well, actually, he said "zerg". Pretty safe bet he meant this)

I figured you did, you asked a question in another thread I answered, where I told you explicitly to use G kernels.
However, I don't see any attempt on your part to "unbrick" your phone. Have you tried at all? Sometimes "bricked" phones are recoverable... How is it "bricked"? Does it boot? Can you get it into download mode if it can power on?

sorry, i knew that wasn't his method, i just meant he used it to root his phone. I wasnt meaning to give him ANY of the credit for it, although he does advertise it pretty well for noobs.
And i wasn't aware that it didn't work for the newer versions, i rooted not too long ago and it worked fine, but i don't think my carrier updates firmware often..

The only thing is that i want to unroot know but im not sure where to start. iv read up on this site to unroot s3 i9300 (galaxys3root) and i want to go back to stock firmware. I want everything gone also the root(supersu, cwm manager also the aptoide and stuff like that. Basically so the warranty is intact again.
the method shown is it good and is it compatible with the way i have rooted? Galaxys3root
since my phone is branded to 3 network in uk can i install unbranded firmware so the 3 start up sign goes away or shall i stick to same firmware.
Appreciate the help the people give on here. Thanx alot

Really you should follow an xda guide, no point in linking to another site....if you have a query about their method you should address them, I can guarantee their method is copy/paste or rewrite of an xda post anyway.

Hi there,
You might want to check out samsung galaxy III toolkit here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488.
It is a fairly easy to understand command tool which will root your phone and also install custom recovery (which is essential IMO if you want to try different ROMs later on).
my question is simple how to know if my bootloader is locked or not ? i need it to be unlocked so i can root it using this :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957273&highlight=root+samsung+galaxy+s3&page=55
i have another question is cwm recovery working for 4.1.2 jb devices and where to get it? if not what's the alternative?

Bootloader is irrelevant, it's a separate operating system that plays no part in recovery or rom.

actually the verizon sgs3 does have a locked bootloader. so it is not always the manufacturer that makes the decisions. in the us the carriers have much more input especially in regards to updates. att just recently began updates to 4.12.
have a look at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1756338 they are all samsung galaxy s 3 but none are identical . some are exynos , some are snapdragon. ram , video boards, radios all different variants. that is why it is important to know your device
All the US versions are the same hardware... Besides Radio related stuff...
